I'm always down to support a local business and the concept sounded unique. The service by the wait staff was great, but the food was seriously lacking and the guy that came to take our payment was gruff with us. Truffle shrimp: Description - shrimp tossed in fragrant truffle and garlic aioli. Reality - shrimp drowning in garlic aioli and assumed to be unagi sauce on a bed of clover or alfalfa sprouts, no hint of truffle at all. French onion soup: Menu description - deeply caramelized onions in rich beef broth, with toasted baguette and bubbly cheese, served with side of garlic bread. Reality - boiled onions in some basic clear-looking soup. The onions weren't caramelized at all, the soup had no beef flavor, it wasn't that dark amber color characteristic of French onion soup, and it didn't look like a baguette on top, more like the same type bread that was served on the side. Tofu musubi: Menu description - Tofu with garlic chili oil crisp and sprouts wrapped in nori. Reality - The tofu was the most seasoned dish we had, but had no sprouts. Musubeast size Portuguese sausage musubi with egg: Menu description - sliced sausage on rice with egg. Reality - Exactly as stated. However, very little meat compared to rice ratio, and didn't come with the side slaw for the "Musubeast size." Seafood dip: We were the most excited about this one based on the reviews. However, wait staff informed us after ordering that they were out of chips and we could either cancel the order or get it with a side of rice, so we opted for the side rice. Never received the dip. At checkout, granted it was now 10-15 mins after closing at 7pm, a different guy came out to close out our check. We informed him that we didn't receive the dip, he stated they weren't serving the dip because they were out of chips. We reiterated that we had asked for the rice with the dip and didn't receive it. Not that an apology is expected, we understand that sometimes a food item is forgotten or things run out, but he proceeds to say "I guess I'll remove it from your order then." Sounded like he was planning to still charge us for the dip even though he had no intention of serving it AND he knew we didn't receive it? We weren't provided an itemized receipt prior to him just coming to collect the payment, made it feel like they were hoping to get a free 20 bucks off of us. Again, the concept was cool sounding. We were expecting something like elevated musubis with sushi rice, fried rice, or Kim chee fried rice, and a variety of protein/filling options. Or something like a build your own musubi from their list of options. This was not it; the food was lackadaisical and did not meet their menu descriptions. You're better off going 7/11, Kagimoto's, or Earl's. I always like to give restaurants multiple tries before giving a final opinion, but I have no intentions of returning to this one. read more

Owner (?) older man, basically makes you feel like he hates you down to your bones the moment you walk in. Stopped by while walking around downtown for some takeout. We got a double order of the pork musubi and Korean marinated chicken musubi. Our order came out pretty quickly, so we were in and out. The restaurant itself is small, but is clean and looks much more modern than a lot of other restaurants in the area. I like bbq sauce so I thought the pork Musubi could have used a little more sauce but my husband, who doesn't care much for saucy things, thought it was perfect. The musubis by themselves were both tasty and a nice change from the traditional spam Musubi. Both musubi's came with a side of kim chee, so the fattiness of the meat plus the acid of the kim chee was *chefs kiss* perfection. Overall, a great experience and we will definitely be going back for more. read more

Yummy musubi! What a great idea and clever name for one of my favorite snack foods turned quick lunch/dinner! You can order the full size or half size (no price difference) and the rice comes out fresh and delicious. I ordered the tuna option (note, it is tuna salad - not ahi poke or raw tuna). The others in my party had the other meat options. Everyone liked their musubi but agreed there could be more meat in the meat/rice ratio. Born and raised in this town, I genuinely love seeing small local businesses succeed. When this "beastro" first opened, I was excited--the concept is solid, and we had two good experiences on earlier visits, which is why we came back a third time today. Before eating, I stopped into my favorite shop, Hana Hou, while my partner waited at Musubeast for a few minutes. When I walked in with my shopping bags, the restaurant was completely empty. I politely asked the attendant if it would be okay for us to sit at a four-top instead of a very small two-top. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have minded the smaller table at all, but given that the restaurant was empty, I thought it was a reasonable request. Unfortunately, the attendant came out and responded in a way that felt unnecessarily rude, dismissive, and unwelcoming, giving a long explanation as to why we had to sit at the smaller table. The tone--not the policy itself--was the issue. The interaction made me feel uncomfortable enough that we decided to leave. This experience was a reminder that no matter how good the food may be, hospitality matters. Feeling welcomed and respected goes a long way, and it's often what keeps customers coming back. Sadly, based on how this was handled, I won't be returning. I hope the team reconsiders how they communicate with paying customers, because service can make or break an otherwise promising place. read more

I am vegan and both the waitress and chef were extremely kind and accommodating in checking and letting me know what was available for me to eat and even offering certain accommodations to me; it's all i could honestly ask for when I go out to eat. The food was delicious aswell and a great first introduction to a native Hawaiian food, makes me wish I lived here so I could come here all the time cause it would honestly be one of my go to spots. As my wife and I stolled by the shops on Kamehameha Avenue along the Hilo bayfront, I stopped to chuckle over the name of a tiny restaurant, "Musubeast Beastro," inventively letting you know that this place specializes in musubi, the snack made of a piece of spam or other meat sanwiched between blocks of rice and wrapped in dried seaweed. Okay, maybe visitors to Hawaii aren't familiar with musubi, but it's familiar fare here in Hawaii. We stopped in a couple of bookstores, wandered through an art gallery, visited the Tsunami Museum, and then decided we would stop for lunch at Musubeast. When we sat down, I told the server that they get my award for the best business name among all those we saw today! She laughed, and said they had only been open about a month (we ate their in mid-December). Musubeast proved to be a very good choice. The place was small, only a few tables, but comfortable. We watched several families come in with young children and depart with bags of musubi treats, apparently return customers. The unusual menu features breakfast and lunch selections, each list two typed pages. We decided to split a "Double Beast Size Supreme Spam Musubi, "Grilled Spam served on a bed of rice with Teriyaki Sauce and Spicy Aioli & Furukaki wrpped in Nori (seaweed)." A mini would have cost just $5.95, but the full Beast was $8.95. When we checked out, we discovered they gave us a 10% Kamaaina special as Hawaii residents. Our Musubeast arrived beautifully presented, and excellently prepared. It was, as we say in Hawaii, ono! Delicious. Enough for two oldsters. Your experience may vary. The staff were very nice, and trying very hard. If we lived here in Hilo, we would be among those returning customers, no doubt! I hope they make it. They deserve it. . read more

Food is above average, which is sufficient for its location in a tourist area, surrounded by many other 'pretty good but not great' restaurants. The nori is a tiny bit over moisten, making it very tough to break when biting. The meat to rice ration is reasonable but they used regular rice instead of sushi rice, so the texture of a bite is a little different. On the side order section of the menu, the kim chee is listed as $2.59, but it shows up on the bill as $4.59, that might have been an honest mistake, but it does not look good since the portion size of kim chee is closer to $2.59 then $4.59. read more

Excited that a new restaurant opened up on bayfront so had to check it out. The restaurant was empty but it was very clean and well maintained. Bathroom was also very clean which is always a plus. I wasn't very hungry but decided to try the Korean chicken musubi. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed with a bland tasting musubi that fell apart and became a mess to eat. Maybe I eat too much zippy's korean chicken but I was expecting something with a lot of taste. I'll go back when I'm hungrier to try other items but the Korean Chicken musubi was not my jam. read more
