Order a Banh Mi Special for lunch. Nothing really special about it. There was barely any protein in it. For the price it was a shorty 7-8" bread. Did not taste any pate in it. It was savory, with large pieces of chicken and was accompanied by a good amount of fresh basil and bean sprouts. My boyfriend ordered the kalbi beef plate and said it was really tasty. It's a hole in the wall location, but very clean and bright. It's quite affordable for what you get. I'm definitely coming back to try out the other dishes on menu. The food is well presented - though for the rice plate the portion is relatively small. Having said that the reasonable pricing is probably reflective of the portions. As Americans we just eat too much! These portions are probably more correct! We enjoyed the Grilled Pork Rice Plate, the Grilled Beef sandwich, Spring Rolls and a Vietnamese ice coffee. I phoned in an order for Pho Tai Nam x5, Pho Bo Vien, and Pho Tai Bo Vien. I picked up the order only to find out the order was wrong once I got home. I ended up getting Pho Tai Nam x6 and Pho Nam. They left out the meatballs. I called back letting them know. I have 4 hungry kids and I had taken out all the containers ready to prepare to make the bowls when I called back. The cashier said I had to return all the food back so he can inspect; instead of me driving back to pick up the meatballs. My wife and I had to repack everything back into the bags. We drove back in the heavy rain. When we got back to the restaurant, the kitchen guy went to inspect. I told them there's nothing to inspect, we were missing the meatballs. The kitchen guy said that I only had to bring the receipt, but they already had a copy of the same receipt I had also brought back. He proceeded to open every container like we were lying about our orders. He goes back into the kitchen to put in the few meatballs that he never included. Like for the trouble we went through to drive all the way back in the heavy rain, he could have thrown in more than 2.5 meatballs. If it weren't for 4 hungry kids, I would have just returned all the food for a refund. There wasn't much food to begin with. Really love this place. It's a cute "hole in the wall" place serving authentic Vietnamese dishes. It's a limited menu but the dishes are really yummy and tasty. My husband and I tried the beef and pork roll, meatball pho, van special and Philly cheesesteak banh mi. All of it was really delicious. I come here for the Satay Beef Noodle soup. The first time I had it my mind was blown. Something unique and delicious that I cannot find elsewhere in Hilo! The broth was spicy and rich, the noodles chewy and al dente - YUM! Then the next time I came to eat them, the noodles had changed. The owner said these were supposed to be better, more fresh. But they didn't taste as good, unless they were over cooked and too soft? I'll give it another try. I hope they can be consistent with their dishes. I don't care for their grilled pork, the meat quality isn't great and it tasted charred and dry. Nothing special about their shrimp spring rolls, and they don't offer fried egg rolls which is a bummer. Very clean inside, brand new decor. This place has potential!
