The cafe is located about 10 miles from the entrance to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and we made our stop here first before heading to the park. It has a secret zen garden and two resident bunnies that you can spot if you're lucky. They have an art gallery/shop featuring work from local artists. Stunning pieces of work! The cafe itself is so cozy and has outdoor seating as well. We got their daily special - which was a chickpea coconut curry with a side of rice. It came with a soup (miso or corn and potato chowder, a side salad and garlic bread). Everything was vegan and so warm and filling. The cafe however does serve vegetarian and vegan options. I'd definitely recommend this as a stop before you head into the park. We'll definitely be back. read more

After what felt like a long half day at Volcanoes National Park nearby, my husband and I were looking for a little pick-me-up before heading back to the park after dark. We found Cafe Ono online, but realized it was closing soon. We decided to stop by anyway to check out Volcano Garden Arts, if anything, and we are so glad we did. The staff working at the cafe were so kind and still hooked us up with some caffeine, even though they were technically already closed - we really appreciated that. We got our coffee (good but nothing extraordinary tbh) and a snack, chatted a bit with the owner, and then decided to explore the grounds instead of sitting indoors the entire time. It was so fun to wander through the little shop (with their "please touch" policy) and gallery, check out the outdoor dining areas, meet one of the famous NZ bunnies (I think there were supposed to be 2 though..?), and walk through their forest and gardens. Even on a slightly rainy and damp day, the outdoor walk was enjoyable. The space is whimsically decorated with art, sculptures, and local products for sale, and at times it gave off an Alice in Wonderland vibe. We're not sure when we'll be back in this area or on Big Island in general, but if/when we are I'd love to return and explore again. read more

Ira Ono's poured heart and soul into it, and it shows in everything from the gift shop stocked with local art treasures to the moss-lined paths and stone sculptures that weave through the lush, misty Volcano landscape. It's just five minutes from the National Park, making it a perfect lunch stop. The food is fresh and cozy--think soups, sandwiches, pastries--all feel-good picks. I definitely suggest making a reservation if you're going during busier times. But what makes it magical are all the extras: the secret garden walk, saying hi to the bunnies, and wandering into the tucked-away bamboo meditation grove. We stopped in for lunch last Saturday and it was all so wonderful! The lovely lady (forgot to get her name) at the counter was a true delight, so very kind. She chose a lovely table in the garden for us to enjoy our meal, delivering our ice cold waters before we even got outside. Food came out quickly. I had the Hearty Home Style Baked Lasagna which was sooo good as was everything included: tortilla chips that I generally don't care for yet wowww were they light n' crispy, a side salad with the famous house made mustard dressing, miso mushroom soup and buttered warm homemade garlic nut bread. My friends chose the Crust-less Cheese Spinach Quiche and raved how light and flavorful it was. I couldn't resist taking home a coconut macaroon...and I am so grateful I did as I've never had one as awesome as this!!! Spent the weekend up in Volcano and Cafe Ono was recommended. The first day, we got there almost Closing time for cafe but we got to check out the gallery that is an amazing find filled with so many different pieces from local artists. Went back the next day for lunch and was really impressed. I'm not vegan but I love LOVED my meal. I got the open faced egg salad sandwich which came with a hearty curry lentil soup for starters. The sandwich was plates with toss greens and chips. Sooooo ono! I wish I had room for dessert as I would've grabbed me a brownie for the drive home. By chance, we ran into some very nice locals at the Cooper Center and struck up a conversation. During our conversation, the gentleman casually mentioned that he owned a restaurant in Volcano (called Cafe Ono) and suggested we check out. He mentioned the vegetarian offerings, the surrounding gardens, etc. Since we had no plans, we decided to have brunch/lunch there the next day. As you pull into the driveway of Cafe Ono, you'll notice right away that it is not your ordinary restaurant. There is definitely an artsy, Alice in Wonderland feel to the place - which my wife and daughters LOVED. The surrounding gardens are beautiful and full of various sculptures, including a tea cup garden. Great setting. Make sure to spend time exploring and appreciating before or after your meal. I am happy to be an omnivore and have no plans to change. However, I'm also and equal opportunity eater and love all kinds of food and the vegetarian offerings at Cafe Ono were delicious. I ordered the vegetarian lasagne, but my twin daughters swooped in an claimed most of it, including the garlic bread. We also tried the gluten free quiche, vegetable soup, lentil