Do you know how excited I was to finally try this place? Olympic-level excited. I know good Thai. I've eaten Thai in places where the menu doesn't apologize to you in English. The reviews sold me. And then... reality arrived. The server was lovely but clearly trapped in a one-person reenactment of Kitchen Nightmares. Two of us ordered dinner at the same time. My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. I cannot believe I've passed this place so many times and have only managed to eat here now! Located in downtown Hilo facing Bayfront, Tina's Garden Cafe is a cute hole-in-the-wall restaurant filled with little trinkets and homey decor. My aunty chose this place for lunch because she was craving their tom kha and I am so happy I tagged along! We ordered summer rolls with shrimp, pad kee mao with chicken (they had it on special), and the tom kha with shrimp. My favorite thing about all of the dishes we had was the vegetables; they were good quality and they used a lot of vegetables in every dish. The summer rolls came with a peanut sauce and it was tasty and fresh. We ordered it with shrimp and it came with six pieces. I was excited to see pad kee mao was on special and ordered it but it was sadly lacking flavor; I wouldn't order this next time. However, the real star of the show was the tom kha. We ordered it with shrimp and it also included carrot, spinach, heart of palm, pumpkin, and celery. The soup was SO delicious and has a perfect balance of sweet and sour while still having that thick consistency. I would 100% come back several times for this soup and wish I took a photo but was too excited for it. Service was great! The servers are genuine, nice people and were also very attentive. Just a heads up that if you need takeout containers, they do charge $1 for a container. There's a parking lot outside the restaurant but you're competing with patrons of other businesses downtown so be prepared to walk a few minutes from your car if it's a busy time. read more

I ate the spicy tuna summer roll a total of 6 times during my 3 week trip to Hilo. I can't recommend it enough! The flavor of the tuna is incredible, and the heat it packs is the perfect amount. Thai burrito was missing tofu even after requesting to add tofu. Coconut curry was not good. Some veggies on top were grilled but cabbage was raw. And it had a lot of cabbage. It is clean, has natural lighting, has a bunch of booths and tables and the employees greet you right as you walk in. It's a very healthy restaurant with minimal spices and sauce. I've been going for Tina's, since the early 2000s when she first open. She has since sold her restaurant. But they have kept the same recipes. Her food is absolutely the best Thai food you're ever going to have. It's also unique, with things like Thai pizza, which is a spinach tortilla, full of coconut cream vegetable smothered and cheese absolutely amazing. She has the best coconut soup ever she uses creamy coconut, plenty pumpkin, and a handful of fresh spinach on top. I can go on and on about all the wonderful dishes she has there. We went there for Father's Day, and we did not regret it. This was such a unique dish and I'd highly recommend anyone coming into Tina's to get this. The crispy cheese on the ends is so delectable. I got mine with chicken, but really anything would work and be delicious. It is a LOT bigger than I expected from the photos I looked at. No complaints on that but I got three meals out of it. They were busy during lunch time, but we got seated in a short amount of time. The curry was also very good, I would have liked a little more spice with it though, which can be adjusted. read more

Wow. I haven't had food this delicious from any restaurant in a very long time. Organic as much as possible, all fresh food and incredible flavors, made with skill and care. Our baby was cranky and staff knew exactly what to do and they were wonderful. Cute atmosphere- it is a little cafe by the beach so don't have too much expectations about ambiance - but is cozy and pretty. It's all about the food, kindness and the hospitality anyway. Highly recommend the Garden curry with organic local mushrooms and brown rice! Each curry has such different flavor. Also loved our appetizer and the limeade. Major respect and appreciation to this place; in a world where restaurant quality is decreasing so much, this place takes a stand for organic fresh food that makes you feel healthy and satisfied.
