WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE???
I am definitely not a "reviewer", especially a negative one, however this needs to be expressed. Mare used to be one of our favorite spots when in Boston, we always brought family and friends with us, as we did last night, only this time we had a horrible experience. From the moment we walked in we were struck by the fact that none of the familiar faces that used to welcome us before were there so the place already felt very cold and uninviting. Granted we were seated on time on their outside patio. From that moment on everything went downhill. We had to beg the server to approach us, it took him 15 min to acknowledge us at all. Once he finally did, without any apology asked us "Good Evening, any drinks tonight". I do understand that servers often get busy especially on weekends, but really??? We had to make sure to check their logo to make sure we were in the right place, I mean Mare used to have one of the best service standards we have ever experienced. We were not going to let this ruin our night however, maybe the server just had an off night, it happens to the best of us, right??? But no, it just kept getting worse. Brought us the wrong wine twice, granted it was a $300 bottle of wine and he said that he usually does not sell those wines. The third time was the charm, we got the right wine and placed our order hoping that the food will make us forget the rest. It did not happen. Besides the oysters which were great, everything else was subpar. The Grigliata di Pesce was literally inedible, so bitter and dry that I had to spit it out. It used to be mouth watering, juicy and fresh. Now mind this used to be our favorite dish. The 2.5 pound stuffed lobster was probably a baby since it weighed less than a pound and the stuffing was 80% bread and 20% mushy seafood. At this point I was wondering if the management or ownership was purposely trying to destroy this place ???
We did not really see our server, so we did ask a very pleasant assistant server I guess to clean our table, so maybe that was a hint that we were ready to leave. At that point he did come and presented us with their dessert menus, nothing about how our dinner was. We thanked him and asked for the check. While we were finishing our wine, we noticed some commotion at the table next to us, only to realize that there was a mouse under their table. We were horrified, I mean you can only imagine what their kitchen must look like. We had to ask for the manager at that point, but unfortunately she was busy drinking wine at the bar, maybe 10:00 was the end of her shift. What a shame.
Never Again. R.I.P Mare. read more
