My mother frequents this establishment with her friends, however this time, she brought my father and I. It was both my father and i's first time and we were thoroughly surprised. I ordered the sesame boneless chicken. My father ordered the grilled mahi mahi sandwich and my mother ordered the chicken pot pie. My plate was piled with food and I even had enough to take home for dinner. The chicken was nice and crispy and cooked to perfection. My father grilled mahi mahi sandwich was loaded with mahi mahi. There was so much mahi mahi that he had to remove some and eat it on the side. The fries were hearty and cooked perfectly. My mom's chicken pot pie was perfectly seasoned and flaky. It was a beautiful, sunny day and the breeze was blowing perfectly through the restaurant. I would suggest paying attention to the weather as it probably can get cold once it starts raining. We recently held a children's birthday party here, and while the food and service were both very good, the experience was unfortunately overshadowed by major issues with the agreed-upon pricing and food serving. Before the event, we clearly discussed that import beers should not be served as a part of the hosted bar and therefore should not be charged. To our surprise, imports were served anyway, and we were then billed for them. For a kids' party, this felt unreasonable and extremely frustrating. This experience left a very poor impression of the leadership and coordination at this venue. It's disappointing because the staff working the event were kind, helpful, and represented true Aloha, but their efforts are overshadowed by poor communication and management decisions at the top. Because of this, I strongly do not recommend hosting events here, and I personally will not recommend Muni Golf Course as a venue moving forward. Be warned that since the food was paid by head... we ended up paying quite a bit for prime rib, shrimp scampi etc. When we wanted seconds since our families can eat... the food was packed away including 2 huge prime ribs which we couldn't take. I asked if I could do a last call and they told me no since it was in the contract it could only be served 1-1/2 hrs into the event.... like really? $4,500+ spent on just food alone and the rest of my family couldn't eat? Don't get me wrong.. follow a policy but if people is hungry.. serve them for what we paid for. I read in another review that they packed plates for the service memebers to take home, I am a beleiver that we should one never waste food but there more than enough for seconds AND for the workers to take. At the end of it all, everyone enjoyed there time... what stinks is all of this is going to be part of this memory. I should have read the reviews about this place before money was spent. Up in Hilo where ee went for a baby party, my brother inlaw n sister inlaw took us to this place for dinner, Fairways. Not knowing it was a golf course. The name lives up to it lol. The place is clean n spacious. Lots of parking. The workers are awesome n great customer service n very polite. What caught my eye was how much people who don't golf goes the to eat. As the waitress n waiter were being iyt everyone else food, I was looking at it with a woow. The portion n size were big. The prime rib looked amazing n delicious. Everything look great. The had the calamari n 2 beers. The family had a variety of foods. As we shared n sample each other goods, it all was very good to me. Located at the Hilo municipal golf course, Fairway Grill is a no frills restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's quite popular with golfers and nearby residents. I've come only for lunch and dinner and always left satisfied and full. Prices are adequate for the portions and they have a good selection of alcoholic beverages. This is my second review about this place. As you know, Hilo isn't food capital and very hard to find good place to eat. Fairway Grill is one of my regular place to eat. To be honest, quality has gone down recently but still within acceptable limit. However, we were really disappointed today. Sunday afternoon around 1:30 we were there. Seems pretty busy. We got table and a server brought us a glass of water and said "I'll be back to take your orders" And wait, wait and wait more than 10 minutes. We already decided what we having today. A server never come back to our table. Not even pay attention to us. We saw another table right next to us walked-in 5-6 minutes after we seated. Another server taking care of them right away and brought drinks and takes orders. We were still waiting and nothing happened. Another few minutes, We couldn't stand any longer and just left. This is NOT first time for us refusing service. One Friday evening few month ago, we were there and place was pretty crowded as well. We standing at entrance and kept wait for someone lead us to our table for 10 minutes at least. They not even pay attention to us either and we decided to leave.... Oh well.... Should I take this place off my restaurant list ?? No matter how good the food is, if service is terrible, I won't go back there. read more

Fairway Grill is located in the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. They serve Breakfast, lunch and dinner. This Review is for Breakfast only as they started Breakfast service at 8am. We decided to try some place different for breakfast. Fairway Grill has a large seating area and being in Hilo everyone trickles in slowly after opening. In other words, it was pretty empty. The views from the restaurant is the golf course which is nice. I ordered the Brisket Benedict, the brisket sits on top of a grilled hash brown and topped with hollandaise sauce. If there is a star next to the menu name you also get a choice of an additional side. I chose the pancakes (2 pieces) as my side. The poached eggs were perfect and the brisket was fork tender, I enjoyed this filling dish. My wife ordered the eggs, spam and hash brown, there were no complaints from her. Service was a little on the slower side considering the wasn't that many people, but we were in no rush. The main thing she kept our coffee cups filled. The food and value is good, I would come back again to try the other menu items. Overall 3.5 Stars for breakfast. read more

