This is a fish market so you can get fresh fish and poke at competitive prices. They close at 3:00 p.m. so they're usually busy and it does attract tourists as well. We went on a Monday afternoon and there was a couple of people in front of us and a small line forming behind us. The employee that helped us was friendly, patient and helped us sample many different pokes, answered our questions and made helpful suggestions. I got the shoyu and Korean poke, and my friend got the Korean Marlin. Decent portions and you know it's fresh. Great place for poke bowls. read more

Seriously, poke doesn't get any better than this. Fresh caught fish, prepared and served in front of you in an authentic fish market. It was so fresh and tasty. Back home they always crowd the poke bowl with toppings and sauces, but they don't need to do that here. The fish shines all by itself! There was a number of poke choices, and they let sample them too. I particularly enjoyed the "hurricane" ono. It was so tender and flavorful with a zesty aioli sauce mixed in. The rice was mixed with furikake and had the perfect texture and flavor to pair with the fish. This is a grab n go spot, so don't expect tables or service. Just grab your bowl and go sit out in nature! There's beautiful ocean views right outside the door. read more

Really enjoyed this place! Super fresh fish. It's a fish market so it's not much of a restaurant and there's not really designated tables or seating, but there are so many options for poke. The sides and some of the fish options have different prices, but the staff was kind to explain it to us and let us try some of the poke before we chose our flavors. We wanted to try something other than ahi because we've had a lot of ahi in the last week, so the marlin was a great option. Loved the Marlin Magic flavor! The spicy crab salad was $10/lb so we got 1/2 lb as a side since that's not included with the two scoop price (~$18 for 2 scoops of rice and 2 scoops of fish). Great fresh fish, super solid poke spot! read more

This is some of the best fresh poke you can get in the Hawaiian islands. It's only open 9-3 PM. There is plenty of street parking. It is within walking distance of the botanical Gardens so you could have a lovely picnic. I was so excited I ate my sesame shoyu ahi poke on the way back to the hotel and it is top three I've ever had. I think the bowls are a great deal. I got two scoops of white rice with sesame ahi and I also got the second poke as spicy miso. Overall, it was like $20 for the whole bowl. My 13YO also loved his bowl. He said it was a smooth as butter. The ambience is as you would think, a Hawaiian fish market. read more

We went here wanting to be super impressed and yet today's quick takeout experience plus the quality of the food was okay-ish. We were assisted by two unenthusiastic employees who appeared being depleted in their brain power for the day. The appearance looked like that of AI bots; they looked barely humans to the point where their faces had empty stares with no facial expressions. At least they gave us several different samples for us to taste different poke marinades before we could make our final decision. Most of the poke marinades were a bit salty to my liking. In HI, seafood is super fresh and yet everything tasted satisfactory but nothing more. Well, we at least found something interesting. We tried the dry ahi tuna in a prepackaged bag which was almost $30. This was (fortunately) more than decent as we had never had anything like it in the past. If you are looking for some healthy snack which you wouldn't mind spending extra $$ then this might be what you want to pick up at Suisan. This place has the typical fish market atmosphere. As I grew up in Japan, I am used to this type of place so I knew I wasn't going to step into a fancy place. This part was okay so I had no issues with that. Well, after contemplating, my honest and frank opinion about this fish market is 3 stars at best. Oh, let's not forget, the guy at the cashier/register was polite and friendly. A big thanks to him! read more

Saw a lot of people recommend this place as the best poke in Hilo, so we decided to try it out during our visit. This place is to go orders only, you can buy poke by the pound or as a bowl with rice. The sides are sold separately by weight as well. The fish is fresh but not the softest. The pieces are cut quite big, and some pieces are kind of chewy because of that. We tried the spicy ahi and sesame ahi. The flavors are pretty good, but not amazing like other reviews I've read. The prices are reasonable if you only get the poke. If you add sides, the cost adds up real fast. Since this is a fish market, there's not seating inside. But there is a really nice park right next door with ocean view. There were plenty of tables available when we went during lunch. Could be a cute picnic date idea. read more

This small fish market is a hidden gem in Hilo. You can purchase whole locally caught fish, or grab some poke to go. The menu is pretty simple, which is the way poke should be. They serve the best poke on the island. We had the Hurricane Ono poke bowl with rice, and it was perfect as-is. You could choose additional toppings, but honestly, it doesn't need anything else. read more

Melt in your mouth poke. Came here after a local recommended it. This fish market is truly very fishy and no frills, no tables or chairs or anything. You can get poke by the pound or half pound and poke bowls, I recommend mixing and matching to try several flavors. The wasabi salmon was a truly unique flavor I will never forget, the wasabi was not too overpowering so definitely try it if you enjoy wasabi. The salmon was so vibrant and tender and every bite simply melted. The ahi tuna was excellent as well. Feel free to ask for samples first to try some different items! read more

