Malasadas: 2 cinnamon sugar and 1plain
    Keith H.

The Malasadas were delicious. This is only my second time eating them. These were different than the ones we had in Oahu. Here they were slightly more crispy on the outside but the soft fluffy insides tasted the same. I was hoping to pair my Malasada with a hot cup of Kona coffee but alas they dod not have any (not their fault, I guess since they are located in Hilo and not Kona). My wife chose to pair hers with a an iced vanilla latte but she said unfortunately it was a swing and a miss. One thing to note, when I read about this place on visitors guides and online nobody mentioned it was just a little food truck on a street corner in Hilo. I was looking for a local shoppe or a store front so we almost missed it. Hopefully the pictures I posted will help with that. If I was in Hilo I would come here again but mainly for the Malasadas.

    Powdered sugar-which we didn't order

We stopped here after driving by it on the way to Kawamoto's. I did look it up on Yelp but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. This place is sort of set up like a drive-through, but it's kinda not. There was only one person working when we got there. We had to wait quite a while for her to take our order after she finished the car in front of us. We ordered 6 malasadas. 3 cinnamon sugars, 2 sugars, and 1li hing. We waited for awhile while the employee made our malasadas which was fine. We got our order and drove off. When the malasadas were passed out, we had 1 sugars, 3 powdered sugar and 2 li hings . So, basically we didn't get close to what we wanted. We made the best of it and started to eat the warm malasadas. Everyone agreed that they were not even good. Too doughy and greasier than the usual malasadas. So disappointing.

Tasted like watered down creamer with some coffee, not to happy with my drink.

The customer service was awesome. The food wasn't very exciting versus the pictures and the hype i was advised. I also ordered a Dubai Chocolate Malasada $7 and I didnt get it in my order. I contacted and text Manuela Malasada if I could grab it another day when in the area they said yes I could, mahalo! The kulolo ice cream was ono and refreshing, i would totally go back to get that for sure I wasn't happy with any of my Malasadas, ill just stick to the plain ones next time. Mahalo for providing awesome service.

    SO DRY!

If I could give 0 stars I would! $30 for a box of burnt dough, with such dry inside. These malasadas are TERRIBLE! TURN YOUR FRYER DOWN & CHANGE YOUR OIL!!! What person would box this up and give these to someone? They should've been remade .. come on!!! How embarrassing.

I wanted to try this place after driving past it every week. I also love to support small local businesses when I can. I was thinking I could get an iced coffee and malasadas. Great combination, right? The malasadas are really pricey for what you could get at Tex's or KTA. We ended up getting a dozen because it was cheaper. It was $22 for the dozen but we got eight filled (2 each of 4 flavors) and four plain sugar-coated malasadas. The malasadas look nothing like the pictures! The filling was an extra $1.25 per malasada. It was that or three for $12. I wanted the poi malasada's but they didn't have it today. I paid $34.58 total. We were told we would have a 8 to 10 minute wait however we waited for at least 20 minutes. After waiting so long, was it worth it? These are probably the most unauthentic malasadas we've ever eaten. They were very doughy, dry, and dense, unlike the traditional light and airy dough. There was no fluff to them. Not spongy and it did not bounce back after each bite. They were cut in half and filled with maybe a teaspoon of filling in each filled one. It was not worth $1.25 as there was nothing special about the taste of them. The malasadas tasted borderline burnt and it felt like eating toasted day old biscuit. I wanted to like these, to brag about the yummy malasadas I got to eat, and hoped it matched the price, but I couldn't eat anymore after drying a quarter of each filled malasada. Maybe if you've never had one you would like it, but my family and I did not care for it at all. If you're local to Hawai'i, IYKYK. The lady that made them was really nice and I feel bad that we did not like them. And I'm sorry that I can't recommend these malasadas to my friends or family. I would feel bad if they paid the price for these. Another thing that was awkward was how the food truck is situated on the property. It's like a drive-through. The food truck is parked in the center of the property and you need to drive around the truck to the window. Because we had to wait long for our malasadas, we wanted to find a place to park so other people that drove through could place their order. We decided to drive back around and wait towards the back of the lot to make room for other people. It's a one way in and one way out, however we had to exit through the entrance because as people drove in, there wasn't enough room to go around them on the right to exit. With so many other and bake stands and dessert and coffee trucks, I think there needs to be some modifications in the dough and end result malasada. And change the layout of the parking lot to make this a go-to place. If not, I don't think people will want to pay $5 for a malasada and $8 for a simple cold brew coffee.

The best there is. When it's made fresh, the malasada is a whole next level experience. Highly recommended.

The quality could be better and the service could improve. For their price point there are better options in Hilo

Ordered a single latte. They took 20 minutes and got the order wrong (gave me black coffee) and only filled the cup halfway.

The shop keeper was friendly and patient as I browsed the pastry case. I've always been curious about the Dubai chocolate bar, so I decided to splurge and give it a try. Very pricey at $16 for a 4-5" bar, but it was worth it to try it once. The chocolate was smooth and high quality, the pistachio cream was sweet with a hint of pistachio flavor, and the kataifi was pleasantly crunchy. I would have loved more pistachio flavor, but it was a nice little chocolate treat. Looking forward to trying more things from Short n Sweet in the future. Will definitely be back when I want to treat myself to a gourmet dessert. :)

We come here every time we visit and try to get something different but we always seem to revert back to the creme brulee. The staff there has always been really nice. We seem to always get the same lady every time we go and I feel terrible that I haven't gotten her name by now

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite!

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.

Traveling with family for a cousin's funeral in Hilo…read more After landing at the airport and picking up the rental car, our first stop was to Hilo Lunch Shop- an okazuya. Just about a block north of the airport complex on Kalanikoa Street, there was a good amount of parking on a Saturday. HLS is hugely popular, usually the line snakes out of the building on work days. Today the line still stretched out in a lazy C to the second door into the shop. Shuffling through the line, I had a lot of time to check out the food. Struck by how reasonable the prices were. Got up to the head of the line and ordered. Paid and went outside to enjoy my food. Saw that the reason for good prices is that some of the portions like the spam musubi were for a half a musubi. But my eyes were bigger than my opu, and I had a lot to take as leftovers anyway. HLS's food is tasty and reasonable. How great is it to see another old-time okayzuya continue to survive! Will repeat whenever my travels bring me back to Hilo, and highly recommend!
