First time we tried this place who one of my friend recommended. They served Sushi and Noodles. As you know, there are no decent sushi place in Hilo other than " Takenoko", so I was little worried. Three of us ordered several dishes which appetizer, Sashimi, Sushi and Rolls... Surprisingly, the quality of the fish was very good and fresh. Sushi rice was little bit mushy but still acceptable. However, considering the price, the portions were quite small even I had Yakisoba after the sushi but still didn't feel full. Got takeout for someone's birthday dinner, so I can't speak to the dine-in experience. We got a few rolls to split -- all were exactly what you'd expect. The guy who took our order was awesome. An old menu we found online showed they carried unagi donburi, but the more recent menus no longer showed it as an option. The guy we spoke to on the phone to place our order was awesome -- he told us he could make anything we wanted so, alas, we got an unagi donburi. It was also tasty, but nothing you wouldn't expect. The udon we got was really good and felt like the most unique thing we had ordered, however, it was a little on the salty side. Ordered a few standard rolls, and while the tempura shrimp was definitely pre-cooked and the quality of the rolling itself quite poor (the shape was inconsistent and the rice was barely sticking to the roll at times), the taste was great! Heard a lot of good things about Mom's and popped in on a Thursday. Restaurant was about half full and they let me choose my booth. Decor and style is typical Hilo. Nothing fancy just booths and chairs. Ordered the omakase sushi platter and a couple extra nigiri pieces. The good came out quickly, the fish was decent quality for the price and the service was great. The server came to check on our table multiple times to fill up water and see how we liked the good. Came in on a Friday night for me and my daughter's weekly dinner date. The staff was very welcoming & the layout of the restaurant was perfect. I tucked my daughter's stroller and myself in the back corner as they offered to have me sit wherever was open. I started off with a miso soup which has the option to be spicy. I have never tried something like this but it was so delicious! The flavor is like no other and the miso is fresh and doesn't have the instant miso taste. I got a sake margarita as a beverage, another item I have never tried before or seen at another restaurant. The amount of alcohol was perfect. The negitoro roll was perfect. The omakase chef choice was also amazing. Every piece was fresh and soooo delicious. The hamachi carpaccio was amazing as well. I have been waiting for a good sushi place in Hilo that doesn't require a reservation a year in advance haha and I finally found it. Wonderful dinner experience all round. This cozy place has the right lighting, great music and a peaceful vibe. Our waitress was attentive and so nice to us. We took a decent tour of the menu. If you are going to take photos of your food I suggest you do it before picking up your chopsticks because once you put the first bite in your mouth you aren't likely to put your chopsticks down. We had sake, beer, seaweed salad, the unagi roll, a couple pieces of melt in your mouth hottegai, the carpaccio, the ume shiso roll, a few additional pieces of sushi. The food was amazing as usual! Sushi on point. Yakisoba was great! Really enjoyed the Black Sesame ice-cream, but my favorite was the lilikoi ice-cream. Hubby had a "bottomless house sake (cold). He's Samoan and wanted to yell Bonzai by the last couple cups! The sake margarita was also very delicious and complemented my baked Cali roll. The ambiance reminded me of a sushi or ramen restaurant in Japan and everyone including Chef Aaron and owner Yuta was very welcoming. Our waitress was great and even gave us recommendations on what sake to drink the next time we visit. Went home stuffed and most of all papa really enjoyed his meal. Only downside is we parked in an empty lot next to the restaurant and was not aware that it was a private lot, so we got a ticket for $61.50 that really killed our excellent evening. Maybe the restaurant may want to get with property owner to see if they can have patrons waive the parking fee w/a meal at the restaurant or advise customer that there is a charge. We didn't see the sign because it was during the evening and there was no light in the area and tons of cars parked there. That's the only complaint I had. read more

This was not included in out list to grab meal here. Because most restaurants in Hilo closes at 9pm we are forced to dine here. And fortunately t'was a surprise for us. We were greeted upon entering. Menu was handed to us and it's not extensive which I somehow like it. The staff is pretty nice and efficient and did check on us thrice which I appreciate. FOOD: Mixed Salad ($7), comes with assorted vegetables of the season with Japanese Sesame Dressing. It was full of flavor and with the price, it's a bit generous for one person. Texture is pretty good and love the bowl presentation. You gotta grab this! Yakitori Bites ($8), chicken bites made in yakitori style. It was tasty! The best yakitori that I ever had in Hawaii. plate presentation is professionally done. The best ever! Saucy and its meat is tender. Very appetizing indeed! Smashed Q ($5), cucumber with original garlic dressing is superb! You gotta grab this too!everything on this plate is wrapped with flavor and goodness. Tan Tan Noodle ($12), noodles falvored with sesame paste topped with miso ground pork & spring onion. Full of flavor and tasty. A bit salty though but still good! It's a soupless noodle and I seldom have one. This one really hit the spot! Char Siu Noodle ($15), noodles flavored with shoyu sauce topped with 8 pcs of char siu & vegetables. The best! Bandit did enjoy his soupless bowl. He love it that he don't want to share his. LoL. Flavorful and tasty as well. The noodles are cooked just