I ordered a keiki with lilikoi and coconut and was underwhelmed by the shave ice. The shave ice grain was similar to mainland snow cones and the flavors were overly saccharine. The proportions are large and served in a small paper cones and there is no spots to sit in and enjoy. read more

Wilson's by the bay was right outside of a restaurant where we ate lunch. The lady who helped us was very friendly, the orders came out pretty quick & the sizes were decent for the price we paid. I ordered the keiki (small) Lilikoi and pineapple shave ice. The flavor and texture of the ice were okay. I'm very particular about the way the ice melts into my mouth and this one didn't quite cut it. If I were in the area again and it was within walking distance, I would swing by again to try another flavor. read more

I ordered grape, lemon, and lilikoi. The lilikoi is like a passion fruit flavor and it was really good. Probably my favorite. All three were good together. The cup that it was in made it fairly difficult to eat and our little one had a really hard time with it. I tend to like softer ice better, and theirs was a bit hard. Old school kine shaved ice. Huge! Keiki (kid size), is bigger than some regular size ones elsewhere. Pretty cheap too! Lots of syrup (not organic), but plenty kine! Good w/ a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom (only $1)-- do it! Also nice selection of crack seed for cheap. Needs a garbage to throw away after, but nice to have a few benches and visit with the locals and tourists. Met a nice older couple-- 3rd generation Hilo resident. My son thoroughly enjoyed his shaved ice, there was a line when we got here and only one person working. It is a very small establishment - almost like a drive through window. Nothing hits better on a hot day than a nice big shave ice (or as they say here, ice shave - sorry I'm from Oahu). Most of our crew ordered the regular size and couldn't finish it. Having grown up in Hilo, I know where to find this little shop, but for visitors from the Mainland, please take the time to find it. It's only a block from the farmer's market, and has been serving top notch shaved ice for years. All the local, tropical flavors are available (lilikoi, li hing mui) as well as the standards. Plus, the islands have little bonuses you won't find elsewhere like condensed milk on top, sweet azuki beans or a scoop of ice cream in the middle. So many delicious and exotic choices, you'll have to come back to Hilo again to try another one! read more

While on the big island, I had to get some ice shave. This is the same thing as shave ice, which is that the syrup flavored grated ice is called on all the other Hawaiian islands or snow cones, which is what mainland people call this local treat.... ice shave... haha! On Oahu, shave ice can cost $4-$10 depending on where you get it. On the big island, apparently it's normal for shave ice to cost $2!! TWO. Ok, well my shave ice ended up costing $4. No tax, just straight up $4 because I got a regular size (which is huge) and topped it with cream. Still, the $2 Keiki size is generous and there are 10 or so great flavors to choose from. The ice quality is great, not exactly as soft as wailoa, but it was fine with me:) no complaints. They even have a nice bench outside, perfect to take selfies on next to their window sign. In addition to shave ice, I mean "ice shave", they also sell a few lihing seeds and t shirts. The service was friendly, it is centrally located in downtown Hilo near the farmers market and there is lots of parking. Definitely a must-stop! read more

Oh my gosh!!! I absolutely love this place for so many reasons!! First of all, the service was AMAZING!! I didn't catch her name, but I believe she's the owner; she was so patient, kind, and caring with her customers. Before helping me and my husband, she helped an older woman, and even helped her walk her shaved ice to her car! Who does that nowadays! Guys, and she did this with the sweetest smile! I can't help but talk kindly of her because she definitely left an impression on us! Second, the shaved ice was delicious! We got a large with ice cream! Definitely refreshing on a humid day in Hilo. I thought the service was very good but the shaved ice tasted very fake. We bought four different shaved ices with multiple flavors and all of them tasted artificial. We were the last customers of the day so perhaps that had something to do with it but overall I can't recommend this shop based on our experience. read more

