Ate here this weekend for no other reason than it was the closest Mexican place near where we were. We didn't know anything about this place going in. Much nicer on the inside than the outside. Once inside it's very upscale. We got there around lunch time so the brunch menu was still available. It's a little on the pricey side but nothing outrageous. We were all very pleased with our meals! I got the Cancun Breakfast and it was great. Atmosphere and food were great, service was okay. Would recommend this place. read more

Been there twice now. Chips were fresh one time and not hot the second time. Salsa appeared home made and was okay, but not exceptional. The place looks like it used to be a bar or strip club based on the layout (not that I frequent either). The well dressed tables clash with the rundown look of the low ceiling panels. I had the fish tacos and they were good, but not top tier. 2nd visit had shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada that were good. Don't. The experience was generally disappointing. Salsa was awful. Clearly they had just added some pico de gallo to some canned tomato sauce and called it salsa. I had "Plato rojo" which was chile rellanos. It said 2 rellanos would be on the plate but it was one poblano halved and battered as individual rellanos. Food was absolutely on point. I had the Mexicana Fajitas which had chicken, steak and link chorizo on top of sauteed onions, peppers and a roasted jalepeno. Wonderfully delicious. The only reason I gave four stars versus five was because my waitress, while nice, was not as engaging as I like. I am from New Mexico...and it is hard to beat the Hatch Green Chile that is used widely in New Mexico restaurants. Eastern Mexican restaurants use inferior chiles... yuck. Mexican restaurants on the east coast are usually terrible. However, Mariachi is a very good restaurant. It is probably the best Mexican restaurant in Frederick, Maryland. Pure bliss...that's how I felt about the spinach enchiladas. Made with cheese and fresh spinach and topped with a creamy spinach sauce and served with white rice, beans, and pico de gallo (not sure if I've spelled everything correctly), it was wonderful. It was a lunch special that also came with a garden salad and a beverage for $9.99 (there were also other entree choices available with the special).. I'm not usually a big fan of Mexican food, but I hope to return here. I'm hoping they make the spinach enchiladas a part of the regular menu. Vegetarians and non vegetarians will both enjoy this. Unlike the other review, I did not find the food salty (and I don't usually use much salt, so I would have noticed). It was also not spicy, which suited my taste--I guess you'd have to tell them to spice it up if that's what you like. The salsa served with chips was very good flavorwise, but runny, making it difficult to not make a mess. Other people I was with ordered different dishes and all seemed pleased. I frequent this place and I have yet to not enjoy the food and experience. I live in Hagerstown but yet still make the trip. Their Spinach Quesadilla are my favorite. Not sure what they do to make them so delicious but it's hard for me to order anything else (though I have) when I come here. I'm also a fan of their chips and salsa. Had dinner there tonight. Three adults and a child(4yrs). The service was amazing. My daughter and I arrived first. We were shown to our table but needed to use the restroom. Upon our return waters for everyone and chips and salsa waiting for us. My daughter doesn't like ice and I asked for a water with no ice. The waitress didn't mind getting another at all. Plus I drank the other one and mine. I placed an order for guacamole, our waitress informed me of the drink being included with the kids meal and ordered her a milk too. The salsa was fresh and very tasty and full of flavor. The chips were good, light and not packed with salt. I saw another review saying the chips were odd/strange something like that, I totally don't get that. I had the steak fajitas, strip steak. It was packed with flavor and very tender. The other meal my friend got was made to order cheese and onion with red sauce only enchiladas. I thought he was going to lick the plate. My daughter got the steak strips from the kids menu, same steak as mine. The other meal was a combo platter. I don't recall everything with it but my wife enjoyed it. Also, the manager promptly brought a picture and crayons for my daughter to color. The service was spot on and so was the food. Don't expect to find the "usual" Mexican food menu or decor when visiting Mariachi. Sure, you can get a burrito and other typical offerings but this menu offers those and a whole lot more. Bring a couple of friends to share and explore some of the Spanish and other offerings (the number of seafood items on the menu especially surprised me). I had the Fajita Omlette off the brunch menu and found it sizable, well prepared and attractive as were the accompanying potatoes (fresh fruit is also served with this entrée). My order was served relatively quickly and the temperatures were good. Again, even the decor is unusual. Instead of yellow walls and red trim, Mariachi is bright and airy with a definite upscale feel. I found 2 groups of around 10 people but their presence did not negatively impact the number of smaller parties who seemed to be enjoying the place. The first impression was excellent thanks to a smiling, polite and knowledgeable host. My server (Yiduzka) was personable and checked back regularly. The kitchen staff hanging around outside the restrooms texting/emails was a bit of a surprise and a bit disconcerting but perhaps I'm the only one to notice. Give it a try when you're in the neighborhood and looking for something a bit different. You'll spend a few bucks more but with the range of menu and ambiance of Mariachi, you may find it worth the experience. read more

Better steak than a steakhouse! First time visiting and we were very impressed. The interior is nice with white tablecloths and napkins. The salsa was very fresh and not puréed into sauce like some places. The pico was perfect. I don't usually get refried beans as the consistency is weird for me. However, the pinto beans at Mariachi are amazing. Not mushy and flavored well. The rice was also good. Not overly spiced. The winner of the whole meal by far was the tacos carbon. The grilled steak in these soft tacos really does rival a steakhouse. Highly recommend a visit to this restaurant. read more

