We had lunch there after touring Hills and Dales Estate.It was shortly before losing but they welcomed us warmly. They have an extensive menu with a variety of dishes. One of our party had very tender and flavorful clams and mussels and the caprese salad, which was fresh and colorful. The other chose the white bean bruschetta and a half Cobb salad. The salad was delish but the bruschetta could have used a little more seasoning, though is was fresh and generous. The server was attentive and made lunch a pleasure. We will be back. read more

This is Lagrange's 5 star establishments. The food is outstanding and we'll portioned. We have 6 different enters and all have been fabulous. They also have 20 micro bres on draft so you try several different options. The only down side is the overall price. The meal is really good, and I love the simple atmosphere but it feels like they stick it to you when the bill comes out. This is still one of my top restaurant and will continue going there (occasionally). read more

The food is so amazing that I can't believe it's in Lagrange! The atmosphere is also great. Try the seseme ginger dumplings and white wine sangrias and they were heavenly!!!!! The service does leave something to be desired though, which is why I didn't give them five stars. read more

I drive from Montgomery and friends drive from Atlanta to meet halfway and eat at Mare Sol. Every mouthful, from cocktails to dessert, is top quality. On a recent visit I ordered the smoked Cornish game hen and my friend had salmon atop a bed of roasted vegetables. We finished off with Red, White and Blue cake and left smiling. read more

Embarrassing! Took my parents here for their 50th wedding anniversary. I had made reservations three weeks in advance, and asked for a booth. I wanted to make a special evening for them. We got there and it was freezing cold in there, so bad that everyone was still holding on and wearing their coats through dinner. I asked three different people to please turn the air off. If that wasn't miserable enough, my dad's dinner was absolutely disgusting looking. The short ribs were mostly fat and just no taste extremely flavorless. I never have sent back a meal in my life, but we sent his back and it took forever to get something else. My ravioli was not bad, but the sauce was yucky. Service was average at best. My husband was impressed by the selection of beer on tap, dogfish 90 and St. Bernadus, which are hard to find outside of a metro area. The waiter was efficient and friendly. The atmosphere was lively but not too loud. We ordered the Greek Dips, three tasty and unique selections served with Pita bread, the grilled vegetable salad, great selection of well prepared veggies served with mozzarella and pesto, and the fire and smoke pizza. The drinks and dip arrived quickly and the other dishes right after that. We enjoyed the entire experience and will definitely be back! read more

I couldn't tell you about the food. It might be amazing. However, the service is awful. The party of 10 I was with last weekend was turned away without being seated for dinner. We went at the recommendation of a hotel clerk that checked our group in. There was a delayed greeting and when the host finally approached us we were told reservations were required. We did make note of a large table that was empty but left and found another place to eat. When we returned to the hotel later that evening the clerk asked how dinner worked out and we told her that we were turned away since we didn't have reservations and her facial expression said it all! She then shook her head and told us that wasn't the case. I later went to their website and saw that reservations are not required. And lots of reviews here mention drop-ins. If I could give zero stars I would. Before I patronize any business I expect to be treated well as a customer... and given the circumstances it seemed we were not the right shade for their establishment. I went on a Saturday night with my husband and a friend of ours. When we arrived the place was not too busy and we were seated without a wait. The decor in the place and the options on the menu were nice and we were eager to try the food. Our waitress brought us some water and asked if we wanted anything more to drink. We stated we wanted to think about it, and she left to let us look at the menu. When she returned we asked a few questions, and then placed our order. We ordered tapas, so there were multiple different items ordered. We noticed she did not write down the order, and she said not to worry, she had a good memory. At that time some of her friends walked in and it was almost like she could not wait to go talk to them. She left our table, seated the friends, and talked to them for a couple of minutes. About 4 minutes later she came back with an order pad and asked us to repeat our order. Never once did she ask again if we wanted anything more to drink, and we had been ready to order a mixed drink. Below is a list of what was ordered and a description: White bean soup - quite tasty, however not warm. The soup was $4 for a cup, and it was quite a small serving. Risotto Balls - pretty good, but again a small serving (3 golf ball sized risotto balls) and it was $6. Shrimp and grits - mild taste, only 4 small shrimp in the bowl Fried Brie - the order for this was entered incorrectly and we were brought stuffed mushrooms instead (these were warm and cheesy, which was good but they were quite greasy). When the brie did arrive, there were three very small pieces on a plate covered in a freakishly red fruit spread. Again, a very small portion for the price. Fish and chips - the cod was very overcooked, making it tough. There was one large "log" of fish on top of a small serving of seasoned french fries. They came with a spicy dipping sauce, which was quite good. $12 for one piece of fish. Fish tacos - two small tacos which were quite good. Cheesecake - pretty good Tiramisu - pretty good. Not too mushy which was good. Boston creme pie - the cake was dry and the "cream" was a fluffy white frosting, not a custard which is traditionally found in a Boston creme pie. Coffee - pretty standard Overall I was not at all impressed with the food, or the service. When the order was placed the second time, ketchup was ordered to go with the fries and it was never brought out. We ran out of water during the meal and it was never refilled (we asked for a carafe to keep on the table and we emptied it). The waitress was absent from the table for long periods of time, which was frustrating when we needed something. The place did get busier, but the place was not too busy that the service should have been this infrequent. We saw a manager pop around to a few other tables, but never once did he come to ours (I would have mentioned some of the issues had he). I feel that the prices are too high for the amount of food you get, and the service is not great. If I have a bad experience somewhere, I generally will give them another chance. In this case, I do not see myself going back. I was extremely underwhelmed with the food which overwhelmed my wallet ($75 before tip for 3 people). read more