right! Highly recommended by the bandits! You won't regret. Their menu are simple and straightforward. Price is reasonable as well. This may be a bar half bar place to chill but this is pretty good to grab kines here. Whoa!!! We found this awesome place while walking around Downtown Hilo. Read the Yelp reviews about udon without broth. That's exactly what it is but you don't need the broth because the sauce is amazing!!! This is a small establishment run buy a young guy. Sushi bar seating, a long bistro table in the center, and a few booths and tables along the sides. Great college vibe with reggae music playing in the background. We didn't have reservations but luckily they were able to seat us. Then all of a sudden, the place was packed! The waitress, Lindsey, recommended everything that we ordered and she did not disappoint! She was also super friendly and cool. This is what we ordered: Miso pork roll - The miso flavor is soooo good, we ordered another one. Char Siu roll - Another popular sushi roll with roasted pork Tan Tan Noodles with Ajitama Egg - Our favorite!! It is a dry udon dish with the miso sauce. So flavorful and delicious, we ordered another bowl. You have the choice of hot or cold noodles, and different spice levels. Veggie Noodles - These noodles can be hot or cold. We ordered this one cold. A green salad and a nice assortment of veggies sat on top of the noodles with the dressing on the bottom. Make sure you mix everything in the bowl to get the noodles coated because that dressing is so delicious too! Ahi Misopaccio - Wow! It's like a tuna tartar with avocado, mac nuts all sitting on a sea of miso! Fantastic!!! Hamachi Carpaccio - thin slices of hamachi with jalapeño and a drop of spice. Also very good. We stopped in after a day of hiking waterfalls. We were famished by the time the sun set. We had all the vegetarian items. My kids (age 4 and 6) inhaled 3 bowls of edamame. Soupless ramen? SAY WHAAAT. Count me in! When I heard about this place having soupless ramen, I knew I had to drag some friends with me to try this place out. It took over the old location of Kanpai (rip, didn't get a chance to try it sad) in Downtown. I'm not too sure on whether they have stalls in this parking lot area.... but there are street parking around the area though limited. My roommate and I both got the soupless tantanmen as hot noodles (choice of hot or cold) and spicy level (choice of no spicy or spicy). The dish had the minced pork with cucumbers and seasoned beansprouts and carrots topped over the flavored noodles. It almost looked like a bibimbap with the same concept of mixing everything together. Loved the vegetables! They were seasoned nicely like a tinge of sweetness. The noodles were thick with a soft and chewy texture. The flavor of the entire dish, though, was the winner. It was perfectly seasoned with a creeping spiciness as I continued to eat. This dish really tested my current spice tolerance which definitely is lowering. I tried their shoyu one with char siu and ajitama egg on another day with no spicy, and it did not disappoint. Delicious! Just a tad too salty at the end. I enjoyed their soupless ramen. My other friends for the salad which had a delicious dressing with a tinge of sweetness; the chicken yakitori donburi which was also sweetish and seasoned really nicely (delicious); and the char siu donburi which was thinly cut with a delicious sauce on top. The presentation on the char siu donburi was amazing and the pork wasn't over cooked with just the perfect chew to it. All my friends, including myself, really enjoyed our time here. This newly opened restaurant is definitely going to be a regular place for me soon! Portions are big and prices aren't that bad. read more

Really great casual Japanese with a cozy atmosphere and excellent options for both meat eaters and vegtarians. A touch salty, but it feels like the big island leans a bit salty in general, so compared to some places it's actually pretty restrained. Now I've lived here in Hilo for years and have eaten at all of the sushi areas this side of the island has had to offer for the past 15 years. Mom's Hilo is the BEST and it is literally my Mother's FAVORITE restaurant she's ever been to. They have held some of the best events I have been to in Hilo. The night activities at this place are action! Open cypher and DJing on Friday nights and great selection of drinks to keep the party going. The sushi chefs are the real deal, you can tell they put alot of time into making a unique menu that is a nice balance of traditional Japanese Cuisine and French style preparation blended in a way that screams high-end luxury and is only available here in Hilo. This type of food is something you can only expect out one of Maui's most awarded chefs Ahren Uyeda in his most crucial element, Sushi. This is Hilo's little portal to Japan, something not too ambitious but also not short on creativity by any means. The most unique dishes I've never seen in any other sushi place are housed right in this restaurant including options like their popular "Baked California Roll", a totally different take on the well known American classic, and a tasty and surprising Sous Vide Chicken on real ramen noodles in a beautifully golden tasty broth humbly named "Yakitori Chicken Noodles". But that only scratches the surface of the mastery in Mom's Kitchen. One of the most exciting items I've ever ordered was their signature "Da Bomb" roll. A great take on tempura sushi with a Hawaiian Style twist. The chef and sous chef really shine in this restaurant, It is amazing to watch them make your food right in front of you while you wait for your meal. I can't name a better place to go out for sushi during dinner, But as everyone says I too wish that they were open for Lunch! Service can be a little bit of a wait on some days especially when they get busy towards the end of the week, but you can always put in a reservation which I have found to work nicely!
