We stopped at Mare Sol before picking up our current foster, Walker, and it was such a pleasant surprise. This was one of the first restaurants in a long time where I genuinely had trouble deciding what to order because there were so many menu options that sounded amazing. I finally settled on the arugula salad with shrimp added, and I'm so glad I did. The shrimp were seasoned perfectly and practically melted in my mouth. Every bite tasted fresh, balanced, and thoughtfully prepared. The arugula was crisp and flavorful, making it a light meal that still felt satisfying. The atmosphere was welcoming, the menu offered plenty of choices, and the quality of the food was outstanding. If you're in the area and looking for a place that goes beyond the ordinary, Mare Sol is definitely worth a stop. I'll be thinking about those shrimp for a long time! read more

In Lagrange for a short visit. Looked about for a restaurant recommendation, something other than the usual lunchtime fare. Arrived here about 2 PM, so if they have a crowd at noon we were lucky to have few diners. Spouse ordered a flat bread dish and for me a Classic Cobb salad. She thought the flatbread was delicious, lots of great toppings. As for the Cobb a heaping dish, greens, avocado, eggs, blue cheese, tomatoes, grilled chicken, and a heap of great bacon. Not a negative but you get what you pay for. A little pricey but well worth the quality. Certainly on our list for our next town visit. read more

I was visiting family in LaGrange and we went to Mare Sol for dinner. It's a cute looking restaurant right in downtown with an expansive, albeit pricey, menu. My hopes were high. We started with the Brussels sprouts with bacon and Mike's hot honey. The portion was generous which was good given the $15 price. Well-roasted with tons of flavorful crispy bits and thick cut bacon. A great starter! And that's where the positives ended. For dinner I ordered the steak frites, which were $29. I'm used to paying $30+ for steak frites in upscale French restaurants in NYC, DC, and other fine dining capitals, so I was a bit surprised to be paying that in LaGrange. Whatever I was expecting, I nearly fell out my seat when the server set it on the table. Steak frites? I'd barely call it a kid's steak and fries. Five small slices of steak on a plate much too big for the portion. I don't think I've ever seen a more pathetic entree - and at that price point it felt like highway robbery. Everyone from the waiter to the chef to the owner should have been embarrassed to give that to a paying customer. If you want to call it steak with a side of fries, fine. But calling it steak frites is an insult to French and Belgian cuisine. Save your money. Go elsewhere and actually eat a full meal. read more

Diner with my global work department and boss. Ordered most of the appetizers which were pretty good. Linked the pork rinds with cheese dip, the other dips and chips or pita were also popular among our group. Pork chop Marsala was respectable and tasty. The short ribs that I first selected were not available. Ambiance was good for a work group. Apologies to everyone else, as we were probably loud enough to be annoying to surrounding diners. Deserts were very disappointing. Cream brûlée was so thin, the torched sugar crust was as thick as the custard. Service was not great. I requested soda water with lime and got no lime, when I asked for a refill and specified with lime this time, lime was provided. It is a convenient acceptable option for dinner when staying downtown LaGrange, but wouldn't go out of my way for it. I have eaten here many times in past years when staying downtown. In comparison it seems like they have adjusted their selection options for food and reduced servings to cut costs. The only beef available was a hanger steak. The place is cute and the staff is actually nice but I think we went too late. They normally close at 9 and it's also New Year's Eve. The She Crab soup has potential but it wasn't hot. My son loved the crab cakes but the shrimp wasn't that good but they were definitely big and had potential as well. Like I said I think it was because we came so late and they were about to close. Just tried this place for first time. Will never go back. Way overpriced. Tried the cauliflower buffalo wings. They were soggy and moist and tasted like they were microwaved. Cauliflower wings should be crispy on outside and taste like they were freshly fried/made...not microwaved. Worst cauliflower wings I have ever had in my entire life. Got the streak quesadilla. It was underwhelming. Would have liked for it to come out piping hot, fresh off grill and steak sizzling. It was just warmed through...no sizzle. Steak was chewy inside and lukewarm. Staying at the Great Wolf Lodge leaves a lot to be desired in terms of food. So we explored elsewhere and Yelp led me to Mare Sol in downtown LaGrange. Because I was on a low carb diet, we got a Wedge Salad, the Roasted Vegetables, and the Pork Chops. The Wedge Salad was great - simple, lettuce, bacon, cheese, dressing - very delicious and the perfect size to start your meal. Pork chops ($30)- cooked perfectly and again, super tasty. Roasted Vegetables - I've never ordered vegetables at a restaurant, ever (by itself), especially when it's $22. But my these were good. Good thing to be on a diet and experience this sort of thing I'd never order. We had a bunch leftover and at it over wheat crackers at home for a perfect snack. Quaint corner restaurant in downtown LaGrange. Stopped in one Saturday afternoon after visiting nearby Hill & Dale Estates. I had drinks and apps and both were excellent. Our server, Jenn, made a most delicious red sangria. It was full-bodied, rich and had diced fruit in it. She added a touch of peach to it which gave the drink a most magnificent tasteful twist on a traditional drink. I ordered an appetizer of Buffalo Cauliflower (but asked to hold the buffalo sauce.) We had a wonderful experience eating here before but we had a bad experience this time. We ordered Caesar Salad and it was full of brown salad. I asked for our salads to be replaced because there was so much brown salad I couldn't pick it out. Te waitress was very sweet about it. We waited quite a while for our main entree and when it arrived it was the wrong entree. Then a runner brought over a beer that we didn't order and mustard. This is the second time we have eaten at Mar Sol. We did not think our second visit could be worse than our first but we were wrong. The service was horrid, the food was indescribably bad. Well, to be fair, we did not eat at Mare Sol. However, we did attempt to eat at Mare Sol. We were in LaGrange for the weekend. While there we went to Beacon Brewery and enjoyed their beers. Mare Sol is owned by the Beacon Brewery folks. We ate at Tutto Peppe, which is attached to Beacon, and we really enjoyed the food albeit a tad bit on the expensive side with portions very small. The manager told us about one of their sister restaurants...Mare Sol. She said it more homey and very good. So, we went. The menu was tattered and hard to read...black with small black writing. While looking at the menu, our waitress came by and asked if we wanted something to drink. We asked what they had on tap, and she told us their draft system was down. She said they had beer in cans, and told us what it was. It was not a good choice at all and had no craft beers in cans. I guess beer shouldn't be the reason to not eat at a restaurant, but in reality, there wasn't anything on the menu that jumped out at me...and especially not enough to eat it without a decent beer. We told the waitress we weren't staying, and we walked across the street to Venucci...I will do a separate review on Venucci, but as a teaser...it was great. read more

