We're staying in Volcano and there are not a lot of options for food and drinks. Lanikai Brewing is a gem in the ashes. The Bees Knees pizza is amazing! The combination of pesto, goat cheese and hot honey combined with the salty pepperoni is perfection. Their pizza crust is light and airy. The La Suprema pizza was also delicious but the toppings were very heavy so the crust was soggy in the middle. Great beer options and I really enjoyed the Kau Weala Cooler - so refreshing. Great service. We were checked in on often.

Located very close to the volcano nat. Park, we were reading about the pizza and how good it was. So there we went. Initial vibes were good and the staff was very friendly and checked on us regularly. There were 2 very drunk men sitting inside which was a little annoying but nothing they could do but be nice to them. I ordered a few flights to sample some beers and none disappointed. For food we ordered 2 pizzas with one being the Bees Knees and the other was the La suprema. Both were amazing but we highly recommend the bees knees. The dough is handmade daily and the oven produced a beautiful crust which was not overly hard. The pizza was 5/5 for sure. The only thing that brought the review down was that while we were finishing up, one worker came by and sprayed the table next to us with the table cleaner spray and it went all over to our side and got some in the food and drink. I would definitely recommend that they pay attention and be more cautious when cleaning to avoid tables being sprayed with the chemical solution. Otherwise this was a great experience and wish I had more time to go back to try more of the pizzas.

A short drive from the park, we stopped in for some local craft beer. The small dining area inside was full, we sat on the patio at a high top and enjoyed the views of the slow comings and going of the locals. The waitress was very friendly and engaging. Subject to personal taste, I had the Pillbox Porter and Moku Imperial IPA. Both excellent flavor without being overwhelming. Looking around at other tables, seemed people were really enjoying the wood cooked pizzas! Have to try one next visit.

Stopped here after visiting the volcano! Loved the meal and the space. It was outdoorsy feel and kinda intimate for being a brewery (in a good way). We loved it and the food was delicious!!!!

This place was quite busy on a Sunday evening- there was a long line but it went down pretty quickly. They were out of most of their appetizers and all of the salads. Food came out fairly quickly though The volcano ramen's broth was pretty watery, not very flavorful. Also the beef in the sort rib adobo was a bit too salty for my taste. The fish curry was very good, as well as the bees knee's pizza. I would definitely get these again!

Loved this place. It's small, but the atmosphere was so warm. Everyone was very welcoming. Our food and beer came out so quickly. My sour was delicious and oh wow, the fish sandwich was really good.

Ulu tacos

Food around volcano national park is limited and pricey. This, in addition to the Kileau Military Camp, are good tasty options. Food - the Ulu tacos are a delight. We've never had them before and wanted to try. Ramen broth is not very flavorful but the pork belly is very tasty. Sausage pizza with caramelized onions is good, easy to share for 2 people. Coconut haupia pudding is refreshing. Service - fast and friendly. Always a wait after 7pm. They usually have empty tables but because they don't have enough serving staff it's hard to turn the tables around quickly.

Lanikai Brewing Company was our rainy day stop in Hilo, and while the weather wasn't exactly cooperating, the food and drinks made it worthwhile. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated, and there isn't much of a designated waiting area so you're essentially hanging out on the front porch. On a dry, sunny day that might be part of the charm, but in the rain and chill it's not the most comfortable setup. They do have outdoor seating, though again, it's definitely better suited for clear skies. Once we were seated inside, the experience completely turned around. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and service was quick without feeling rushed. I ordered the Mai Tai which was well balanced and pleasantly strong without being overpowering. My husband went with one of their IPAs and was equally happy with his choice. We shared the Parmesan garlic fries and the Pig and Fire pizza, and both were excellent. The fries come topped with an aioli which isn't something you see everywhere, but it worked really well and added a creamy richness to the garlic and cheese. The pizza had a great balance of smoky, savory flavors with just enough heat to keep it interesting. Overall, not the coziest spot to wait out a storm, but once you're inside, it's a solid place for good beer, strong cocktails, and satisfying food. On a sunnier day, I imagine it would feel even more enjoyable.

Place is clean. It's very small and there's a tv that keeps up with the volcano. The service is fast and friendly. They went over the menu and where to find things. We ordered the tacos as an app. My husband got the ramen and I got the short ribs. They were out of the raw menu and one of the desserts. The food was really good. We are from New Orleans so we are big food people. I think this was the first place we said we would come back to again. Id skip the tacos and get the fries - the fries look really good

Friendly staff, quick service. Delicious food spot. Went as a group of 7 near closing and were quickly & happily seated. I didn't feel rushed at all, and the dishes came out fast. The ulu tacos were very unique and delicious! I thought I wouldn't enjoy them but the mix of toppings and flavors, along with the soft potato-y texture of the ulu, were simply delicious. However, the catch of the day (or whatever the daily fish dish is called) was PHENOMENAL. I've been to quite a few restaurants and this was absolutely a fine dining-level dish. The curry was sweet, coconutty, and rich, with deliciously soft pieces of purple sweet potato and squash. And the ahi- I didn't think ahi matched curry as I like my ahi raw, but this dish changed my mind. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned, perfectly juicy and tender.