Decent place to grab a casual lunch after golf. Or if you live in the neighborhood, they open for breakfast. Full dinner menu also. Burgers are what to get when you're craving one. They're huge and can get a little messy. The "Pull" burger is a whopping two patties, bbq brisket, bacon and a fried egg. The bbq brisket wasn't a just-for-show add on either, it was pretty good. My fish burger came with two filling Mahi Mahi fillets coated in an egg batter that I thought I'd be mad at but wasn't. Well, it jutted out the sides a bit, but I guess that's bang for your buck. Twisted fries! They were the pleasant surprise for me. Eggs Benedicts were just OK, but hash browns were really crispy on the outside which I love. Will be back for the convenience. This was my first time going to Fairway Grill. The menu was diverse and had a lot of local options as well. We ordered the flatbread, tacos, spicy korean chicken, and kona mud pie for dessert. All the food was delicious and the portion sizes were reasonable for the price. Unfortunately, our food took over 45 minutes as the meals came out at random times. Half our group got our meal while the other half waited an extra 15 minutes. The place was empty when we went as well. Though our service was nice, the wait was just long. read more

I love places like this that serve diner type meals. I've wanted to try Fairway Grill since the last time I golfed here. The dining area is simple but spacious. At lunchtime there was quite a good crowd dining there and got even busier as we dined. I believe that all of the crowd was local people from the area. We ordered a kid's chicken katsu for my granddaughter, I had the prime rib dip, my son got a braised beef sandwich and his wife ordered the chicken Caesar salad. The food was great and there were other tasty looking food on the other tables that I may want to return and sample. This is a good place to meet with friends and have a cocktail or two because you need patience when you come here. The service is friendly but the food does take a while to get to your table. If it wasn't for the wait I would've given 5 stars. read more

We've been here several times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each time has been good as far as food. Once I had a waitress that had attitude, I asked to sit near the window. But she sat us at a table in the middle of the dining room this was breakfast. That was my first experience with her. Then, she sat her friends at the window they came in after us. She was pleasant with her friends but not so nice to us. Sour, personality. Another time we had the Hawaiian lady (Hawaiian/Mix) she was really nice and pleasant to us (4 at the table). This was late afternoon. She was very pleasant and friendly. The personality and attitude of the server can leave a negative effect and ruins the good food. We've been here several times and have had different staff, each time the food is good. The service depends on the server. What we really enjoy is the Prime Rib, Pull Pork Nacho's, Tempura Poke Roll, BBQ Teriyaki Pork, Mahi Mahi Sandwich, Chicken Katsu and more. read more

Just went for the first time with a group of 4 on a random Thursday night. We called ahead and made reservations, but it didn't get too crowded. We got the brisket loaded fries and pulled pork nachos to start and both were very tasty! The portions weren't quite as big as I had anticipated, but two appetizers were just enough for 4 people. I had shared the carnitas tacos and the French dip sandwich with someone else. The French dip sandwich was great -- the meat was really soft and the au jus was flavorful. The taco filling was tasty, but the shell of the taco was left on the heat for a little too long (or else maybe the griddle needs to be cleaned?) and some parts were a little too burnt and bitter for my liking. All in all a great place to grab a bite, especially after a quick round of golf! read more

Absolutely horrible staff and experience. Went to Fairway Grill (1/30/24) we arrived around 1ish with 40ish "local" people. There were maybe 6 other people at the time we arrived. We went there a few times before this visit soo we love supporting local businesses. My family, was given so much issues by staff informing us that a party of 51 (tour group from cruiseship) was coming in and we were going to be second priority which we understood and simply asked for drinks. We were very understanding and willing to do whatever and enjoy without any stress to staff. Staff members were "sh*t" talking my family right in my face, brother and cousins at the bartop. They were extremely rude and did not care at all. 3/4 staff were absolutely horrendous as they continued to bad mouth my family (30mins) of this and they did nothing as they made it very obvious to my entire family. Service was beyond poor and as locals are baffled by the treatment we got. The tourists who will probably never come back as they were also poorly treated and spoke to. So it must be a common thing. I inquired about an Long island as I saw there were the drinks and mixes to make one and the staff member tossed the menu on the bartop and said you can only order whats on the menu "thats it". What bar doesnt serve long islands?!? The ambiance was so horrible as fans were off, tvs off and service so bad. Our recent visit has left a bitter taste to my "local" family and we will NEVER go back or suggest this place. Super yum! Located at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. There is plenty of parking and plenty of open seating space. There are lots of windows so fresh air flows through the place. The wait staff was friendly and the service was quick. We had the shrimp flatbread and that was delicious! The shrimp was cooked perfectly! We also had the mahi-mahi sandwich and that too was delicious and perfectly cooked. The fish was moist and the bread was fresh. They are fairly priced, the mahi-mahi sandwich was $14 and I believe the shrimp flatbread was $15. Definitely worth a try! read more

