    Seafood platter

So good! Our favorite meal on the island. Hole in the wall spot with fresh eats and friendly service. We tried the seafood platter, chicken katsu curry, and miso ahi which all came with garlic rice and choice of Mac salad or green salad. All of the dishes were made fresh and battered perfectly. My favorite was the seafood platter which included scallop (my favorite). The garlic rice was also so good! They also have a small shelf with premade bento boxes which were cooked fresh. While we had lunch, multiple people came in to buy these including many locals on their lunch break so that's how you know it's good!

My DIL is born and bred Hilo girl now living on the mainland. So every time they return, we hop on the plane to Hawaii island. First stop- Puka puka Kitchen. Small easy to miss shop located in the strip of businesses fronting the bay. Small but mighty! They serve all kinds of bento, plate lunch. The main food comes out later around 10 am and the bento around 9:30. We were there early because my grandson wanted breakfast and they were just making the bento. We were able to snag a chicken katsu and mixed meatball bento. This is the place to grab plate lunch and bento for your travels around Hilo and beyond. Prices are spot on and service is always super friendly!

We had a lovely lunch at this cozy, little local spot. The food was great and came out quick. The place was hustling to keep up with walk-ins & to go orders. The staff was very sweet and thanked us for dining local. I didn't get a pic of the food, but the kitty logo is so cute!

Local lamb and salad with the phenomenal house dressing

This was some of the best food I've ever eaten. We were driving from Volcanoes National Park back to Kona and decided to take a route through Hilo so we could find something for dinner. It was dark and rainy and we couldn't see anything so pulled up along a side street and did a Yelp search. Puka Puka was .1 miles away and got great reviews. Puka Puka is a fairly non-descript hole-in-the-wall, set up mainly for takeout. But the two eat-in tables were free, so we stayed for dinner. My husband's expectations were not high (I have more faith in Yelp reviews). We were all blown away by the food. His lamb was succulent and flavorful. Our daughters and I shared a fried shrimp plate and chicken katsu plate. The shrimp was so perfectly--crisp and somehow impossibly light--like only the best Japanese chefs know how. The chicken katsu was also perfectly lightly breaded and fried, satisfying my younger daughter's craving for "chicken nuggets." The garlic rice was very flavorful and packs a punch. I've always loved the salad dressings at Japanese restaurants, but this salad dressing was the best I've ever had. I think it was described as a fusion of balsamic vinaigrette and a ginger dressing? Hawai'i is known for being expensive, but the plates here were generous and economical.

    Chicken Katsu - Super good!

Puka Puka kitchen is in my top 3 restaurants in all of Hilo. This place is a under rated gem in Hilo. The restaurant is small and I a (always friendly) waitress is there to ask how it's going and serve you old school style. It is so small the chef will say hello to you too. I love this. They have the best curried rice here. Just the rice and salad (which are considered sides) are a meal in itself. Seriously you must try their curried rice, its sooooo good. I always get one of two things depending on my mood. Either: 1. Chicken Katsu - This is a local staple and they do it right here. 2. BBQ Chicken - This is my favorite dish from this location and is what I normally go with. It's healthy and it's satisfying. They also have things like musubi to go and other smaller plates but I just love the BBQ chicken so much it's what I always get.

I've been dreaming of Puka Puka since my first visit, so I was thrilled to stop by again while visiting Hilo. The menu is an eclectic, but delicious, mix of Indian, Mediterranean, and Japanese flavors. My favorite shrimp mini-plate wasn't on the menu this time, but the friendly server offered to make it anyway. It was just as amazing as I remembered. The vibe is cheerful--tables were full, and the cook in the back was singing along to '80s music, which added to its charm. I'll always make a point to come back when I'm in the area.

Oyako Donburi and Nitsuke Butterfish was ONOlish - bentos also looked amazing The chef and server were both very friendly and fun to talk to. We've already been back for our second visit and can confirm it was just as great the 2nd time around

I ordered and chicken katsu and my friend ordered the korean ahi don. One of my favorite places to come to in downtown hilo. Portion sizes are generous as the meal comes with garlic rice and a side salad. Service was quick and the food was delicious.