Cute but small place. We went to the Volcano National Park and Lave tube and wanting a bike to eat before the drive back to our resort. We seem to get there just in time before the dinner rush. We were sat quickly, staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of their menu items. Definitely seemed like a popular locals hangout. Love when we find a place locals also dine at. I had the Poke. It was very fresh and delicious. The fried rice paper wrap as a bowl was an interesting twist but very tasty. We also got the garlic Parmesan fries to share. Keep up the great work!

Seat yourself inside or outside. Menu is clear with sandwich, pizza, and salad options. Fun fact, they make their own distilled spirits and some of their items include "good for your belly" items. We tried the Da Roni pizza with homemade dough. It was good. I had read a review raving about the coconut custard made with kefir. I knew I needed to try it since I'm big on keeping my gut happy. Well, it wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. I'll let you know later if it did anything else. ;) Since the place we're staying wasn't close, I ordered the fish (Ahi) sandwich to go with fries and sauce on the side. The sandwich was amazing, especially the sauce. Unfortunately, the fries were burned to a crisp. We felt Eric was a bit pushy with trying to get an order. There was a gal helping out by bringing some of the food and drinks out that always had a smile. My husband really liked the beer, commenting it was very refreshing and the right amount of carbonation.

Their standards are good and they also have a barrel program which has some room for improvement, but is coming along. Where else can you find a barleywine in Hawaii. They also make their own ginger beer and their Dark and Stormy was delicious. My favorite beers were the barleywine and the tripel. I tasted 8 total. The tasting room is well appointed. I appreciate a comfy bar stool. The bathroom was nice and clean. They also have food trucks or food daily. This day they had Uncle Bob's smoked ribs, with truffle mac and cheese, and a cornbread muffin. Probably the best ribs I have ever had. They were seasoned so well I didn't even need sauce. Very clean and functional given the limited size but they had a lounge open upstairs for overflow. We stayed here for 2 nights, dined at both restaurants and woke up and had breakfast to the view of Kilauea. Upon check in, we received complimentary mimosas (one per person). The room itself was fine but the view was excellent (you can see Kilauea from our window). It was clean, sheets were clean and the queen bed was comfortable enough. No air conditioning so we left the windows open during the day time and during the evenings, we used the little fan. On the last night, we made a makeshift window unit by cracking it open a bit and putting the fan there to blow in the cool evening air. It worked better than we expected. On our last day, the bathroom sink started to smell like sewers but since we were checking out and didn't spend much time using the bathroom, it didn't bother us as much. The bathroom amenities are full sized. The lotion smelled divine but the hand soap smelled like olives. It was fine though and did the job. I cannot think of a more perfect way to enjoy nature! We did some hikes, a few trails will lead you back to the hotel. They have a couple of shops for souvenirs, odds and ends, and snacks. The staff were super friendly and helpful.

My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. Overall, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to check out The Hidden Nene if you're in Hilo.

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

When we arrived, we were seated promptly. The noise level was decently low, even with live music, and we were so happy for that. Here lately, every place we have gone has been sooo loud to where we couldn't have a conversation, so this was a nice touch. Our waitress came to grab our orders promptly and brought our drinks quickly. We decided on mozzarella sticks for an appetizer, a pesto burger no tomato with a garden patty, and another garden burger plain and dry, both with fries. Food came out decently swiftly, and everything looked amazing! The fries were piping hot and absolutely wonderful: perfectly crispy, not greasy, with flavor and perfect seasoning. The pesto burger was soo good. The pesto itself had a great flavor without being overbearing or oily. I loved the slice of fresh mozzarella. The burger itself was cooked perfectly, and the bread was nice and toasty without being hard. The mozzarella sticks were fantastic, not greasy at all, and were decently sized. I really liked the marinara it came with, which it was flavorful without being overbearing and the only thing we could taste. I assume the garden burger was equally enjoyed, for there was no conversation coming from that side of the table. Oh, and he stole the rest of my fries. Thief!! This was a great decision. The interior screams dive bar in an interesting way, but that food? Definitely not greasy spoon or quickly thrown together dive bar appetizers, that's for sure! We will definitely come back!
