I think this has to be our favorite breakfast/brunch spot. We're from Hilo, and out of all the popular places, Coconut Grill consistently has some of the friendliest staff and best service. We really love their menu--it has a great variety. You've got your standard breakfast options, but also lots of different omelets and benedicts to choose from. Some of our favorites range from their prime rib to the Dungeness crab omelet and the kalua pork benedict. I personally love the Korean BBQ with kimchi fried rice--it's always a go-to. They also have a solid kids menu, which makes it super family-friendly. Overall, always a great experience and definitely one of our go-to spots. read more

This restaurant is right next to the hotel we were staying. Our server was so great and sweet. There were a lot of locals there too, which told us it was probably really good :) it was delicious! Also don't skip the pie! It's huge! read more

The food was ok. I ordered the pork ribs, a little dry in some edges- the bake potato was overly whipped and made too starchy- it is pre-made to resemble "twice baked potato"- no sour cream but, crumbled bacon and cheese mixed together. The side of baked beans were tooo sweet and not to my liking- another guest had a hamburger which was BIG! She asked no onions and it had. Our other guest ordered the Hawaiian Luau plate- there was no complaint there. Service was busy and we had to ask for us to be served- they forgot about us. Ambiance ok. One of our top 5 favorite breakfast/brunch places. Nice view, great service, tasty food; what more can you ask for? We don't really come here for lunch or dinner, but brunch here is where it's at. Large menu, everyone will find something that they like. Just be prepared to wait for a bit, seating is limited since it appears that they're only using a portion of the restaurant. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner hear last week. The service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was nice inside and had a big menu full of goodies. We got a yummy French dip with onion rings and some kind of steak veggie rice plate that was also great. The fried ice cream trio dessert was huge and tasty after a long day. I definitely recommend this place for a casual meal when in Hilo. read more

Came in at 10:45am was told that they are no longer serving breakfast and will be switching over to lunch to us and 1 lady dining alone. Seated the lady that came in 10 seconds ahead of the 2 of us. We were just standing and some manager lady who was grouchy and sitting on a 4 top alone with all her stuff all over told us again that they were switching to lunch. I told her yes we were told that, she then rudely asked "what do you want to do then?" I answered "could we be seated?" She pointed at a small table behind us towards the other entrance of the restaurant away from the rest of the customers who could get service. No waters no menus and we just kept waiting. Finally a nice server came to give us menus and ask what drinks we would like, the same grouchy manager lady interrupts her taking our drink order and said that we shouldn't be served since we are guests for lunch and stops her from even bringing us waters or finishing our drink order. Whole time she was condescending and rude, I've never had service like this before in here when I have visited in the past. This is crazy, not even waters just because we missed your breakfast service and then giving us fucking attitude and walking around on the phone putting all your shit everywhere while half the restaurant is empty is insane. I hope to find out who is the owner of this establishment so we can talk about this restaurant's opportunities for improvement. Until then, I will not go if I see that same grouchy grams working. Food is good, but not good enough for people to be treated like shit. read more

The service here was really solid and full of aloha spirit. And you can't beat the location given we were staying next door at the SCP. But the food was just ok. Adequate but not super tasty. But again if you have a late flight and are hungry, it gets the job done and with a smile! read more

My husband and I got the cane sugar soda, Mahi Mahi fish and chips, the kahlua burger and chips. So darn tasty. This is definitely the place the locals all go to. We got off our cruise ship and asked the staff where we should go to eat and everyone's consensus was the Coconut Grill. Several people asked us all to bring back their favorite dishes. read more

I enjoyed the coconut shrimp tikis. The visual display was intriguing and the flavor was delicious. Our waitress, Scottlyn, was phenomenal. She was super friendly and was gracious to accommodate all of the menu customizations requested by our family of four. Five stars for Scottlyn's outstanding customer service! This was right next to the hotel we stayed at Hotel so we came here for breakfast. We got seated right away. The omelet punulu was literally so bland that my hubby and I couldn't eat it. But we were hungry so we ate. No salt, no pepper, no seasonings, nothing. The 3 stars is for CBP the coconut banana pancake. This was so yummy and topped with macadamia nuts. So unique. They first cook it and then bake it. Makes the pancake so crispy and crunchy while the insides are quite soft and moist. Must try! Fresh papaya was very fresh. Yum. Service was fairly slow. Stopped in as we were aimlessly wondering on Valentines Day. Lots of places and zero availability and they worked us in. The fish and chips was a good beer battered crunch and fries were hot. I enjoyed the presentation and overall taste. The steamed veggies were lackluster and better had they just been left off. Wife had the prime rib sandwich and it was okay. Just awful. They barely had any people on a Sunday brunch. Still took them 1 hr after ordering to put food in our plate. Only to hard boiled eggs on a Benedict. Then the waitress didn't offer to write off the bill despite not eating it. Avoid this place. read more

