The menu is equally divided between Mexican and Spanish choices. This variety is a welcome change to your typical Mexican joint. They ARE YOUR TYPICAL place for two reasons. 1. If you are at this type of restaurant the standard drink is the margarita. I've tried three different versions here and they are all just fine but nothing special. 2. On my last visit I ordered the SACRAMENTO PLATTER for $13.99. It included a Beef Enchilada, Chile Relleno and a hard shell Chicken Taco along with the usual accompaniments. It was hot and tasty and just fine but once again nothing special. I've visited here more than once and the customer service has always been fine. Had lunch here on Wednesday and frankly, it was just bad. I really hate saying that because everyone is always so nice in there and the service is good but the quality of food was just poor. Our sandwiches were almost inedible and the fries they served were overcooked yet flavorless. The salsa was okay but the chips seemed old. Of course this was a time I recommended it to a friend. As relatively new residents in Frederick, we had been in search of a good Mexican place we could rely on. Although Café Bueno was quite nice, we were still looking for a good place to sit down and enjoy a good meal and a good margarita. We found it at Mariachi. Having driven by this place dozens of times, the unusual exterior made us hesitate. But when we finally decided to come in for a meal we were delightfully surprised. Now, we have to admit the decor is not especially exciting; it is quite simple and low-key. But as soon as we got our first half-pitcher of the house margaritas, we knew we were in the right place. I'm not sure how they make them, but they were delicious there was no need for us to go to the Cadillac and the price was right. It didn't take me long to find my go to simple dish of a chicken quesadilla off the appetizer menu. It's what I get almost every time we come here. (There is a whole world of quesadillas that are so so, but it takes a real Mexican place to make a really good one, and Mariachi delivers!) Mariachi is not just Mexican, it also makes is a couple of different Spanish items in the menu. The one time I got one of those, I have to admit it was fabulous. Finally, the service here is outstanding. Friendly and attentive. And that refers to everyone who had waited on us, especially Jackie! In summary, you're not going to necessarily want to come here for the ambience (although they do use white table clothes, which is a nice touch and they always refill your water very quickly). But the fabulous food and drink and service make this the BEST Mexican/Spanish restaurant in Frederick in my humble opinion. read more

Friend's former boss had recommended this place years ago. Kept meaning to try it and finally did and we'll be back! Mariachi Margarita is a must!! So good! We had the cerviche for an appetizer, that was seasoned well. Would have liked to have some additional seafood in it, but was good. I had the Santa Fe Platter which had Chile Relleno, Chicken Enchilada and Chicken Tamale. So tasty and soo much food! Friend had the chimichanga and that looked good. Both meals came with rice, refried beans, sour cream. Had the fried ice cream for desert and that was a must have! Crunchy topping and yummy sauce! Will be back again! Maryland has a few good Mexican/latin american resturaunts. El Derado in Easton, Mangos Grill in Laurel, and now Meriachi's in Frederick. We have eaten in most of the highly praised establishments in MD and DC, and they are merely pretentious imitations. This place was a surprise. The margaritas are OK, but the food was quietly authentic, with sophisticated spices. If you have to, there is the TexMex, but I had a cuban styled pork dish, and others had a cerviche based salad. (Salsa needs help.) The plantains were prepared in a methods different from our cuban friend's method, but neverless excellent. The bill was also a surprise, given MD/DC. PLAN TO RETURN! Tried this place for the first time on a Friday night. We got in quick which was nice since there was a wait at other near by places. The inside is nice, decent menu and great service . However the food was pretty over priced. $18 for a burrito that just had steak inside and sauce on top. The margaritas were good. So we had been to the Rehoboth location and loved it. We tried the Frederick location once and thought it was ok and kind of never went back. Well, we visited yesterday for Father's Day and were blown away by the food and service! My husband said it was one of the best meals he has EVER eaten and wants to go back immediately. He got the LOMO SALTADO and the meat was cooked to perfection and the flavors were amazing! I got the salmon special and have never had a better salmon dish in my life. Ill be honest, when I think Mexican food I don't think "fine dining". I want good food in casual atmosphere where I can really enjoy a marg and little to mexican ditties. This place was an odd mix of not being any of these things. The place has white tablecloths and linens---but then you get a spiral plastic menu. Either go casual like the menu, or nice like the table styling--you can't be all things at once. The chips and salsa lacked any real appeal--the salsa tasted very vinegar like infact. I ordered the spinach enchiladas, and they were good--the spinach was certainly fresh. However the side were boring, bland black beans and white rice. So, while the service was great, this place suffers an identity crisis. If I were them I would go casual----make it more festive--that what most people want in a mexican place. read more

