My sister and I decided to try Marlowe out because we wanted a more elevated experience as a birthday treat, but I've had pedicures that were half the price and so much more elevated. I didn't understand all of the positive reviews until I read a little further and saw that they bribe clients by offering a free manicure for a 5 star review. I didn't book the appointments so didn't receive this offer, but my experience was so underwhelming, I would have felt guilty saying otherwise - like I was tricking people into being disappointed for my own gain. First of all, there were no massage chairs!? And accessibility to the (not very comfortable) pedicure chairs is only for the able-bodied, as it requires a large step up/down on sleek flooring with no handrail. There are tons of basic polishes to choose from, but we were rushed choosing our shades, and the selection was lacking in anything more interesting, such as multi-chromes, shimmers, or holographic shades. The website promises medical-grade sterlization, so I thought they must use an autoclave. However the tools were just loose in the tray, not sealed in autoclave pouches. I thought I could see a UV cabinet (it could've just been a towel warmer, they look alike from a distance) in the back through the open door, but there wasn't any evidence of sanitization on our specific trays of tools, much less medical-grade. My sister booked us the Big Sur pedicures, which are supposed to last 55 minutes, include soak, shaping, cuticle care, moisturizing, and polish, PLUS sugar scrub, hot towels and a 10 minute massage. I didn't even realize she had booked the upgraded service until afterwards - when I was already annoyed by all of the basic missed steps, with no clue as to how much of the promised service was actually being skipped or skimped on. My technician didn't introduce herself or speak to me for the entire 25 minutes of my service, which was incredibly awkward. Did you catch that my 55 minute, $85 (plus tip) pedicure was under a half hour? Were the other 30 minutes promised in the service meant to be drying time? There was no callous or cuticle clean-up, sugar scrub, or hot towels. My nails are all different lengths and cut at weird angles, polish applied sloppily on my cuticles and skin, and my polish had a huge smear on it that I was unable to get fixed because my technician just grunted and walked away when she was "finished" (and before I could look at my nails), never to be seen again. My sister spent an extra $22 for callous removal, and her technician told her she didn't know what she was doing and had never done it before!? She just put some lotion on her feet, wrapped them in plastic for a few minutes, and that seemed to be the whole upgraded experience. Neither one of us received anything you would classify as an actual foot or leg massage, let alone the 10 minutes we paid extra for - my technician lightly ran her hands on my feet and legs for about a minute each while STARING at the clock on the wall behind her. It was less of a massage than what is normally included with even the cheapest pedicure at any local hole-in-the-wall spot. No one told us how long we should wait for our nails to dry (there were no dryers), and no one ever returned to check on us or help us on with our shoes - something that is pretty basic etiquette at even the cheapest salon. My main disappointment is that my sister is incredibly busy and giving - always putting everyone else first - and never has/takes time to pamper herself and relax, and she was really excited for this service. It's upsetting that she didn't get the little bit of pampering she was looking forward to, on the rare occasion that she allowed herself the opportunity. Attractive, modern salon with Marin pricing (quite high!) Marlowe promises an attention to detail not found at other nail salons. But do they deliver? My first experience was mixed, averaging 3.5 stars but generally positive. I got a basic pedicure, "The Marlowe". Pedicures are $60 and up. (They have $110 pedicures, which include special treatments.) Manicures start at $45, and go up from there. I noted pluses, and minuses. The team was friendly & greeted me at the door and the booking & checkout process went smoothly. I did wait ten minutes for a technician to get started. I liked their selection of quality lacquer: Essie, OPI and Deborah Littmann. I didn't see any magazines, & wasn't offered water, things I really appreciate with a spa pedicure. Both the manicure and pedicure rooms are aesthetically beautiful, modern, & clean. The decor is perfection. There are accessibility issues, such as having to balance & climb two stairs without a railing, to get to the pedicure chairs. The chairs are comfortable, but are not massage chairs. They were meticulous with pedicure prep & clean up, taking their time. While nail prep was exacting, attention to detail with polish application was a little less so. The tech left polish on my skin, around several toes. I noticed this & asked that they please clean up & since my original tech was now with another client, they sent a different person to help. She was through. Still, given their attention to detail, that's something you'd hope the team would catch at the time of service, not leave to the client to resolve. After service I received an email offering a gift, a $47 gratis manicure for any 5 star review, with a link to their Yelp listing. I picked this business based on all the 5 star reviews, so mixed feelings after seeing this message on the reliability of the reviews. I decided to try another manicurist