Fried Calamari: Perfectly fried and the marinara sauce was delicious. Burrata with Truffle Oil: Decent burrata! The char on the crostini was too strong and had a bitter flavor, but the tomato, balsamic, and cheese were delicious. Fettuccine Alfredo + Chicken: Yum! Decedent and delicious Alfredo sauce. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. I added chicken to my pasta to get some protein. The chicken was blackened and I thought the char was too strong on the chicken (but maybe this is just my preference since I felt the same way about the crostini). I look forward to going back to check out their lunch menu and/or half price bottles of wine on Mondays!

We had a great eating experience overall at Mulino. There were 12 of us but because when we called…read morethey continually hung up the phone or the call would end (on a land line). We weren't able to make the reservation for 12 because it only goes up to 10 on OpenTable. We ended up having to make the reservation for 6 at one table and 6 at the other table. To tease us, they put the tables right across from each other and put a table of 2 right in between us. To make matters worse is that we were celebrating our wedding so it would've been nice to have us all together. The restaurant gave me and my husband champagne to try to comp this I suppose but would've been better if they could've seated us all together. We started with the crab cakes and arancini. The crab cakes were fine. The otter crust was crunchy and perfect. The arancini was stuffed with cheese, rice, and meat and it was delicious. They were also crunchy on the outside but so soft and good on the inside. I had the tagliatelle. The noodles were prepared perfectly. It was almost as if I was in Italy. Something I noticed in Italy was that the noodles were never cooked too softly. They were still more firm but edible and delicious and that's how they were prepared at this restaurant in Raleigh. The dish was excellent and very tasty. My husband had the medium rare Ribeye with peppercorn sauce over mashed potatoes with sautéed seasonal vegetables. This dish was prepared perfectly. The ribeye was delicious and mashed potatoes had a great consistency about it and seasoned well.

I adore the bar top design. After my date arrived and a few drinks later, we decided to sit outside for dinner at a table. It was a chilly night, so they had heaters facing the tables, and the outside matched the loveliness of the inside. I had the lasagna, which had that delicious classic Italian taste. The meal, cocktails, and wine were all perfect; my only gripe was the customer service. I felt like we were being rushed out, especially when the server interrupted us to ask if we were done.

Butter chicken was very scrumptious though my son was not so hot about the arugula side. Eggplant parm was really good - the smoked mozzarella really made it luscious. We also tried pork chop and it was not bad should probably try the flank steak instead. I had chocolate cannoli- the cream was rich but not overly sweet - very nice. Tiramisu was also more flavor than sweet which is what we love. Waiter was very attentive and helpful in suggesting dishes. Overall - if I don't count the mishap on seating - it was a good experience.

But... too many misses in too many areas. They belong in the Guide, but I don't think they're near a star. Some specifics: 1) The red snapper crudo is a mess. It's a delicate fish that needs a lot of room and light treatment to shine. Here it's doused in so much acid - tomatoes, peppers, vinegar - that if you closed your eyes, you wouldn't guess snapper in a million years. 2) The gem lettuces are... a Caesar salad. A pretty good Caesar, but there's just nothing notable. Little or no anchovy bite or citrus to balance the heavy hand of the dressing. 3) The service is hurried. I ordered 3 courses and was less than 50 min from sitting down to check. I appreciate a snappy kitchen, but this felt rushed. (On a side note... I sent back a cider that I hadn't realized was going to be so cloyingly sweet. Not a big deal - my risk when I ordered it - but it would've been a nice touch to take it off the bill given that I didn't touch it and ordered a much more expensive glass of wine in its place. It's little moves that shape a diner's overall experience.) It's a beautiful spot and a nice Mediterranean meal, but I wouldn't rate it among (for example) the dozen or so 1-stars in the DC area. Fiola (Italian) is a useful comparison. Several flourishes in the cooking and a higher level of service that make it star-worthy in its class.

The less then stellar: the place smelled like it had been washed with a dirty mop. Having worked in food service before, I know this smell and it was incredibly off putting. My friend and I shared the nachos with short rib and I think they forgot to put on the short rib because it didn't seem to be there. The nachos themselves felt cold and congealed and seemed like they'd been sitting around for a long time (and they came out super quick). We also each got a side of watermelon, which was tasty but felt a little small for the price, and stingy with the fresh mint. The ambiance was beautiful but I probably wouldn't rush back to this location based on the smell and the food.

For drinks I ordered the Long Island Iced tea (vodka, rum, tequila, gin, triple sec, sour mix, and a splash of cola) and my partner ordered the Appletini (vodka, sour apple pucker, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup). Both drinks were excellent and were nice and smooth. For our entree we split the Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti.
