Stumbled upon this snack shack whilst waiting for a table at Hawaiian Style Cafe in the plaza. This shack is filled with plenty of local snacks such as crack seeds (preserved fruits), local grinds, shaved iced and drinks. I was initially lured in by their lemon peel gummy bears, which apparently they're famous or well know for. Lemon peel strips? Li hing powder? Gummy bears? Oh yeeah I'm hella down for all those ingredients. The gummies were located right at entrance and I grabbed two little tubs. I browsed around to see what else caught my eye; ended up picking up some lilikoi flavored macadamia nuts for my friend. The nuts were $12 and the gummy tubs was $7 each, which was a lot for a small tub, but I didn't know where else I could find lemon peel gummies conveniently. I didn't crack open the tub until I returned back home from my trip. The gummies didn't look wet, which is what I prefer. I don't like candy that gets your fingers sticky. I looked up diys on how people make these and most are on the wet side due to the sugary lemon juice. Lani's gummies had chopped up pieces of lemon peel and the li hing powder was ever so lightly coated on the gummies. First bite was a flavor rush. Slight tang, sweet and chewy and a hint of salty. Yo, it is delishness. 10/10 nom nom's. You need self control to prevent from finishing the whole tub in one sitting. I ate the bears in small increments to savor them. Once there were a few gummies leftover I decided to add other gummies I had on hand (Black forest gummies). I added them in the tub and shook them up to get the remaining lemon peel and li hing and they stuck to the newer gummies. Life hack right there, y'all! The lilikoi macadamia nuts were good as well. It had a hint of lilikoi and they were reasonably priced. FYI, at Kona airport they were $18! If you're in the area, and you love gummies, definitely pick up at least one of the lemon peel bears. It is so good and worth the splurge. My tastebuds thanked me for getting them lol read more

Says this is the original place that made this addicting combination. I finally got to go to this little store in Hilo. Very small store with a variety of other treats. Crack seed and flavored popcorn, candies, and ice cream. I was there for 1 thing and 1 thing only, my gummy bears with lemon peel. They have the best tasting reheated food straight out of their microwave. Not kidding around here I always gladly pay for their reheated straight from their microwave food any day. It's that tasty. Sounds nuts but it is what it is because I always see them putting my food in their microwave after I place my order. Other restaurants especially the Chinese ones should really pay attention on how to do this right. I would frequent there more often if they were open every day with longer hours. Wish I could give this place 0 stars. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic. I was stopping by to see if they had any sugar free snacks. When I entered I was greeted by an employee who was kind and my wife told her I was looking for sugar free snacks. Another worker near the back said very loudly "We don't have any sugar free snacks! THIS IS A SNACK SHOP!!!" To which I replied and explained I was a diabetic and was just looking around for sugar free foods. I'm completely fine with them not having sugar free food - that's not the problem. The issue is the attitude the employee gave me. I just read through some of the previous reviews and it looks like other customers have got attitude from the employees as well. Sounds like a reoccurring issue. Love this cute little local snack shop and seed store! Brings back memories of the old seed stores my mom would take me and my sisters to back in the day, where you could buy seed from the jar by the pound. They have a wide selection of tasty seeds! I bought their dry lemon peel, rock salt plum, and wet li hing mui. They also sell other local goodies and shaved ice and ice cream. We met the owner Lani and her daughter and they were so friendly! We just came back from 10 days on Oahu & 7 days on the Big Island. I was looking for cracked seed everywhere we went. Bought some on Oahu at Wholesale unlimited that was junk. I tossed them. Then went to Marukai, bought some there that was just ok. I didn't go into chinatown because of the traffic. On the Big Island I 1st tried 5 Spice in Hilo. Much better, but imported from China. Then was out in Kona & stopped by Doris Place. Met Auntie Doris, she's so nice & her cracked seed was good too, but imported from China. Then I found Lani's Snack Shop in Hilo. OMG, this is the place. Lani gets her fruit from a local boy who moved to California to grow fruit. It's shipped to Honolulu where it's processed into crack seed. This is the REAL DEAL!!!!! Plenty of meat on the seeds, seasoned just right, just plain ONO. To top it off, Lani is a sweetheart. We talked story for a bit & she gave us samples of Snow Plum, Peach, & Lemon. All were perfect. I bought a pound of Sweet Le Hing Mui cracked seed & a pound of peach. If you want authentic cracked seed on the Big Island, Lani's is the place to go. Best place for quick lunch and easy on the Dining Out budget. Always have Laulau Bowl, specials of Pastele Stew or Patele Plate are soooo very good. Had the shoyu chicken today and that was tasty and you get two big pieces of very flavorful chicken, good mac salad and rice. Fast service, and I hesitate to let others know about this place (especially those waiting outside next door) because this is one of those IFYKYK kind of secret special places you want to keep to yourself. But gotta share cause you just love the people that work there. And if you really want to get recommendations on what to order, ask the hui of four that are there every day at lunch time. read more

By far the worst service, came to get a sandwich and I couldn't ask what they put in the sandwiches without the first at the window copping an attitude like it bother her, she closed the window and came back and charged me, she then said it here was a processing charge for .50, I asked that they cancel the order and she proceeded to force me to pay for the meal I didn't even agree for her to make, she should put a sign up beforehand and take payment before she starts making anything. We went to Hawaii one month ago, after one month I am still raving about how good the shaved ice was. My partner and I wanted to experience Shaved Ice on the island and came here first. The employee working at the time was very kind and friendly and helped us pick out flavors we'd both like. Shaved Ice is the most awesome thing in the world and this location does a wonderful job at it! Lani's deserves an All Star Badge or something! They set the par for Shaved Ice for me. My go to for the islands favorite crack seeds. My favorite being li hung mui. However, when get pickled peach or apricot, I can't resist.

I was recommended this snack shop by a dear friend. Needed to purchase holiday Omiyagi for family living far away. On arrival they were quite busy and let only a few people in at a time. Clerk also asked if you were purchasing in store items before letting you in and she asked that you hand sanitized upon entering. No problem. By the way they do have an open side window that you can "order to go" on any items you may need. And they have two small tables outside if you want to sit and eat! Convenient! Another store clerk inside answered my questions about seed snacks and offered suggestions. Wonderful! I think that you can also pre-order gift baskets you would need to call. For a small business they have quite an array of local items. I heard that their burgers are pretty good too. I had been looking for crack seed earlier but my old fav store was gone and Lani's had options...lots of options, some of which I had not seen before now. I approached the counter with questions which were answered by samples to try. Very cool!!!...so questions answered I left w/ Jabong Peel & sweet Li Hing Mui and now I'm sitting here back home in CA wishing I had scored on larger amounts. There are tons of options for snacks out there but when it comes to locally sourced & natural options "crack seed" has my vote every time. After having grown up on Big Island Ice Shave, I can say that Lani's ranks up there with them all, if not the best. It's currently the finest and softest powder you'll find in any ice shave here, locally. All the common favorite flavors of syrup are offered and the price is right. Lani and her family have really accommodated me and my family, including my two little messy ones, every time we go there. The service is dealt with a touch of 'Aloha.' Aside from the ono ice shave, Lani also offers Dave's brand ice cream. My favorites are the Hawaiian Mud Pie and the Ulu ice cream. There's also a whole bunch of locally made snacks such as chips, candies, and choke (plenty) crack seed. Good location for visitors to pick up omiyage on the way to the airport. My only suggestion would be for the place to have a little more seating accommodations outside of their store. They only had one table and two chairs. Maybe several more benches or another table with more chairs would benefit bigger crowds and/or families. read more
