    Awesome place

Came past this place over a dozen times, Walked through. Never tried but I am happy I did. I had the cold soba noodles, the tekka maki , and cali roll. All server up quickly and with a smile on the faces of people making the food. Definitely going back to try more on the limited menu.

First ate here in 2012, it's still good in 2025! The sesame seeds on outside of the rolls was a nice additional flavor. Fresh natural ginger and strong shoyu is appreciated!!! Place closes at 3pm. Glad I was in town early today. Can't wait to return!

Inside out rolls: warabi, shrimp/avocado. Small rolls: hamachi green onion.

Been awhile since I came here but had to come back after reading they made the nations top 100 sushi spots! Super nice "mom and pop shop" located in downtown Hilo. Tucked away right next to the busy farmer's market. Parking: is always a bit of a struggle, especially on the weekends, but its well worth it. Drive around the block a few times and you should get lucky. If not there is a free big lot accross the street closer to the ocean side. You just have to cross the protected highway. Located in the back of a suite with other food shops. Food: They are unique in that they use brown rice as their starch for their sushi. Very straight forward, fresh, natural flavors. Going back I tried the warabi (a local wild fern). It was very good! A very mild flavor but an extremely unique firm but soft texture. My other favorite is any dish with shrimp. I absoultely love that their shrimp is sort of steamed vs fried. They also have shrimp tempura as an option if you personally prefer that. They offer straight forward rolls, nigiri, handrolls and bowls. Service: The worker's/owner's are very kind people. They make everything to order so please be patient. As a suggestion, just put your order in and hop next door to the market while they are preparing it. Side note: find the stall with the fresh coconut milk drink, perfect accompaniment! One small hitch is that I wish they offered the poke on the side because it looks so good in the poke bowl, but they couldn't make that accomodation. I would have been happy to pay at market price. Other than that they are great.

I have been here dozens of times, the food is always, without fail top notch. They run a tight and very efficient ship. My kind of place, no frills, just perfect cuts of fish served over tender grains of rice. The fish is beautiful, succulent, each like a delicate pane of stained glass. I've made everyone I know come here. Must try if you're in Hilo

Great service and we called to place an order for pick up right before 3pm when they closed and they accommodated. I wish I could have tried the poke. I'd go back and try more things on the menu.

It's okay that it's tiny and cheaper ($13) than others but probably not for everyone.. you might still be hungry after this. The quality was good.

The sushi was really really good, the store is conveniently located in a food court with tables, and we got our food quickly after ordering!

Found this gem of a sushi joint last month on our family trip to the big island. I have had sushi all over the world, worked in Japan, and had some of the finest sushi on the planet. This sushi blew my mind and ranks amongst the best I have ever had. My family was just as blown away and they have eaten a lot of good sushi. True traditional Japanese brown rice sushi from Hirosh and his wonderful wife. If you are in Hilo and want to get the best sushi on the island look no further. Prices were great. Don't come for the ambience, come for the pure sushi experience. Understated but world class. You can thank me later.

Delicious and healthy sushi made with brown rice located in Hilo town near the Hilo Farmers Market. Prices are reasonable. Inside dining tables 6 ft apart are available. Had the inside Ahi Avocado roll and a couple of their specialty hand rolls.

Don't be dissuaded by the slightly dilapidated appearance! This place is DELICIOUS! Will definitely come back for more. The fish is very fresh and delicious. My fiancé and I were fighting about who was eating more. Definitely make a stop while in Hilo, even if only for an appetizer. :)

-Located in small food center -Grilled Salmon Avocado rolls were very dry and lacked flavor -Shrimp Tempura rolls were decent, but not out of the ordinary -Friend really enjoyed her hand roll! -Overall, quick service (tables nearby to sit and eat); decent sushi but would not go out of my way to eat here

Is the sushi authentic Japanese style with rice wine vinegar and sugar seasoned rice? Not a fan of the plain white rice served at most purported sushi restaurants here in the islands.

I'm not completely sure but I know they serve brown rice only

Despite the parking lot being quite full, there was still plenty of parking available, and we were seated right away. The menu had lots of options, which made it hard to decide what to order. I went with the Okinawa roll (shrimp tempura and spicy crabmeat inside, deep fried with eel sauce and mayo). My coworkers ordered the Big Island roll and the chirashi don, and they both loved their meals. My Okinawa roll tasted delicious, but it was a little too oily for me - probably wouldn't order it again. The tea I ordered also tasted very watered down, which was disappointing. Service was quick to take our orders, but my food came out way after my coworkers' dishes. Understandable since mine had to be fried, but I ended up awkwardly watching them eat while I waited for my meal to arrive. Overall, a decent sushi spot with good options - just be mindful of what you order and expect some timing issues if you're ordering different types of dishes.

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

The menu felt very "meh"...nothing particularly exciting or memorable. The cocktails looked great in photos, so we ordered the piña colada flight, but it tasted like there was little to no rum in it. Pretty presentation, but very mediocre overall. Food was just okay. The burger wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The fried shrimp dish was disappointing and lacked flavor. The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. Not terrible, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. The staff were all very nice though. Service friendly.

(I've attended speaker programs there, for example.) Tonight, we were down the few steps right past the restrooms, near the koi pond, and got to help sing happy birthday to someone during dinner! (FYI The staff really do sing well!) Chenoa's service was cheerful and bubbly, thank you so much! And she really tried to help me choose my entree ('cause the Hilo peeps all knew what they wanted, while the townie from Honolulu couldn't make up her mind amongst the many choices). We enjoyed calamari with their yummy sauce (with just a tad of a kick), escargot, salads, cocktails (some peeps), an array of entrees, and of course, desserts! Entrees included bacon wrapped scallops with pasta, shrimp with pasta, miso salmon, tekka maki and salad, and I was so happy with the furukake salmon that I finally chose! Some of us opted in for the $7 addition of soup (last night it was carrot ginger which I also would have loved, or salad (which I chose for the greens), and a warm bread with butter. Desserts included an affogato, mango lychee sorbet, sorbet trio (of mango lychee, raspberry, and pineapple), and a scoop of the kona mud pie ice cream. Everything was delicious and some had leftovers, perfect for lunch the next day! (And of course, Chenoa brought a clean cup of teriyaki sauce for that take out serving!) I also love that they keep a carafe of ice and water on tables with groups-so we could refill our glasses constantly. Oh, and mahalo to the owner who visited us, and helped sing happy birthday to our fellow guest. (Sorry, I didn't catch his name.)
