When we lived in Kona, we would frequent the Jackie Reyes there. The food was good, but for the price, the entire experience - not even the old, nonfunctional classic car out front - was worth it. BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo. read more

My wife and I went to Jackie Ray's this past Friday. We got a window table and was able to see the activity across the street since it's was Friday downtown open market. If you dine here and are not a big person don't get a booth table as it's the most uncomfortable seating I've ever experienced. The seat is way too far from the table and I needed to lean forward and sit on the edge of the seat. I would recommend getting a table its chair so you be able to adjust yourself to the distance from the table. Server was just Ok and with them placing a water decanter on the table for refill they didn't come around as often. The decanter water has no ice so whatever ice you have in your cup to cool the water. Last time eating at this establishment was better and my only complaint was the window seats next to the picture window and the flys that was buzzing there. Only thing is again there were two big flies buzzing the windows and I had to waved them away. The doors are always shut and only when customers walk in could the flys get in. Staff should walk around before opening and get rid of them. We entered about 5:10 PM so it was opened for just 10 minutes and shouldn't have flys. Air conditioning was on but the temperature was a bit warm and a cooler temperature of maybe 10 degrees be perfect. I had the mochico Ono and it was just ok tasting but on the plate presentation was nice. My wife had the pork chops and she really liked it but said was just a little over cooked. I did try a small sample and to me it was just ok also. ambiance in the restaurant is nice and most of the staff were very attentive. The server we had wasn't and I needed to Get his attention to get my bill even though he had passed multiple times and didn't or should have noticed we were done dining. AVOID! Every food item and drink was genuinely terrible. The pork chop we got for the main was genuinely inedible - extremely overcooked. For appetizers, shisito peppers were completely unseasoned and the sauce with the ravioli was extremely sweet for some reason. Even the fresh fish didn't really taste that fresh. I would highly recommend avoiding this one! Service was quite poor too with the waiter unnecessarily rushing us. The restaurant opened in 2016 in a landmark (built in 1908) building in downtown Hilo. Keeping with the century old charm, this restaurant provides a glimpse of the old world Hilo. A very popular dinner place, reservations are really required and the meals were excellent. (People seem less happy about eating during happy hour). We started out with a strange drink; Lilikoi Martini. But was a pleasant surprise of tasting new things. And the presentation was unique to us adding to the fun. Our entrees were Mochiko Crusted Fresh Catch that was a mahi mahi fish ornately prepared with sweet potatoes from the neighboring island of Molokai. After two weeks of fish meals, I was ready for comfort food; picked the Chicken & Shrimp Angel Hair Pasta. Good portion of shrimp and great simple meal. Great food, outrageously slow service I enjoyed the food a lot. It's too bad it took them 20 minutes to take our order. After that they were pretty quick. I have to call them as I experience them. I wanted to give I higher rating, but can't. I agree with the other reviewer who frequents fine dining establishments. The ambiance was very good. We stumbled in and found ourselves in the middle of Happy Hour. I was not happy by the time I left. The Lava Flow had to be returned as it was "lacking liquor". The nearly tasteless Lava Flow came back without a hint of rum taste. The strawberry and pina colada taste was not discernible, and the drink was not great. The glass it came in was undersized, which is a theme of the night. I've had better luck in gin mills in Key West. The clam chowder was a decent attempt at the classic recipe. The chowder was thick, the potatoes were soft, and the clams fresh and tender. It could be improved with less oregano and it was otherwise over spiced. I'm sure it also was lacking other flavors. I split a tiny cup that was half full and left half of it there. The crispy ribs were not exceptionally crispy, but were kind of decent. They also were not finished. The hummus and pita was eh. The hummus was thick, chunky and strong - Moroccan v Egyptian or Greek style? We ate the pita and left the hummus. The medium rare burgers came out medium well. The fries were decent, and half were left. The burger on the happy hour menu is identical to the burger on the main menu in description and price. It was a half decent burger, but not close to being memorable. The steak frites were good, properly cooked. The two virgin Lava Flows came out in drastically inappropriate glassware and cost $11. Not cool. My local Pilsner came out in a brandy sifter. Also over priced and underwhelming. I had anticipated coming back tomorrow to sample other happy hour pupus and the rack of lamb but will pass. However, the wait staffs was great she wasn't being too hovering around and was able to get her attentions when needed. Since moving to the big island, I rarely go out to eat since there are not much of restaurants to choose from. Celebrated my birthday here over dinner. Place used to be an old bank so the vibe is that of old dark wood and concrete floors & leather seats. Great classic look. We came at the sweet spot of dinner and happy hour. So we took advantage of both. Our server was very helpful and recommended the right dish for me. I ordered the HH crab cake which was okay. Didn't prefer the sweet sauce with the crab. The recommended pork chop however was delicious. The pork was juicy with a thick cut over garlic mash potatoes and spinach. We dined here for Thanksgiving this year. The special menu was lights out. I ordered the Lamb chops, my wife ordered the Lobster Tails, and my daughters ordered the Turkey and the NY Strip. We had the Carrot cake for dessert. The wine we ordered was served at cost (no huge retail mark up). Our server was excellent. We decided to head there for dinner a couple of days ago and