    Mok-A-Sauras
    Cynthia T.

Decided to check out this highly recommended place. Luckily the wait was not too long and we were seated soon after we added our names to the waitlist. Ordered the unsweetened iced tea and their special coffee which were pretty good, nothing super fancy. Hubby got the steak and eggs and I really wanted a loco moco but for a dollar more you get the Mok-A-Saurus plate with a little bit of everything - chicken katsu, spam, and kalua pork in addition to your beef patty, fried rice, eggs and gravy. We really should have shared - the portions are ginormous! The restaurant is at the end of the building, diner/cafe vibe with lots of tables and the ability to seat larger groups. I'm sure it gets super busy on weekends given the generous portions of homestyle food.

    Deluxe Fried Saimin

Was at the Airport visitor center and I asked where I could get a good plate lunch type of meal and the lovely gal recommended this place. My nephew and I shared the deluxe saimin that came with mini fried wontons, Korean chicken and boneless kalbi. We also shared the Mok-A-Sauras that had a hamburger steak, spam, chicken cutlet, Kalua pig and fried rice with eggs. Our favorite was the deluxe Saimin. Both the Korean chicken and kalbi was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of flavoring. The Mok-A-Saurus was good but the Kalua pig was too salty. The hamburger steak had a great grilled flavoring and the gravy was perfect for everything. The portion of fried rice was a bit small for the size of the plate. Service was great as they had a lot of servers working Definitely would come back again.

The absolute best restaurant food gonna have on this island so far Mega pancakes, full of the richest flavors The mixed bowls were like a protein eaters The service was amazing and the bathrooms were nice and clean

This huge short stack came with my chicken fried steak plate!

Visiting Hilo and my niece suggested this place and it didn't disappoint. I forgot what my son ordered but he devoured that plate quickly. I had the chicken fried steak, eggs over easy and hash browns. I was surprised when my short stack pancake came to the table. It was huge that even with my husband and son sharing it we couldn't finish it after our meals. We like to try a bit of everything and had the waffle too. That was something my son enjoyed the most. The staff was efficient, friendly and food came out quick. Next trip to Hilo, we are coming back here.

    Mento Bento

Came on a weeknight and were seated right away. The vibe is very casual, diner, a little retro. Lots of Hawaiian/Japanese/Korean fusion food options and portions are BIG! Prices are reasonable for the size too ($~20 a plate). Ahi poke nachos really hit the spot-- huge plate and fresh fish. The two entrees came with little sides of kimchi as well that was really good. The meat was all cooked really well-- everything was tender, flavorful, and tasty. The Galbi in the mento bento was excellent and the Korean pork as well! We ended up taking a lot to go because the portions were so big. Had a great experience!

Came on a weekday around 11AM, and man they were super super busy. They offer a Yelp waitlist, so definitely take advantage of it and start joining the waitlist approximately 20-30 minutes before you think you will get there. We didn't know about the Yelp waitlist, so we arrived, joined the waitlist, and had enough time to drive out and get coffee. This place is super busy and popular, and for good reason! Food was delicious, portion sizes are ginormous. Haupia Pancakes (10/10) - as a breakfast spot, we came from the pancakes, and they did not disappoint - 1st off when you get here, take a look at one of the tables and admire the size of these pancakes. They were literally the size of my head, and are so large. They are falling off the sides of the plates - pancakes are super fluffy, stuffed with coconut, and come with a dressing that's light, it packed with coconut flavor *Mok-A-Sauras (9/10) - Loco Mocos are a Hawaiian staple. However, usually it comes with simply rice, eggs, hamburger patty, and maybe spam. The spot instead offers a plate back in addition to the above, also gives you Kalua pork and a fried chicken cutlet. Get all the meats!! - this dish was super satisfying and filling, and each meat was tender and unique in their own ways. It really blended well together perfect dish to share with a big group. *Home Of The Original Kalua Hash And Eggs (7/10) - regarding the hash itself, it felt a little lacking in flavor and a little uninspiring. Maybe this was because all the other items that we ordered were so fantastic that the hash was slightly forgotten about. - as usual, portion sizes are huge, and this can also come with a side of pancakes! Although they are plain pancakes, the pancakes that are provided are the same huge portion as stated above. Super huge and 100% will fill you up if you're looking for a big portion sizes.

