Make a reservation or join the waitlist right from their Yelp page before heading over. There was so much on the menu that I wanted to try, but I ended up getting the Beef Stew. Tender beef and veggies, tasty gravy, and a generous serving that comes with two scoops of rice and your choice of green salad or mac salad. I chose the green salad because I was trying to be healthy. Then I saw their mac salad had tuna in it. Instant regret. Next time, I'm getting the mac salad. They had amazing flavor, amazing choices (like the Salmon Benedict), as servers have mentioned they lost their chef and now just like cooks run the kitchen, but now, the service is highly unpredictable - you could have good service or terrible- and the food quality is also extremely HIGHLY unpredictable! The basic loco moco was good, but then at the same time, the prime rib loco was so bland and unflavored, that it tasted like the meat was cheap frozen meat from Sysco. The atmosphere is nice, with the exception of rude servers that don't want to help find your server if you're not at their table. I wanted to get a coffee refill after 30 minutes, and I was only able to get a refill AFTER the server brought the check. Server was MIA for 30 minutes with no apologies, and I didn't see the place to be more than regular busy. With the prices of everything going up, it's not going to be a place I come back to, becuase I'm going to be choosing where I spend my money next time with care, and it's not going to be here. Sad to say. I gave them 3 chances, and this was the same experience (except the last time when the server emphatically apologized for being short staffed and a new cook as to why the food was way undercooked, and the flavor was extremely bland). Old style/decor restaurant. The front counter staff not too friendly upon entering. The two ladies worker there at the time spoke to us in a rude tone of voice. Visited Hilo for the first time and wanted a good breakfast spot with local flavors. So glad we discovered this place! Portions were humongous! Everything tasted so good. Restaurant had a lot of seating, and the room in the farthest back had good a/c and fans. But be prepared to wait! (Hint: add your name to the Yelp waitlist ahead of time.) This place is a gem! We came on a friday around noon and the wait was about 15-20 mins and we're seated faster than that. The staff were all so very nice and hospitable. The menu was filled with so many choices of sweet and savory. My husband and I chose to share the "Mok a Saurus" because their portion sizes are generous! We also got a size of french toast and a keiki kids meal. Everything was delicious and gone by the end of the meal, the burger patties are perfect seasoned with a taste of char from the fire grill. When we got to the host stand, we waited for the host Jenna to come back from the back of the restaurant. When she approached us, I told her my name and party that she just called and she looked dumbfounded. Like I was speaking an alien language to her. She the told me she gave away our table to a party that she just walked in, then told me that she would be setting another table for my party when one leaves. Another 10 minute wait. When she called our name again, we practically ran to the door so we wouldn't have to go thru that drama again. The whole time she walked us to the table, she was profusely apologizing for the mix up. When our waitress came by, I did let her know I wasn't appreciative of the way the hostess handled the situation. She apologized for the inconvenience and assured me that she would be the only one taking care of us for the rest of the night. Dinner was good, pancakes were on point but as usual way to much to finish. My steak came out cooked perfectly ( thanks keoni ), but was a little underseasoned. Das ok tho cause there's salt n pepper at the table. I just want to say that as a former employee of this establishment, I know how bad that looks for this place, when the hostess who is the first person you meet when you walk into those doors, blantanly makes mistakes, like she did tonight. Even with multiple sorrys, that dosent dispute the fact that you still didn't do your job right and it was at the mercy of the waitress herself and her busser who then took it into their own hands to rectify the situation. Ordered the unsweetened iced tea and their special coffee which were pretty good, nothing super fancy. Hubby got the steak and eggs and I really wanted a loco moco but for a dollar more you get the Mok-A-Saurus plate with a little bit of everything - chicken katsu, spam, and kalua pork in addition to your beef patty, fried rice, eggs and gravy. We really should have shared - the portions are ginormous! The restaurant is at the end of the building, diner/cafe vibe with lots of tables and the ability to seat larger groups. Had a late lunch hour meal with friend here at Hawaiian Style Cafe. Quick turnover of tables. Staff cordial and efficient. The salmon poke bowl my friend ordered was freshly made, nicely seasoned, good portion ratio of poke to rice. I ordered the Korean pork which was served with 2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad. This entree can easily feed 2 sml eaters. The marinated pork was well seasoned and grilled perfectly. My dining companion agreed that it was an excellent entrée. I ordered a coffee, which comes with two refills, a nice bonus. We decided to share the prime rib loco moco, and the portion was massive--definitely enough for two. While there for lunch, they have pictures of their current specials rotating up on a TV. We saw this Haupia pancake, and then actually saw one come out, which someone had ordered. That's when we decided to hit this place again for breakfast on the way out of town. For breakfast, we had one order of the Haupia pancakes, and an order of scrambled eggs. Between the two of us, we could not finish the pancakes. They're massive! Think of a large oval shaped plate that you typically see in all you can eat buffet lines. And the pancakes are actually hanging over the side of that plate. They are also very thick, and covered with a coconut glaze type of covering. They are great! After a long day of traveling, we wanted to try some local Hawaiian favors. I got the Mento Bento (kalbi, chicken cutlet, ahi poke, spam, egg, uzumaki, takuan). This place needs to have 5 stars! We stopped by this cafe on our quick trip to Hilo for the Volcano National Park. It is nestled near the town next to the airport, so we grabbed a bit from here and checked out the farmers market nearby before taking the longer drive to the park.
