I get the feeling that this is the local version of an old school diner. We came at an odd hour for lunch (noon) according to local habits, so we did not have to wait at all. I'm visiting Barcelona for a few months with my fiancé and this is definitely one of favorite spots for lunch. The food is sublime and the two different servers have been very kind. The prices are reasonable too, one of my favorites is the Bocadillo Jamon Iberico at 4.95 €. It is a fantastic price for the size of the sandwich and the flavor is just the perfect amount of spicy. A long line almost out the door awaited us. The bigger problem is that they didn't seem to have any system in place to figure out the places in the queue. We nearly gave up as the staff refused any eye contact. Finally though they seated us after about 20 minutes or so when a big group left and vacated multiple tables at once. We wasted no time in indicating that we wanted the Pica Tapa menu for 17.20€. This came with 9 different tapas. They were not amazing to be perfectly honest. The two most laughable were tomato paste on toasted baguette and the fried spicy green peppers. Gayle and I stopped in on the power (and directions) of a Rick Steves' Tour Book Restaurant Elisabets is a happy little neighbourhood eatery and well worth the effort to get past the La Rambla scene (including a barker or 2 beckoning us to come hither to their restaurant). I also enjoyed the collection of old radios and the comfortable local vibe that was spread out among a front bar and at least 2 different dining rooms. We had the 3-Course (including dessert) Menu del Dia, but had to guess a bit as very little English is spoken or written here. Cash Only too. As we poured over the Spanish menu, Gayle encouraged me to be "adventurist". I pointed and ended up with a large and tasty bowl of Lentil soup and some killer baked ribs. "Cosmopolitan" Gayle chose and eggs/sausage dish for the first course and the equivalent of chicken strips and fries for the main dish. This was our very first stop in Barcelona and what a hearty lunch meal it was. It's tucked in a beautiful little alleyway and isn't too spacious inside. This was one of our very first stops upon arriving in Barcelona. It was a bit chaotic as they were busy but when in Spain... (you know the rest). The service was friendly, and my fiance and I absolutely loved the "Menu Pica-Tapa," their Friday-night prix fixe menu. It requires a minimum party of 2, costs 15.80 euros (at the time of this review), and the price includes literally an enormous bar feast with pitcher of sangria included. Our table was literally packed to the brim with plates of food. It's a sampler menu of 10 different, fairly common tapas dishes. The portions were huge and much more than a bite per person. I really enjoyed the meat skewers (brochetita de carne), the shrimp (gambas a la plancha), and the charcuterie plate (plato de embutidos). The sangria was also delicious. I am torn because food is so good but service is so bad. I am a foodie so I will deal with bad service to get the great food. Just be prepared for the bad service and come with patience and a good attitude because the food is worth it. Came to this place years ago based on a Rick Steve's recommendation and to this day I still remember the lasagna I had there so on our recent trip to Spain I had to come back again in hopes of having it. To my utter sadness lasagna was not an option on their daily lunch menu which has about 5 appetizers, 5 entrees, and 5 desserts to pick from. If it is a choice on your menu please order it! Menu changes daily and if it is not on menu they won't make it for you. You get all three courses and a drink for $12 euros. This place does not cater to tourist so be prepared to try to understand the menu and get the rude waitress to help fill in the gaps. We speak Spanish and that did not even help much as there are many Catalan words that we had no idea what they meant. Waitress begrudgingly and curtly answered our questions and we ordered. I had the salad (rare to find in Barcelona that lives off carbs and fried food) and it was fresh and delicious with small mozzarella balls in it. Next I had the 4 cheese ravioli which was made with top quality ingredients and excellent. We ordered for the table croquetas, cold cuts and cheese and all were great. Dessert is not made in house and was the only sub par part of meal. This is a simple, casual, local Barcelona eatery. It is not an OMG best food you have ever had experience but the simple food they do offer is made well with fresh ingredients. Adjust your expectations and you will not be disappointed. read more

