Now I've lived here in Hilo for years and have eaten at all of the sushi areas this side of the island has had to offer for the past 15 years. Mom's Hilo is the BEST and it is literally my Mother's FAVORITE restaurant she's ever been to. They have held some of the best events I have been to in Hilo. The night activities at this place are action! Open cypher and DJing on Friday nights and great selection of drinks to keep the party going. The sushi chefs are the real deal, you can tell they put alot of time into making a unique menu that is a nice balance of traditional Japanese Cuisine and French style preparation blended in a way that screams high-end luxury and is only available here in Hilo. This type of food is something you can only expect out one of Maui's most awarded chefs Ahren Uyeda in his most crucial element, Sushi. This is Hilo's little portal to Japan, something not too ambitious but also not short on creativity by any means. The most unique dishes I've never seen in any other sushi place are housed right in this restaurant including options like their popular "Baked California Roll", a totally different take on the well known American classic, and a tasty and surprising Sous Vide Chicken on real ramen noodles in a beautifully golden tasty broth humbly named "Yakitori Chicken Noodles". But that only scratches the surface of the mastery in Mom's Kitchen. One of the most exciting items I've ever ordered was their signature "Da Bomb" roll. A great take on tempura sushi with a Hawaiian Style twist. The chef and sous chef really shine in this restaurant, It is amazing to watch them make your food right in front of you while you wait for your meal. I can't name a better place to go out for sushi during dinner, But as everyone says I too wish that they were open for Lunch! Service can be a little bit of a wait on some days especially when they get busy towards the end of the week, but you can always put in a reservation which I have found to work nicely! The food was pretty good, but the wait to get our food was RIDICULOUS. The restaurant was about half full, there were two wait staff, and three cooks that we could see. We got our appetizer 20 minutes after ordering, kappa maki 40 minutes after ordering, and noodles ONE HOUR after ordering. We were there for about an hour and fifteen minutes. We ordered a smashed cucumber appetizer, kappa maki, tan tan noodle, char siu noodle, and veggie noodle. The smashed cucumbers were good -- a little spicier than I've had before. Tan tan noodle was tasty enough, but I wouldn't order it again since the ground pork wasn't especially flavored, and kind of falls off and ends up in a saucy slurry at the end. Veggie noodles were light and refreshing. If you want to go somewhere to hang out with people and chat forever, this place is great. If you're hungry and want to eat, I don't recommend this restaurant. read more

I've been to Mom's three different times in 2 years. Each time with a different experience. First time I went around 5:30 with Lindsey as our server. The specials were written on a chalk board. We sat at the tall table overlooking the food being prepared. There were maybe 2 other tables with people. Lindsay recommended the specials and smashed q salad. We ordered beers and the ahi misopacchio, ahi carpacchio, smashed q salad. The ahi misopacchio was so damn good we immediately ordered one more. The Sapporo beer was super cold. We also ordered the oyster shooters, more beer, cali roll. They were so yummy. Ended up ordering Veggie noodles with ajitama egg and charsiu pork, my son ordered the unagi sushi and tan tan noodles. We shoulda stopped at the oyster shooters but the party vibe was too good, pumping reggae and jazz, cold beer. By 6:30 the place was packed. We went early and had excellent service! There were many takeout orders since it was just opening up after covid. Second time 2 weeks later I went with hubby at 7:30. The place was packed, seeing that there were 2 food preppers, we knew the wait was gonna be long, but we went in expecting to have cold beers and sake and didn't mind waiting for our food. We ordered the tantan noodles and veggie noodles, and started with shoyu garlic edamame. Holly was our server, she informed us that the food was going to take longer since there were many takeout orders. The drinks, crowd, ambience at the later hour was a good first date kinda place, where you could talk to each other while sipping on your drink, and being able to enjoy the music. We just went to Mom's this Monday. We went at 4:30, son, daughter, her hubs, 2 year old son, my hubs, his sister. Ordered everything early hamachi carpachio 2x, sushis, our noodle dishes, sake coolers, beers. Good thing! There was live Hawaiian reggae music at 6:00, then wham! The place was so full! Again, there were many takeout orders, orders by later diners took a little more time. The food was delicious like the first and second times I went. If you want fast food, then go to that other sushi place at the mall. The menu at Mom's is simple. But what you'll get is fresh fish and noodle dishes that are prepared with love and unlike the expensive, expansive sushi bars, or the automated mall sushi place. Our waitress was more on the shy side and we had to wave her down several times. You have choices. Your experience will be determined by your expectations. We had 3 different experiences the 3 times we went to Mom's. But if you go late, expect to have a cold beer or sake, chill, enjoy the music, the person you're with and the food! We had their Sushi Fresh Local Avocado Roll - which was light abd refreshing Smashed Q salad - very tasty and definitely delicious We both picked something from their Huihui Noodles I tried their Char Siu Noodle - noodles flavored with Shoyu Sayand topped with fresh vegetables- also very tasty My boyfriend had their Tan Tan Noodles - noodles flavored with sesame paste, topped with Miso ground pork (I loved the flavor) and topped with fresh vegetables Definitely will go back and try more of their sushi rolls and the Chef Specials. Best noodles in hilo! Just stopped in and tried their tan tan noodles. The ground miso pork had a TON of flavor, the noodles were thick and chewy (I wouldn't be surprised if they were made from scratch), and it came with a side of thick spicy miso broth that was absolutely killer. I got it with an ajitama egg, and man this thing is just an umami bomb.. Can't wait to come back and try the other things they have here! read more

