Darling space and atmosphere! The food was good, the service was good... great little brunch spot!

Ambiance and service- 5 stars Food- 3 stars This was difficult to review due to the discrepancy between the ambiance and service and the food. My rating represents the food. I'm not sure if we went on an off day, or maybe the brunch is better, or I am just totally confused by other's reviews of the food. I was very excited to try this restaurant based on photos and reviews, and made a lunch reservation. The restaurant is as beautiful as the photos: covered patios surrounded by lush greenery, black and white checkered table clothes beneath unique chandeliers. The server, Haley, was just as fantastic. Unfortunately, it seems the attention was on the decor rather than the food (I wonder if brunch is better). My friend and I shared the coconut shrimp and the blackened fish tacos. The shrimp was standard good. The tacos were fine, they were not terrible, but pretty bland- and we ordered blackened so I expected some flavor. The flour tortillas showed signs of having been briefly toasted. I also think the fish portion was very small, but even that is a smaller complaint to the flavor. There was a basic cream on top, also not flavorful. The French fries on the side were at least average-good. Overall, I was very disappointed in the food. Do not order the fish tacos. The cocktails were pricy, but the same as similar restaurants in the area, and they were also fine. I would go for a cocktail to enjoy the ambience, as it truly is lovely. I cannot recommend the food. read more

Celebrated a friends bday here, Made a reservation, sat us at bar seating :( We didn't like that the server was yelling at the new 1st day hostess in front of us The poke tower & Caesar salad was good But the rip eye lacked flavor && it was chewy. Unfortunately, the last two times we've come this year have been disappointments. We live here and use to frequent a lot last year, but today on Mother's Day was a huge disappointment. Not sure what has happened from this year and the last few years. Erin is great and checking on people, but the quality of the food for Mother's Day was really bad. Waited 32 mins for lox on toast. Warm salmon on toast and a container of cream cheese. Overall, been here for 2 hours and service is friendly and kind and slow which is everywhere and we appreciate the faces who interact with us, but the quality of food was no good. The biscuits and gravy were horrible. It was crusty hard cold biscuits and meat, and the meat grease. Not even a gravy. I'm sorry and very sad to post this, but being local I am very disappointed and sad to have spent my money here. Ambiance and servers are always kind. The drinks are great!!! read more

This was our second visit to this restaurant. We were so impressed the first-time that we decided to return again on our yearly return to the Big Island. The setting is gorgeous. We asked again to be seated toward the back of the restaurant, where you hear the small waterfalls as the water flows beneath you. Christian, our server, was on top of everything with suggestions, excellent timing, and friendliness. The coconut shrimp tasted wonderful, the salad was crispy and fresh, and the fish and chips serving was larger than those we have tasted elsewhere. The breading was lighter, adding to the overall deliciousness of the dish. Our only regret was that the coffee shop next door closed early, where they make superb cups of coffee and chai tea. read more

Amazing location. Great food. This place has changed hands over the years but is still a great place that go.

This was our best meal on our trip! We started off with a delicious appetizer of tuna tartar, 2 kinds of ahi tuna (one sesame crusted and the other Cajun crusted) served with homemade wasabi and a great sauce on the side along with sweet potato chips. It was fabulous!!!!!! We had a wonderful view/table overlooking the water. The staff could not have been friendlier and the head chef Kai came out and talked to us which was extra special! The rest of us shared a bunch of entrees including eggs Benny, juevos rancheros, stuffed French toast, etc which were all wonderful. We ended with a yummy dessert (adding pics of all). They are also open for lunch and dinner (check hours on website). I don't review as much as I should anymore but this place was definitely worth it! Highly recommend!!! read more

Loved it here! All the people were so nice and friendly. I think our waiter was named Christian and he was awesome. Super chill and easy to talk to. The atmosphere was beautiful. I loved all the plants and chandeliers and cute glasses. We had a variety of food and drinks for our table (kona coffee, avocado toast, waffles with blueberries, stuffed French toast, country fried ribeye and eggs) and we were all happy with what we got. read more