Prime rib loco moco (special of the day)

If you're looking for a sit-down breakfast spot, this is definitely worth checking out. We arrived before opening and were surprised to see a line already forming, but once the doors opened, things moved quickly and we were seated without much of a wait. The service really stood out--staff were friendly, attentive, and efficient from the start. Water was brought to the table right away, and they offered additional drink options. I ordered a coffee, which comes with two refills, a nice bonus. We decided to share the prime rib loco moco, and the portion was massive--definitely enough for two. While the size impressed us, the flavor didn't quite match. It was decent, but a bit underwhelming overall and needed some extra salt to bring out the taste. That said, the experience itself was great thanks to the excellent service and generous portions. I'd be open to coming back and trying something different--maybe the next dish will elevate the overall impression.

    Macnut Panko Mahi

Arrived on a Saturday night a little before 5 for dinner and there already was a line. Recommend getting there early to avoid wait times. Service was kind and friendly, offered a variety of specials and seems like a place with lots of great options. Casual atmosphere. We ordered the Macnut Panko Mahi which was delicious, my only change would be more of the sweet chili sauce. We also ordered the mixed plate and found both meals to very filling given the price. Overall, this meal was delicious with great service and great value. Would definitely come back or recommend.

After a long day of traveling, we wanted to try some local Hawaiian favors. I got the Mento Bento (kalbi, chicken cutlet, ahi poke, spam, egg, uzumaki, takuan). Didn't expect the portions to be that large (could easily be shared by 2). I liked the variety of this dish. The kalbi was extremely flavorful: sweet and the umami wasn't too overpowering). A few of the ahi pieces were a bit tough. Service was average but the hostess was really nice making sure we were seated fast and explaining the specials to us.

The food was delicious. My friend recommended this place and the way they cook their meat is sooo flavorful. The service was good we ordered take out because the waitlist was so long and we were hungry. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The parking lot was full but we were able to find parking.

I came here because I saw all the great reviews and this place did not disappoint. I was feeling a bit under the weather and ordered the beef stew which came with a very deeply flavored broth that felt like the broth was simmered or slow cooked for hours to develop the flavor. The beef was really soft and tender too. It came with a side of Mac salad that had tuna and it was delicious. The portions were big so I had leftovers and it still hit the next day when I had it. Highly recommend

    Pancakes

The food is amazing!!! The pancakes ate huge, fluffy and cooked to perfection. The loco moco with fried rice was delicious! It's a cute location and has a welcoming ambiance. We used Yelp to get on the waitlist and when we got there, the host checked us in and seated us promptly. Two helpers came to take our drink orders and they were not mean but they were not friendly or welcoming. Finally the waitress came. She was nice and helpful. We will be back for pancakes for sure...

This place needs to have 5 stars! We stopped by this cafe on our quick trip to Hilo for the Volcano National Park. It is nestled near the town next to the airport, so we grabbed a bit from here and checked out the farmers market nearby before taking the longer drive to the park. The restaurant is unassuming, but honestly, we were pleasantly surprised! We got some classic dishes - the loco loco and luau - but also poke bowl and maca pancake. Honestly, the poke bowl and the macadamia pancake were unbelievably good! The poke bowl was better than any other bowl we tried in Waikiki, and the pancake was huge with a delicious coconut macadamia cream. And in general, the portions were just so huge - pancake could've fed 5 people! Also, service was so quick and the waiters were so kind.

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

The space is airy, and on our visit, decorated for Easter. We were immediately greeted by Paul. The restaurant is staffed by him, and one other employee. The menu is short, and all the better for it. Paul explained the menu and gave us recommendations. I was already interested in the Pasta de Marco, which appears to be a part of a regular menu. Angel hair pasta, lightly fried, tossed with fresh veggies and pesto, and lightly toasted baguette on the side. We also had the tuna, two ways, and papaya salad. Both were perfect, incredibly fresh, all ingredients balanced, beautifully presented. Paul had us end with the Belgium waffle. I've had waffles in Belgium, and these were the best I've had. Crispy, soft, with berries, whip cream, and powdered sugar, it didn't even need the (warm!) syrup. This experience felt like being a guest in the chef's home. Paul treated all customers as a friend, he was funny, relaxed, and personable. I also personally appreciated it is the safest restaurant for me to eat at as he hates bell peppers as much as I do!
