Burger is cooked to preferred temperature and while I normally order steaks and burgers medium rare. I now order mine medium here as it's a true medium rare when ordered that way. A bit shy from unfriendly. Price is about what you get at restaurants and food trucks. Food is out in the recycled board containers with no foil lining so when you pick up your food hold with both hands or it folds and you can drop it easily. I've been eying this place for a while now. Haven't had the chance to visit since their hours are only M-F from 10-2pm. and finally got the chance to try it! It's located outside of Kea'au where all the contractors and manufacturers are located before the left turn into the actual town. There's a small parking lot shared by another food place. I got their combo plate of Korean chicken and Blacked ono which came with coleslaw and rice. The food smelled and tasted delicious! There was a ton of flavor in both of them, and I loved how they purposely put the Korean chicken on top of the rice to soak in the flavor. A downside is that I didn't realize the Korean chicken was more chicken skin rather than the actual chicken itself, tho. Generally don't care about chicken skin. The fish was a bit overcooked but was fantastic tho! One friend for their Korean chicken and Furikake ono, and she loved her meal. She got crinkle fries on the side, and omg. They were super crispy and fried to perfection. Just the way I like my fries. Another friend got their mushroom Swiss burger which was cooked really nicely too! This will probably be my to-go next time. She also got their BBQ brisket which was super tender. I liked this place overall. Definitely will be back to actually get their burger next time! read more

Note this review is for their logistics, not the food itself (which we couldn't actually try). Ugh, this is a claimed Yelp page, yet they are closed without updating their hours and information. I really hate giving such a low rating to a small restaurant, but it's super disappointing to have trekked all the way out just to find out they have a planned closure. We planned a decent part of our day around making it out to this restaurant. Review #20 for 2020. I've enjoyed Maona Lunch Counter for years now ever since they were downtown. And though they've moved to Shipman, their food is just as good with great service. What I always remember about Maona is their consistently good burgers. Always fresh, always tasty, always juicy. These are the type of burgers that you don't want to eat when you're dressed up, but rather you'll need lots of napkins or even a towel because they drip down your arms when you eat them. That's how good these burgers are. I'd say among the best on the Big Island. I've never had a bad burger here. Maona also does specials, so my brother and I opted to each have a burger, PLUS share BBQ brisket. The brisket was also very good. Tasty, juicy, and overall good. If I had to choose just one thing for lunch, I'd go with a burger. Maona represents a charm of Hilo that I hope never gets lost: a locally owned restaurant that caters to the local community in taste, price, and location. They're located in the Keaau industrial park and worth the drive for sure! So far I've tried their roast pork on an earlier occasion and I tried the Korean chicken today.....it doesn't get any better! Their plate lunches will put you in a coma! They don't skimp on flavor or quantity or quality! We also ordered the ahi belly and it was delicious! The cole slaw is a refreshing change from the obligatory Mac salad side! My son ordered the cheese burger and fries, since he's a burger fanatic! (He ate half of the burger before I could take the picture) I ordered the oyster chicken, which came with this bomb drizzle of what seemed to taste like a spicy aioli. Omg!!! Sooo yummy! Tucked away on a little off-road in a industrial area off of Mamalahoa Hwy sits a little hole in the wall cafe. It's small serving area gives off a feel off a "worker's diner" with the minimal eating area and one person counter. The choices are many, with of course the specials of the day. The prices are comparable to most places. The staff was very pleasant and helpful when ordering. I chose the hamburger sandwich, which they are known for and fries. The drinks are refrigerated are self-served refrigerator I was blown away with the size and freshness of my burger (grain fed beef). This was no pre-made patty. It was that old fashion, hand made patty we all long for. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. Served on a sesame seed bun. The fries were pipping hot and crispy, which only added to my experience. A true Kanak Attack (full and ready to sleep) experience in the making. Their hours are catered to the workers in the area, so get there before 2 p.m. and take cash. It's their only form of payment.