Came here on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch. The setting is super cute, with a nice relaxing atmosphere and lots of different cozy spots to sit and enjoy. Unfortunately, the service was lacking. I always find it off-putting when you walk into a restaurant and aren't greeted right away, or when the hostess stand is empty, which was the case here. We were eventually greeted by the bartender, who was very nice but seemed to be juggling the bar and an entire section on his own. The place just didn't seem well-staffed. We waited about 40 minutes for our food, and I noticed other guests were also getting frustrated with the slow service. It's a shame because the food itself was good and filling. We ordered from the brunch menu: fish and chips, coconut shrimp, and chicken tenders, all tasty and well-prepared. Overall, the experience wasn't terrible, but it could have been so much better with a few small tweaks in staffing and attentiveness to match the lovely setting. read more

The food was great and the venue is very charming. Unfortunately, the server wasn't available throughout our hour and a half experience. We had to ask other staff to get our drinks, syrup for French toast, and to-go boxes. It was very underwhelming. I don't think the wait staff has a strong background in the food service industry. They all appear to be a little lost and slow moving around the dining room. Hopefully they can sort it out in the future! read more

This is our second month long trip to Hawaii. Holualoa garden and kitchen is the best food we have eaten on the island! We were impressed by quality, portions and fair prices. Staff was friendly and kind. Must eat here if you are on the big island read more

My daughter made a reservation for here for Brunch today. We arrived and were promptly seated. Love that the restaurant still retains that great open air relaxed vibe. Absolutely adore the decor and seating. We ordered the coconut margaritas and they were so tasty. I had the ceasar salad with a burger patty on top they have other options as well. My daughter had the huevos rancheros with an add beef patty and it was delicious. Didn't need the patty as the verde pork on top was really tasty and the portions were great. Would recommend for lunch, brunch or dinner. Great service and beautiful ambiance. Would be great for location for larger events as well. read more

Easily the worst meal of our ten-day trip, and I'm including the airplane food. We found ourselves picking through our plates, hunting for anything remotely edible. Everything was bland, limp, stale, flavorless, or some sad combination of these. Even the avocado in my poke bowl didn't taste right. The drinks were weak and forgettable, offering no distraction from the failure on our plates. Why two stars? The bathrooms are great. read more

Wonderful dinner experience at HGK. Made a reservation in the AM as we had coffee next door at White Ne Ne coffee truck. We were seated outdoors near the bar and had prompt, friendly service from the very nice staff. All 3 of us had the seared Ahi catch of the day which was delicious and beautifully presented. Musician was playing and singing in the background which was nice and not overwhelming. This is a great spot up on the mountain slope to get away from the busy coastal area and have a chill, relaxing, delicious evening. read more

I came here for breakfast with my family. This place has a great vibe! The food is great and the service is top tier. I personally had the original Benny which was great. We also ordered the Belgium waffle and stuffed French toast - we all shared and everything was fantastic, especially the French toast!! To quote my daughter, "the best French toast I've ever had" The restaurant is beautiful with chandeliers under a well covered area with outdoor tables and plants. The bar area also looks great and I am looking forward to coming in the evening to have some drinks! read more