I stopped in for lunch while attending a conference in Frederick, opting to go out and find something other than the boxed lunch provided by the conference organizers. Looking back, I probably should have stayed at the conference center. Don't get me wrong.....the service was great (of course, I was the only one in the place), and the food was OK....but it was just that, OK. I ordered the spinach enchiladas, expecting something really nice and creamy/cheesy. What I got was a LOT of spinach, with very little flavor from the sauce. The beans were alright but nothing special, as was the rice. Their dessert list didn't have anything that really appealed to me, although the server insisted that their chocolate flan was amazing. Good Mexican food, on the busier side of Frederick. The building that houses Mariachi has lived many lives. My older brother drank underage there, at the Gold Dust Inn. Many management changes later, I drank and danced there at the Rabbit's Foot, or several other names. At some point, I think it even featured male strippers. And now it's calmed down, turned the bar into an open kitchen, and turns out some pretty non-controversial Mexican food. We've visited three or four times, and they do a pretty good job on the food and service. The decor is above average as well, with some departures from the standard "I'm in a courtyard in old Mexico" look that you've seen so many times. Burritos, enchiladas, tamales, and the like have been good. The chile relleno (my favorite dish) is above average. Pretty good margaritas on the rocks. Our last visit, I happened to notice the dozens of baskets of tortilla chips, filled and ready to serve, piled high on shelves in several open storage rooms. That's an odd touch---not because they fill the baskets so far ahead of time, but because you can see the stockpiles. Maybe there's a better way to do this. Overall, another reasonable and satisfying fix for our craving for Mexican food. read more

OUTSTANDING!! This place is delicious! This is our second time coming here, and once again, everything was great. We are from California so we have a pretty high standard for Mexican food. Of course, nothing compares to California Mexican food, but this is pretty close. As far as east coast Mexican, 5STARS! I had the chihuahua platter...marvelous!! My wife had the beef enchiladas....delicious!!! The chips and salsa are on point and the habeñero salsa (by request) pretty hot and delicious for a restaurant. My 1st time there, will not go back. Chips and salsa were ok, salsa was very watery though I ordered the Seafood Paella and let me tell you, it was NOT good! I guess I should have known when i asked the waitress if it was made the same day and her reply: "oh, they make it fresh to order". Paella takes at least a couple hours to make, it cannot be made to order. I gave it a try anyways ... mistake. The rice in the dish was the same as the side dish rice served with most all other orders. The seafood in the dish was WAY overcooked - the shrimp and squid rubbery, the mussels were tough, the clam (single clam) was just mush and disgusting. There was also sand in the one of the mussels! Worst of all, it was so salty!!! WHY??? Lesson Learned: only order stuff that you know the kitchen has to make fresh, a dish like this is almost certainly gong to be "microwave magic'" or what you might expect from a cafeteria chow line. I gave 2 stars only because the chips were ok, and $2 draft beer during happy hour. read more

We were very happy to have found a good Mexican place near Ijamsville since we normally go to DC. The staff is Friendly. Very good steak ( Carne Asada). My husband like his beef enchilada. The service here was great. The tres leches cake was amazing!! Most of the food was good although generally over salted. However, stick with the Mexican food. We thought we'd try the paella - very wrong choice. It was horrible. I don't think it should even be called "paella". It should have been called "over-salted and yet still bland seafood over soupy Mahatma saffron rice packet". That said, the service was great. They did reconcile for the bad paella, then delivered that amazing dessert. I would go back again, but I think I'd get the enchiladas or the burrito! read more

While my standard is high for good Mexican food (being from the S.F. Bay area and currently living in L.A.) I have to say I've never been to a place where all I could taste was salt in my food. I had the carne asada plate. Portions are huge but it fell short on the taste. My first bite was ok but as I took my second and third bite, it got saltier (the hot sauce could not even mask the taste). My friends who got the duck and the paella had the same complaint. The only thing that was tasty were the plantains. However, I would give them an extra star for friendly service and nice decor. read more

