First time visitor to this location. We lived in Shadyside for 6 months and I went to the one off Walnut Street regularly. I didn't try the food, just had a beer and two shots (I met some guys there and we spun the wheel twice). The two guys I met did order food and they have eaten there many times. This location is a bit smaller than the Mario's off Walnut in Shadyside. It was a Friday night but early so there were not any specials, nor was it busy. I plan to return again. read more

I had a really disappointing experience. The wait was incredibly long, and it took over 40 minutes and three follow-ups just to get my Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. Unfortunately, the service was unresponsive, and when the food finally arrived, the quality was very poor. I was in town for the LA Kings/Penguins game. It was a Sunday matinee puck drop. Our rental was on the South Side and Mario's is one of the places we scouted before getting to town. They have Penguins jerseys all over the walls. I was wearing my Kings Jersey. The bartender was super nice. She recommended that we stop at Shales next to the arena before the game. That was a great recommendation. After the game, and another stop at Shale's, we went back to Marios for Dinner. They have great pizza for a bar. We got pepperoni and banana pepper. A few friends and I were in Pittsburgh for a concert downtown and we heard rumors from other concert goers about a fun spot in this area. When we arrived to find it was closed, we walked a bit up the street and found Mario's on the corner. The music was loud and there were a good bit of people there so we decided to grab a drink. The space itself gives off a rather old school sports bar/dive bar top vibe but you could tell they mix things up. There was karaoke happening in one room, and the main bar was poppin' and had friendly and attentive staff working. We stayed for a few drinks before heading back towards our hotel. We made some friends while we were there too. I could totally see why people head here late in the middle of the week. I doubt I'll ever be back but it was a fun discovery. read more

The four star rating is based primarily on the food I have had here. Mario's definitely has some issues, from it being freezing or a sweat box inside, to it having an odd smell. The bartenders are not the most friendly either. However, I have had some great times in this bar and it is a staple of Carson Street. It is a fun place to watch a game or just to get some drinks with friends. Make sure to spin the wheel. Now to the food. I have never had anything at Mario's that I did not think was very good. For appetizers I would highly recommend the buffalo chicken dip. It is hot, creamy, and has a delicious flavor. It comes with flatbread pieces which are crispy but soft on the inside and go perfect with the dip. They used to have a spicy crab dip which was one of the best dips I have ever had. Wish they would bring it back. For my main dish I have ordered a burger the last couple of times. Years ago I remember they had very subpar burgers. They weren't fresh and had a generic taste. However they have made some changes and now have some delicious burgers. The burger I ordered last time was more cooked to medium than my preferred medium rare, but this did not make that big of a difference because the burger was juicy and had a great flavor. The meat tastes like it is ground fresh daily which makes a huge difference. The bun they chose was also a perfect choice and held up everything well. Finally, their fries were fresh cut style and very good. They also have some of the best ranch dressing around...perfect with the fries. read more