Please listen to me, DO NOT COME HERE unless you want to be disappointed. I am a big foodie and I made an account just to write this review. The meal pictured was over $100 after tip. We ordered the cheeseburger, shrimp ceviche, and fish and chips. The burger and fish and chips were okay. They had nothing special and the portions were the tiniest portions ever. I'll let that slide. But the shrimp ceviche - this was $25. There were maybe two shrimps max. The chips were so stale and oily so we asked for new chips. They gave us the chips after we finished the meal. I've had my fair share of disappointing meals but the fact that we were hungry after paying over $100 is outrageous. The restaurant is pretty but that's about it. Service was bad as well, couldn't get my water refilled once although we asked a few times (they looked severely understaffed). This was such an upsetting experience I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Excellent service from Christian and Alison today for brunch. Our burgers and pork quesadilla was excellent, and cocktails were exquisite! Mango Fuego was delicious with jalapeño infused tequila. The coco passionfruit mojito was also very refreshing. Cute decor, open ambiance. I love the cups and the peacock chairs. Low visibility today of the ocean, but still a great experience. Holualoa Garden and Kitchen - great local place for breakfast lunch/brunch or dinner. Friendly, attentive service. Fresh produce, and a full bar. Holualoa itself, is a great place to chill and visit local shops in the hillside community. Holualoa Kitchen adds to the local vibe and often has entertainment/music at night. The overall setting is clean and refreshing with plenty of room and an ocean view. It's located at a comfortable elevation, with a nice breeze. We ordered their Avocado toast with a poached egg - excellent. Also have enjoyed their burger with a double patty. They have occasional specials such as a Loco Moco which was awesome! Another great lunch at Holualoa Garden & Kitchen. Enjoyed the Fish Tacos and a Margarita, served up by Derek; Mr. Aloha hisself and finished off with Espresso from Christian. These two are some of the authentically "local boys" who really share their mana'o and local knowledge. So epic. Not to mention the really cool vibe in the outdoor covered garden. I realized, I do Like the minimalist menu; it makes it easy to choose and everything is made with local ingredients. The Huevos Rancheros is awesome and once again, all businesses are short on staff so what happens is the ones who show up; Derek and Christian are doing double time and double duty. Went here for dinner on a Friday night during the art show and it was underwhelming. The ambiance of this place was awesome, there was great live music and they had some really good drink selections. Those are the only highlights though. Don't go here for the dinner food or during extremely busy times. The restaurant is not equipped to handle large rushes. It took 25 minutes just to have our drink order taken. We waited over a hour until we got our food and our drinks, though delicious, took 20 minutes to be served. If you're an average at home cook you can make just as good of food as we had last night. There was nothing special about the food at all, it sounds interesting on the menu but it was very basic when it was served. I would only recommend going here for the drinks and live music. Skip the food and the headache of having to wait forever to eat your meal. read more

This place is heavenly! It's an open air restaurant and bar with beautiful landscape and decor. Bar is laid back, server Derek was hip as Hell... at least to us two oldies! I liked the comradery of the coworkers and the friendly conversation with us! Drinks are great, Pink Palace was pink deliciousness! The location is up in Holualoha which is a cute artisan town up the hill from Kailua and no parking fees! Temps are cooler and we had a wonderful, dreamy rainfall the night we visited! Be sure to call to verify your reservation. Online reservation system does not work well with their in house system. Our party of 10 had a great experience with a table to ourselves on the top floor. Our waitress was fantastic. She attended to everyone of our needs. The food was very well prepared and tasted delish. You cannot have a better ambiance. The tropical setting with anthurium table arrangements was perfect. Being there to experience a Hawaiian sunset was also a tremendous plus. read more

So.... I want to LOVE this restaurant because the ambience is soooo nice but it kind of ends there. I've been several times for dinner and each time has let me down. I've had the NY Strip and it was tough and over cooked (not how I ordered it). The coconut shrimp we've tried twice and it's like they got them from Safeways frozen food section. Not impressive AT ALL! Tonight we went with friends from out of town. The only fish choice they offered was Ahi. Ahi for everything including the fish tacos and fish and chips. Not everyone likes Ahi. There should have been a white fish as an alternative for dishes like fish tacos and fish and chips. The ahi tacos were available in a choice of ways. It was the only good thing we ate tonight. The "fresh" oysters didn't taste fresh and at $25 for 4... ridiculous! Wine choices are basic. Beer choices are better. One thing that really bothers me is that when you call it's only a recording and no person is available to take the call. The voicemail states to go to their website for their menu. When you do, it only shows 2 choices for breakfast! I expect better! It seems this restaurant is in dire need of a decent chef, better training for servers (they are super nice but not great at checking in) as well as maybe a better restaurant manager to tighten things up a bit all around. The ambience is great but it's becoming junky. They had black and white checkered table cloths on the tables tonight and it looked messy and busy. There was live music... he was great, HOWEVER... it was far too loud. We sat at the opposite end of the restaurant and still could not hear each other talk at our table. If they dialed the volume down a bit... it would greatly enhance the dining experience! Food here is too expensive to be this mediocre! It will probably be my last visit. I suggest going for drinks but skipping any meal or app here. read more

This restaurant is an absolute gem -- the setting is stunning, with a beautiful atmosphere that perfectly complements its prime, cool location. I ordered the French toast coated in Fruity Pebbles, and it was both fun and delicious -- crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with just the right amount of sweetness.
