The restaurant opened in 2016 in a landmark (built in 1908) building in downtown Hilo. Keeping with the century old charm, this restaurant provides a glimpse of the old world Hilo. A very popular dinner place, reservations are really required and the meals were excellent. (People seem less happy about eating during happy hour). We started out with a strange drink; Lilikoi Martini. But was a pleasant surprise of tasting new things. And the presentation was unique to us adding to the fun. Our entrees were Mochiko Crusted Fresh Catch that was a mahi mahi fish ornately prepared with sweet potatoes from the neighboring island of Molokai. After two weeks of fish meals, I was ready for comfort food; picked the Chicken & Shrimp Angel Hair Pasta. Good portion of shrimp and great simple meal. Finished the evening off with a piece of New York Style Cheesecake; creamy and quite good.

I am quite unsure how to address the bad reviews on here, as I have nothing but great things to say. Our waiter was far...far far, too fast no really he was very fast. Greeting us very fast bringing us drinks very fast answering our questions about the meal as I have food, and very fast to get our order in ... that we did not feel pressured to leave just because everything was fast. I had the chicken and shrimp, pasta dish. In my companion had two hors d'oeuvres ( spring rolls and chowder) as her meal... and the drinks were great too... martini and a Mai Tai.i

Great food, outrageously slow service I enjoyed the food a lot. It's too bad it took them 20 minutes to take our order. After that they were pretty quick. Our server started serving people that got seated way after us, which really bothered me. We ordered the tacos, the mac nut, the pork ribs, and the flat bread. It was all super good. The pictures speak for themselves. Perhaps just the quesadilla was disappointing.

I have to call them as I experience them. I wanted to give I higher rating, but can't. I agree with the other reviewer who frequents fine dining establishments. The ambiance was very good. We stumbled in and found ourselves in the middle of Happy Hour. I was not happy by the time I left. The Lava Flow had to be returned as it was "lacking liquor". The nearly tasteless Lava Flow came back without a hint of rum taste. The strawberry and pina colada taste was not discernible, and the drink was not great. The glass it came in was undersized, which is a theme of the night. I've had better luck in gin mills in Key West. The clam chowder was a decent attempt at the classic recipe. The chowder was thick, the potatoes were soft, and the clams fresh and tender. It could be improved with less oregano and it was otherwise over spiced. I'm sure it also was lacking other flavors. I split a tiny cup that was half full and left half of it there. The crispy ribs were not exceptionally crispy, but were kind of decent. They also were not finished. The hummus and pita was eh. The hummus was thick, chunky and strong - Moroccan v Egyptian or Greek style? We ate the pita and left the hummus. The medium rare burgers came out medium well. The fries were decent, and half were left. The burger on the happy hour menu is identical to the burger on the main menu in description and price. It was a half decent burger, but not close to being memorable. The steak frites were good, properly cooked. The two virgin Lava Flows came out in drastically inappropriate glassware and cost $11. Not cool. My local Pilsner came out in a brandy sifter. Also over priced and underwhelming. I had anticipated coming back tomorrow to sample other happy hour pupus and the rack of lamb but will pass. All in all, it was very underwhelming other than atmosphere. Denny's level fare. The service was inconsistent

Food was good, service was good. The restaurant was really nice. This place is a great place for special occasions and a bit pricey. However, the wait staffs was great she wasn't being too hovering around and was able to get her attentions when needed. Since moving to the big island, I rarely go out to eat since there are not much of restaurants to choose from. Tonight my colleagues and I had a special occasion and my concierge found Jackie Rey's restaurant and I think it a good choice. Will definitely will revisit when opportunities come.

One of my favorite restaurants in Hilo. Food, service & ambience ‍ 10/10 We Love coming here!

Seafood Tower

Celebrated my birthday here over dinner. Place used to be an old bank so the vibe is that of old dark wood and concrete floors & leather seats. Great classic look. We came at the sweet spot of dinner and happy hour. So we took advantage of both. Our server was very helpful and recommended the right dish for me. I ordered the HH crab cake which was okay. Didn't prefer the sweet sauce with the crab. The recommended pork chop however was delicious. The pork was juicy with a thick cut over garlic mash potatoes and spinach. I tasted my husband's very colorful seafood tower which included the crab cake. It was just okay. We both enjoyed our drinks. Kudos to the bartenders!!

