We enjoyed our first time visit at this cute little hole in the wall downtown in Hilo. The waitress was very friendly and our food came in so quickly at our table within minutes. We loved our banh mi sandwich-enough for two to share. Also the oxtail soup was tasty flavorful broth with a large serving of veggies and noodles. Prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants. Just what you need especially on a rainy day In Hilo. We were too stuffed although there is also cheesecake and pies were offered. We'll definitely be back to this place in our next Hilo town visit.

Delicious, great price and excellent service. We ordered the vegetarian pho and it was the only location that offered a fully veggie broth that included protein (tofu) plus many delicious veggies including cabbage, zucchini and mustard greens! The location is challenging to find but it's worth it if you're able to walk a little longer or drive. All of this was packaged for us in a compostable recycled box. Thank you!

    Beef stew pho

I was tempted to try the spicy version of the beef stew pho (available - you just have to ask for it.) But, I let my better senses prevail and went with the regular, not spicy. Excellent taste. Huge! Will try the spicy version next time. Definitely recommended.

    Food

I have never been here before. But definitely never returning. I was sick and bought chicken pho from pho 19. I usually go to Pho Viet but I couldn't today. It wasn't terrible, but as I was finishing up I was greeted with two eyes and a couple of legs. Yup, bug in my food. I went back and politely asked for a refund and was gaslighted. I had initially spoke to a worker who then directed me to the owner (an elderly woman). I had felt bad having to explain to her that there was a roach in my food. I didn't want to embarrass her- I'm always supporting local businesses. But I'd assume they'd want to know to take better precautions, or so I thought. I had shown her the video evidence of the bug and she initially asked the kitchen to remake my chicken pho. But I wanted a refund. I asked for one again and she denied it. She told me there's "no roaches in her kitchen" and it's a "French onion". I had then responded to her politely and explained that she was wrong. It was indeed a bug. In order to get my full refund of $22. 1 chicken pho and spring rolls... she told me to bring my rubbish back. So I left and came back. She still tried to deny my refund. I was then recorded and verbally harassed. I was told I'm a "young kid causing trouble". Asked for my refund yet again, explaining that all I want is my money back for both items. Who knew if the spring rolls had bugs in them too? I was then called a "hustler" multiple times buy the first worker who greeted me. The owner accused me of putting BUGS in my own food to cause trouble. I told her I didn't want to cause a scene, she yelled at me and told me I was. As I continued to ask for my money back (all while being recorded) she finally gave back my $22. This was the worst restaurant experience ever. Ive never been treated with so much disrespect.

All I can say is that I can't wait to go back to try other things from the menu. Good service & yummy food!! We went on a Wednesday evening- not overly busy. We got seated right away and was serviced within minutes I guess their Oxtail soup is very good..always sold out..so they suggested that we call first to check if they still have.. this also goes for the Beef stew pho

    Large Pho

Very bad customer service, and we waited for one hour for the food to come out of the kitchen. We ordered 3 Pho, but it didn't come with any beef, meatballs, nor sprouts. DONT WALK IN! YOU WILL WAIT AN HOUR!!

Beef broth was delicious and the noodles were cooked perfectly! Beef cold vermicelli noodles was my fave, not a ton of flavor on the beef but everything else was very fresh and hit the spot! Bahn mi didn't have the crisp on the bread I was expecting but still a good sandwich. Great service!

So happy to find authentic Vietnamese pho! Very comforting soup. Don't miss out on the Korean fried chicken. Flavors are amazing!

We were brought by this Chinese travel agent to the restaurant for lunch. The customer service was terrible. After we sat down, the waitress came to our table and dumped two half glasses of water without talking to or asking us what to drink. We ordered seafood Pho and I literally only found three shrimps and one piece of squid in a big bowl of broth. While we were still eating the waitress placed the bill on the table BEFORE I asked for it. She never asked if our food was ok or if we needed anything else. It feels like you have a meal at a canteen in a Chinese prison, get your meal, eat quickly, behave and leave without uttering a word. The situation changed only when the waitress saw the tip and chased me to the door, she brought out her calculator and told me that in the Big Island, you have to give 20% tip regardless of the poor service. Tips are a reward for good service, not a way to bring in money to run the restaurant. I usually tip 25% for adequate service. I have never been treated with so much disrespect in a restaurant and will never go back there. I'm not sure what kind of kickbacks the travel agent has worked out with the restaurant. It seems everyone else in the group tour, especially the non English speakers were either required or forced to give 20% tip. Just imagine if this is your first time in Hawaii, it would make you think Hawaiian is like gangster in North Korea where you have no human rights and have to cooperate in the nasty business.

BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo.

Located on the University of Hilo's campus, this seemingly farm to table restaurant has a lot to offer. We ordered the House Salad, Fried Kalo, Fresh catch (Opah/moonfish) over noodles, and fish over Bolognese. We went extra on the fish as we've been eating a bit heavy and some lighter seafood was in order during our Hilo trip. We also got the pickled mango martini and sangria. Everything was very fresh, with local produce making up the crisp salad and delicious pan fried fish over yakisoba style noodles. The fried kalo is definitely different, as it's hard to describe not being a potato, with a different texture being crispy, yet fluffy and starchy on the inside. If you like fried potatoes, its worth trying. The fish over Bolognese had some conflicting flavors, but the fish was again tasty and fresh. Both drinks were quite citrusy, with the mango martini being a bit too tart for me. Staff was polite and efficient. Live music also happens, but it adds to the atmosphere rather than taking over. Reservations can made online and there's plenty of parking.