curry and carrot cake. EVERYTHING was great! No complaints from my 12 year old picky eaters - which is unheard of!!! This was a gorgeous garden setting restaurant we had lunch at. I haven't been to the Big Island in years and had no clue where to eat. When in doubt, look on Yelp! A lot of places were touristy, what I go straight for the menu items and food pictures. This place looked good and less crowded than some touristy places, so we decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we chose this place! The restaurant is like a garden/art gallery house that serves food! Their eating area inside is small. However, they do have lots of eating tents outside. We chose to eat on their back balcony. The whole time I was admiring all the art pieces. If you don't feel like eating, definitely stop by to purchase some of the art pieces. LOCATION: It's kinda like a hidden gem in Volcano. I would use your GPS to find this place, its not that hard to find. When you get there, their parking lot isn't marked, however, just pull your car to the side of the other cars in the area, I'm sure you can figure it out. SERVICE: Everyone there is sooooooooo welcoming! They gave us a choice on where we wanted to eat, we chose the balcony that overlooks a garden out back. FOOD: Their menu items are vegan. Don't let that stop you from trying it. Their food is actually very delicious and filling! My boyfriend at the time, now ex-boyfriend is a carnivore... however, he really enjoyed his meal. He chose the daily special which was a Mexican Burrito and I chose the Pesto Artichoke Panini. It came with salad, soup, side bread and his had a brownie! We devoured our entire plate. After we were done eating we decided to walk around the art gallery. We started talking to this guy and later found out he was the owner! Ira Ono gave us a little history of his place and he was very welcoming and sweet. He told us to check out the Tree Sanctuary out back. I guess a bunch of people get married out there. We missed coming here on our last trip but this time we decided to reschedule our entire itinerary around its limited hours just so we wouldn't miss a meal LOL. After lunch we walked around the gardens and into the new 'rain forest' that was abundant with bromeliads, then did some shopping at the art gallery on its premise. I'm not sure how we found Cafe Ono, but it was such a great find after visiting Volcanoes National Park. Literally, 5 minutes down the road. It is a quaint spot tucked into the back of an art gallery and backyard gardens (it was raining, so we stayed inside). We really wished we'd had time to explore, but we got there just before closing, so we were very thankful they allowed us to dine with them. The lasagna may have been the best lasagna I've ever had and the homemade balsamic vinaigrette was spectacular. The brownie. After spending the morning hiking at Volcano National Park, Cafe Ono hit the spot. The property is so beautiful and green, and there is a good amount of outdoor seating available. The guy who owns the restaurant is definitely proud of what he is serving and was super welcoming and friendly. He wanted us to take a look around the garden, and we saw a very cute bunny! Everything on their menu sounded so delicious, but we decided on the homemade vegetarian pizza and the hearty home style baked lasagna. I loved how many sides came with the meal (salad, soup, chips, and a cookie). The food was delicious - it had a lot of flavor and tasted like something my grandma would make. We were skeptical at first after checking out the menu on yelp since the food seem so "healthy" and light. We went anyways and it was the best decision. The restaurant is cute with well spaced out tables in the garden area. They also have tables inside the shop but it felt quite cozy. Friendly, good service. I am not into vegetarian, vegan or gluten free food so I did had a hard time choosing my order. To my surprise and everyone else in the group the food was so delicious. We ordered different things off the menu and everything tasted great and fresh. My husband got the lasagna (it's good!) that included soup, salad + bread. We both loved what we got and it inspires me to eat thoughtfully made food like this more often. Make sure you get a peek inside the art store while you're there, lots of locally made items from Hawaiian artists & crafters, garden decorations and jewelry. We met the owner Ira Ono, who was very easy to talk to and seems like someone who truly cares about the food he serves people and seems like a true artist who has created a beautiful establishment overall. Before we left we were invited to explore the garden path if we wanted. We walked through a latched gate and found a very inspiring, peaceful garden that I could easily spend some time in. And last but not least we found the happiest bunny rabbits in Hawaii frolicking around in the cutest bunny hutch ever. It made my day! I wish we had found this place sooner on our stay in Hawaii as I would've gone back more than once! It's tucked away on Old Volcano Rd, behind the "Volcano Garden Arts" store which is right off of Mamalahoa Highway (11). So unique and a highlight of our stay in the Volcano area. read more
