Let's talk about the portion sizes because they are very LARGE and in-charge. Nobody will leave hungry and some may be rolled out. Seeing the mountains of plates at the surrounding tables I quickly tried to pick a lighter brunch. After the waitress mentioned the fresh wahoo I quickly said Yes please. The sides were great. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and luscious with the perfect amount of gravy. The hash browns were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft potato middle. The eggs still had the golden center once we cut them open. The parking lot can be filled with locals, but everyone is going in and out quickly. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday's. They have an oxtail special only served specific days and the fresh corn beef that all the surrounding tables ordered that was making my mouth water. I definitely can't wait to come back. Inside, the restaurant definitely feels like a small town diner. The food portions are very generous! there menu is extensive so there is something for everyone. I had the loco moco and it was great. Between my husband and I's two meals though, we did end up taking a box home as it is a lot of food, so come hungry! Their dessert menu looked delicious but unfortunately they were out of the 2 pies we wanted to try, so make sure you get there early if you want some pie! Ordered a seafood platter that came with shrimp, calamari, and mahi fish. Served with a side salad and Hawaiian roll. Fish was nicely cooked, not too salty or dry at all. Shrimp had a good crunch and calamari was the perfect texture, not too chewy at all! Also had a chocolate pie for dessert. Nostalgic, home style local restaurant and my dad's favorite place to eat. Every time we go, meals are consistent and delicious. My usual orders are the hamburger steak, taco salad or rotisserie chicken. Today I ordered the taco salad, robust in size and flavor. My dad ordered the teri chicken plate. My tortilla was warm and crispy filled with yummy taco fillings. My dad enjoyed his meal and didn't talk till he was finished. Service is always friendly and consistent, with someone always coming by check on status or fill water. The food and service are the very best. While I often order fish for health reasons I rarely truly enjoy it. It just isn't usually very good. Not so at Don's; the Ono was amazing, the way fish used to be. And it was cooked perfectly and priced reasonably. Service was exceptional, particularly given that we were a large group. I went to Dons a few weeks ago. I haven't been there in years. Their menu looked the same and wasn't very detailed. I ordered the won ton mien. Thinking it's something I ate all the time at other restaurants. It came to the table and looked good. I took 2 bites and ate a won ton when I realized it had shrimp in it. I am allergic to shellfish. I immediately looked at the menu to check to make sure I hadn't made a mistake and missed that it had shrimp in it but it wasn't on there. I then asked the waitress who didn't even know either and she had to check with the cook, who confirmed it indeed have shrimp. I said I think that is something important you guys should put on your menu. They comped the bill and we left immediately. I then emailed their owner and notified him of the incident and suggested that they should put highly allergic foods in their menu. He replied with "they don't have room in their menu to list all ingredients ". Really. You can't say " contain shrimp, nuts etc He also said " he hopes my next experience is better and that I should ask all the time if there's shellfish in dishes". I felt disregarded for everyone that has food allergies. That's why theirs menus. You should at least make it know if dishes contain food allergies!!!! read more

Service is quick and super friendly, and they have a pretty extensive menu (they even have a vegetarian dish for those non meat eaters). Wow hands down the best experience Hilo side at a dine-in-restaurant it's really cool they also have a side window to order take-out! Ev gave hands down the best service filled up our water a million times and was so attentive, very understanding and just great attitude! True aloha! I've been coming to Don's since I was a kid, and now in my mid-twenties, it's still one of my favorite places. That is exactly the same menu in use. We placed our order just minutes after being seated. They do not offer Coca-Cola products, it's Pepsi and their associated products. We all drank water, which the waitress kept topped up. There were four (4) in our party and we each ordered something different, (a) 1/2 pound hamburger + bacon + picket - tomato + lettuce and French fries, (b) Beef au jus + fries, (c) Cobb salad w/salsa topping and (d) taco salad. The service is always friendly no matter how busy they are, there is plenty of parking, it's conveniently located close to my job, the airport, my regular hotel, and it is always clean. There are so many delicious options on their menu and I have never been disappointed. On this day (1/13/2023) I had the taco salad. Hands down the best taco salad. Their homemade tortilla bowl is the most delicious, perfectly textured bowl I've ever eaten. I had mine with ground beef and salsa. It came with a small slice of melon on the side. I mopped my entire plate. It was as if there was never any food on it. That good! I ordered a slice of custard pie for dessert. Yes, they have dessert here. My recommendation is the ice cream pie.
