The ambiance was very calm and modern. This would be a very nice place to study or do some work during the day. The cafe is located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. There is outdoor seating, but sometimes there are some interesting characters depending on the time of the day. I'm pretty sure it's always "seat yourself" & the bartenders try to be mindful of people at the tables surrounding the bar. I'm sure if it's crowded then you should go up to the bar to get a drink. I only was there for a glass of wine so I didn't get the try any food or coffee items but if it's anything like the wine, then it won't miss a beat. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We came here after a yoga class and it was probably an hour or so before they were closing. So I do feel like I want to go back just because I don't think that we got the full experience because they were almost closing. The reason why I would like to go back is that a few of the drinks that I wanted to order they ran out of the ingredients to make them. I don't know if this was because it was late at night or if they just didn't have them to begin with. I also tried to order a cheese plate for our party just for a snack and another appetizer and they said that they couldn't because the kitchen was closed. I wasn't really understanding why the kitchen would close so much earlier than the bar but maybe that's what life after covid is like or maybe I just don't go out enough to fancy places. We were able to take a corner area and the chairs were very comfortable and the service was very attentive. The server was very apologetic about the kitchen and the ingredients that they were missing. Which I'm sure is not their fault but it was nice to hear that they may have cared. The drink that I ended up getting was very good I think it was a play on a Manhattan. It was strong and it hit the spot. I would definitely come back here to try their appetizers and drinks again. I LOVE this place! Margaux is a bar/coffee shop/cafe right on Penn Avenue in East Liberty. I love working here because it feels like I'm in an art gallery. The art is very cool and abstract, and the space is bright, open, and airy. It feels like a museum, without being stuffy. I have worked here in the day time at the bar and at a table. They have many different comfortable seating options. During the weekdays you order your coffee/food at the coffee bar, and on the weekends there is table service. I enjoy their oat milk latte and salmon avocado toast for day time. In the evening the lights get dim and it's a very cool spot to hangout. Their drink the "Royal Afternoon" is aperol based, and it's delicious! The Cabernet they serve is great too. My friends and I ordered the cheese plate and winter salad last time, and the cheese plate was perfect for sharing. Their desserts are INCREDIBLE. We shared the opera and caramel apple tart and both were as beautiful as they were delicious. I highly recommend this place for a coffee meeting, date night, or just to get a glass of wine and dessert at the bar! Absolutely loved visiting Margaux for a late breakfast! The morning salad and breakfast sandwich were so good and plated very beautifully. We also got iced chai lattes which were very tasty. The restaurant itself is beautiful too, such a cool vibe in here. It seemed like a lot of people who were there had set up shop to get some work done while enjoying some food or a beverage. The staff was friendly and helpful when we were ordering. I didn't have the easiest time with parking which isn't necessarily shocking in the heart of east liberty. There are some parking lots within a couple blocks, so that's a solid back up if you don't get lucky with a street spot. read more

An aesthetically pleasing, modern cafe AND bar! I've been a handful of times now and have covered the morning, afternoon and evening. Love that it's open all day and seamlessly transitions. Good place to post up with a laptop during the day and even better place to bring a date for drinks during the evening without the pressure of a full meal. In fact, don't count on dinner here - menu is limited but everything I've tried is high quality. Baked ricotta with garlic is delicious!! Dessert was beautifully presented but lacked some substance IMO. The main negative for me is the location. You'll have to find parking on busy Penn Ave or a side street and it's not the most welcoming part of Penn/East Liberty. I also wish they would expand their menu! read more

Pros- Aesthetically pleasing. Workers are very friendly. Cons- food and drinks are just so-so. I got the chicken salad toast and for $8 I think the portion was alright but the chicken tasted like it was canned. Nothing wrong with that, but again for the price I didn't expect that. Drinks wise the coffee (iced americano and cold brew) wasn't anything special and the iced matcha is very milky and not that strong if you're into that. Overall, pricey if you're a student but for a working adult it's right in line with what you would expect from a gentrified East-liberty restaurant. They haven't started their evening hours yet nor their brunch. Would definitely go back once they start evening hours to check out their drinks. read more

What could you not like in this sophisticated, chic spacious spot that doubles as a cafe and cocktail bar? I've been here for coffee and a bite with a friend at 2pm as well as late night cocktails and it was a pleasant experience both times. The cocktail bar offers a limited menu starting at 1pm and fully opens later in the afternoon. Note that kitchen closes at 10! I think I like the multipurpose-ness of this place most. I could go there to do some remote work, or get brunch with friends, or even have a group party at the bar in the evening. The space is beautiful with pink details, towering plants and modern chandeliers, as well as art showcased from local artists. The only reason I docked it a star was the confusion on opening times of the bar itself, and lack of gluten free options. But if you want a chic place to stop by in east liberty for gorgeous drinks (peep the pics below!) then I recommend Margaux. PS if you like lavender the Bonne Vivant is wonderful read more

