My issue with Marché is it can be good, but it is too hit and miss in my opinion, and they charge too much to lack consistency. We've eaten at Marché probably about 6 times. Sometimes we've been happy with the experience. But this time, we got a reservation because we were too late to get one on Valentine's day, and they still stuck us at a small uncomfortable table at a window instead of a booth. Had they only told us that for a reservation days in advance they'd still cram us onto small uncomfortable chairs at a small table by the kitchen, we'd have tried to schedule for another day and said we want a booth or we'll find another restaurant.
We paid $168 (tip included) for 3 glasses of mediocre red wine and underwhelming food. The beet soup with blue cheese was not terrible, but too bland for what the ingredients implied. Not enough blue cheese flavor to make it interesting, at all. It was more like a basically flavorless cheese as thickener. It needed salt and wasn't any more exciting than just an ordinary soup anywhere. It was colorful though, and unique, to say the least, and sounded like it should be good, so it had that going for it.
Most of the more interesting main course options looked to be in the hooved animal foods, which we don't eat. Choices for fish didn't include salmon, which is usually a classic foolproof fallback item. There was trout, which might have been good. And also cod with a *vinaigrette* (the most expensive item). I thought the trout sounded better, but waiter said he thought the cod was really something, so switched my order from trout to cod, and now I'll never know.
Cod with vinaigrette? Are you kidding me? Who the hell signed off on that??? It was as bad as it sounds. Vinegar is good on cod when it's malt vinegar on fish & chips, but a bland vinegar sauteed topping including onion and other material dumped over a substantial piece of soft nicely textured, well-cooked but otherwise completely insipid piece of cod is the most inane thing I've ever eaten at an expensive restaurant. And for that they wanted $29. They also over-hyped what turned out to be a rather lackluster $14 black truffle to shave over it.
The desert (baked Alaska) was quite good, but overall the dinner was mediocre at best, improved somewhat with more salt than should have been needed on two of the items. There was no wow factor. Nothing to rave about. I just can't believe I spent a whopping $168 for a dinner that was a disappointment, when a local food cart could have given me something vastly tastier and better conceived, for a small fraction of the price. The ambience and uncomfortable table sure didn't offset the meal cost-wise.
Marche's brunch was very enjoyable, the other week, so I will probably go for some more brunches, but maybe 1/3 of the dinner menu choices I've had there have been too underwhelming for the price so I'm finished taking chances. I'm not going to gamble on expensive dinners there anymore. I feel they've gotten too big for their britches and don't take their commitment seriously enough. Last special occasion dinner at that place for me. If you love oysters or red meat, maybe Marché is your place, I don't know but after getting sick from bad oysters in the Bay Area many years ago I won't risk them anymore. Marché makes a good hot buttered rum. But I'm just saying that for $168 for a dinner for two in Eugene, I expect some pretty robust and impressive options, red meat or not and I can't give a restaurant that expensive too many chances or much forgiveness for having a bad night.