at Marlowe and was shocked by the attitude and lack of service. My nails were cut far too short -- down to the skin, which was painful. They use toe clippers for hands!!! There was a total disconnect during the appointment; when I tried to engage, the therapist (Zoey) felt dismissive and uninterested. The application of polish was careless, and overall it was the most uncomfortable salon interaction I've ever had. Extremely unprofessional and disappointing. After showing the photos - employee was rude and disrespectful. Blamed me, the victim! I hope unkind businesses like this do not remain as part of our loving community. This is by far the cutest nail shop I've been in! Very "Marin". The vibes are so nice and welcoming, everyone has a smile on their face. I will say this nail shop is a tad bit different from my usual nail shop experiences but not in a bad way. It's very cutesy and there are no chemical smells lingering in the air. I will admit the prices are (in my opinion) ridiculously high but what isn't these days right? If you're looking for vibes, ambiance, and don't mind paying this is the place for you. I ran into some unexpected traffic on my way to my appointment, but they were so accommodating and were able to push my slot back by 30 minutes. Marlowe is located in the Marin Country Mart and there's plenty of free parking outside. The inside is so cute. It's clean, stylish, and very comfortable. They have a great selection of polishes. This new salon in Larkspur Landing is incredible. Beautifully decorated and comfortable. I love that they have "clean" signs on all of the stations that are open- the focus is on cleanliness here, and it shows. They have all of the best polish options in so many great colors. I've been here many times and can't justify it anymore. The experience is too variable for the premium pricing. I received a Marlowe mani and pedi today. The manicurist was very kind, but clearly inexperienced. I had to coach her through three rounds of filing my nails as they were crooked and uneven. We finally got there by me holding my hands uncomfortably upright while she filed so that she could see the shape. She also asked whether I wanted my cuticles cut, or if I wanted lotion, which I understood to be standard (if not basic) components of the service. For $45, I expect to be able to trust the expertise of the tech and relax, not spend the whole time worried about how it's going. My pedicure was good until the end, when the technician painted a considerable portion of the skin of my toe to "even out" the appearance of my nail, instead of cutting the nail shorter as I had requested. Never had that happen before! I had to ask in earnest for her to remove the polish and straighten out the nail, as she initially pushed back claiming it was my nail, not my skin. Hmm. I could write the pedicure experience off as an errant one-off, but the manicures I've received here have been so hit-or-miss. This one was an objectively subpar experience. What's more, when I shared my experience with the front desk team, they apologized and asked if I was satisfied with the final product, which missed the point. They suggested I only book with certain technicians going forward (the implication being those are their good ones). No real attempt to remedy the experience. Bummer, because the location is so convenient and the facility is cute and clean. read more

Hands down one of the worst manicures I've ever had--and at nearly $100, that's outrageous. The polish was full of bubbles, smeared across my cuticles, and painted unevenly like it was done blindfolded. Beyond sloppy. On top of that, I was billed for a gel removal my client never even received. When I emailed about both the botched manicure and the overcharge, they completely ignored the billing issue and only offered a redo. Months later, when I finally scheduled it (because constant gel removal destroys nails), they suddenly downgraded it to a regular manicure. This is appalling, dishonest, and shows zero respect for customers. If you value your money, your time, & quality, steer clear. This place isn't at all worth the premium pricing. I went here for the first time today. The manicurist was late by 15 minutes for my gel manicure. She then rushed to scratch off my previous gel polish, causing me to bleed in the middle of my nail. (which by the way is priced at an extra $15 and is supposed to be a 20 minute service) She then blamed the bleeding on my nails being too thin. Then after filing all my old gel polish off, she started the manicure without ever wiping off all the dusty old gel. My new polish was applied and of course it was lumpy with old gel dust. There was even a hair (not my hair, different color) on one of my nails, which of course I pointed out to the manicurist. She said she didn't want to redo it because of "how thin my nails were" so she painted the hair into my nail with two more coats of paint! Then again, without ever wiping off the remaining gel dust, she added lotion to my hands and arms and rubbed it in. My nails are lumpy and I'm disturbed about having someone else's hair buried in my nail polish. Yuck.....I cannot believe this place markets itself for being clean and careful. I loooove coming to Marin Country Mart for my regular manis/pedis with Alina at Marlowe. It's a perfect location, and the nail salon is beautiful. Parking is always easy. And it's fun to grab a bite and shop at the Country Mart and/or Farmer's Market beforehand or afterwards. The vibe of Marlowe is fantastic. Perfect music. Beautiful furnishings and decor.