Located on the busy avenue of Penn, and located near the beautiful East liberty Presbysterian Church, a seat outside would have been an easy choice, especially on a beautiful crisp autumn afternoon, but decided to dine indoors. The interior of the establishment is absolutely beautiful. It was giving me minimalist vibes, which I instantly enjoyed! Once I sat down, I was greeted immediately by a server and handed me three menus. One was for drink, daily, and evening items/options. Once I decided, I order a Condoni Pinot Grigio (VO) and Seared Corn Cakes along with the Smoked Salmon Rillette. All three complimented each other very well, however if I had to choose out of these two entrees as my favorite, it would have to me the Salmon Rillette hands down. Absolutely delicious!! We went for brunch and ate every last bite. The Mocha and Chai came out the perfect temperature to drink immediately. I had the sweet potato hash, the pieces of sweet potato were wonderfully seasoned and cut to the perfect size to have a little bit in each bite. We also got the breakfast sandwich, and yogurt parfait. The breakfast sandwich was sweet and savory and the biscuit was perfectly crumbly and delicious. Yogurt parfait was game changing, the raspberry and granola had the perfect ratio to the amount of yogurt making it a delicious side that two people can share. We'll definitely be back! read more

If this existed in ny/la, it would be smaller or more expensive, but otherwise I really felt transported to one of the coasts. We got the improved Japanese cocktail and the nügroni (not misspelled). They have a coffee bar for the day and a cocktail/wine bar in the evening, with bites offered for both occasions. Don't confuse this place for a dinner destination though, definitely only a small plate kind of place. I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile. I rarely find myself in this section of East Liberty but today I made this cafe-by-day-bar-by-night concept my lunch time destination. Paid parking was readily available nearby. I LOVE their space! The openness, the natural light from the two sides of all window walls, the lighting fixtures, the artwork, the live plants, the stylish furniture. The staff is wonderful and welcoming. There are outlets to charge your electric devices everywhere inviting you to stay awhile. And despite there being a fair amount of people there during my visit on a Thursday afternoon, it seemed quieter than average. Maybe because you didn't have to talk above music playing. It was so pleasant! They were out for the day of the first two items I tried to order from their morning & coffee menu. And I believe they transition from that menu to their "Evenings" menu about 3 o'clock. Thankfully, I did score their last spinach, goat cheese, tomato quiche. It was too late in the day according to me to order a caffeinated beverage and too early for a cocktail, so I didn't get to sample any of the beverage offerings. This has become my favorite go to place to study. For starters, the atmosphere alone has brought me out to spend hours reading, studying, catching up on emails etc. Also, the quality of the drinks and desserts are delightful. One other bartender (three in a place so small and for the wait, idk) came up and asked if I was cashed out but now had the last of my martini (obvious that I was finishing) now in her hand. On my recent visit I tried the croque monsieur on a croissant, and it was delicious. It was served with a cranberry sauce of sorts, which was interested, and it suited the flavors really well! I've also visited in the past for appetizers/small plates and drinks in the evening. I visited Margaux on a Sunday for brunch and it was considerably busy. The atmosphere was cute, but the overall layout was pretty confusing. We weren't sure wether or not you needed to be seated or if you sat yourself, and you do have to seat yourself which was difficult since there weren't any open tables. We waited a bit and eventually saw a table leave so we snagged that one. There were only three waitresses covering the whole place (which is pretty big) so service was understandably slow. I ordered the chicken salad toast which was very tasty, and the matcha iced latte which tasted like mostly milk with a hint of matcha. It took an hour for our toast and drinks to come. Overall, the food was tasty but I probably won't be back considering how confusing the layout was as well as the slow service. read more

My friends and I from work recently started a book club and needed a meeting spot. Wanting to check this place out for awhile, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. The book: We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry I knew from the start that the menu was limited to smaller plates but was disappointed to find a sign on the door when we arrived that the oven was broken. This eliminated practically all of the items we were interested in trying, including the baked ricotta and chorizo croquettes. Additionally, someone came over to our table to let us know they were short staffed so we would have to go to the bar to order drinks and food. Given the situation, we settled on the large charcuterie and cheese board as well as several of their cocktails. I thought the charcuterie included a nice variety and really enjoyed my Royal Cup (a play on Pimm's Cup). My friend also ordered their seasonal mocktail that was so meticulously crafted it would have induced even the tipsiest into sober curiosity. The Parting Shot as my second drink (a pear-forward take on a French 75), however, was a little underwhelming if not generously portioned and, I probably would have done better with their house champagne cocktail. In terms of location, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place for a book club or cozy conversation. Music was kept to a minimum and the decor makes you feel like you're in someone's posh but inviting living room. read more