If you are interested in a pretty veneer and mediocre, cold, overpriced food, and crappy service, then look no further than Mare Sol in Lagrange. Order: App: Spinach Dip with Chips Wife: Lobster Ravioli and Chardonnay Me: Steak Frites and Evil Twin Brewing Belgian Positive up front: The beer was good. No complaints about her Chardonnay. ‍ Now for the rest of the story; Signs that your spinach dip is microwaved (even when your server claims they don't have a microwave), the dish is hot, the outer edges are hot, the center is cold and the "melted" cheese topping comes off in one cold gelatinous clump. At least it had a good flavor and the warmed up Tostitos with extra salt was a nice touch. Lobster ravioli. Wife claims it is Chef Boyardee from a can. I tried one; bland flavoring, puréed imitation crab meat with a dash of tomato sauce. Luke warm. Which is amazing because the girl that served it told the wife that the plate was HOT after she had already put it in her hands. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Steak (medium rare) frites. (Steak sliced and covered in hollandaise sauce with seasoned french fries) At least they got the medium rare part right. Nice seasoning. Would have been a lot better if it was at an edible temperature and not the room temperature that it was served at. After requesting that they "pop it back in the microwave for a few more minutes", it still came back at a balmy 63° (I'm guesstimating). Their blast chiller must be on the fritz. Let's not forget the "service"... The girl never introduced herself. I'm terrible remembering names, but the wife says she didn't. We've both spent time in the service industry, we both know that after you serve your customers, you check back within 3-5 minutes, not 10, to find out that the priciest dish on the table is inedible due to it having apparently lingered out in the 49° rain for too long. (Such a waste of a decent steak) After sending my steak back for the second time, she either got the hint or just didn't want to deal with us anymore and brought the check, minus the cold food. $63+ for mediocre food and piss poor service. Overall, I've decided that I never want to waste money on a mediocre meal again. I'll put that money towards quality meat and charcoal for my grill. At least then I'll know that the food is properly seasoned, cooked and served at a temperature that doesn't remind me of this winter. read more

The blackened chicken Alfredo was very bland and the sauce has separated from its grease making it very pasty and greasy with no flavor. Jumbo, tender, and the tempura perfect. I order two of the Bang Bang Shrimp tonight and the shrimp were small, greasy and the tempura dark. Clearly NOT the same shrimp but the same price. Comfortable little gastopub in downtown Lagrange. They have a lot of different menu offerings that could satisfy any tastes with constantly evolving daily specials. Parking is street parking and sometimes can be a challenge. I was not very hungry when I arrived for dinner and went with a lighter option, their chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad was fresh and tasty, the bread was an egg bun that was lightly toasted on the grill. I got a side of fries with it. Not really into their fries as they were small potato wedges that were deeply fried containing very little potato and really more like a potato chip. Have a nice draft beer offering with many local brews and they are reasonably priced. You can also order flights or 5 ounce tasters for two bucks. read more

I have eaten at this establishment several times over the years. What it lacks is consistently. It is a hit or miss regarding the quality of the food. It seems to be related to whatever chef is directing. The menus have changed several times. Rather than taking the best selling menu items, eliminating the least selling items, and growing the menu, they redo the menu with each chef. They seem to reinvent with each chef rather than grow upon the prior chef. I am kinda a healthy consumer. When this restaurant first opened, they served a grilled vegetable entree that was spot on. They had a wonderful Mediterranean salmon dish that I enjoyed. The menu has changed a few times, and not for the better. The service has always been spotty, but one cannot assume it is the fault of the servers because it could be related to the back of the house mismanagement or lack of labor force. Pretty good recommendation. The service was kinda slow, especially for the lack of customers inside. Salmon Dip appetizer was really good, tasty and had huge chunks of salmon. If you like crab or trout dip then you'll definitely like this. It also comes with garnishments to add on top and a crispy, flaky cracker. Waitress recommended the steak sandwich and said it was "to die for." However, it lacked flavor and the steak was very chewy. Avoid the steak sandwich!! The seafood pasta was amazing!
