We visited Steak & Company in downtown West Point, GA on a Saturday night and left really disappointed--mostly due to disorganization, lack of service, and a manager who handled the situation poorly.
We arrived around 7:30 PM and were told there would be a wait, so we went to the bar for cocktails. The bar was almost full, but there was no bartender. After several minutes, a bartender finally appeared and took our drink orders. I ordered a Kettle One and soda, and Greg ordered a dirty Kettle One martini. Our drinks didn't arrive for almost 10 minutes, and only then did she ask the other two guests in our party what they wanted.
One guest ordered an amaretto sour--a basic drink--and was told they couldn't make it because they didn't have the ingredients. It's literally amaretto and sour mix. Meanwhile, we kept hearing staff mention the kitchen was "backed up," even though the restaurant didn't seem that busy for a Saturday night.
We were finally seated around 8:30 PM. The waitress took our drink order, and when Greg ordered a Kettle One and tonic, she looked completely puzzled and said she'd never heard of that. We explained that Kettle One was their premium vodka.
Appetizers eventually came out and were fine--nothing special. We placed our dinner order and ordered another round of drinks. Entrées started hitting the table around 9:00 PM, along with our drinks--but only two of us received our food. The other two guests were still waiting on their entrées, so they ordered cocktails to go with dinners they hadn't even received yet.
Then we were told it was after 9 PM and the bar and restaurant were closed, so they would not serve any more cocktails. We still didn't even have all of our food. Greg went to the bar to ask about it and was told again the bar was closed.
We asked to speak to the manager. When he finally came to the table, he was rude and dismissive, repeating that the bar and restaurant were closed. At that point, one guest still hadn't gotten her entrée, and our food was getting cold while we waited for the last plate. The manager said he "couldn't have his staff staying all night making drinks," but we weren't asking them to stay all night--we were asking for basic service while we were still actively being served dinner.
They offered water or soft drinks instead, so the guests asked for water with lemon. The manager walked away, and no water ever came.
As someone who worked in restaurants for 20+ years and formerly owned one, I can say this was not just "a busy night." They were clearly short staffed, but the bigger issue was the lack of leadership, communication, and professionalism. The food was okay, but nothing that justified the price. At $30-$50 per entrée, you expect service that's at least on par with a casual sit-down restaurant--not worse than fast food.
This place has potential, but it missed the mark in too many ways. We won't be back. And honestly, if things don't change soon, I give it six more months. Maybe. read more
