So I was just in Kona for my solo Birthday Vacation and I definitely wanted to check out Sams. I heard it was a great dive bar and it was! A lot of local, karaoke was fun and I made friends easy. Getting a drink took a bit but it was busy in there. Very small but I would def go back anytime I go back to Hawaii!!

    Karaoke after 8 pm......

Badass little bar in the back of an outdoor mall in Kona. Great servers, cheapest drinks in the area, free parking a short walk away. We came here three times while in Hilo. I was drinking Mai Thais and mixed drinks, so I can't comment on their beers. The two servers we had were each great. It's a tiny bar with only one person on a shift. They kept our drinks full, were fun to talk to, and even served us popcorn without asking. The locals love this place. Retired boaters, motorcycle clubs, local blue collar workers. Fun stories. Apparently the bar was featured in a Greatest Catch TV show - so look it up!

Their sign "All Roads Lead To Sam's" perfectly describes my experience with them. Because of them, my 2 week vacation on Big Island went from great, to awful, to fantastic. A lovely Lyft driver recommended Sam's to me and my group of friends so we decided to visit on our last night in Kona. We had an amazing time with the help of bartender Derek, and security guard Josh. The drinks were cheap and amazing. The karaoke vibe was so fun and entertaining that we decided to join. It is definitely a place I would 100% recommend for any visitors in the area. Unfortunately, the next day I lost my wallet. We went on a hike at Pololu Valley and that was where I thought I lost it. Luckily I still had my phone and passport and the items inside my wallet were replaceable, but it was still upsetting. We stayed near Hilo and Pahoa for the next 7 nights. On the last day, we had a late flight out of Kona so we drove back to the west side of the island. It was a last minute decision (literally 1 hour before our airport check-in) but we decided to end our vacation with some goodbye shots at Sam's. I ended up sitting right infront of the sign. And my boyfriend happened to ask them if by any chance they found a green wallet there. And Derek, our same bartender, said he did! So he spent the next half hour contacting his boss and me still being in shock, I finally saw my green wallet in his hands... right infront of me... even after I've accepted it has been lost to the island a week ago. This was amazing! If it weren't for my friend suggesting shots last minute, and if it weren't for my other friend saying we could walk to Sam's, and if it weren't for my boyfriend asking Derek, and if it weren't for Derek and Sam's taking care of my lost wallet that had its own vacation in their safe for a week, I wouldn't have gone home with my wallet and everything in it. All our roads definitely lead to Sam's. Mahalo for an amazing experience!

    A great visit!!!

Great place for good drinks and friendly people. And if Chris is working behind the bar, don't say anything negative about Bo Jackson! If you want a truly laid back bar to go to without any fu fu bling and fakeness, then this is the place.

Great spot for cheap drinks, karaoke, and to chat with some locals. The Mai Thai was for sure the cheapest and strongest I had while in Hawaii. We had a little trouble finding the place since it's down the center of a mall area, and it's pretty small. If you are coming from the main road Sam's will be in about a block and on the left across from a little sheltered smoking area that also has a Sam's sign.

I didn't eat when I went there. But the staff was so friendly. We sang karaoke and had a few drinks. Visiting from the mainland and it was a great experience.

This bar right here is the most iconic dive bar in kona! The service is right on point! people and bikers welcome. Air conditioning on point and it's definitely a nice hideaway! Come one come all and hang out and chill for sure. I've been coming here for years and I will coming for more! Come on down to Sam's hideaway and join in on the local talk story and forever good times! Amber is the utmost attentive bartender as well....I hope to see you rolling through the red door!

We were on the lookout for cheap maitais and Sam's was the place! You really can't beat his $6.50 price in the area. It's divey, local, and loud. It's indoors, has bathrooms, and jukebox music. No food is available for purchase. Highly recommend this place for cheap drinks!

fantastic, perfect, amazing, delicious mai tai made by celeste!

Absolutely our fav bar in Kona! The best bartenders around, the best regulars, and great karaoke. Celeste always has the best drink specials and fun jell-o shots. I almost don't recommend this bar to anyone to keep it all for myself!!!!

The place was very busy and quite loud, so we had to sit at a high top in the bar. No big deal! Our server was incredibly attentive and made some great recommendations. We decided to start with quest and chips, which was brought out very quickly and nice and hot. As we inhaled the quest and chips, we decided on fish tacos for me and a veggie burger for my husband. The fish tacos were wonderfully seasoned and cooked very well. The tortillas were a bit greasy, however, and I was very happy there were two tortillas to each taco since there was also a bit more drip than I expected from the pico. I also had fries, and the fries were excellent! The veggie burger was epic. This was the second veggie burger from this group of restaurants he has had, and I'm pretty sure it's his favorite in the area. Perfectly cooked and seasoned well, with great fries. It was very busy here, which is always a good sign. Just wish the music wasn't as loud because it's hard to have any sort of conversation. I did enjoy how involved the singer was with the other patrons, so it was amusing!

