Visited Hilo for the first time and wanted a good breakfast spot with local flavors. So glad we discovered this place! Portions were humongous! Everything tasted so good. Restaurant had a lot of seating, and the room in the farthest back had good a/c and fans. But be prepared to wait! (Hint: add your name to the Yelp waitlist ahead of time.) This place is a gem! We came on a friday around noon and the wait was about 15-20 mins and we're seated faster than that. The staff were all so very nice and hospitable. The menu was filled with so many choices of sweet and savory. My husband and I chose to share the "Mok a Saurus" because their portion sizes are generous! We also got a size of french toast and a keiki kids meal. Everything was delicious and gone by the end of the meal, the burger patties are perfect seasoned with a taste of char from the fire grill. Ordered the unsweetened iced tea and their special coffee which were pretty good, nothing super fancy. Hubby got the steak and eggs and I really wanted a loco moco but for a dollar more you get the Mok-A-Saurus plate with a little bit of everything - chicken katsu, spam, and kalua pork in addition to your beef patty, fried rice, eggs and gravy. We really should have shared - the portions are ginormous! The restaurant is at the end of the building, diner/cafe vibe with lots of tables and the ability to seat larger groups. We arrived before opening and were surprised to see a line already forming, but once the doors opened, things moved quickly and we were seated without much of a wait. The service really stood out--staff were friendly, attentive, and efficient from the start. Water was brought to the table right away, and they offered additional drink options. I ordered a coffee, which comes with two refills, a nice bonus. We decided to share the prime rib loco moco, and the portion was massive--definitely enough for two. While the size impressed us, the flavor didn't quite match. It was decent, but a bit underwhelming overall and needed some extra salt to bring out the taste. That said, the experience itself was great thanks to the excellent service and generous portions. Haupia Pancakes (10/10) - as a breakfast spot, we came from the pancakes, and they did not disappoint - 1st off when you get here, take a look at one of the tables and admire the size of these pancakes. They were literally the size of my head, and are so large. They are falling off the sides of the plates - pancakes are super fluffy, stuffed with coconut, and come with a dressing that's light, it packed with coconut flavor *Mok-A-Sauras (9/10) - Loco Mocos are a Hawaiian staple. However, usually it comes with simply rice, eggs, hamburger patty, and maybe spam. The spot instead offers a plate back in addition to the above, also gives you Kalua pork and a fried chicken cutlet. Get all the meats!! - this dish was super satisfying and filling, and each meat was tender and unique in their own ways. It really blended well together perfect dish to share with a big group. *Home Of The Original Kalua Hash And Eggs (7/10) - regarding the hash itself, it felt a little lacking in flavor and a little uninspiring. We were so delighted we found this gem for lunch in Hilo after stopping by the Hilo market. This restaurant is located at the end of a strip mall along with other small businesses. We were greeted by a friendly staff and readily seated in a nice booth. The place is clean, busy, and had a steady stream of customers. Our server was friendly and gave us a genuine and warm aloha welcome, and once seated, left us with enough time to look over their thick menu. We ordered "bigger than your head" pancake with generous strips of bacon, mouth watering loco moco with perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, thick French toasts, to die for milkshake, and a ginormous portion of mento bento! We were stuffed and had more than enough leftovers for another meal! It was delicious, affordable and the portions were huge! The absolute best part of the experience however, was our server Ruth. She is one of those people who goes out of her way to make sure you have absolutely everything you need. This place needs to have 5 stars! We stopped by this cafe on our quick trip to Hilo for the Volcano National Park. It is nestled near the town next to the airport, so we grabbed a bit from here and checked out the farmers market nearby before taking the longer drive to the park. We were ready for some grub but not that hungry but this place was recommended, of course we had to go and thank goodness we weren't hungry because the wait was between 45 minutes to an hour. The menu was one double sided page filled with Loco Mocos and local favorites. I saw Lechon (fried pork belly) as one of the offerings so I had to order that. My partner in crime ordered fried Saimin (wheat noodles) which in opinion is a version of "Pancit" ( Filipino noodle dish). The Lechon came with Mac and cheese and two scoops of steamed rice. The Lechon was fried pork belly sliced with onions and tomatoes on a bed of Patis (fish sauce). The fried Saimin included some fried gyoza, fish cakes and veggies. The portions were good for two at a good price! The ambiance is a sense of family. You can see all types of families, a family of three all the way to a family of six plus at the restaurant.
