We are not impressed. Hadn't been to this resteraunt in quite a few years and decided to have dinner this Saturday. 3 soapapillas, one order of nachos and 3 drinks was $75.00 with the tip. Not ridiculos but not cheap. However, the food was not impressive at all. The beef, bean and cheese soapapilla was gross, dough and soggy. The entire resteraunt smells of sewer gas, likely from aged vent pipe issues and when I asked for one extra sour cream for an XL soapapilla the waitress told me that costs extra then promptly turned and walked away. Been coming here for 25 years - today we arrived 45 minutes before closing and felt like we were putting them out. The tables we all cleared of salt - pepper - salsa - sweeteners just a bunch of blank tables. What a nice little surprise and it's been a hot minute since I have had Mexican. My mom, who lives in Kentucky, told me about this restaurant she had eaten at years ago and that had the absolutely best Sopapillas. They way she described them and her excitement told me it was a must try. After piecing it together and some google searching she confirmed it was La Paloma's. I decided it would be a perfect Saturday adventure and that my partner and I could do a late lunch. Not sure if this is the exact location but I went to this location in Health, Ohio. It is about a 45 minute drive from downtown Columbus. There is another location in Mount Vernon and a few that had closed. So off we went on our Sopapillas search. First trip out to Heath, but the restaurant was easy to find. It sits back off SR-79 (Hebron Rd), and there is plenty of parking. Outside is a neat looking building, I am going to guess late 60's/70's design. We parked and went in and were warmly greeted and placed an order. A large spacious dining area with tables and booths for seating options. We paid, seated ourselves, and when the meal was ready brought it out to us. I went with the beef and cheese Sopapillas and that crust is amazing! The beef seasoning was perfect and had just the right amount of cheese. I went with the large and it was perfect. The hostess said most folks go with this size but they offer several options. I had lettuce, diced tomatoes and a side of sour cream with mine. Chris H. had the Chicken Burrito con Queso. He loved it and of course I had to have a bite as well. It was good and had a slight kick to it. We both used the table sauce on both of ours and it was more mild than hot. Food was good, and it didn't dissapoint. I think I enjoyed talking to my Mom and sharing the adventure and that I was able to try their Sopapillas the most. Came in for the first time in 20 years and brought my husband, who has never been here. He got the seafood and cheese sopapilla, sour cream and queso. He said it was bland, very bland. My beef and cheese sopapilla with sour cream and queso had virtually no flavor and when I got a bottle of their salsa (which I remember as amazing) I was further disappointed with it. The sweet tea was good, though. I remember the food being so much better. I gave a 3 star more for nostalgia, than the food. Service was good and the food came out quick. Maybe that's the benefit to nothing being seasoned. Takes less time to prepare. read more

I just love this place. It's been around since 1975, I have been going there for as long as I can remember. The food is basic, but very good, my favorite is the chicken and cheese sopapilla, and don't pass up on the blackberry dessert sopapilla with ice cream. I love the food! My family's favorite is the Chicken and Cheese Sopapilla. My only dislike is when you walk in you order your food, pay, then you sit down and your food is brought out to you. I liked it better when they would come to your table once you were seated and asked for your order. The restaurant is not a huge place so the line frequently has a line out the door during busy times. But this does not keep me from going here at all. They also have a convenient pick up window if you wanted take out! If you haven't tried this place it is a must! read more

I placed a pickup order over the phone. Got home and the order was wrong. My daughter took a few bites before she realized it was different than what she usually gets. I took a bite and it was definitely wrong. I called the next day and also went in person and spoke to a manager. They will not issue a refund or remake the order unless I take the original item that has been eaten off of back in to the restaurant. Since it's food, I already disposed of it. read more

March 22: ordered bean n cheese Sopapia. The cheese was definitely not cheddar. Stringy, unmelted without flavor and. Inedible. Couldn't eat it. Waitress took our chips n cheese without asking if finished. Appears a cheap imitation cheese is replacing cheddar. Won't eat here anymore as economy is more important than customer satisfaction. Wow. I'm confused. Truly surprised that there were costumers in here that appear to be regulars. And more confused by the positive reviews here on yelp. Allow me to elaborate why these things surprise me: This place is weird. Get ready to Nickel and Dimed! "Would you like sour cream with that?" $1! Want chips and dip? $1.75! Want more chips after $0.75 more! Don't even bother asking for queso dip for the chips (it's not on the menu, and it really should stay that way) - it was dreadful. Powdery and....like....more like gravy? Bleh. I've eaten a LOT of Mexican food in my day - even lived in Arizona for a couple years and had some amazing food - but trust me when I say this isn't even something Americans who have never had authentic Mexican should enjoy. Also, and this is a big one, THEY DON'T HAVE FAJITAS!!!!! Yes you heard me correctly~ NO FAJITAS!! The waitress (who was kind and understanding, to her credit) tried to explain all these weird things by saying it was more of an "American Mexican" restaurant...but nah...even American mex has Fajitas. This is just terribly confusing to me. Finally, we tried the Sopapillas which the claim to be famous for - and I will admit that the deep fried dough was yummy. But the insides...eh. Just not for me. It tasted like they popped open a can of shredded chick and dumped it in with 2 ounces of cheddar cheese. Nothing to phone home about. One of my absolute favorite spots for Mexican-American food and #1 for sopapillas in the Central Ohio area. Quality of this place has been the same since I started eating here when I was a kid, 25 years ago. The beef, bean and cheese sopapillas are absolutely delectable and I saw another review claim "they complete me" - to which I would not go quite that far, but I can understand the admiration. LaPaloma is the long hidden gem of licking county. It's been a local favorite for many years, but I'm always surprised how many people still don't know about it. This restaurant offers homemade sopapillas at a big prices. Apparently many people think of sopapillas as a dessert food only... this is not the case at LaPaloma. They come strutted with meat, cheese, onions, beans if your choice. My person favorite is chicken, cheese, and onion. The chicken is so moist. Each cones topped with fresh lettuce and tomatoes, or get it plain like I do. Don't skip the salsa. It doesn't look like much, but it's amazing. There is a bottle of it on every table. It goes perfect with the nachos (order the nachos!!) Don't skip the dessert sopapillas either. My heavens swears the buckeye flavored one is to die for. Thought we would try this place while out in heath today. Walked in and was surprised at the venue and atmosphere. Ordered beef tacos with a side of rice. And chips and salsa since it's not complimentary. The cheese was melted to the tortilla and not sprinkled on top. They had been sitting and the other side of the shell was soggy. Salsa was very spicy and was in a plastic container. My side of rice, did not look like rice. My friend ordered what they are well known for and was not pleased either as it was just tortilla and cheese. Waitress was slow and inattentive. Told her when we sat down that the checks were separate. She brought the bill out in one. Asked her to split it twice again and only charged my friend for the whole bill. Weird vibe just walking into this place. Wife and I felt like somebody was watching us the whole time. This turns out to be accurate. Servers stand behind tinted glass and watch over the dining room. No complimentary chips and salsa ? Went ahead and paid for this because we always want chips and salsa. Chips were lacking in flavor and the salsa comes in a generic ketchup bottle. No hot sauce on any tables. Salsa could have really used it. Menu was like home-made looking fast Mexican food. If you are wanting a fancier chicken, steak, or shrimp dish, it's just not there.
