A wonderful and surprising roadside spot in Pico Rivera -- fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Plenty of patio seating, friendly and attentive service, and phenomenally good food. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny: the beautifully prepared servings are huge, and beach city diners will be accustomed to paying more for much less. The delicately fried fish chicharones are a great shared appetizer, or a full meal in themselves. In three visits, I've ordered several different shrimp dishes and sushi rolls, and every one has been a winner. Printed menu is mostly in Spanish -- but with lots of photos, on-line bilingual menu and the helpful staff, my English-speaking parties had no trouble getting all the delicious food we could eat. Mariscos Choix is a great choice for fresh and tasty seafood in Downey. Every time we go here my girlfriend and I order a couple of tacos de marlin along with any of their tostadas. The micheladas are big enough to share with another person, but when they're this good why would you share it?! I highly recommend the oyster shooters as well. Mariscos Choix never fails. We've been coming for years and the service and food have remained consistent. This time we had the best server - Itzel! She was really friendly, attentive and helpful. We definitely will look to sit in her area again. They are currently still in construction and look forward to when it's finished for additional seating. We prefer to sit outside, with some ceviche and aguachiles, tacos de pulpo zarandeado, micheladas or cubetas de Modelo and the live music playing. Check it out if you haven't yet. The molcajete only came with four pieces of steak, two small pieces of chicken, and half of a burnt tomato, and it lacked flavor overall. The molcajete was $55. Very good food, very clean, micheladas are very good as well. Came here on a Sunday morning you already know lol (la cruda) and came here on a Saturday night I believe 2 weeks later. Both days the service was great and they kept the drinks coming. Food was delicious, surprising only cause these places are somewhat iffy but here definitely no worries both times I came it was pretty consistent food-wise. Super disappointed by this place. I have had this place on my bookmark list for awhile as it is a local spot and it is always so crowded. We came in on a Tuesday night and the place was packed so I thought it must be the place for bomb mariscos. So we looked the menu over a few times and when our server came to the table to take our order I asked a few questions and she provided her recommendations. We ended up ordering the tacos gobernador (individually priced at $3 a pop), aguachile, tostada mixta, and the campechana. The best thing was the tostada and that was it. The tostada was loaded with tons of shrimp, octopus, and crab meat. This was the only really edible thing that night. The tacos were small, barely filled, and bland. Definitely not overflowing as in the picture on the menu. I could not recall one shrimp in the one and half I ate. The campechana was the worst of all. The taste was indescribable, both my friend and I were trying to figure it but unsuccessful. I felt bad because I said I would share but I could not eat it. The aguachile was ok, the shrimp were limp and chewy. We tried to revive it with some extra limon and chile. To top it off the prices were definitely higher than other spots and for the quality of food I think it was overpriced. I don't know if they had a bad night or were not expecting the crowd of people but boy oh boy I would not recommend this place at all. It seems like people are here for the micheladas which may make them believe that the food is good. Sorry I will not be coming back. read more