Everything else about the food here just fell flat. This place obviously takes the cheap road when it comes to the food, the guacamole wasn't fresh, and the enchiladas and chili rellenos had the texture of a frozen microwave dinner from 7-11. Even the rice was an unnatural yellow with indiscriminate bits of veggie matter and tasted like something found in a box from the dollar store. The food here sucks, plain and simple. I absolutely love Mariachi. In fact, I love it so much my husband literally has to go - "What do you want for dinner tonight - no Mariachi" because I will pick it every. single. time. First of all, the place is gigantic. It is so big that despite being a busy establishment, I have never once had to wait for a table. Because of this, Mariachi has become my "go-to" restaurant when I have family or friends visiting and need a large table on no notice. When you get there you immediately get chips and salsa. They don't skimp either, if your party is large, they'll bring you multiple bowls and keep filling if you want. Their salsa is delicious too! Their margaritas are also awesome and reasonably priced. You can get pitchers for $39 that will serve you multiple rounds for 4-5 adults. Now, on to my favorite part- OH MY GOODNESS the food. I'm embarrassed to admit I get the same thing every time (Carne Asada, you'll thank me later I promise!) but my family and friends have tried nearly everything on the menu and have never NOT loved a dish. My husband and I, along with our 3 year old went in for lunch. Very disappointed in the cost for what we ordered. A cheese quesadilla and rice KIDS meal was $9.00. More than my meal was, with significantly less food. Completely ridiculous. I know now why there weren't prices listed for kids meals. A small appetizer of guacamole for $12?!? I also ordered 2 rail margaritas that ended up costing almost $20. When I asked our server if the prices were correct she was very rude. We will never be back. Beware! I feel like I just got scammed. Although the staff and service were great, our food and drinks were mediocre and over-priced. The food looked like it was prepared by an eight year old. The shrimp dish that we ordered had no flavor, it came served with a ball of rice in the center, surrounded by a mix of half cooked veggies (jalepenos, green peppers, onion), and some tail-on shrimp. The salad had lettuce and whole sliced veggies on the side of the plate that you had to cut up and mix in on your own. Also, the salsa served at the table seems to be the "goya" brand. No self respecting mexican restaurant should be serving salsa from a bottle. If you go, I'd recommend sticking with the burritos and tacos, and stay away from the more complicated and expensive dishes. read more

I have been trying various Mexican restaurants in the area, and this one is now my favorite. The salsa and guacamole taste fresh and well seasoned. The beef is not ground beef and is well seasoned as is the chicken. They have homemade habanero salsa which is extremely hot and tasty. The chile relleno and tamales are quite tasty. Overall, I think this is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants around and would highly recommend it. The service was very good as well. read more

My wife and I were a bit tentative about heading to eat at Mariachi until a friend recommended it. The building used to be a night club and the outside is nothing to impress. However, we were pleasantly surprised at how nice the inside of the restaurant is --white table clothes, bar (small one), spacious seating, lots of windows. We sat and immediately ordered the classic margarita..actually we had two of them each. Very good, with a nice blend--not the sugary sour mix plus tequila you tend to get at some places. This was smooth and tasty. Our waiter was Hispanic, as all the staff looked to be. They worked in teams on each table and the service was excellent, made good recommendations and never left us wanting for anything. Chips and salsa came first. The salsa was tomato-based (not my favorite), but very good. I think we asked for seconds! I ordered the Carne Asada (skirt steak) for my meal. The steak was perfectly marinated and cooked just right. The sides were delightful and simple. My wife ordered Paella. The dish was served table side and arranged nicely on a plate direct from the Paella pan. The saffron rice was delicious and the seafood, chicken and vegetables were plump and tender. I highly recommend both dishes. For dessert, we ordered soapapillas (deep-fried puffy dough). They were fried perfectly and served hot; sprinkled with honey and powdered sugar...excellent and worth every calorie! We loved the restaurant, with one small exception: The ceiling is low and there does not seem to be a great amount of ventilation, so there was a low-hanging cloud of smoke across most of the restaurant --I am guessing from the open kitchen and significant number of orders of sizzling fajitas. Don't let that stop you from trying Mariachi. This place is a hidden treat and sure to become a hit. Easy to get to (Urbana Pike, Rte 355); easy to park, reasonably priced and lots of seating. read more

First impression walking in the door...not a Mexican restaurant. Looked like it should be a 1950's cafeteria or a rented hall at a VFW. Decor, or lack there of was bland and very sterile looking. The white table cloths were so very out of place and didn't help. The Cadillac margarita was very good. Chips were good and the salsa was very fresh tasting but could have used some cilantro. I ordered the Carnitas...well that is what it was called. Not like any carnita I have ever ordered (although I am from the west coast). The pork was very greasy and tasteless. The black beans were okay, but nothing special. I was so very disappointed. We moved here a few months ago and this was the first poor meal that we have eaten in Frederick. I think we will stick to the downtown area where we have yet to go wrong. read more