Was curious to try this place on the golf course. Wanted to go for breakfast but our Hilo schedule only gave us opportunity to go at 10:00. We asked when lunch started and she said 10:30, darn. Wasn't overly impressed with breakfast options but was Ok. We started with coffee which sadly wasn't very good, not weak but just not good flavor. We both decided on just their basic breakfast, wanted eggs Benny but I'm not paying $16 unless it's a fancy version w/fresh grilled fish or Kaluha pork etc. Our basic breakfast was 2 eggs, meat choice and a side choice, meaning you had to chose between hash browns OR toast which is odd. $9.99. I had ham, I prefer ham steak not deli thin sliced ham for a breakfast meat. It was a bit dry and hard to slice almost like heated in microwave, eggs and pancakes good. Hubby had bacon, nothing special, just typical thin bacon. He asked for extra extra dark crispy hash browns, but they were just golden and white inside, ugh. Service was fine, atmosphere fine, had nice breeze next to big side door being open. It's a good size place. Parking was horrible, every spot taken until the far end of lot where the driving range is, about a block away. They offer happy hour 11-4 with good beer prices (starts at $3) but the hh pupus were the same price as I saw on reg. menu online which is confusing. You'd think it would be at least $2-3 off since even edamame (least expensive) starts at $10!! May give another try for lunch next time although the new steak pics look delicious but they come at a price and I don't really want to spend $30-50 per dinner entree in a casual cafe/grill bar setting. read more

Hidden gem in Hilo. Not sure why they don't have more business, the food here is ʻono! Service was great. Our server was new, but she was so nice and friendly to us. The menu is a little hard to read cause of the font they used, but they do have a lot of options. My husband and I went here for a Saturday lunch. We originally made reservations for lunch, but didn't need to seeing that the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived. Our food came out pretty quick and prices were reasonable compared to how high prices are elsewhere. What made our lunch better was the view of the golf course. The day we went, it was nice & sunny too! Overall, great experience. We'll be back for dinner! read more

I am going to paint you guys a picture of this horrible establishment. As I've read here from other yelpers, the staff and lack of management is the underlying problem. And just like a previous review we were also treated terribly by the staff who proceeded to talk smack about our family as well in front of other guests at the party. Anywho, on with the picture of this crappy establishment... We had reserved a room for a party with at least a 100 people... my mother in law paid for everything... prime rib dinner, pupus, the works. We had some of us on a bar tab... the party is going great until dinner starts. Suddenly a staff member takes it upon herself to threaten my mother in law and sister in law because one of our guests had brought in a Monster energy drink from his car. This lady physically followed my mother in law to the table where the boy who had brought the drink in was sitting and stood over him with her hands on her hips and glared. The monster was removed from the table, apologies were given and we moved on with a warning that if anyone else brought in anything from outside we would be kicked out. Well, lo and behold the staff "caught" another infraction and proceeded to shut down the party. We had just finished dinner and still had another two hours that we had reserved the room for. That didn't matter. They told us to leave. My poor mother in law didn't even have a chance to finish dinner! One of the servers came over as soon as she started to eat with a phone, shoved it in her face and demanded she talk to the boss who was on the line! I was flabbergasted!!! How rude! I had to go demand a take out container for her to be able to take the food she paid hundreds of dollars for (prime rib and the works) since we were getting the boot. Guess what the staff was doing while my mother in law was getting reamed over the phone by their boss??? Making HUGE TAKE OUT PLATES for themselves and probably their families by the look of it didn't want to stress the rest of the family by making a scene so we left reluctantly. You would think that would be the end of the story of the most crappy establishment in Hilo but no, it sadly isn't. The next day the boss calls my poor mother in law AGAIN to tell her that we were the WORST family he's ever had to serve in his long illustrious career being master chef of Coconut Grill. Like WHAT? Excuse me? That was totally uncalled for and unnecessary. My mother in law was in tears after that phone call which prompted me to write this review! STAY AWAY FROM THIS ESTABLISHMENT LIKE THE PLAGUE! I'm giving you fair warning!! read more

Went on a busy day and seemed like chef/cook(s) couldn't keep up with the volume but we were warned before sitting down that food orders were backed up and would be like longer than usual wait. We decided to order some drinks while we waited. Once we finally got our food it was very tasty. Waiters were friendly but had to ask for water refills more than once . Ordered the "Pull" burger and it was huge. It was a little messy but tasted great. The beef brisket pieces inside while very tender, almost too tender (like too much tenderizer). Wife ordered the small Caesar salad and the spiral cut fries with brisket, bacon, & cheese topping. Both were very generous portions and tasted great.