Oh Mario's what can I say? At night on the weekends this place can be a nightmare but yet I will end up there somehow. On the other hand on week nights and for happy hour I love Mario's. Mario's has one of my favorite happy hours in Southside. There $5 menu is fantastic a great deal! All the food I've tried from Mario's is very good and I'm recommend for a quick bite with friends over cheap drinks! It's no gourmet dining but really good for bar food! Mario's sells food? Now see, this is what happens when you make the same bar your last stop of the night every time you go out. You miss important tidbits of information. I've never had a bad experience at Mario's, but then again, I've also never come in without a Pens jersey on. People are really, really nice to you in Pittsburgh when you're wearing Sidney Crosby on your back. Mario always has great drink specials. Everyday is beer related except Tuesday, so if you're trying to turn up then always remember: beer before liquor, never been sicker! Liquor before beer, you're in the clear! $2 wells means Mario cannot be your last stop on a Tuesday. I've realized that the hard way. This is a two story bar, but if the Southside is not hoppin' (which is rare), the second floor will either be closed off or so damn boring there's no point in going upstairs. There's usually a good mixture of young professionals and UPitt seniors in the lower floor, so if you're a mingler you can stay near the main bar and make new friends. Mario's isn't for everyone. It's just one of those bars that will rub a lot of people the wrong way; they're unapologetically Pittsburgh and they thrive on being a Southside icon. Mario's South Side Saloon is a very busy location catering to the hip young crowd. It is exceedingly crowded Thursday-Saturday evenings and exceptionally crowded on hockey nights, especially if the Pens are at home. If you want a more laid back feel ‍ with quieter surroundings, go for lunch during the week. The food is standard pub grub. I love their nachos. Salads are served Pittsburgh style: with fries on top. Be aware so if you're not familiar with this style you can ask to have your salad without. The drinks are served in creative vessels. The most popular by far is beer by the yard or half yard. Beer if your choice comes in a long glass tube with a bulb at the bottom. It's really about 4 beers in one. You will certainly draw a crowd watching you as you indulge. The trickiest part is getting the last bit of beer out without spilling it all over you. I'm a big proponent if the slow pour and twist as you end, though I'm way more comfortable with the much shorter half yard. Go to Mario's and enjoy a piece of South Side. Been here for drinks and for dinner. It is a Pittsburgh classic so if you're going out for drinks on a Friday or Saturday night, odds are everyone else is going out here as well. Not my scene but could be fun if you're into big crowds like that! As for dinner, it's much more chill. We went in on a Friday and it was self seating, at least we assumed - there was no sign telling us to do so. All that was open was a (very small) high top. Me and my two parents sat easily but our table got pretty crowded when all of our food came out. All the food was on a $5 happy hour menu (which is the main reason we went). Last night I went to Mario's before a concert and I was very surprised to learn that they had a food menu. I thought to myself, wow they actually sell food here? So that was a big surprise as I have only been here in the past on Friday and Saturday nights when it's packed. That being said, the food was actually pretty good. It was during happy hour so they had $5 appetizers and a pretty good list of them. They had classics like nachos and fries, things you certainly can't go wrong with. We ended up ordering the buffalo chicken dip which we got with pita bread and chips. It was delicious in my opinion and I was pleased. There was also a whole other menu and from a quick glance over it had typical bar food items like burgers, salads, and pizzas. As for the drinks, they had $2 well drinks which is a great deal. The shots were $5 which wasn't bad either. We got quite a few of them and they were pretty hefty so definitely worth it! I didn't order beer but the selection didn't look too shabby. There weren't any craft beers that I could see but they had the classics like Bud Light and what not. The service itself was a little slow but that was because they only seemed to have one waitress working in the area we were in. I saw her running around all over the place and I thought she did a pretty good job for what she was dealing with. I give her props. But in the future, they definitely should have more than one server, especially during happy hour and when a concert is across the street. read more

Mario's is very much so a college bar at night. However, yesterday I went there for my first time for the happy hour special. While I am used to wall-to-wall people and fighting at the bar for a drink, I was pleasantly surprised at how much nicer it is when there aren't 600 21 year olds crammed in the building. Their food was well priced for happy hour, with a $5 food menu (we ordered the buffalo chicken dip) and a regular bar-food menu. Well drinks were $2 and shost were $5 making this a very affordable happy hour. Their beer selection isn't bad, but I am a craft beer drinker and that was definitely lacking in that department. However, since the well drinks were so cheaply priced, I didn't mind ordering rum and cokes instead. The only downside is the service was much slower. It was still busy since it was happy hour, and I believe there was only one server covering the entire dining room. She was obviously busy so it isn't her fault at all.. but maybe put a few more on during the week? She was super good as a server, but we watched her fly around to different tables and she looked incredibly busy. Yes I am a fan of Mario's! Last year I was quite the regular. I knew all the bartenders and would come for every Pens game or football game. One main reason I would frequent so often was because it was my hangout where everyone knows your name and I wanted to catch the Hockey players when they were out. OK I was a little star struck but it wears off! This bar was voted best college bar and sports bar of 2010 so I think that says a lot. Last year I was in party mode and if you are into that scene here is where the meat market takes place. Jocks and those chasing jocks from neighboring colleges pretty much live here. It is a busy bar almost any night of the week so if you want to be immersed in a crowd and you have someone visiting from out of town bring them here instead of some dead dive bar. I believe that Mario Lemieux owns this bar so it is decorated in player Jerseys and sports memorabilia. The space is big so you will always have a view of the game no matter where you are. TVs are all over. I prefer to sit at the bar but if you want to do that, get there a little earlier, very early if you are planning for playoffs. They have tots! I love tater tots and they've got em' yumm. They also have many more apps and bar food. I don't consider it to be fine dining it's comfort food that tastes good with beers. Goblet night, $2 beers during game time, trivia, random goof off night, tasty shooters(blue sweet tarts)...those are the things that make Mario's shine. Mario's is a great place to go on a Saturday night! It's a huge area with many different bar areas along with seating. They also have weekly event nights such as trivia and karaoke. It's definitely a bar in which many young people come to (esp. during university semesters!) I never thought of Mario's as a place to enjoy a good meal, and wow did I miss out! The food at mario's is well priced, served quickly, and delicious!! They give huge serving sizes, and everything tastes great! Mario's provides a great deal during happy hours and throughout the week with both beer and food. I definitely recommend this bar for both a night out and the dinner beforehand! read more

