A solid restaurant find in the heart of the gothic quarter. You don't have to go down to the beach to get some good paella. This restaurant is located in Placa Reial, so grab a seat outside if you can. The waiters were able/willing to speak in English with us which we appreciated! The restaurant has bottled water you can pay for, but won't serve tap. We started with the truffle balsamic asparagus and this was a delicious yet light start before our paella. The paella normally comes in servings of two but the kitchen was willing to work with us since I have a seafood allergy. The vegetable paella hit the spot! It was seasoned amazingly. Lovely location especially to eat al fresco in the evening under heat lamps. The food was delicious, especially the pulpo Valencia, which was cooked perfectly; that is a must. The pan y tomatoes seem to be a staple at most restaurants and after trying it here I understand why; it has a burst of flavor. The papas are fried perfectly with hot sauce and the salad was fresh. Take a pass on this one. On the plus side, the space is beautiful. Perfect location, great design. But it is down hill from there. Service was tough. We had two servers, one was really frustrated we existed. Walked by us a dozen times while we waited over 10 mins to order drinks, and as soon as one person ordered a drink, he walked away. The other server was great, but not around as much. Most of all the food was disaapointing. The octopus tasted microwaved, with cheap smoked paprika on top. From my perspective the best at placa real. We had arroz negro, gazpacho and lenguado (sole, Seezunge) the fish was perfectly cooked. Service was great but not spectacular. I understand that Americans love the "my name is ..." style - but great for Europeans without knowing the waitresses name. The food was outstanding. Interior looks elegant and warm. This place looked like one of the better ones so we sat down in this corner with no sunlight as the place is busy and ordered. Service-wise, the place was no good. But food-wise, I was more than satisfied. Even though this place is a seafood restaurant, they claim to serve Tapas, because if you order off of the tapas menu, the portions are smaller, which is better suited for us tourists because we wanted to try everything. The tapas are really cheap actually. We ordered: - Jamon Bellota 5.90: your typical spanish cured ham - very good! - patatos bravas 3.50: roasted potato chunks with spicy dressing - great!! - chipiron 3.50: deep fried baby squid - a little too greasy for my liking. - gambas plancha 4.50: grilled prawns with shell on - fantastically dressed! - almejas 3.50: steamed/grilled clams - sooo fresh and awesome with lemon!! - crema marisco 3.90: seafood soup - small portion, no actual seafood. This is probably my least favorite restaurant in all of Barcelona the location is great the patio area is great. As it looks right out into the Great Main Square. However the food is only mediocre at the best. I saw paella come out in this deep dishes with a cover on it and as of a scooped-out it was runny caldo style. I do love the crusty bottom paella.. many places... many styles.. This is just how they serve it here. Instead I ordered myself three of their fine oysters along with some smoked octopus. Octopus was prepared unusual as it was not whole but served sliced and in quarter-size pieces. Some of the pieces were firm and chewable other pieces were soft and gummy. I'll have to pass on this and so should you. Very inconsistent. The next were oysters...which the piece de resistance. Giant Briny oysters probably from the Mediterranean or somewhere nearby. Definitely yummy and I could probably eat at least a dozen of these. Just with a little bit of lemon there are huge hit however they do over charge for these at about 6 Euro for three of them. Yes English is well spoken here and they do understand everything. Service is okay, and they do sell bottled water not just serve tap water. read more

We really enjoyed our meal here. We first went to the Tarantos Flamenco show and walked across the plaza to MariscCo. The atmosphere drew our attention, as both the outdoor and indoor seating looked very nice. When you first walk in, they have a figurine of Dalí riding a rhinoceros in the middle of the restaurant. And throughout the restaurant they have art and tributes to Dalí. The dinner was very good, particularly the seafood dishes. I had the Grilled octopus and he flavor was fantastic and cooked perfectly. I only wish it was a larger dish (very small portion). My wife ordered the garlic prawns. Also delicious (also small for an entree). We also had some other fine dishes (sea bass was very good, calamari was OK, we only wish it had some sauces to accompany it.). My friend and I had pretty high hopes for MariscCo, after all everywhere else we've eaten at was at worst mediocre. I am compelled to give MariscCo only 1 star, but I want to be fair. It could have been worse, much worse. The decor and the atmosphere of the restaurant itself was quite nice. The outside seating area was almost completely full. There was a nice array of big, fresh caught seafood at the counter. The service was also pretty good and the food came extremely quickly - probably about 5-8 minutes after ordering. Food (from bad to worse): Mussels - pretty good, but nothing memorable. Potatoes - just OK, needed more mayo and more time in the cooker. Garlic Shrimp - good, overcooked slightly, but nice sauce. Grilled King Prawns - not really king prawns, quite small, overcooked. Grilled Sea Bass - well cooked, but WAS NOT SCALED?! Maybe it's a thing that I'm not aware of, but it rendered 50% of the fish inedible. What was worse was that all the scales got all over the rest of my food. I spent most of my time at that restaurant spitting out scales. AWFUL. The fish was also not properly de-boned. Never again. The only thing that could have been this experience worse was if we had gotten food poisoning - thankfully, that did not happen, but I was seriously expecting it. read more

I had no idea Plaça Reial existed..I stumbled upon it when I was wandering around Las Ramblas. Every restaurant on the square had people pushing menus and trying to get you to sit down and eat. There was a huge line for Les Quinze Nits so I decided to come here instead. After the hosts practically begged me to sit, I didn't see a waiter for 15 minutes. At least five times, they would look at me, then look sheepishly away, but not send anyone over. Finally someone came over, I asked for water, and they came back in another 10 minutes. I said that I was in Barcelona for one more night so I wanted to try paella. They told me they wouldn't serve it to me since I wasn't ordering for two. I got up and left. Solid experience. read more

Good thing I didn't read reviews here first because I'm glad we went and after a week in Spain enjoyed one of our best meals. Went kind of early 830. Smell of cooked seafood was everywhere and people had these big pots of seafood on their tables. We were intrigued and decided not to wait in line for Quince Nix. Plenty of seating and our waitress was very nice. Fresh oysters were intimidating because normally we don't like the giant ones but they were sweet and tender. Arroz negra was wonderful. Perfectly cooked rice and seafood and wasn't overly salty like so much of the food we've tried so far. Had wonderful live music outside and acrobatic performance to watch while dining outside. Food was great and the Sangria was very good - but not near as good as many I've had in Barcelona ( go to Hotel 1898 roof top bar for THE BEST Sangria you'll ever have). Absolutely. Divine. I would recommend this place to anyone I knew was coming to Barcelona. The service is prompt, polite, and friendly ( even with stuttering Spanish). And much more than that the food is fantastic, well-made, generous portions and cheap prices. Let me put it this way: my fiancé and i went out on night to place that was so bad we felt obliged to go to MariscCo to get the arroz negro in order to wipe the former paella's taste from our mouths. my daughter and I decided to try this restaurant. bad mistake. I asked for a "kids menu" the lady pointed to something on the menu- ONE item. I asked if i can get a child size pasta, plane, simple pasta with nothing on it. I was told the only plane pasta is the gluten free (? seriously). I ordered it, asking for a child size. Shorty after I got the pasta, the "ONE item" from the kids menu and my oysters. When I mentioned I didn't order the item from the kids menu, all I wanted was to see the menu and order pasta from it if they have it on it. I said that I am sorry, she must have miss understand me. The waitress looked and me and replied, "no, WE miss understood each other" Even though at the end, I wasn't charged for the kids item or the pasta ( gluten free, overcooked and not touched by my kid) the oysters suddenly didn't taste good either. :-( will not come back for sure, food not good, service not too friendly. read more