We had one of the most pleasant, leisurely lunches at Mare Sol. We tried the Lobster Dip, since other reviewers recommended it. It was good, but having lived in Maine for years and enjoying lobster in almost every way, we're spoiled. We would have like more lobster. Not thrilled with the tortilla chips, either. Still, it was a good appetizer. We'll try the mushroom caps next time. We tried the Ravioli in Tomato Sauce and the Reuben Sandwich with Parmesan Steak fries. I was pleasantly surprised by the bread, which was described as French bread, but was more like the rustic Tuscan breads I make from scratch or buy from artisans. Yummy. The ravioli was good, but next time I'll try something else. My husband is a big fan of Reubens and said this one was excellent. We were there after the lunch crowd, so it was quiet. Perfect for us, but not for those wanting a quick bite before rushing off to other things. read more

We have tried this restaurant before the past two symphony concerts & both times the service was terrible. Food was good but service was very slow & not professional. This past time with a table of 6, my son didn't get his food until everyone else was finished theirs!!! (How hard is it to cook a burger?!). After complaining several times, our waiter came out saying he was sorry but the food is on it's way out in a "moment" - 10 mins later! He did give my son a free beer but still charged him full for the VERY late meal. Everyone at our table was shocked & disappointed that they didn't comp his meal. Oh well, I hope the restaurant values the $12 charge vs. losing at least 2 customers for life! read more

Originally from Atlanta, it's easy to pick on the restaurant choices in Lagrange. However Mare sol is up there. The pasta is always Al dente and I believe homemade. It's one of my favorite places to dine in Lagrange in terms of food. The only downside is the service. Aside from taking your order and bringing the food to your table- your not going to get anything else. read more

Good service and atmosphere. Most of the food items are very good. Flat bread appetizers good. Seafood fettucini is more like a fish fettucini - wouldn't recommend that one; however, most of the main entrees are very good. Drinks are pricey. Owner is a good guy. We were in town to visit the Safari Park and Callaway Gardens and wanted a nice, non- chain restaurant, and somehow ended up at Mare Sol. It was a semi-busy Friday night, but were seated within a couple of minutes. David, our waiter, informed us that since it was a couple days after Valentine's Day they were out of a couple of things. He was friendly, efficient and helpful throughout the whole meal. My wife and I split the Greek platter and fried pickles as and a couple of beers off of their great draft selection. For our main course my I wife had the seafood Alfredo, our four year old son had the children's pizza and I had the gyro. All of it was above par and better than we expected. The tapas were $8, entrees see $12-$15 and the beers were $5. Overall, we were very pleased and would recommend Mare Sol. read more

Stopped through on our way from Biloxi to Atlanta. Super friendly service and the food was awesome. Best spinach artichoke dip I think I've ever had. The cowboy ribeye was to die for. The shepherd's pie was a little "winey" for my taste, but I'm not a big wine fan. The kids got pizza, which was also awesome. I didn't drink, but saw that they had a pretty lengthy beer and wine selection, as well as top-shelf mixed drinks. I also noticed a $2 daily beer special...I would have had a great time with that 20 years ago. Highly recommend...great job! read more

Decent happy hour but that's about it. Portions are very small on the entrees, especially for the expensive price. I've given this place a try several times now, but have not been that impressed with the consistency of the entrees. I think it's time for a new head chef, AGAIN. read more

I ordered the $15.00 bar-b-qued shrimp dinner special. I got 4 medium-sized shrimp, 3 fried grit cakes the size of silver dollars, and a vegetable medley which included slivers of corn, mushrooms, and red peppers. I've seldom been so hungry when I've finished my dinner! (And I'm not a big eater.) The dessert was called apple crisp, which was baked apples and cranberries--but absolutely no crisp. read more

I was surprised to find a trendy place like this in the rural-South; it reminded me of all the yuppy-places in Orange County (which I avoid). There menu is not Southern at all. I dined at Mare Sol on Thursday night, October, 6, 2011. I was promptly and courteously greeted and seated by Lauren, the hostess and who was also my server. Lauren took my order as I was being seated since I knew from reading the sandwich board outside the restaurant what I wanted for my nightly repast. I ordered one of the evening specials, the pecan crusted tilapia. The dish consisted of the fish, broccolini, pineapple and cucumber couscous salad, and a grits cake. The presentation was nice with the fish covering the grits cake, the salad on the side of the fish and the broccolini over the tilapia. The service was excellent and the meal quite scrumptious. I especially liked the main course which I think is superior to Ruby Tuesday's herb-crusted tilapia. The total cost of my dinner was $16.00 plus the 7% Georgia sales tax of $1.12 which made a total of $17.12. Due to the harsh economic times, I only left a 25% tip on the original $16.00. Thus I escaped the restaurant after only having spent $21.12. Of course, I did not purchase a drink nor did I peruse or order off the dessert menu. Lauren faithfully did keep my glass of water refilled. An analogous meal at Ruby Tuesday would consist of herb-crusted tilapia, broccoli, and rice pilaf. The price tag at Ruby Tuesday would be $12.99 plus $0.91 in tax for a total of $13.90. A similar tip of 25% on the $12.99 would yield a $3.25 tip or a grand total of $17.15 at Ruby Tuesday. I feel that the meal at Mare Sol was better, but it might be hard for a diner to justify paying almost $4.00 more a similar meal in today's thrifty economic climate. read more