the restaurant is really nice, it's an converted old bank building and still has some charm with high ceilings and the safe still there to see. Drinks were fantastic, they know how to mix a good drink. Food was so so, I had their steak which I ordered medium, came completely well done and on the chewy side. The shrimp with the meal were cooked great though and I loved the herb butter. My husband's burger was unfortunately also well done and even a bit black, so a miss on some of the food. Our server was very sweet and she handled a lot of tables, which seemed to be all over the place, very well. The restaurant was slightly had the nice casual Hawaiian dress vibe but some customers literally must have came from the beach in tank tops and all. Food wise - ordered the ribs and they were soooo good. I would highly recommend it. It wasn't spicy or anything. The meat just slid off the bone - I wanted more!!! The pork chop came recommended. It was flavorful but after awhile I think the mushrooms with the pork chops aren't my thing but the side of mashed potatoes and veggies were paired really nice with the pork chops. But the topper was the crab cake with pineapple salsa. YUM! My husband had the fish and chips and felt that the fish was too well done. One of the couples we were with had the pork spring rolls. Oh my golly wow!! Food is absolutely amazing!! We were on our last night of our vacay and thought to stop by here after a long drive along the coast before going back to our hotel in Kailua-Kona. We had the ahi tuna tower for appetizer which was fantastic. Never had papaya with my ahi but it went so well with yeh sauce and everything in it. We had prime rib which was cooked perfectly to our medium rare and the rib sauce with their horseradish were perfectly paired with the meat. Omagee so good. My hubby got the seafood duo m, seared ahi was cooked perfectly with the shrimp tempura. Oh so good!! They seated us and took our food and drinks orders, which started arriving soon after. The drinks were ok, but the food was quite good. It's on the street corner with parking in a gravel lot across Keawe St. It's an upscale booth and table setup in a historic building which used to be a bank. Service was prompt and attentive. I ordered the Market Fish & Chips, which was Striped Marlin. My food came on a very hot dish, as warned by my server. The shoe string fries were crispy, moist and lightly salted. The fish had a light crunchy brown panko breading was mild, tender and flaky lightly salted. The tartar sauce was tasty and also lightly salted. Everything was very tasty, probably due to the salt. This place has a reputation for being pricey, but I didn't think they're out of line based on my experience for what you get. Nice restaurant in Hilo. It's located in a beautiful building which used to be a bank. Two large vaults can be seen in the back near the bathroom and bar. The food is a bit on the costly side but it is a nicer restaurant and the food was delicious. Service was also great. I highly recommend the seafood tower. Everything in it was so delicious, especially the Thai curry sauce and ube! The chicken and tomato pasta was very fresh tasting. We ate there three times during our three day stay in Hilo! We did venture other places but we had to go back for the daily specials just because the first day was so delicious! They do run out. The service was nothing exceptional but the food made up for it... I think the staff might have realized we were coming back then the service was getting better. The staff knew a lot of usuals. I don't have any particular suggestions but to try to get there for the all the daily specials and try all the appetizers and desserts. IT TOOK 15 MINUTES OF WAITING AND I HAD TO ASK A STAFF MEMBER WHO OUR SERVER IS. Our server finally showed up. His name was K.G. He apologized for wait and then took our order. We got appetizers at 730 so 60 minutes for appetizers.... So we went from 15 minutes waiting for our server. To then another 45 MINUTES for appetizers?!? That's absurd!! Which was so unfortunate because the poke tower was presented so beautifully but again the service ruined that with long waits and lack of table touching... We put in our entree order at 7pm pst and we get our entrees at 8:30pm. My plate was BURNING HOT. Aka left in the window for who knows how long. I got the fish and chips. Easily the most dry food I've ever eaten in my life. My wife orders the ravioli which was decently good but when you wait 1.5 hours I don't think any food can make up for that. I never like to do this but unfortunately K.G. ruined my wife's birthday dinner with not only his lack of checking in but honestly seemed like he didn't care one bit to be at work today or about my wives special day. He never refilled our waters. He never asked how we liked the food. Shoot I think he forgot completely about us and my wife's birthday. I even let the host/manager know about how awful our experience was and her reply to our terrible dining experience was "oh well we had a high volume of food today." I own my own business AND I've also been a server this man and this restaurant wasn't busy. K.G. just didn't want to do his job today. And the worst part is the manager and unfortunately I didn't get her name but she was Asian America didn't apologize either.. so not only does this place have terrible service but they also won't take accountability for their mistakes. I even turned back to see if she reacted to how disappointed I was in my meal. And guys she literally just goes back to work like nothing happens. So I'm guessing this server is always like this and they just let it happen. Guys I'm not kidding try a different restaurant in town.. If I had to tell anyone about my experience here. First time dining here and it was during lunch hour. The vibe is on the upscale side if you're into that. Surprisingly there was no line and we were seated immediately with no rsvp. Our hostess and waiter were welcoming and got our order in pretty fast. We ordered the ribs, ceasar salad, and fish sandwich. The ribs were by far our favorite as they were so juicy and tender. I wish it came with more ribs because it was amazing. The sauce complemented it well. On the other hand the ceasar salad and fish sandwich were just basic and nothing special.