I dream about this place and their choricitos! This was my husband and mines second trip to Barcelona and one of the reason we're here again was to taste this place all over again. The servers here are more than gracious to help you out with the menu if you need any suggestions (I'm a Spanish speaker so not sure how good their English is!) Just a little away from La Rambla, it is worth steering away from the chaotic tourist trap and into the the Raval neighborhood. If you're unsure what to order here are among my favorite on the Tapas menu: Choricitos - Spicy sausage links with bread! Patatas Bravas -Fired patatos with spicy red sauce and mayo! Patatas Bolonesa- I have no idea what the sauce is but try it anyway. Chistorras-Spicy sausage links on a bauguette. Calamares - Didn't personally try but saw a lot of locals get this! I was too full at this point to try! The very best part of this place are the ridiculous prices! How is this place rated so highly? I thought this restaurant was pretty mediocre. We came on a busy night and waited a bit to be seated and then waited a loooong time to order. We tried many items including the calamari, the bomba, the patatas bravas, and croquettes. I will say, their bomba was good, very large and flavorful. The rest of the food was not so good. Particularly, the calamari was terrible.... not crispy, no color to it, chewy.... not good calamari at all. The food here left a weird oily taste in my mouth. Came here for the set menu del dia and it offered some of the best bites I had during my trip here. The menu is entirely in Catalan, so there was a bit of educated guessing with our order - my gf even asked for recommendations from our server and all we got was "It's all good." Turns out, she was right. My first course ended up being a plate of Peas and Bits of Ham. I was pretty disappointed because it wasn't what I was expecting, but once I took a bite all my reservations dissapated - it's probably the best peas I've ever had in my life. And the bits of ham are the perfect compliment, adding a just hint of saltiness. Next, came Chorizo with Fries. The chorizo was so juicy and succulent - excellent. The fries were just okay unfortunately, but needed a sauce to accompany it (they didn't come with bravas sauce or allioli). I got a Chocolate Mousse for dessert, which is exactly what it sounds like, but my gf got Mel i Mato, a ricotta-like cheese dish with honey slathered on top. Utterly simple, absolutely delicious. This place is fabulous for the menu del dia (multi course meal for a set price) if you want to absolutely stuff your face. I've had some fabulous lasagna, half a chicken, etc and its such a great value. It is really local (no English menu, need someone to translate if you can't read it) and cozy (some may say crowded). You won't find a single other American. The only drawback is that BOTH times I've been there they have completely forgotten to serve me. I think we spent an hour before eating once, and they walk past so fast you have no chance to hale them down, which is really frustrating. I would forgive once, but twice is a bit much. read more

Everything I was looking for in a Spanish bar. Tons of locals, lots of Spanish tapas done in a regional style -- the boquerones (anchovies) in vinegar was certainly new--and downright cheap. In addition to the anchovies, we had the mix plate of Iberian hams, the mushrooms in garlic and oil, patatas bravas, and a bocadillo of lomo (pork), Roquefort, and Pyrenee sauce (tomato and olive oil). We were looking for a place close to our hotel to have lunch when we found this restaurant. Not a fancy place but clean and it felt good. First they didn't seem to want tourist, it is a place where locals eat . They asked if we had reservations and we said no , of course could not understand why they needed reseservations because it had a lot of empty seats but they found a place for us and we are very glad they did. After a little while we understood why they asked about the reservations is because single ladies and men , couples and larger group of locals were coming in right after us. They had a fixed menu for lunch on Saturday , priced very inexpensive compare to the other restaurants we had visited in the area. First plate we had a garbanzo soup It was delicious , second plate we had I think is called Codillo de cerdo (ham hock or pork knuckle) which I had never had they way they prepared it , also amazing and for dessert I had flan and my husband had a apple pie (the entire meal seem to be homemade) , the meal was served with bread , wine or beer . I had the house wine which was very good and my husband had a very nice Spanish beer. The lady who served us was very efficient , proffessional and when my husband said he wanted to see the menu for tapas she told him , you are getting too much food I dont think you can eat all of that unless you are very hungry. We laughed she saunded like a grandmother more than a server. Our last night in Barcelona and we stumbled upon this very unassuming restaurant, with no english menu option ( instantly thought it was a great sign of authenticity). We tried only a few of their tapas and were very impressed - super tasty and fresh. The restaurant was founded in 1965 so they definitely know what they are doing. I used to live a two minute walk from elisabets, and now that I've left Barcelona, I've started to get food dreams about this place. It's a little disorganized to get seated and it doesn't really try to cater to tourists, but you've gotta step out of your comfort zone!! If you're willing to try your best to speak to them Spanish, they're happy to help you out. I love the bravas, pincho de tortilla, pimientos del padrón, pan amb tomate, croquetas... I could go on forever. They really nail the basics here, and if you go to elisabets enough, they'll start to remember you!!! Unless you're a tourist and want to try out the sangria, I don't think it's a necessity here. Same goes with the jamón and manchego, but I was never a huge fan of jamon anyway.