I really wanted to try this place, I did. But online they listed as open from 10am to 9pm every day, and this is incredibly far from the truth. Turns out they are only open from "around lunchtime to 5pm" so be aware. Found street parking down the block. It's a small place that's painted green on the outside. No seating inside but two long benches outside. The lady is super sweet and friendly. Regular size was huge (almost as big as Oahu's Shimazu shave ice portions) and $5. I paid $1 more for cream (aka condensed milk). Limited flavors but enough options. They gave A LOT of syrup. For my rainbow shave ice, I had a choice of banana (typical fare) or pineapple. The pineapple syrup was nice and tart. At shave ice places, the ice texture is key. This one is really fine, no crunchiness as you eat it. It also didn't melt too fast, even during this hot summer season eating it outside. Even at the bottom of my cone, it was still ice and not liquid. For some reason, the syrup colors didn't mix at the bottom. It was like slurping up a unicorn! Been back in Hilo since my university closed in March and recently saw a friend post a huge ice shave from Wilson's on Instagram. Wilson's has been my favorite ice shave spot since they were down by Palace and I was a kid taking ballet lessons. A great place to stop by if you're walking around Hilo. Parking's not always easy to find but there's parking lots a short walk away. Never too sweet and there's never a point when it's "just bare ice". A huge portion for $4! Wilson's is one of the few remaining ice shave places in Hilo that's bee around for a while. First Kawate's closed and then Itsu's. Wilson's has cheap ice shave (that how we say it in Hilo) and crack seed assortment. Conveniently located in downtown Hilo on Mamo St, Wilson's has a good assortment of flavors and always good service. I tend to opt for local flavors like coconut, lilikoi, li hing mui, and lychee, but there are the more typical flavors like strawberry and vanilla too. A keiki size is only $2, and it's actually pretty big. I've never really needed bigger than a keiki size. Options for regular or with ice cream available too. A few crack seed options are available for purchase by the bag, and tshirts are sold too. No space to sit or hangout inside, so take your ice shave outside to stand or sit on the bench. read more

I stopped here after grabbing a bite to eat in downtown Hilo. This is a small hole in the wall place that serves shaved ice and a few other things. Their shaved ice starts at $4, less if it's kid-sized. I got the Wilson's works, $6 for a large amount of shaved ice with great flavors. Enough for two people to share or one person to go into a sugar coma. Parking was free and plentiful nearby. There isn't much seating, but best to grab the shaved ice and walk a couple of blocks to enjoy it by the beach. I will be coming back next time I'm in Hilo. read more

Love this place! Old fashioned ice shave, that takes one back to small kid time memories and you can't forget all their homemade syrups. My 'ohana loves this place too - some of our favs are the li hing mui, sour apple, & lychee and can't forget the cream on the top, mmm...yum. The service is always friendly, the portion size are spot on and it always brings me back to the best days after spending the entire day at the soccer field and then walking over to the shop to pick up this refreshing treat. The cone cup, mini straw and wooden spoon is classic, expected and the way ice shave in Hilo is supposed to be. The family who runs this store was in good spirits, knew the area well, and were more than willing to accommodate special requests. Just not impressed. This new listing wasn't up when we went to Hawaii, so we walked around forEVER trying to find this store. The line didn't look that long, but it took quite awhile before it was our turn. There was only one girl working [I don't know if this is normal?], and she seemed a little overwhelmed. I liked the lilikoi flavor, but we had ice cream as well, and the ice cream dripped through the paper cone like no other. The more you know, I guess... Anyway, the consistency is pretty fluffy, but not as fluffy as I was hoping... and it got really dense really quickly. For the price it's decent. Not amazing. Just decent. My friends and I stopped by after a long and hot day at the beach. There was only one girl working and about four people in front of us in line. It took a while for us to put in our order. A little too long for me. One of my friends wanted a keiki sized cup with ice cream. Their policy is that any shaved ice with ice cream costs $4, even if the keiki is normally $1.50. She got it, she said it tasted like they use Meadow Gold, she wasn't impressed. Me? I opted for the keiki with half vanilla, half li hing mui. The flavor wasn't great. Their syrup isn't the best and the texture of the ice isn't that soft. I would go back for sure. Just go in understanding you're not getting the best shaved ice. read more