Service has always been very good, save last night when I felt a bit pressured to get an appetizer, she asked us so many times! I'm not a pushover though! I just wanted my entree, plus I always fill up on the complimentary chips and salsa. Food has always been pretty good, my only complaint is my crunchy tacos quickly turn not-so-crunchy because they are placed between the rice and other toppings. Mariachi is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. I love the salmon with the caper sauce, the enchiladas, and the chocolate mousse. We are foodies and love Mexican. Just tried this place for the first time tonight. This was some of the best Mexican we have ever had! The fajitas were out of this world..seasoning was so flavorful on the chicken, shrimp and steak. The home made salsa and guacamole are amazing! Best fried ice cream of all Mexican places we have been. The addition of the crunchy baked biscuit on the bottom with cinnamon and the right amount of caramel sprinkled on it, brought it to a whole new level! The outside area is quaint, relaxing and made you feel as if you were in another country on vacation. The music, plants and lighting set the mood. The inside is a warm, relaxing, very nice atmosphere. Shame on the reviews that complain about wait times for the same reason! With so many workers being paid to stay home, there are bound to be staffing shortages. Get over yourselves! We had no wait and our waitress was fantastic! Even if we had encountered a wait we understand what is going on.. In addition to the amazing food the place is spotless and always being cleaned! Very comforting to see given the current situation. Although it is an unassuming brick exterior, Mariachi is lovely on the inside. From the muted but still colourful paint job down to the cloth napkins folded into hats sitting on the crisp white tablecloths, it is a very calming and pleasant decor. The waitstaff is very friendly and highly efficient. Our ice teas and water glasses were never empty. Food was delivered piping hot and several discreet trips were made to our table to see if there was anything we needed. We saw the manager walking around keeping things running smoothly. He also found time to visit every table and ask about the experience. We started out with warm, thin corn chips and a very neutral tasting fresh salsa with lots of tomatoes and onions. If you like yours spicier, they have hot sauce. They gladly refilled our chip basket without us even asking. There were four of us, my parents, my husband and me. My fourth visit was to celebrate my Dad's 87th Birthday. Normally, my Dad doesn't want to go to a Mexican restaurant (He thinks ketchup is spicy.) but I had discovered Mariachi has a wonderful cream of crab soup. He loves seafood and loves soup, so it was a no brainer. It is very creamy, loaded with shredded crab and some mild peppers. (Dad didn't even notice those.) It is hands down the best cream of crab soup I have ever had. The soup is very filling so Dad didn't order anything else. I also ordered tamales from the lunch menu. Inside the corn masa was shredded chicken and potatoes. They were cooked just right and served with rice, beans, pico de gallo and a dollop of sour cream. I ate one and brought the other one with rice and beans home for supper. Tamales are excellent to reheat. My Mom got a shredded chicken chimichanga, also from the lunch menu. It was a huge portion, stretching all the way across the plate with the same accompaniments. I think she ate a third of it before she gave up. She really liked it and she is very picky. My husband got the lunch combo called Charro. This consists of a cheese enchilada and a shredded beef crispy taco. He, too, could not finish his meal. Surprisingly, he liked the cheese enchilada better. Usually, he is strictly a meat guy. He liked the blend of cheeses and how melty hot it was. The taco was stuffed full of tasty shredded beef. There was barely any room left for the tomatoes and lettuce. The highlight of our visit came at the end. I used my very poor, broken Spanish to tell the manager it was my Dad's Birthday, his age and name. This was so my parents didn't understand what I was saying. Thankfully, the manager did. A big portion of tres leches cake came out along with the prerequisite sombrero. "Happy Birthday" was sung to "Ricardo" and we dug into the cake. It was moist, delicious and must have had an inch of whipped cream on top with a strawberry sauce piped over the whipped cream. A cherry in the middle finished it off. Came here for Valentines day and it was somewhat of a zoo. The term "reservations" had no meaning what so ever and it seems as though the Hispanic folks got seated first as they could talk their way into it with the host. Aside from our reservations being ignored the place is pretty good. The menu is split between Mexican and Spanish food so we got the fried plantains, lomo saltado and fajitas. The fajitas (steak & chicken) were great an the lomo saltado was pretty good too but it was a tad salty. The restaurant is pretty big and had a nice atmosphere. Will definitely come back and try a few more items off the menu and will hopefully have a better experience in terms of being seated. read more

We ate here on a friends recommendation and were not disappointed. I had a platter that had beef and chicken alongside pinto beans and rice pilaf. For an extra $3 I could add a soda and flan (which I did). The steak was a little chewy but for the price I feel it was fair as it was a decent sized portion. We also ordered the queso (which was yellow, not white, if that concerns you). We also got the habenero hot sauce, which was delicious and yes, very hot. After several recommendations from others, decided to give it a try. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! Salsa was pretty much tomato water with an overwhelming amount of onions, $20 chicken fajitas consisted of a $3 chicken breast burnt and laid on a king size bed of onions with 2 slices of green pepper, and the guacamole (which I will admit was really good) was overpriced portion-wise. $40 for dinner and I left disappointed [because it was not what I expected nor wanted] as well as still hungry.