My sister's friend's apartment is literally around the corner from this place somewhere on Carson street. To describe Carson street in a nutshell . . . . it is the Williamsburg of Pittsburgh. Maybe the more rowdy and care-free artsy form of Williamsburg with a few more grown-ups thrown in between. Anyway, the menu of craft and regular beers here was excellent. They even had Bell's Oberon! Which does not sell no matter how hard you try to search for it in New York. I know this, because the distributor hates New York and refuses to sell here. Oh, Michigan. I love you. Anyway, they had additional fancy things like Atwater stout, East End IPA, First Amendment, Framboise on tap, Leinenkugel, a couple Penn ales I'm unfamiliar with. But you know what? I had 3 pints of fancy beers. Guess how much it came out to? Only $10! I thought it was a mistake it was so cheap. They also had Blue Moon as a special of the day on tap for $2. I'm simply amazed. Anyway, the rest of our group also ordered a bunch of chicken wings which looked pretty good and came in a large variety of sauces and spices. The bar is pretty relaxed and divey. Both an upstairs and downstairs. Definitely a Pirates/Penguins fan bar. Don't forget to check out the bathroom. The doors are wide open and oddly the men's and women's you can easily peer into on when coming down the stairs. BUT they have chalk board walls in each stall! How exciting! See inserted pictures! This place some dumb rules on food. I understand they stop serving at 10pm, but why is it a problem to bring a slice of pizza or a gyro in from across the street after 10pm? I just recently discovered Mario's South Side Saloon, and it's quickly become my favorite post-work hangout. The staff is nice, the service fast, and the atmosphere during the early evening is enjoyable. If you're looking for a place to have decently priced drinks, watch a game (or any sport really, there are always multiple events happening), and chill for a bit, this is the place! As you'd expect, the crowd does get much younger and boozier when the sun goes down--but I haven't had a bad experience here (or at the East Side location either for that matter!) read more

So last night myself and my husband and some friends of ours who came into town for the game were looking for somewhere to eat and ended up at Mario's on carson st...we walked through the door and were looking for a place to sit and order food...we were immediately approached by a guy standing just inside the door who I took to be the manager...he asked us if we were looking for somewhere to eat to which we replied yes we were... he then proceeded to tell us that there were some other options further on down the street that we should try...he clearly was not happy that we had chosen to eat at this establishment...after all his alternative suggestions he said we could stay if we wanted as the kitchen was open and shrugged his shoulder...all this while one of his buddies was laughing behind him...needless to say we left....now Mario's advertises itself as a place for the neighborhood...sports fans and students...but what I think they mean is if you are under 30 and are going to drink all night you're welcome but if you're older and are going to take up space...then forget it ! Ageism at its best !!! Such a shame as Mario's once was truly for the neighborhood. read more

It also could have been the Philly in me not being able to relax in a bar that has large stained glass windows dedicated to Pittsburgh Sports (I felt like I was behind enemy lines). I visited Pittsburgh a few weeks ago for the Indianapolis vs. Steelers game...the game rocked. This bar, did not. I am a pretty easy to please girl. Give me drinks, give me bar food, give me fun. This bar barely accomplished the drink part! There was a large group of heavy drinkers with me. Most of us were drinking normal, easy drinks including vodka tonics and Miller Lite. Our server greeted us but then was long and lost only reappearing every 20 minutes or so, took FOREVER to take our order and eventually pissed us off so bad, we tipped her $2.00 on an over $200 bill. As close as we were sitting to the door, we could have escaped without paying and gotten away with it and my drunky friends really wanted to. Having been a server in the past, I did my best to tally up the bill and we left just enough to cover before bolting out the door. Not only did she not bring us drinks quickly, she didn't bring the right mixed drinks the majority of the time. Even after REASSURING her we would be a good table, leave a hefty tip and be big spenders, she avoided us like the plague. Was it busy ...YES, but DO YOUR JOB. Avoid your small, stingy tables who aren't ordering food or drinks and wait on the ones with gusto who have promised you big rewards for adequate service...or don't and get left with a $2.00 slap in the face. Our food took over an hour to come out....we ordered sliders, mozzerella balls and BLT sandwiches. I'm not sure what the hold up was with the dinner portion but needless to say, with empty drinks, my little crowd of 10 was getting pissy. It is too bad, too b/c the food didn't suck but one could not PAY me to return to this little hell hole on Carson Street. There are way too many other fun options and the service ALONE killed this place for me. Miss Waitress knows who she is...and even though her excuses of being very busy and having tables in all areas were supposed to make us feel sorry for her, after awhile all she sounded like was the teacher from Peanuts...wah wah wah wah, STFU and DO YOUR JOB...I hope your boss reads this and does something about it, b/c I'm fairly sure that it is just a lack of interest in your work that made our experience SUCK so bad.