Loved my experience at Suisan! It was mine and my husband's first time here. The employees were so kind, helpful, and patient when we were trying to figure out what to order. One of the guys helped give us a few samples and we ended up getting a poke bowl with their Ahi Hurricane and Ahi Taegu - both were delicious! There were a few tables outside and a lot of street parking. Wish we lived in Hilo so we could come here all the time. Definitely recommend if you're in the area! read more

If fresh poke is on your mind go no further. Their hours are limited as they often sell out. They are closed on Wednesday and Sundays so make sure you get your fresh poke fix before or after those day. They have street parking and I would highly recommend to go as early as possible for more choices. You can also buy fresh fish filets to create your own dishes at home. Besides that they have a frozen section to ensure you don't go without any of their delicious seafood. They have pupus, poke and sides ready to eat! Although, I got the poke bowl this trip I can't wait to return for the mixed plate poke and other treats only sold by weight and cannot be used for the poke bowl. The flavors were unique and enjoying lunch outside under a tree while listening to the water slap the wind. The store is open and clean ready for hungry customers. read more

Food: they have a wide variety of poke to choose from. My favorite was the hurricane ahi tuna poke, which was a classic spicy mayo poke with eel sauce! I don't know how I haven't tried this before, but this was heavenly. I got a two item poke bowl along with a 1/3 lb of their special seafood mix! Service: they let you sample the poke, so be sure to taste before buying. I think this is really kind to make sure you like your entire bowl Ambiance: it's like a seafood restaurant but feels really clean. They have a small shop by the cashier area where you can buy drinks, snacks, and take home some groceries. Highly recommend if you are in the area! read more

Suisan Fish Market - 3 pokes from Suisan, then two fish plates from the grill outside at the table area - Seafood Markets Near Me - Hilo, Hawaii

Suisan Fish Market is easily the best poke I've ever had. It was so crowded but the line moves by so quickly. There's a lot of staff members and it looks like their customers are regulars because everyone seemed to know exactly what they wanted and the line was moving very efficiently. There wasn't actually even a line. You just step up to the glass when you're ready to order and someone takes your order. Not only was there a lot of variety of different fishes, but there was a huge selection of the flavor/sauces each fish was seasoned with. I couldn't even tell you how many different options there were nor could I decide what I wanted. I just ended up impulsively selecting two different ones that looked and sounded good, and my husband did the same with two different ones from me. Between the 4 options that we picked, all were so good. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the options. In addition to tasting so good, the fish cuts are the biggest cuts of poke I've ever had/seen. They also serve it by the pound/half pound I believe, and they serve sides as well. I liked the refrigerated section too. There were some of the sides I wanted to order but I couldn't justify paying the prices for them, however, in the fridge section, there were some prepackaged ones that were half off if I remember correctly. I ended up buying 2 sides that I wanted but hadn't wanted to pay full price for and was so excited to see them for cheaper. Honestly I wish I had discovered Suisan Fish Market sooner. I would've liked to eaten more meals here so I could've tried more of their fishes. If I were a local, I could probably go here every day and still crave it. read more

I came in around 2pm to get a poke bowl and they were already sold out of a lot of flavors. I ended up getting salmon and a tuna with rice and no sides since it costed extra. My wife and I stopped by Suisan Fish Market before heading to the Hilo airport for one last round of poke. We ended up picking up four different items: cooked spicy crab salad, li hing mui mango, wasabi salmon poke, and soy ginger ahi poke. Of these four items, we actually enjoyed the mangos the most. The scoop of mangos we received had a variety of both sweet and soft mangos, as well as crunchy mangoes. The li hing flavoring provided just the right about of sweet, salty, and tartness to the fresh fruit. Although I'm sure the fish used in the poke was as fresh as it gets, we actually had a hard time appreciating the quality of the fish because the fish had been so heavily seasoned. We opted to not get any rice along with our poke order and that ended up being a mistake, as we were having difficulties finishing the poke with how salty each piece was. I like the variety of poke and sides available at Suisan Fish Market, but I can't say it's the best poke I've had during my trip. read more

This is the to-go place to get poke in Hilo. This is a poke shop near the Liliuokalani Gardens. There's a small parking lot on the side of the building, but we easily found street parking on the weekday. I went to the counter and saw a variety of unique poke flavors and sides. The staff are very helpful in giving recommendations. I went for the classic spicy ahi while my boyfriend ordered a marlin poke. We did the one choice poke bowl for about $15. This is way cheaper than Oahu. The poke bowl was packed to the brim. I enjoyed every single bite of the poke bowl. The fish was fresh and flavorful. The marlin poke was unique and fun to try. The poke pieces are huge too. The value and quality is so worth it from Suisan Fish Market. They also have Eden in Love tote bags for sale. These make great gifts for your family. read more

