The gentleman who owns it bills himself as grouchy and surly, but we weren't fooled. He's clearly passionate about his business, his cat, and his coffee, including commissioning his own personal blend from a local roaster. Our lattes were smooth and delicious (almond and oat milk). Although pricing is pretty reasonable, especially for the Keys, I do wish they didn't charge extra for plant based milks. WIFI is available with a $5 purchase, and there is a variety of books to browse and/or buy while enjoying a coffee or pastry.

About halfway through our meal the owner? manager? started screaming at a table of customers. She said they had been disrespectful to her the day before and again that day, so she demanded they leave and told them their food was on the house. It was Waffle House level of drama, which we didn't expect from sleepy Marathon, FL. The rest of the employees didn't seem phased, so maybe this isn't a rare occurrence? The seagulls were especially aggressive. Some crafty person strung fishing line across the openings, but it is spaced far too wide and gave the birds no trouble at all. It needs a re-think.

I had already loaded my plate when I discovered the made to order omelette station. Luckily the scrambled eggs were pretty good so I didn't bother with the omelette. In comparison to other hotel breakfast buffets the food was slightly better than average. Service was great and my waiter immediately greeted me with coffee and orange juice. Loved the generous glass of orange juice, but the coffee wasn't great. If you are staying at Hawk's Cay Resort this breakfast buffet is slightly cheaper than ordering room service at the hotel, but I would skip dining here if you have the option to cook your own breakfast in your villa.
