Got takeout for someone's birthday dinner, so I can't speak to the dine-in experience. We got a few rolls to split -- all were exactly what you'd expect. The guy who took our order was awesome. An old menu we found online showed they carried unagi donburi, but the more recent menus no longer showed it as an option. The guy we spoke to on the phone to place our order was awesome -- he told us he could make anything we wanted so, alas, we got an unagi donburi. It was also tasty, but nothing you wouldn't expect. The udon we got was really good and felt like the most unique thing we had ordered, however, it was a little on the salty side. Overall a great experience and a great addition to the Japanese food scene in Hilo

Perfectly decent sushi! Ordered a few standard rolls, and while the tempura shrimp was definitely pre-cooked and the quality of the rolling itself quite poor (the shape was inconsistent and the rice was barely sticking to the roll at times), the taste was great! My favorite was the torched salmon -- you can never go wrong with aburi!

One Word! OUTSTANDING! Excellent offerings! Love the Sushi! I've told many people about this place. I am so glad a friend recommended it to me. The restaurant offers Great Ambiance it's a small intimate experience, it feels like you've been transported to Japan! Everything on the menu is excellent especially their Sushi Offerings! The folks there are so gracious and charming! It's a must go to place! It will become your favorite spot! I just wish they were open for lunch!

We were surprised that Moms wasn't super busy on a Saturday. We walked in & were seated right away. The service was pretty good. Everyone seemed really nice. The only thing I would've appreciated was a refill on our water/drinks. No one came to ask and our waters were empty for a while. We opted for sushi rolls. They were pretty tasty. The rolls ranged anywhere from $6 - $25. I really enjoyed the ume shisho roll. It was so bright and refreshing. It's a cute little cozy place. We enjoyed our time and food. I would go again!

We went roughly an hour before closing, got seated right away. Servers were great and on it! We ordered a hamachi jalapeño roll, da bomb roll and Yakitori Chicken Noodles Hot but not-spicy. Food came out pretty quickly as we can see the chef's preparing all foods right behind the bar. Everything tasted great and hit the spot. We also had a beer each, came with a cold glass, perfect just how we like it.

Cute place and good service. The food just wasn't doing the most for me, I got simple rolls and they were kinda pricey. The special rolls were averaging about $25. For the not the best selection and kinda pricey, this place just wasn't for me.

Over priced sushi combo for $55, the fish pieces are small and some purposely cut diagonally to make it smaller piece.

Small sashimi combo overpriced for $55. Some pieces purposely cut in diagonally into smaller pieces and purposely put on top of a big ice bowl to make the fish pieces look bigger. Not worth it. In addition, when the waiter brought the sushi to the table, without asking he immediately turn the prettier side of the sushi set toward my husband when i was the one who ordered the sushi. When my husband asked for a take out box, the waiter walked over and handed me the box directly as if all women/wives should pack left over food. Very sexist and offensive.

Brought two friends with me who had never been to Mom's before. They absolutely loved it. It was a very busy evening and they were short staffed, but still took good care of all their customers and the food came out delicious and hot. I have a yakitori noodles with chicken and my friend had the tan tan noodles and my other friend had some sushi. They loved it! I'm happy to see a small business thriving. I'm adding some more pictures.

We had an amazing vegan dish here for our little brunch we did in mid morning earlier today…read more We saw this restaurant yesterday when we were browsing Hilo a few nights ago. We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

We spent two and a half months planning this event. My club treasurer and I confirmed the price on seven different occasions--five times over the phone and twice in person. Each time, we were quoted just over $600 with about a $110 in tips, which we paid in full two days before the party. However, the day before the event, we were told there was a miscalculation and we needed to pay another $400. Because our students had only fundraised the amount we were originally quoted, we had to remove two people from our party and downgrade our menu which did not include drinks anymore. We requested to bring our own drinks due to the last-minute budget change, but we were told we could "only bring alcohol and no outside sodas and juices." It was disappointing that this was the only accommodation offered to a group of high school students. During the party, we also encountered several cleanliness issues. We found hair in the food and cockroaches in the rice, as well as on the walls and near the buffet area. I am totally not joking about the food; I was shocked by what we saw. The servers were very polite and apologized when we let them know, but it was a major concern for us. I understand that accidents happen, but this was a very difficult situation for our club after so much careful planning. Personally, I will not be eating here again for a long time.

The reviews sold me. And then... reality arrived. The server was lovely but clearly trapped in a one-person reenactment of Kitchen Nightmares. Two of us ordered dinner at the same time. My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. That said--I'm a generous soul. They need a chance to redeem what was, without exaggeration, a masterclass in how not to run dinner service.