Lilikoi Martini & Hawaiian Margarita

Was here for happy hour and was a nice afternoon to escape from the rain. It was recommended by our house host and had to give it a try. The margarita was great, and the lilikoi martini. We also got the quesadilla, crab cake and fish tacos. Little spendy, but glad it was happy hour. Service was great and very chill place to enjoy some local food.

Had to try the Wed special with Opakapaka Whole Fried Fish, warabi (fern) salad, chili pepper water, sides and rice. FIVE Stars!

Seriously. Went for wine tasting and left with laughs from great company and new friends, some delicious wines, and the most amazing Whole Fried Fish, Opakapaka Wed Special (Dec 2025)

We dined here for Thanksgiving this year. The special menu was lights out. I ordered the Lamb chops, my wife ordered the Lobster Tails, and my daughters ordered the Turkey and the NY Strip. We had the Carrot cake for dessert. The wine we ordered was served at cost (no huge retail mark up). Our server was excellent. Jackie Reys is definitely a good choice for a special occasion in Hilo.

We stopped by Hilo and needed to eat dinner after a day of exploring. We stopped by without any reservations and were seated right away. The hostess and waiter were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was slightly had the nice casual Hawaiian dress vibe but some customers literally must have came from the beach in tank tops and all. Food wise - ordered the ribs and they were soooo good. I would highly recommend it. It wasn't spicy or anything. The meat just slid off the bone - I wanted more!!! The pork chop came recommended. It was flavorful but after awhile I think the mushrooms with the pork chops aren't my thing but the side of mashed potatoes and veggies were paired really nice with the pork chops. I'd give it a less star for it and would have gone with maybe the ribs as an entree if it was cooked the same ways as the appetizer The kids enjoyed their meal and enjoyed their hamburgers. We would come again.

Ahi Tartare Happy Hour. Amazing. I could eat ten more.

Wow-just a fantastic place in Hilo town. Was an old bank (1909), so it's very charming and even has the walk in safe still in the restaurant. Great Happy Hour menu, fantastic service and great pupus.

We stumbled on this by accident. And we are happy we did. We had a party of 6 adults. The menu is varied as we have a person who doesn't eat seafood. I had order the seafood trio; whole you got a lot of food at no point did I feel I over ate. The Ono was grilled to perfection and the shrimp delicious. But the topper was the crab cake with pineapple salsa. YUM! My husband had the fish and chips and felt that the fish was too well done. One of the couples we were with had the pork spring rolls. Tried a bite and would really get again. The other couple were with had gotten the chicken and shrimp with angel hair pasta and she said it was mouthwatering. The portions are generous amounts. I had the Lilikoi margarita oh my was it good. And for dessert I had a Choconut Martini! Worth it! Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu.

When is happy hour?

4-5pm

Do you need to make reservations at Happy Hour?

No but it's a good idea. Rest is the app they use to book online reservations. Super easy.

Are service and/or emotional support animals allowed on your property?

I do not believe that an establishment can deny your service animal by law. Emotional support animals are a different story.

When is happy hour?

It is daily from 16:00 to 17:00.

We are on vacation. Is there a dress requirement?

No, it's casual

Is Jackie Reys charging a 20 dollar service charge fee?

Absolutely not. Cheers— Paul, the owner.

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

The menu felt very "meh"...nothing particularly exciting or memorable. The cocktails looked great in photos, so we ordered the piña colada flight, but it tasted like there was little to no rum in it. Pretty presentation, but very mediocre overall. Food was just okay. The burger wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The fried shrimp dish was disappointing and lacked flavor. The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. Not terrible, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. The staff were all very nice though. Service friendly.

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

The reviews sold me. And then... reality arrived. The server was lovely but clearly trapped in a one-person reenactment of Kitchen Nightmares. Two of us ordered dinner at the same time. My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. That said--I'm a generous soul. They need a chance to redeem what was, without exaggeration, a masterclass in how not to run dinner service.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing.
