We were staying in the Volcano area and decided to try several restaurants in the area during our visit. Service started off friendly and attentive, but after large parties arrived, the staff seemed overwhelmed and probably was not on their A-game. The burger and fish and chips were both good. However, the "local" dishes like the saimin and kalua pork were disappointing and didn't quite meet our expectations. The restaurant has a casual, chill vibe with lots of free and convenient parking, which made it an easy stop while exploring the area. I'd say this a solid place to go. This place has a lot of charm. Friendly staff. A cool view of a rad dog and cat on the patio. The waitress was attentive without hovering... Food was solid, good portions, I don't eat a ton so I had half a burger to share and half my fries (I saved room for a tart!!). I would say upscale diner food. Get here early for dessert tho, cause they were out of most of it once we were here on the later side!! We came here after hiking around the volcano, it's a really short drive from the national park. Service was great and friendly. The food came out pretty quickly, I got the kahlua tacos and I am obsessed. I absolutely loved them. They were out of guava cheesecake but we tried the macadamia nut cheesecake and it was very tasty. This is a nice and convenient place to stop for lunch when visiting Mauna Loa Volcano. The service is friendly and efficient, with plenty of seating available (restrooms are conveniently located just outside). Ordered an ABC burger subbed the bun for rye bread and toss salad, hubby said the burger was home made and delicious. I had the chicken Katsu, potato/mac salad and french fries. Think they use the japanese Bulldog brand katsu sauce which is a plus. The meal was delicious and satisfying. Also ordered a Mocha coffee which was tasty too! We luckily found this place an hour before they closed and they took our big group of 11 people. We were very grateful and the hospitality that we got was amazing. The servers were on top of it and the food came out very quickly. I ordered the Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi and taro burger. My daughter ordered the fettuccine Alfredo kids meal. I truly enjoyed my plate with the mahi-mahi as the mashed potato and the fish and the coleslaw were all fresh and delicious and I wanted more. Unfortunately, the Taro burger was tasteless to me and my family that tried to bite also agreed but taro is pretty bland so it's kind of expected. I had a little bit of my daughters fettuccine and it was kind of watery, but the girls liked it and it didn't have fettuccine pasta. Had spaghetti noodles. We came by here for dinner with our tour group of about 12 people after visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. They were ready for us, so we were seated relatively quickly. They have a full menu and bar, and their Mai-Tais are both tasty and strong. The Mac Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi was enjoyable - flaky and flavorful. The sides were average - rice, veggies, mac salad - nothing too special about them. Staff didn't seem the friendliest but were pretty efficient so that's a plus. Prices for the entrees seemed to be a bit much all things considered, but it was included in our tour cost so I'm not considering that in this review - otherwise, I'd probably give it a 3 star. We walked in and got sat. 3 tables came in after us. 2 tables of 2 people, and 1 table of 3. They all got ordered. After 20 minutes, we were still waiting to place our order. This was a post bike ride, post soaked in the rain stop. They have plenty of parking - BEHIND the restaurant. There is a narrow pass or you can go left of the buildings. It was dead when we were there - and service was very slow. I'm glad we only ordered coffee and cheesecake because I doubt we would've seen our food. Lava Rock Cafe is conveniently located in the town of Volcano, right outside Volcano National Park. Service was nice and friendly, unfortunately the fish tacos were dry and did not taste good. You get 3 pieces which is enough to share unfortunately I didn't like the seasoning nor the shredded cheese it came with.