If you are looking for another unassuming locals place away from downtown, head over towards Banyan Drive and check out Coconut Grill. The food is made with love and is pretty darn good. We wandered in here and had the sizzling prime rib and the angel hair pasta with shrimp. We were warmly greeted and seated right away. Having been a waitress in my past, I was impressed with how well the staff worked together. This type of service is lacking these days but not here in HI where the spirit of ohana prevails. 5 stars to the entire staff which includes the Chef. Our food came out quickly which was actually a refreshing change. My prime rib was truly sizzling and very tender. I asked for a side of brown rice because I needed something to help with sucking up the beef juices. I would say that adding a side vegetable would be nice IMO. Hubby really enjoyed his pasta. He commented on how well the vegetables were cooked (spinach, zucchini and mushrooms) to be al dente and the shrimp was perfect. The shrimp had a "snap" . The only addition to the dish could be chili flakes and a bit more al dente in his opinion. The spinach artichoke was delightfully different and old school. The slices of bread are warm which is refreshing to take that extra step on quality. The dessert menu looks amazing but the expense and size of the portion is frightening. Next time, visit for dessert. For visitors, there is a fee on the take out containers which I hadn't experienced in my state as much. This is a cool, down home, locals place that produces really good food that is served by a staff that are a happy ohana. read more

Great variety of items on the menu! All kinds. I ended up with the French Dip. My sissy had the Lobster sandwich. Had difficulty choosing! The best part was the Bloody Marys! Omg. I could have had just THAT for brunch - Not one, but two skewers of bacon wrapped shrimp, of course celery, olives and a lime wedge. They no mess around. It was beautiful! Hahaha... Enjoyed watching our local kids across the street at Ice Pond catching fish and jumping into the water! Gotta go again soon... read more

We were staying at the hotel next door. Very convenient location. I had the fettuccine with grilled shrimp. There were lots of vegetables and shrimp. It was delicious! Portion was a lot. I wasn't able to finish it. My husband had the furikake chicken and all that was left was a scoop of rice. He said it was yummy! Staff were friendly and we didn't wait for our food. Great service and really great breakfast. Came in with the family looking for an early lunch, but they were only serving breakfast. Slight disappointment but once we saw the great options on the menu we decided to do breakfast which did not disappoint. My kids went with local fare including Loco Moco and Spam and eggs, and I enjoyed an eggs Benedict over fish that was great. Served on corn tortillas with hollandaise sauce on the side, a combo I had never seen before that was delicious. You can also order other interesting Benedict's in one egg or 2 egg portions. My wife had a veggie omelet that was very good. Our server was delightful and made sure we were taken care of. read more

It was a little after 12pm and I really wanted a local style breakfast but other places were super packed. So we decided to stop in and give it a try; it's been years since I've been here. Anyways, from the menu we ordered: Cobb Salad Big Island Sliders Hawaiian Chopped Steak Kahuna Burger My son said the sliders were too fancy and didn't taste anything like a pulled pork sliders should; I laughed and gave him the salad. He ate the ham, eggs, and chicken from it. I thought the chopped steak was alright, different with the sauce being sweet, but the meat was soft and tender. So that was good. I was told the Kahuna burger could've been less dry but for a burger it was good. read more

Starting off with the food, it was delish. I order the Kahaluu Eggs Benedict with crab cake.. so good! I really enjoyed the CBP Coconut Banana Pancake with Coconut syrup and macadamia nuts. Really enjoyed the food at this restaurant. The portions were of adequate side and everything was very tasty. Great location over looking ice pond, with a view of Hilo bay in the distance. It is at a hotel so street parking in front may be a little scarce if you go before the visitors have left for the day. There are three spots in the back of the restaurant. We came here when visiting Hilo. The food was so good we came back again two consecutive nights. My husband had the fresh catch and the crab cakes, and I had the seafood crepes, the soufflé, and the prime rib sandwich. Everything was delicious. The restaurant is quiet and good for conversation, and the servers were attentive without being overbearing. Definitely a must visit if you're looking for food in Hilo. read more

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.
