I had not been to this bakery in years but I was in North Syracuse and decided to stop in. One of my favorite pastries is the lobster tail and they had them! I was overjoyed they are big and enough for 2 people. My friend & I got to talking with Mario about the bakery business. He has a long history of baking starting with Williams on sweetheart corners. I had never been to Mario's Bakery but tried it today since my friend wanted one of their Lobster Tails. She told me how good they were. I bought a box of cookies for the family with donuts and two 1/2 moon cookies for the grandkids. Everyone said the donuts and cookies were fresh and tasted wonderful. My fiancee ordered a cookie cake (one of my faves) from this establishment. She ordered it with plain cream cheese frosting for my 40th birthday (milestone). Cookie part was amazing...what wasn't amazing was the cream cheese frosting which heavily tasted like lemon. We had to scrape it off to eat it because it tasted awful with cookie, and we didn't order lemon cream cheese frosting. Big disappointment. I've been here at least 4 times, and all I can bring myself to order is the Danishes. They have other pastries, the whole Italian cookie line up, all sorts of things that are probably delicious. I also hear they're great at cakes. But if I come here, it's to see what kind and how many Danishes they have, and I order as many as I can get away with. If you know me, you know I have a pretty serious collector's mentality I tend to have when it comes to trying food. There is so much amazing food I've only had once because it feels like such a waste not to try something new instead. So keep in mind that these Danishes are the exception to the rule, or perhaps the cure to the condition. I did come across an all white coconut flaked half-moon and had to have it. It was huge, and thick, and I thought I was getting away with something having only the white frosting. Turns out though you kind of need that duality, and by the end it was just a lot of sweet. They do have coffee available as well, but it's out of a Keurig and the whole thing seems like an afterthought, or perhaps it was initially set up for the employees. The machine's in the corner, and the cups and mix-ins weren't in plain sight. Anyway though, the freaking Danishes. I so rarely go to North Syracuse or I'd probably be a regular here. When I'm in the area, I feel like I have to come in if they're open. They never have a ton of any specific item in stock, so it's really a game of showing up and seeing what's available. A few times they only had one left, or just one flavor available. We got lucky on the day I brought my girlfriend, and we had to cut ourselves off at four. These pastries are the softest, richest, most well made Danishes I've ever had or dreamt of. When I move out of state, this will be one of the places I try to make it to while I'm visiting home. I'm sure there's a whole world of stuff here to try. All I can really tell you is that if you're looking for an amazing Danish, stop what you're doing and come here before they're gone. Mario and his team are all great. I went in not knowing exactly what I wanted for my wedding and he helped me decide. He wasn't out to just take my money; he actually talked me down from ordering a bigger cake. The size he recommended was perfect. He was very easy to talk to and never got impatient with me even though I know I was probably a pain to work with because I couldn't make up my mind. He used all the product I gave him for decorating the cake and cupcakes and they came out looking beautiful and tasting amazing. Mario himself came to the venue to do the dessert setup and it looked amazing. Both times I went in to have a meeting with him I left with pastries; it smells so good in his bakery I couldn't leave without purchasing something! I have gone here many times in the past, was good cakes. I went there for my birthday cake, they had many cakes but no chocolate and only one with whipped frosting. I cannot eat much of the sweet buttercream. We did get a cake and it was about 3/4 frosting 1/4 cake. It cost us 25 bucks and was a disappointment. All the cakes looked to be heavy on the frosting. Not the best Italian bakery that I've been to but nothing in the Syracuse area is really great. I will say that the cannoli may be one of the best that I've had. The old fashioned almond paste cookies are excellent too. The other items-sugar/butter cookies, pustie, donuts and chocolate cake with buttercream on top then covered in chocolate-all are definitely not worth the calories! They were all very dry. The old fashioned cookies are good enough that I will stop there for a few when driving by. So I don't want to say it is all bad, but it is just a few select items that I care for. We had a very special occasion and wanted a tiramisu cake to serve about 10 people. I thought Mario's sold them , so I went to Mario's and asked for a sample. The sample cost $8.00 but it was indeed wonderful, so I did not hesitate to order the $40.00 cake. Upon picking up the cake, I saw that