This place has super good food! During our stay in Hawaii we ate lots of poke which is yummy but it is nice to switch it up and have the fish cooked as well and this place did not disappoint! It is very small and only a handful of people can eat indoors so the vast majority of people get to go. With all the to go orders the host was not very present for those inside but luckily the chef was awesome and he came and took our order right away and helped us out! We got the Ahi Katsu Don plate and everything about it was great. From the flavorful rice to the salad with a delicious dressing to of course the breaded vegetables and ahi. If you find yourself in Hilo this place is definitely worth checking out.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

Our high school club chose to eat here to support a local business for our end-of-year celebration,…read morebut the experience was unfortunately very stressful for our students and staff. We spent two and a half months planning this event. My club treasurer and I confirmed the price on seven different occasions--five times over the phone and twice in person. Each time, we were quoted just over $600 with about a $110 in tips, which we paid in full two days before the party. However, the day before the event, we were told there was a miscalculation and we needed to pay another $400. Because our students had only fundraised the amount we were originally quoted, we had to remove two people from our party and downgrade our menu which did not include drinks anymore. We requested to bring our own drinks due to the last-minute budget change, but we were told we could "only bring alcohol and no outside sodas and juices." It was disappointing that this was the only accommodation offered to a group of high school students. During the party, we also encountered several cleanliness issues. We found hair in the food and cockroaches in the rice, as well as on the walls and near the buffet area. I am totally not joking about the food; I was shocked by what we saw. The servers were very polite and apologized when we let them know, but it was a major concern for us. I understand that accidents happen, but this was a very difficult situation for our club after so much careful planning. Personally, I will not be eating here again for a long time.

My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. That said--I'm a generous soul. They need a chance to redeem what was, without exaggeration, a masterclass in how not to run dinner service.

After an impulsive flight to the sleepy town of Hilo, we just had to stop by and see how this iconic institution had fared. Straight up - they don't make it easy. It seems that Nori's has shifted their business, and don't even offer dine-in service anymore. Hours are extremely limited for take-out only, from 11-6 on Friday-Sunday. That being said, the people working were incredibly kind, and locals still filtered through to purchase chocolate mochi and snacks. It's got that low-key, homey vibe that truly feels like an escape from the big city. Parking is easy in their big lot that is shared with a sports bar, where the hours don't overlap much. We placed our order and waited in the little wooden two person booths, a wistful reminder of the dining experience of the past. Ancient newspaper articles from the cornerstone Tribune Herald adorned the walls, above aging gumball and toy machines with quarter turners. I still remember the satisfying click as the machine released a rush of colorful runts, or perhaps a gumball into a plastic vortex. Anyways, check out the pictures - servings here are NOT for the faint of heart. We ordered a Big Plate (for two people, allegedly), which included mac salad, fried noodles, musubis, kalbi, fish jun, bbq beef, and chicken skewers. For a little over $30, I swear we could've eaten for a couple days. They literally gave us a catering pan of food, with a mountain of mac salad in a separate container. - Kalbi - Sweet, flavorful, meaty. Not the most tender short rib, but top tier marinade. - BBQ Beef - Tasty, tender, and thin cut. Solid offering. - Fried Fish - Jun style with egg batter, amazingly flaky and moist. Tartar sauce included had a little mustard zing to it. - Chicken Skewers - While overcooked and dry, these were so delicious I wanted more. The brushed sauce was so sweet and savory. - Musubis - Massive rice balls with a strip of nori. Probably like 2 scoop rice each at least. Nothing special but gotta have da rice. - Fried noodles - Soft and springy, a bit bland compared to the proteins, but dear god this was a heaping pile that could feed a small family. - Mac Salad - Bland. Needs salt, vinegar, anything more to elevate it. Again, they gave a generous serving, but we barely touched this one. We also tried the hilo style saimin. We must be looking at a different dictionary cuz the "small" was quite large. Fresh, springy noodles in a silky, savory saimin broth, adorned with the traditional naruto, spam, and green onion accompaniments. It's pricier than most at almost $10, but it's fresh and you won't be hungry. I'm impressed at the relative value that Nori's offers in today's economy, but sad at their limited take-out only hours. You can't go wrong with deep fried sushi. Ever. & with every so many bites of the poke, you're hit with that sweet burn of the wasabi. Yum. The Krispy Soy Ginger Chicken is amazing.