Stopped by here to grab lunch on my way to the airport and this was the best poke I've had during my Hawaii trip. Tucked away inside a no-frills fish market, the poke section has extremely fresh fish and knowledgeable employees. The fish is fresh and tasty. Between the 4 of us, we got to try the Salmon, Ahi Shoyu Sesame Ginger, Aku Shoyu, Ahi Honey, Ahi Spicy, and Ahi Cali. We also got the kimchi tripe, purple yams, and seaweed salad as sides. All the fish was very good. My father loved the salmon, and my husband loved the Ahi Spicy and Ahi Cali, although those two are on the saucy side. I recommend trying the Aku tuna over the Ahi if you like a richer, fishier taste. The yams were also very tasty and a good balance to the fish. My main complaint is that the flavor is a little too salty in some of the sauces. In particular the kimchi tripe was super salty even with rice, and I ended up rinsing it in water which ended up with a perfect flavor. And I personally found the Shoyu flavors to be on the salty side as well - since the fish is fresh, I prefer sauce to be on the light side so I can taste the fish flavor, but the guy at the counter made sure to roll the fish over and over in the sauce before scooping it for me. tl;dr tasty, but if you like lighter flavoring like me, I suggest either getting the Hawaiian flavoring which typically has less sauce, or instructing the man at the counter not to roll your poke in the sauce prior to serving. now if you like heavy sauces then order away! read more

Cool place to pick up a bite to eat on the go. I tried a couple of options and one of them was a bit too saucy, the Ahi Shoyu Sesame, but had good flavor. The Ahi Hawaiian was great. Food: very fresh and reasonable price! The rice ratio is relatively high but their poke can make you finish it for sure. They offer many options from fish to octopus to scallop. Definitely recommend something with shoyu or spicy shoyu. Getting just poke is also more recommended! Service: very patient with tourists like us who can't decide right away and friendly to recommend flavors and explain their menu. Ambiance: casual. You only get a few white benches outside so takeout is the most recommended option. read more

Great poke! I particularly liked the hamachi and the lobster salad. I ate poke plenty of times while visiting the big island and this place had some more unique items! I tried the oyster sauce salmon and the hamachi, both of which were really good. Prices aren't cheap, but the freshness of the fish and the flexibility of ordering (you can get whatever weight quantities of each type you want) helped a lot. I got 1/3 pound each of the two fish and some rice. I also got some lobster salad, which I didn't have much expectation for but it's so good! It's like the standard crab salad but with lobster, so sweeter and meatier. I will say the rice was not good - it was undercooked. But they do give you a lot of you just buy a scoop ala carte. read more

We were visiting from Kona and went to the national park in the morning so we came here at closing so not much was left but we were able to nab some ahi tuna poke and hamachi poke. They are some of my favorite cuts so grabbed some rice and enjoyed it at the park next door. The fish tasted fresh and I preferred the hamachi and sauce over the tuna this time around. I'd come back to get the house hamachi style again but would like to come back to try the octopus when they have it in stock. Be sure to get your rice with some furikake on top too! read more

First time visiting Hawaii and my friend did mention this was her favorite place to get poke of the island! I loved all the selection they had here. The poke bowls come in two choices and rice. Sides are extra (and they're quite expensive?). Also the poke bowl was also quite expensive here, which was around $18? It may be standard price for Hawaii (I am an LA native lol). Service as quick and efficient. There's only outdoor seating here, but it feels quite dirty. Especially all the bugs flying around. I honestly don't remember which poke I got, but since this was my first experience having poke from Hawaii, it was WOW. The quality is definitely very fresh, it's almost so chewy and bouncy?? It doesn't have that strong fishy smell either. The rice serving is also pretty huge. This meal made me soooo full haha. I do wish the saucy poke was more saucier? It seemed like they focus a lot on fish quality, which they really seem true to what they serve! read more

We had our best Poke ever at Suisan Fish Market in 2018. We had an eye popping number of Poke to choose from. Today, went to Suisan Fish Market hoping to recreate our experience from last time. Unfortunately, we arrived at 1 pm (on a Saturday) and the choices were very limited- our bad. We still enjoyed their Spicy Ahi Poke, The Honey with Garlic Poke and the Oyster Poke. The Sweet Potato and Mango sides were great accompaniments to the Poke. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. We'll plan on arriving earlier in the day next time we're in Hilo. read more

Food Service I had the BEST meal of my Big Island trip here ,and also my very first poke experience in Hawaii! To be honest, I was always a little hesitant to try poke before, and because of that, my friends traveling with me also missed out. But this time, I finally gave it a shot. The staff here were so warm and welcoming . When they found out it was my first time, they kept offering me samples. By the third sample I actually had to say no, because otherwise I'd be full before ordering . My first taste was the Ahi Hurricane ,one bite and my eyes literally lit up. I realized eating raw fish isn't scary at all. it's actually delicious! That said, I still couldn't get past my mental block, so I ended up ordering the octopus and lobster poke . But that doesn't mean the ahi or salmon aren't amazing , they really are! Overall, Suisan Fish Market is an absolute gem. Friendly staff, generous samples, and super fresh, flavorful poke. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you're in Hilo. read more

Suisan has been known for years in Hilo for having the best & freshest poke, however I came here to show my boyfriend how good they are since he had a "bad soggy" pokebomb here once, and unfortunately I received white rice instead of brown and it was so mushy I couldn't eat it.