the top of the cake was frosted like a birthday cake and no cocoa powder, (which is part of the tiramisu) and my message written on it, although I clearly asked for my congratulatory message to be written on the cardboard because of the cocoa powder. The clerk arranged for it to be repaired - I had to return an hour or so later . I asked to be compensated for my time/ gas and I was given a cookie, LOL.. However, when we sliced the cake, I was disappointed to see that it was not actually anything like the sample I had bought- it was a yellow layer cake (3 layers) with very thin layers of some dry filling that wasn't at all rich and creamy like the sample. I am so disappointed in the service and the quality, especially since I bought the sample, approved of it, and received something different. I emailed the store and received no response, so based on the no cocoa powder, the different cake and the no response, what am I left to think? I think I need to find a different bakery. read more

Mario's Italian Bakery. It must be a great place to get some cannoli. I just wanted a small sample of some of their more notable baked goods and I went in to Mario's with the intent to buy one cannoli. I would also save it for after dinner. So, I purchased two cannoli, one vanilla the other chocolate which were packaged nicely in a traditional style bakery box. I walked at least 25 feet to my car and opened the box to inspect the goods. Looks good! Take a picture, close it up and get back to my hotel. Once at the hotel, I knew the box was open and I just wanted one more peak. OK, maybe the peak turned into a bite and you can guess how long those "after dinner" cannolis lasted. First thing that was noticeable was that the cannoli shells were not crisp when I bit into them. Instead, I would state that they were soft, not soggy but did not meet my expectation of a freshly filled cannoli. The vanilla ricotta filling was rather non-descript. The chocolate cannoli shell also was soft but the filling was of a pudding like texture. It was quite surprising and really disappointing. I hate to base my entire review on two cannolis but, one only has one chance to make a good first impression. And that holds true for Italian bakeries. read more

No stars wasn't an option. They use box cake mix, not from scratch. They use there bare hands to put and smooth icing onto the cinnamon rolls, and same goes for the danishes they drizzle it on with there fingers. I called talked to the owner who admitted to the danishes but wouldn't fess up to the cinnamon rolls, he was rude and abrupt not interested in talking at all. Not using gloves has to be a health code violation! And I know this all to be true because I've known a couple people who've worked here. read more

The other reviewer gave the laundry list so I'll save that rundown. My favorites aside from half moons are any of the filled pastries with Italian names my auto correct keeps writing as "pasta huts". Yeah it Rhymes but not even close. Thanks iPad. Now that I'm not the walking hormone driven megabod that I was and I'm toting a few tots I don't stop as often but always make a trip for any special occasion. Luckily my clothes fit again despite these detours, and the nice family behind the counter even seems to still recognize me even with my smaller appetite. Make the stop, pick out a goodie and judge for yourself. I ordered a cake 4 days in advance. They lost the order so I waited while they made a " Rum Cake ". It literally was just sponge cake with a little rum flavor sprinkled on it. The cannoli filling was so thin you could barely see it. I get home and they had put the wrong name on the cake after I was asked specifically what I wanted written. Never again ! The only thing worse than the baked goods was the owner's attitude and unprofessionalism. We purchased two dozen pastries and donuts to try. All of them were inedible and wreaked of grease or lard of some type. We really wanted to let the owner know, as a service to him, so he could check if there was maybe a problem that day with his fryer or something. We went into the store the next morning and spoke with the counter clerk very quietly, checking to make sure there were no other customers there. We told him of the problem and he was apologetic and the owner came out after hearing, and asked what was wrong. We tried to tell him quietly that something was very wrong with the taste of all the products. He yelled "Give them their money back, you obviously came to the wrong place!" and mumbled as he cowled away "Ridiculous!". We stood there for a moment, not understanding what just happened or why, and the counter clerk apologized again and wished us a good day. I have never been treated like this, and he is obviously one fry short of a happy meal. Suggestions? Don't ever try to help the owner improve upon his products, or better yet, don't go there at all! This place has changed, or maybe the owner has gotten tired of running a good bakery and decided that mediocre was now acceptable. The half moon cookies were small stale cakes