a plate of enchiladas on a table
Joshua H.

Everyone save your time and money and don't go. My wife was born in Mexico, and my family is from Spain. This place is exactly what happens when white people open a Mexican restaurant. Not authentic at all. Prices are crazy for cheap food. $16 for three sad tiny rolled enchiladas with no sides of rice or beans. Service is cold and rude. Seating is horrible. Can't wait till this place fails. It won't take long

Shrimp Taco (shrimp was not cooked)

The ambiance of Mariposa is lovely. The decor, booths, chairs, utensils, water glasses...lovely. So much charm! Chips and salsa are okay. The large corn tortilla chips are a little cumbersome to share with the table. (Had to snap chips in half or quarters to dip in salsa -- not every guest at the table is cool with double-dipping and/or pawing chips to make them a more suitable size for dipping in salsa..) A glaring issue is perhaps the pacing of the meal. The wait from ordering to being served was ~40 minutes. Poor timing could explain why tacos (Carne Asada & Taco Al Pastor) were served lukewarm/room temp. The most disheartening experience -- we were served raw/undercooked shrimp tacos. Oo Mariposa is a new restaurant and hopefully timing and good food safety practices can be addressed for future patrons. I cannot recommend Mariposa at this time.

Been here three times now and loved it each time! The food was tasty and filling (I had leftovers every time), and the servers were friendly. Definitely a favorite for my husband and me.

Went for my birthday on ribbon cutting day we were a larger party of 12 the booth in the back was perfect . This could be one of our new family favs beautiful atmosphere, delicious hand crafted drinks and Mexican food with a bit of a fusion twist. The service was great friendly staff very attentive.

This is a new restaurant that we stumbled upon while walking through downtown Newark. We were intrigued and decided to go inside for lunch, and it was such a good decision. The food is AMAZING, the atmosphere is modern and cozy, and the staff was quick, friendly, and attentive. It's also moderately priced, and you get good value for your money. My friend got the enchiladas-- you can pick flavors, he had a mix (I can't remember which ones), but every flavor was good. They also served refried beans with the meal, and they were delicious but they have a kick-- they're the first spicy refried beans I've ever had, and I definitely would recommend trying them. I got 3 different tacos (they sell them individually for approximately $4 each, depending on the flavor). I think I got carnitas, chorizo, and al pastor and they were each absolutely delicious. They balance the flavors really well, and the spice level is always perfect so that it has a kick but doesn't overwhelm you. I was full after having the 3 tacos. Also, I have to say something about the chips and salsa they give you when you sit down: I've never had chips like that before. They were giant and puffier and crispier than most chips I've had, and the salsa was spicy and savory. Unfortunately I was so excited that I ate all the food before I thought to take a picture but you should definitely check it out for yourself!

Overpriced for the portions. Queso had a funky taste and salsa was bland. Decor is a mish-mash of styles, doesn't really blend.

Despite other reviews on this place, the staff were actually all friendly and attentive. When I walked in I could tell that this place is no more than a bar with dine-in seating surrounding it. I didn't really find the Birria tacos on their menu however when I inquired about them the waiter stated that they have them. I didn't have to wait long for my food however from the moment my plate arrived it was sheer disappointment. My plate arrived with 3 "Birria" tacos but there was not much about these that said "Birria". They were prepared on flour tortillas that were completely soft with no sign of the classic melted cheese on the tortilla, no limes, and no dipping broth. Of course I asked for limes and broth. The "broth" that was brought to my table appeared to be watered down taco grease and tasted as such! The tacos had a fair amount of meat, onions, and cilantro in the tortilla but these were a far cry from an authentic Birria taco. When I received my check I would discover a charge of $16.08 for a plate of Americanized tacos. Meat was dry and quite tasteless. If you're looking for a place that does not serve authentic Mexican food with higher than a giraffe's nuts pricing then this is your spot!!! I will not be a repeat customer.

This is one of our favorite places for the cozy family feel and great food, making it a great place to take the family when the kids are in town. The fajitas and flautas are two of our favorite dishes there. The vegetables in the fajitas are fresh , the flautist are crisp and never soggy or reheated, and the food is served hot and always flavorful. Very highly recommend. Good selection of beers and drinks, too.

Sometimes a little slow and can find yourself waiting for water at times. Ambiance/Atmosphere: the inside is very nice and although narrow doesn't feel crowded or stuffy. Lighting is dimly lit enough for a nice date night, but not at all to dark. Food: The pocho burrito was amazing the first time I had it, followed by the second and third time even. Just a delicious burrito with an amazing habanero cream sauce and packed full of all three meats. I'd genuinely argue from my memory that it was the best burrito I'd ever had. That being said, I'd highly recommend skipping to go. The last 2 times I had it which has been over a year because I simple could not return it was just that disgusting. I was disheartened to have wasted my weekly cheat meals on it not once, but twice in arrow of dining here. The shrimp was hard, bland as if nothing was in my mouth, but still disgustingly fishy. The habanero sauce was tasteless and the avacado most definitely was not fresh. The chicken, steak, and peppers along with the tortilla still tasted good, but it was almost impossible to enjoy it pushing past the disgusting shrimp. The enchiladas were ok, but definitely a waste of money and calories. Not at all special. It seems that now this place is doing a bit better and has back to back 4 and even 5 star reviews. I'm giving Pocho's a 3 regardless of how awful my last two experiences were due to the fact the Pocho burrito was truly that delicious the first few times I had it. I raved about it and went back 3 weeks in arrow and even told my friends about it who loved it all the same. I used to even get two dining in and all three times getting it to go. Maybe it was my fault for trusting to go orders to much, but the first time it was just as amazing as dining in. I may give it another try as I truly do miss that delicious burrito, but I've discovered much better Mexican and don't want to risk wasting my time. Only time will tell if I give this place another shot.