One of our very favorite spots to eat in Hilo!! We came across it by accident one day when we were looking for a place to eat, and were so happy we did! We loved this place so much, we went there twice during our stay. Nothing fancy at all, it's a small and casual Japanese, sushi and fusion place. But there was live music on a guitar in the corner, the menu was creative and delicious, and the fish very fresh. Vegetation choices much better than most places, very fresh ingredients and flavorful. The wait staff was welcoming, willing to make suggestions, awesome experience all the way around. Love supporting local small businesses - and so great when they get it right. When we are traveling, we crave places that serve fresh, healthy food. TLDR: This was honestly one of the worst restaurant service experiences I've ever had. I wouldn't recommend this spot at all. I was appalled by the poor service, the wait times are absolutely ridiculous, and food is subpar. All of the people in our party felt sick after eating here. First, we arrived and waited 20 min for seating. It was fine, we understood that there weren't many tables available... but then it got even worse. We had looked at the menu during the wait so we knew what we wanted to order the minute we were seated. We gave our order, 4 bowls of noodles, an appetizer, and a beer. It took 20+ minutes for them to bring our drink (a canned beer). We had to remind the waitress about the drinks twice. The service was so slow and the waitress was forgetful and unapologetic. Our food order took over an hour to arrive to our table. The appetizer showed up after 50 minutes of waiting. Once we got the food, it arrived lukewarm with the noodles stuck together in a sticky mass. If I could give 0 out of 5 I would, but I appreciate the effort that the chef put in, since he was acutely aware of how long everything was taking. He added a complimentary soup and egg to the order. For that kindness alone, this spot gets 1 star. Sadly, one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. It's so disappointing since this place seemed promising. read more

We had an excellent dinner at Moms. Nice atmosphere with tasty offerings. We went on a week night, so maybe it was quieter than usual. It was a great change from some of the other crowded and noisy restaurants. I started with the mixed salad which was one of the best salads I've had in Hilo. I also had the Tan Tan Ramen with pork. The dry noodles were different, but full of flavor! My wife had the Veggie Noodles and loved it! This is our new and favorite restaurant! We didn't wait too long for our meals and didn't mind. I think the food was carefully prepared with good umami and I don't always like to be rushed out at restaurants. We'll be back to enjoy some of the other dishes. read more

We arrived maybe just past 5pm. Friendly staff, everyone behind the counter welcomed us (and I was surprised when everyone also noticed when we were leaving and stopped what they were doing briefly to say goodbye). We were celebrating a birthday between the two of us and started with the smashed 'cukes, which were very well seasoned and SUPER crunchy. I don't think I ever tasted such crunch, seemed like those 'cukes just came out a very cold fridge. I was delighted by the texture. The pork roll was hefty! Definitely a two bite roll. Our drinks were great, I ordered 2 rounds of the Sakura Sours, made with Suntory Whiskey Toki (I think). Our warm bowls of Tan Tan 'noods and Chicken Donburri were comforting. My 'noods were ordered 'spicy' but I didn't notice strong spice or heat, but it was still tasty. Since we were still working on 2nd drinks we decided to order carpaccio, I think it was ahi? I was expecting thin slices but we got generous triangles. My husband loved it! I thought all the menu prices were so reasonable and comparably similar establishments charge more. First time going to Moms since Kanpai closed. Everything we got was excellent. The tan tan dry was delicious, although I ordered spicy and could have used a lot more hot. The ahi carpaccio was insanely good but because it's a special you don't know the price off hand (it was $18, which is a lot more than most / all of the listed dishes on their menu), but it was worth it -- the cuts of fish were so buttery soft.
