My wife and I stopped by Ola Brew on a Monday afternoon for some beers and the brewery was not too busy, with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. Ordering is at the bar and you find seating wherever you can. Ola Brew has it all covered in terms of your typical bar amenities: they had two large TVs setup broadcasting hockey and an NBA game, board games, outlets for charging your devices, and I even saw somebody with their laptop out getting some work done. I ordered their Kiawe vanilla porter and really enjoyed the subtle vanilla notes and that the beer was not sweet. Having just done a vanilla tour earlier in the day on the north side of the island, I had a new appreciation for how vanilla is used across different food products. Far too often vanilla is associated only with sweet items, so I liked its application here in beer as an after-note on the palette. Definitely a beer I would get again! read more

There's some salads, some pizzas, and some "favorites". Great spot to watch a game and enjoy some beer and food. There are a few spots in the front lot but additional street parking available. We ordered the roasted beet salad with chicken and 6 buffalo wings. The food came out fast and had great flavor. I love a good brewery so I had to check out Ola when reading up on where to grab a drink on the Big Island. They have a small parking lot with a couple spots but it's in an industrial area so there's street parking. Throughout the time we were there it was great to see the staff engaging with the regulars and be so welcoming. The space is a little unassuming at first as you need to order inside but they seem to have plenty of connecting indoor spaces and even outdoor spaces for large groups. We opted for bar seating so we could watch the game while we enjoyed our flights. The flights were a great way to try their classic beers and some of their seltzers. read more

The OG beer flight was a fun way to taste all the local beers they brew, and the hard seltzer was light and refreshing. I've had their other hard seltzers and I'd say the lemon lime wasn't my favorite flavor, but the ginger and hibiscus lavender are yummy! Vibe: The restaurant has a slightly dark, chill vibe with multiple TVs playing sports games throughout the restaurant. You can order your drinks at the bar. They have food, which we didn't order but all the dishes that others were eating looked delicious! Here's the thing there's a lot of things that I really like about this place. The food is pretty good. If you're looking to fill up and have a lot of food this might not be the one you want. But it's tasty food. The portion sizes are not equal. We saw a plate go by with fish and chips, and it was really generous with fish and so we ordered it and then when ours came, it was not quite so generous, and we were disappointed. And we had one basket that had a lot of fries and another basket but didn't have a lot of fries so I'm not sure if there's some quality control going on back there or what but that might be something that could be looked at because they should be equal. On that note service where to start I get that large parties might be hard, but in this in parties, here are not hard. You see yourself. You order yourself. You go to the bar and then you order. You get your own water you get your own drinks you get your own food. There shouldn't be a lot of service other than bringing the things to you. Requiring a gratuity of 20%, which is if you ask me extreme for a group of six or more is frustrating at the very least... at the point that we showed up there was very little else open, and there were six of us... given our odds of finding anything else open we ate here anyway... and even though we weren't completely full, we decided not to order anything else because we were gonna get hit with another 20% to order... and that's for us to go to the bar and order our own food and wait for it like a fast food place?? so I gotta ask why is there a 20% gratuity for the same level of service as everybody else that's here at this place? Everyone is here goes to the bar orders the food. Everyone that's here sits down at their own table that they find. There are plenty of large tables or we can split up our own party. When you tip for service ahead of time, it really doesn't encourage good service either. I'm beating a dead horse. Let's move on shall we? I was told it wouldn't have tomatoes, but it did have one sliced so if you have allergies, beware... I do, but luckily they were on the side of the salad, and I took my chances. Beer is the best on the island by far BUT the food needs improving. The waiter told me the fish and chips were tempura battered and it was extremely far from that. Honestly the pizza took a longggg while for some reason, we were just about to call in and check for the update, but finally our pizza arrived. First few bites, the pizza was really nice (probably bc I was hungry) but after settling in and thinking about it... it's just a pepperoni pizza with pesto sauce 'drizzle' haha. I wish the crust was softer, but it's a basic pizza. Gets the job done. Trying the sunset drink, it was our first time trying something like this, or a "hard juice" and I guess it's quite literal. They don't have much in the way of cutlery, mostly you have to eat with your hands. You can get a to go box if you want to share, I didn't see plates. There is water available for you to take. But the beer is great and the food is good. I really like the mushroom pizza. Hubby devoured his burger. AC was cold, beer was cold, food was hot and tasty. The beer is good. The bar had a musician on a holiday weekend who basically made it impossible to sit in half the restaurant. He was taking up three tables worth of space and was playing so loud it was unpleasant to be inside. There was very limited outdoor seating with minimal lighting. I had to use my phone to see my food. There was a whole section that was just closed, cutting the seating to less than half. At least a dozen people, mostly families, left because there was nowhere to sit and it was too loud during the 6-7 dinner rush. We waited for a long time for our food. It was unseasoned and came out cold. My order was wrong, and when they "fixed" it it was still inaccurate. I guess it's a good thing that I tipped before eating, because I was pretty pissed by the time I left. This isn't a dinner spot, and it's not a family spot. Skip it if you're looking for a meal. Ola brew is one of our favorite spots when visiting Hawaii island. Not only are the beers delicious, but the atmosphere is perfect for dates, large groups, and visiting tourists/locals alike. A favorite of mine is the Kiawe porter, which is intermittently available in our local stores on Oahu. This round, also tried their dragonfruit Lilikoi milkshake IPA, which was so different than anything I've ever drank. We love how they utilize local flavors and trends, and tend to have a variety outside of straight IPAs on their menu regularly. In addition to beer, this community-owned brewery produces seltzers, alcoholic juices, and are breaking out in the spirit market. Many are available for sale in 6 packs as well at their storefront. We have tried food here, and for your standard bar/brew fare, we were pleased. And! They have TVs in case you're looking for a more laid back scene on a Saturday or Sunday for sports. Everything I tried was solid with bold flavors, great balance, and something for everyone. They also have seltzers and ciders if beer is not your thing. Tried to check out Kona Brewing but they had a ticketed event the night we were in town - but people had recommended this spot as a good spot as well, especially since it is actually brewed local (whereas apparently Kona no longer is...?). Their logo on the inside is EPIC - I loved all the coloring and honestly the indoor is really sleek and gives off a unique vibe for a brewery. We loved our beers too - and split an Ola Burger, two deliciously crispy and flavorful smash burgers for a fair price. My only complaint is that the line got incredibly long - extending essentially throughout the whole venue at one point - which made for closing our tab incredibly frustrating. read more

There are 2 outdoor patios and indoor seating. You walk up to the bar to order. They have a decent-sized menu of salads and pizzas and a few other things. I wish they had appetizers. The hubs got a beer sampler, which he said was good. I got a hard tea from a can and it was light and refreshing. We ordered the beet salad and the funghi pizza. The beet salad was tasty, with lots of beets, quinoa crunchy Mac nuts and mixed greens. A nice, healthy light meal. It was over dressed but I imagine that's not always the case.
