We came back for another visit since our first one last year was so pleasant. Fresh rolls with shrinp, mmmm, a sweet chili sauce instead of peanut sauce, was delightful, the rolls fresh. Fried chicken - was just that, yet very tender, delicious batter perfect sauce We had the red curry pumpkin with chicken; I liked that we could order 'mild' red curry and not have my wifes mouth burned off, she cant handle heat (while I love getting torched, lol). Located right next to Hilo farmers market. We got seated as soon as we got there for dinner. (Booth seating inside). We tried the broccoli noodle, fried rice, basil stir fry. The food took a while (as they were busy) but it was worth the wait. All of our food was delicious. The spice levels are real deal so be mindful. The owner was friendly and you cannot beat the prices. We were surprised they were decent after getting used to the other tourist spots. Originally came to the area to eat at the highly reviewed pineapple's restaurant across the street but was overly crowded and the wait for one person was still 45mins+ (on a Saturday around 5pm) decided to walk around and found the farmer's market and then stumbled upon this location. It's served with ice and the same size as the glass of water Thom yum soup - I ordered it spicy and they DEFINITELY delivered. It's spicy just like in Thailand! Soooo flavorful! And a very generous portion! It's like a pho bowl! Chicken is really dry and lacks texture but the veggies soak in the broth Panang curry with beef - if there is any dish that I absolutely LOVE and order time and time again... it's panang curry! The curry is SO delicious and I also ordered it spicy but it's not a spicy as thom yum. You can see the difference of spice based on the redness of the broth but I believe the coconut base in the panang curry helps lessen the burn of the flames. We were able to find parking in the lot along Kamehameha Avenue. The curry was a reasonable price but keep in mind that it does not come with rice. Despite the good food, I was disappointed with the sanitation of the store. It was pretty empty when we went, and the worker was sitting at one of the tables without a mask on. Just delicious. Loved the fried chicken (we had it as an appetizer). Crispy outside, not too heavy on the breading, juicy inside. Note that there are bones. We also had the spring rolls. They were fine, but not my favorite. Beware - both of these come hot out of the fryer and you could easily burn your mouth. We also had the yellow curry with beef, which I loved as much as the chicken. You can choose the level of heat; ours was mild. It was not as yellow as most Thai yellow curries. I tasted the coconut milk much more than with any other curry I've had. It was not overwhelming, though, and actually quite pleasant. The final dish was chicken with ginger. This is hot ginger chicken, not cold like you get in Chinese restaurants. Very tasty with a tiny zing of heat. Great hit of antioxidants! All this plus one side of rice for less than $38. More than enough for two very hungry people, and probably enough for three. No A/C, but there were fans. We were lucky to be there when it was a little cooler, so we were comfortable. Prices in line with Honolulu. Parking is humbug; street parking mostly, if you can get it, and be prepared to walk. read more

Dreadfully understaffed on Christmas day that resulted in over an hour long wait time to get food. People at the restaurant were literally snoring with their faces resting on the table. It really doesn't matter what food we ordered when the service is that horribly slow. The lone cashier/waiter was completely flustered and passively vented to the diners in small but noticeable ways. I don't blame him unless he made the decision to stay open. Greedy management is at fault here. This place is at least 2 cooks and 1 waiter understaffed. After spending over two hours at the Saturday Farmer's market and just eating fruits and a few treats, we all wanted a nice meal before going beach hopping. This little restaurant is on the same side as the farmer's market where the produce and veggies are sold. Is nothing fancy or modern just simple and with a friendly vibe from the waiter. Menu has all the traditional Thai dishes and a good variety, prices are good as well as portions. We ordered the chicken satay and the peanut sauce was out of this world not your typical creamy peanut butter flavor one you normally get, the shrimp spring roll were bountiful and fresh. Coconut soup with shrimp was delightful, shrimp fried rice was good snd very generous with the shrimp and the chicken pad Thai was perfectly cooked, seasoned and loved every single bite of it. The restaurant has great ambience and service is friendly and fast. I've been here 3 times and never seen more than 2-3 parties during lunch. The thai chicken noodle(~$8) and Thai seafood curry(~$12) are fantastic. The portion is not bad for the price but it doesn't come with white rice. It's $1.95 for a mid-sized bowl. Seafood curry: It has a bold taste and perfectly seasoned. You can taste the rich coconut milk from the unique deep earthy flavor of the curry. The vegetables are fresh and not overcooked. Spiciness is on the mild side. Make sure to ask for Thai hot if you like your curry very spicy. Thai chicken noodle: The noodle is perfectly cooked - not too soft, not too hard. The chicken is bit on the chewy side but very edible. Overall flavor is better than most Thai restaurants on all 6 major Hawaiian islands. Yes! You heard that right. Including Oahu! I've eaten here a lot since I wrote my original review below of my experience with the Princess of the Jungle (below), so I'm upping them to 5 stars, not because there's nothing to be improved (of course there is) but because pretty frequently these days when we want to go out to eat this is where we end up due to the combination of value, deliciousness, cool quietness, and central location with easy street parking. Our go-to dishes are the red curry pumpkin with chicken special from the specials board in the window ($8.95, includes rice!) and "Thai fried chicken" which is a big plate of really yummy fried chicken strips with special request of peanut sauce. Also, their tapioca dessert which you better request as soon as you get in there, because on more than one occasion someone bought up the whole evening's supply for take-out and we were left with nothing :( Yes it's that good. It's just a quiet un-fancy cool spot in an old building in downtown Hilo. The owner is usually the waiter although one time his young nephew was the waiter and showed us his awesome tattoos and also turned out to be distant ohana to my sister-in-law. Very Hilo. read more

Hilo seems like such a sleepy town. We were there for a long weekend and it seemed like a lot of the restaurants closed early or just weren't open at all for the weekend! It was about 8pm and my boyfriend and I were pretty hungry after a long day of exploring the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We were also in the mood for Thai and there are like 12 Thai restaurants in the area. Some were closed and others were packed. We saw that this restaurant was open and we were a little skeptical because it was totally empty, but it was our only convenient option at the time. We were pleasantly surprised by the food that they served to us. We ordered Panang curry and basil chicken and they were delicious! There was such good flavor. The dishes could have used a bit more spice for us, but that's an easy fix. The food was so good, we came back and ate here again before we left Hilo. There were more patrons the second time that we visited. In addition to ordering the same two dishes, I got the tofu coconut soup that was packed with really good vegetables... delicious!