with cake frosting. As a born and raised New Yorker I know what a half moon should be, and this isn't it. And the owner couldn't be more rude if he tried. I have been a regular at Mario's Bakery for years. Yesterday I bought a 1/2 lb. of the rum balls. I had purchased them before and they were delicious. The ones I purchased yesterday were so hard and stale and old that they should not have been sold! I could hardly bite into them and thought I would break a tooth! They were dry dry dry. Discarded! I guess they leave their cookies in the case until they are sold. I was very disappointed as I paid almost $7 for a 1/2 pound. Last time was here, I haven't been back since... bought premade garlic cheese bread. Pulled it out to heat up when got home, covered in mold. Needless to say. Never again. This is very long 'review' but well worth your time to read before spending (or wasting) your hard-earned money. As saying goes, caveat emptor...Let the buyer beware! Another Yelper made comment... 'Make the stop, pick out a goodie and judge for yourself.' Well, I did and it was a big disappointment to say the least. Let me explain... * Last year I purchased sheet cake (with photo on it) for my parents' 65th anniversary since recommended by Borio's Restaurant. They did good job and cake with buttercream frosting (& photo) was good...it's hard to screw up basic sheet cake. Baked on that experience last year, I bought on this trip (from CA, but I grew up in this area) the following: sheet cake for birthday party, half-moon cookies, Biscotti and misc. cookies actually made onsite. * First the good before the bad news...cookies were okay but do agree with another Yelper's comments that the chocolate-covered cake balls along with a few other items were very dry and almost inedible...don't waste your money. Before * Biscotti - Way too soft and did not seem like they were 'twice-baked'. I bought a few of the plain and of chocolate dipped. When I told Mario in person (when I returned there for money back) that all were not 'crispy' and were too soft, he derogatorily said 'you gotta be kidding'. I love biscotti and have had it coast-to-coast and in Europe...this was some of the worst I have ever had. Not only soft (I could squish it between my thumb and fore finger) but also had a little too much almond flavoring. Just in case you're wondering, here's what internet states what biscotti should be...Definition per Wiki (The biscuits are oblong-shaped almond biscuits, made dry and crunchy through cutting the loaf of dough while still hot and fresh from baking in the oven.) and second definition per Merriam-Webster (A crisp cookie or biscuit of Italian origin that is flavored usually with anise and filberts or almonds). Crisp and crunchy included in above definitions and many others on various cooking websites, usually accomplished by baking them twice. Not complicated but apparently they can't or won't take the time to make them right. Don't mean to be "picky" but I work my ass off for my limited funds and only want what I paid for and the way it should be as done all over the world. * Half-moon COOKIES - I emphasize cookies since the dough used to make a good half-moon should really be more like a cookie than a cake but it was essentially cake. Plus they used a disgustingly thick layer of buttercream frosting on it...same frosting used on their cakes. I did side by side comparison since I happen to had part of sheet cake I had purchased for birthday on same day. Don't waste your money on these either. I've never had a half moon cookie stick to my fingers (underside was tacky like the muffin top that is damp) then fall apart in my hand after I take a few bites since the cake is not as strong as an cookie should be. Cookie is essentially a "squished cupcake" as I told Mario in person when I returned there for money back. Get a half-moon cookie from Geddes Bakery right down the street (across from NS Baptist Church) and compare to the 'squished cupcake' served up at Mario's. * At that point he proceeded to refund my money (or at least most of it) then told me he's been cooking for 42 years and knows how to make a half-moon cookie. Don't worry there Mario, I won't EVER set foot in there again and strongly suggest no one else does either. There are lots of other bakeries in the world (and in CNY area...you just need to keep searching) so to Mario and his bakery I say good riddance. * Given the fact I initially started our conversation by telling him I thought his cakes were very good, I am a bit surprised his reaction to a fairly new customer was so hard..."don't ever come back here again" was exactly what he said! * I was more than willing to continue buying cakes and selected cookies (that were half-way decent) going forward, but I guess his business must be large enough (or his ego even bigger!) that he did want ANY of my business...very bizarre and I think uncalled-for, but I will let YOU be the judge. As stated earlier, watch how you spend your hard-earned money and just 2 words more for you all in parting ...caveat emptor! read more
