Chief Special #1 and #2 are super good -- generous portions and packed with flavor! great value for the price. Had lots of crab meat and shrimp, really satisfying. The papaya salad was super fresh and refreshing. The host was very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend this place if you're around Hilo!

Hurray! They reopened on 11/15/24 after their move! New location is at 22 Furneaux Lane - enter under the Barber shop sign, lol. There are only six seats in the new location, takeout is good and same quality and pricing as before. Ambiance in your own home. Yum! So happy to have this Thai food again - we were having withdrawals as they had closed for two weeks. Food was ready in 15 minutes, excellent service.

We came back for another visit since our first one last year was so pleasant. Fresh rolls with shrinp, mmmm, a sweet chili sauce instead of peanut sauce, was delightful, the rolls fresh. Fried chicken - was just that, yet very tender, delicious batter perfect sauce We had the red curry pumpkin with chicken; I liked that we could order 'mild' red curry and not have my wifes mouth burned off, she cant handle heat (while I love getting torched, lol). It was really good. Prices are very reasonable. Portions are not big - which I liked, they were just right for two people. Street parking, free, easy to find on a weekday at dinner time. Once again, the restaurant inside was not busy, but there was a steady stream of take away and uber eats type orders. Upping to 5 stars for flavor, consistency, price.

Located right next to Hilo farmers market. We got seated as soon as we got there for dinner. (Booth seating inside). We tried the broccoli noodle, fried rice, basil stir fry. The food took a while (as they were busy) but it was worth the wait. All of our food was delicious. The spice levels are real deal so be mindful. The owner was friendly and you cannot beat the prices. We were surprised they were decent after getting used to the other tourist spots. Street parking is free and plenty of options around to dine or grab a dessert (mochi, shaved ice etc.)

Delicious! Tried them before they closed for a month, and was glad that we did. Host was so nice and funny, very hardworking for the busy night. Soup was so refreshing to start, chicken and pad see ew were great flavored, the Thai tea tasted wonderful to wash everything down.

Hole-in-wall place in downtown Hilo. There is very little street parking available. The menu is simple and prices are reasonable. Food portion is the perfect amount. The food here is full of Thai flavor. We had the Buddha Rama with sticky rice, pad kimao, pad Thai, Thai fried chicken breast, and tapioca pudding. The pad kimao is the best pad kimao in town! It's jam packed with flavor. The pad Thai was just ok. It could use more flavor and a slice of lime would've been nice. The crispy fried chicken was just ok. Not too much flavor and not crispy. The chicken was a bit dry. The Buddha Rama and sticky rice was yum! Good amounts of chicken breast and ung Choy. I liked the tapioca pudding. There was chunks of ube(purple Okinawa sweet potato) and covered in coconut milk.

Originally came to the area to eat at the highly reviewed pineapple's restaurant across the street but was overly crowded and the wait for one person was still 45mins+ (on a Saturday around 5pm) decided to walk around and found the farmer's market and then stumbled upon this location. Sooo many reviews talk about this being a hole in the wall and about the prices! They were not wrong, these prices are mainland / state side prices. Every dish is about $9-10 each! Ordered coconut water, thom yum soup and panang curry with beef Coconut water - 3/5 very delicious and has small bits of coconut in it but the straw is small that it cannot suck up the small bits of coconuts so that's annoying. It's served with ice and the same size as the glass of water Thom yum soup - I ordered it spicy and they DEFINITELY delivered. It's spicy just like in Thailand! Soooo flavorful! And a very generous portion! It's like a pho bowl! Chicken is really dry and lacks texture but the veggies soak in the broth Panang curry with beef - if there is any dish that I absolutely LOVE and order time and time again... it's panang curry! The curry is SO delicious and I also ordered it spicy but it's not a spicy as thom yum. You can see the difference of spice based on the redness of the broth but I believe the coconut base in the panang curry helps lessen the burn of the flames. The portion size is a lot less than the thom yum and I wish it was bigger but DAMN! It reminds me of when I was in Thailand 100% approve of this place! Awesome flavor and the staff was sooo friendly and quick with placing my order! This place should have more people coming in cause this place is sooo underrated

Going to this Thai restaurant for the first time and it was so good! We ordered 4 dishes for 3 people and had no leftover. Staff are super friendly and the food are awesome! Must try if you are around this area looking to satisfy your thai food craving. Don't miss out.

In spite of that, service is normally knowledgeable and friendly, extensive menu options, and served family style. I'm hooked on their steam dumplings, but I'm also a sucker for cilantro and onions, ask for it on the side or without if the people you're sharing with aren't fans lol. Recently got the summer rolls, pleasantly surprised by the portion size and the peanut sauce was so good we wiped the bowl clean; I like that it was on the thicker/chunkier side instead of too runny. You can never go wrong with the pad thai, perfectly coated and seasoned. Their red curry is perfect with a side of sticky rice (not included with curry order) and their eggplant stir fry was soft in a delectable sauce. Seriously can't go wrong with any options here. They also have alcoholic drinks, great sounding options but they have a heavy pour if you're into that.

When we finally were addressed, we requested to sit by the window to which verse told that we could not because the table was dirty. It did not look dirty, but he sat elsewhere. Have to replace our order random extra empty plates, bowls and serving and soup arrived that we never ordered and had no use. When the food arrived, we noticed that they were large portions. However, I would've preferred small portions with a steer food.. The lrad-nar/gravynoodles dish while we requested a no heat dish, we did not expect a no spice dish which tasted overwhelmingly of vinegar. The "medium" (6/10) spiced pad kee mao was barely a 2/10 level. Both came with thin, dried, packaged noodles that were unappealing. The pad kee mao lacked real basil flavor and fresh elements and felt bland and bare-bones cafeteria style . The rad-nar was a salty, vinegary gravy and simply not edible. To top it off, locals began arguing and pulling other diners into the conflict, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The wait staff who were asked to interview ran off and ignored issues. I simply can not recommend this restaurant.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

The reviews sold me. And then... reality arrived. The server was lovely but clearly trapped in a one-person reenactment of Kitchen Nightmares. Two of us ordered dinner at the same time. My partner received their entrée. Then their sides. Then time to reflect on life. I received... nothing. Not even "sorry"' from the kitchen. Only the server had the decency to acknowledge the mess. About 40 minutes later--after my partner had fully completed dinner, digestion, and emotional closure--they brought my entrée. I asked for extra veggies and "Thai hot." What I got was Mild Regret of neither with a garnish of panic: two heaping tablespoons of raw hot peppers dumped on top like a dare. That's not "Thai hot," that's "we forgot and now we're improvising." At this point, I asked for it to go, because I wasn't about to sit there eating solo like I missed the memo that dinner was a relay race. Also: summer rolls require basil. Basil. Not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg lettuce belongs in a 1994 suburban salad bar, not in Thai cuisine. There was zero concept of food arriving together, or being cooked to order, or basic culinary logic. That said--I'm a generous soul. They need a chance to redeem what was, without exaggeration, a masterclass in how not to run dinner service.