This may not be a great place for people who are looking for a night life, five star dining, or a busy shopping strip. This hotel is located next to a small road lined up with small restaurants and shops. Personally, we love it. We love it so much we have stayed here twice. Our kids enjoy the easy access from our room to the pool to the beach and back. We appreciate this place for it's simplicity. Our first visit we stayed on a regular floor and felt that some rooms needed a little refresh (although not terrible). Our second visit we stayed in the Marriott Bonvoy floor so the rooms were a little more refreshed (updated). We enjoyed the water refill station, all floors should have one. Staff - Staff has all been helpful and pleasant. Pool staff is the best. Pool - Our favorite place. We spend most of our time here. We love that they give you a wristband now so that it keeps out non-guests. Towels are passed out with a card given at check-in. It's easy and convenient. Pool staff walks around often and takes drink and food orders as needed. Beach chairs are a first come first serve basis, but we've never had an issue finding any. Beach - The convenience of having the beach at your fingertips is unmatched. My kids go from the beach to the pool multiple times a day. The beach is not usually crowded and you can find a spot to lay out a towel. If you would like to rent an umbrella and chair you can visit the rental booth right next to the beach - it is easy and convenient. If you are a hotel guest, you get one free rental (I don't remember the length) during your stay. This is a great snorkeling spot too and you can also rent a paddle board. We usually bring our own snorkeling gear, but renting is available too. Our kids are older and chose to snorkel near the port, but be aware the current/waves are stronger there. I would NOT recommend it for young kids, especially not without a vest. Food - We never ate at the restaurant. We grabbed coffee and breakfast from the coffee shop downstairs. It's pricey, but not bad considering the convenience. We also chose to walk across the street to eat breakfast and lunch. For dinner, we usually took a stroll down the main road to find a place to eat. There are PLENTY of options. Snow cone hours are odd at times, but if it's closed there is a great place across the street as a secondary option. There is an ABC store right next to the hotel. We opted to buy alcohol and snacks to keep in our room in our mini fridge. ___________________________________ MY CON: Sigh.... Our 2nd stay was during the TSUNAMI WARNING on July 29, 2025 - we didn't have a rental car until the next day so we had to rely on the hotel to relocate us to the local high school. It was also my child's birthday so we spent it evacuated. A lot of the guest who didn't have a car had to leave to the high school with no food and no water. We grabbed what we could and lined up for the bus. The ABC closed once the sirens went off, so we were left with no food. We were given NO instructions, we were only told to get on the bus and go. We had only ate breakfast and you can't imagine how hungry we were. No one had a car. No Ubers available. No restaurants open. We were lucky enough to find a worker who was kind enough to take my husband and another dad to a gas station to grab some items for our kids to eat. Yay to gas station sandwiches and Powerades. Once the emergency was cleared (10 hours later), we were allowed to come back to our hotel. Staff welcomed us back with a water bottle and a bag of chips (sigh). I was so annoyed by this gesture. I cannot explain why, because I shouldn't be - but I was. I am grateful and thankful that our family was safe. I am glad that we had the option to be bussed to the evacuation center. HOWEVER, in the future - staff should have an emergency plan in place to share with guest. There needs to be a form of communication for guest to receive updates. We were left with NO information, just dumped off. It was a very scary experience for us and having more details would have helped.

We got premium seating at $730 for three people. We had our own table at the front of the show, leis included ($10 if you do not purchase premium seating), and first service to the buffet. That's pretty much all of the bonus that comes with premium seating. We got our family photo taken, and it was a very beautiful photo. $25 to download the image without a watermark, $35 to get it printed. If you do choose to get the image, download it for $25 and get it printed at Walmart or CVS for $2. The staff who checked us in, seated us, and served us were all very friendly, chatty, and kind. They did a wonderful job. The dancers and band were wonderful, and I appreciate the dedication to describing what a luau resembles; an ancient Hawaiian royal feast. The pork was delicious, and being able to see it taken out of the ground was a really neat experience. Be sure to check in early (5pm for premium, 5:15 for standard) and be first in line to everything, because the line for the bar, tattoos, games and activities, and crowd around the pig build up fast. They have a wide variety of traditional Hawaiian dishes, familiar food for kids, seafood, pork, chicken, beef, sides, and desserts at the all you can eat buffet. Their drink menu is extremely limited; for $750 I would have expected access to Piña Coladas and dacharies, something blended. The teriyaki beef had good flavor but was very tough. Our session ended at 8. At 7pm, the event was called off because the rain was too heavy. This makes sense; there's a lot of danger for the dancers to be on such slippery floors, the buffet food had been soaked, no fire dancers could perform, etc. I understand they can't control the weather. We reached out and asked for a refund, and they offered for us to come back on Tuesday. That is not possible, as we fly out tonight (Monday). They say they do not offer refunds if rain causes the event to end early, and we are now in contact with management. Their choice to completely cancel the show instead of moving it inside or something of the sort was very disappointing, and our experience was not at all worth the almost $800 we spent. Review update; they gave us a 2/3 refund for the rain, which was much appreciated! Mahalo for the wonderful time. And yes, printed is $30 not $35, I had read the numbers wrong. We had a good time, but it would have been much better if a few tweaks were made. Mahalo for the friendly staff, great dancers, great band, good food, and education about Pacific Islander history! I hope to see some adjustments made for future guests to make the most of their time and money.
