Sunset Runner
Tina S.

Friendly staff and fresh food. Amazing view and good food what else can you ask for? We love the wedge salad, coconut shrimp, and of course the generous portion of fries. One of the best drinks they serve is the Sunset Runner, and if you're lucky Michael or Chelsea will be working. Let's not forget the live music nightly.

Sunset Terrace has fallen from its former glory days of "Ono" food, tasty cocktails and stellar service to offering bland and overpriced consumables accompanied by inconsistent service depending on the day you visit. As Wyndham owners and business professionals, we understand that sometimes our expectations far exceed our experiences. However, since the prior co-owner left, this place continues its downward trajectory. Current ownership and management should be held accountable for this continued disappointment we have experienced in the last five years. After speaking with other Wyndham owners and local business professionals we have discovered this has been a growing concern due to poor bar and grill leadership. The "golden rule" in the service industry is simple and relative to the best selling book in the world if that's your belief. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." In an environment that should appeal to all of your sensory emotions, Sunset Terrace management and ownership has failed to live up to that expectation through witnessed outbursts of rudeness and belligerence that have forced us and our neighbors and colleagues to find alternative accommodations and dining experiences until Wyndham rectifies this ongoing display of poor restaurant behavior and inconsistent service. In fact, the only thing consistent is the sunset view.

Oh my this was such a great place to come to have a drink and watch the sunset. This restaurant is located at the Kona Coast Resort where we stayed. It was really nice to be able to walk over to it from our condo. They do not have a special "Happy Hour" but we really enjoyed having a drink here. They have a full bar and offer drinks, wine, beer and hard seltzer. We so enjoyed the waitress and bartender and received great service. In the evenings, most nights, they had live music which made the whole experience top notch. In addition to coming here in the evenings, we had breakfast here one morning. They have a limited menu, but very tasty. The food was served hot and was good. The real magic here was the amazing sunset view, the nice music and the great drinks and service that we received. Thanks for making our time so nice when we came here.

This was such a fun place. We loved the live music in the evening and the staff was friendly and helpful well recommendations. Portions on the fish and chips were a bit small for the price but it was so tasty. They were single staffed so it took a bit of time but we didn't mind because of the view and music.

We got there near when they stop serving but still 15 minutes. For some reason the waitress ignored us and took 2 tables that came in after us. We finally flagged her down and she said kitchen was closed. I pointed out she took orders from 2 tables that came later, she went back and said she got them to let her take the order. I'm addition tables had not been cleared and we had to Push dishes to the side and wipe the table. We split a pork sandwich with fries that was pretty good but after the problem getting served and dirty tables don't expect to Go back

The food was wonderful, super good hamburgers, I don't know how two slices of cheese made it extra cheesy, but they did it super well! The service was wonderful, and the ambience of the singer in front of the pool was amazing! 10 out of 10!

This restaurant is located on the Kona Coast Resort property. They have upgraded it quite a bit since our last visit. However, each time we dined there, they only had one server and they doubled as the bartender sometimes. The food was fresh and served hot/cold. They had a smaller selection than the last time, but it was quality fare. We had the Ono fish and chips, the mushroom Swiss burger, the chicken cordon blue sandwich, chicken wings, papaya with yogurt and granola, stuffed French toast, fruit plate, bacon & eggs while we were there. The view from the place overlooks the ocean and they do have live music several nights a week, which was new. Loved their virgin lava flow and Pina colada drinks while sitting poolside. Papaya

The food wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't special either. If you ask me what the best thing about this place is I would have to say that if you are staying at the Kona Coast Resort is that it is convenient. The food is not remarkable, and the menu has shrunk. But it will fill you up, and the view from the patio is nice. So it you are going to be walking around shopping in town for several hours it's a good way to start the day. If you're looking for a spectacular meal you will have to search elsewhere.

Leaving a 1 star for the earful service by the waitress who refused to give us her name. But I got a photo, not the best quality. The food was good here but the service from her and the bar tender was unacceptable to any standard. It doesn't take much to be a decent human being but this lady was ignoring us, talking about us to the bar tender to where we could hear her and practically throwing our drinks at us as she brought them over. She was helping everyone around us that got there after us and when we put our order we waited and hour and a half and still nothing. We ended up leaving when we asked her if it was almost ready and her response rude and walked away to the bar tender and started pointing and laughing. So sad that this lady has no class or was ever taught how to treat people.

WORST waitress EVER!!

When we got there, the place was packed out the door...and it was only about 5:30pm. We considered trying somewhere else, but parking was quite a challenge, and since we found a spot in their lot, we decided to stay and wait it out. But as it turned out, there was a table available inside, so we took it. Apparently, outside seating is preferred here, with beautiful views of the ocean. The one thing we learned after we were seated was that it was directly under a ceiling fan....that did not work. Man, it got warm in there. But the food was worth it. My wife had the flatbread special, which was very good. And I had the Pineapple fried rice with Ono fish, which was outstanding. One of the best dishes during our entire stay on the Big Island. When we first were seated, it was probably 10-15 minutes of just waiting for someone to stop and address us. We were actually at the point of considering walking out, as servers continually walked by our table on the way to the kitchen. Finally, Kylie stopped and asked if anyone had taken our order. I'm not sure it was even her table, but from that point on she took care of us and did a great job. Go early, have patience, and try to get a table outside.

The seating is quaint and personal, and our server was very nice and attentive. The food definitely looked great when it arrived, but the execution missed the mark for us because the flavors were just too overwhelming. Cuban Egg Rolls: The presentation was lovely and they looked delicious. However, the mustard drizzled on top was so overpowering that you couldn't really taste anything else inside the roll. Pulled Pork Sandwich & Pepperoni Fries: My husband ordered this combo. He really enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich, but the fries were kind of sad. Jamaican Jerk Chicken Sandwich: I ordered this, but unfortunately, the jerk sauce was so intense that it completely drowned out the chicken, avocado, and tomato. Overall, the atmosphere and service were wonderful, but if the kitchen dialed back the sauces and mustard so you could actually taste the individual ingredients, the food would be fantastic!
