Spring rolls

Best pineapple Thai seafood curry!!! It's super delicious. If you're in the national park, must visit. We ordered take out and ate in the park but it's a full sized restaurant with seating. Spring rolls were heavenly!

Best cosmo.

A great find outside of Volcanos National Park. Family run. Incredible service, super clean and great food. One of the best Cosmos I've ever had-superb. Don't miss this gem. They also have a "Western Menu" in case you have picky eaters in your group. Love this place.

I've been looking for nice Asian food for my parents while traveling in Big island. I could choose restaurants very limited because they have very picky tastes. They wanted try American or Italian or Chinese or etc but seems like they didn't really like it. I found this place on the Yelp. Looks nice My family was enjoying this place food. Maybe we choose great menu. I really recommend this place whoever visit volcano area. Papaya salad was really great and this is my all the time favorite menu anywhere else but this place papaya salad was outstanding. Tom yam soup also outstanding but a bit small plate. Pad Thai was great too. Thai iced tea was so so. Very big restaurant but very quiet place. Our waitress was super friendly. Definitely go back this place again if I travel to here again.

A classic third generation owned and operated Thai restaurant. Pride in quality authentic Thai cuisine and cleanliness. This is by far the best Thai restaurant on island. I live two hours away; as a lifetime resident I am not in a hurry to grab and go my dining offerings. I love to sit inside; look at the photos of the family history and smell the smells of fresh lemon grass, bayleaf and all of the aromatics used in this scrumptious bowl of Thom Gah Soup. The sticky rice is divine. Service from Pan and family, precise. Slow food. Be kind. These are beautiful people with Aloha. I will always return time and again to Thai Thai Bar and Bistro. The finest authentic Thai island-wide.

This is a weekly spot for us. It's my comfort food. It's my safe place. This place is pricy! But If you are visiting the park you don't have many options in the area. Dishes are full of flavor. Plenty of food to fill you up. All the meats are ono. Shrimps are huge and they give you a lot of them. Chicken is tender and delicious. Mahi is good as well. Firm white fish. Small hot is quite spicy. some days are hotter than others. Highly recommend the soups. My only complaint is getting 1/3 of the container aromatics. For $25 I would be able to eat all of it. The fried wontons and spring rolls are NOT worth it in my opinion.

Chicken pad thai

Overpriced for mediocre Thai food but they are one of the only restaurant to still be open in the evening. The Thai iced tea was delicious but the food was not. I had the chicken pad thai which was average and bland. My partner had the pad kee mao but beware that their medium spicy is very spicy.

pad thai, green papaya salad
Sarah C.

we got the green papaya salad ($17) and the pad thai ($25) and unfortunately I wouldn't say they were worth the 40 minute wait (takeout only). the pad thai was kind of hard and so was the green papaya. bonus points for the huge portions though

Amazing food and excellent service! The mahi mahi green curry was full of flavor, and we loved the crispy spring rolls so much we ordered another to go. The staff was friendly and welcoming awesome hospitality and cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Tastes good but pricey. Still much better than the food trucks in the area though. If you are in volcano, I think a visit is worth it.

We enjoyed the mushroom ginger soup, which was flavorful and and a soup and fresh green salad combo. Everything was delicious, flavorful, and just right. And the pricing was affordable. Woo hoo! We found Cafe Ono online, but realized it was closing soon. We decided to stop by anyway to check out Volcano Garden Arts, if anything, and we are so glad we did. The staff working at the cafe were so kind and still hooked us up with some caffeine, even though they were technically already closed - we really appreciated that. We got our coffee (good but nothing extraordinary tbh) and a snack, chatted a bit with the owner, and then decided to explore the grounds instead of sitting indoors the entire time. It was so fun to wander through the little shop (with their "please touch" policy) and gallery, check out the outdoor dining areas, meet one of the famous NZ bunnies (I think there were supposed to be 2 though..?), and walk through their forest and gardens. Even on a slightly rainy and damp day, the outdoor walk was enjoyable. The space is whimsically decorated with art, sculptures, and local products for sale, and at times it gave off an Alice in Wonderland vibe. We're not sure when we'll be back in this area or on Big Island in general, but if/when we are I'd love to return and explore again.

In spite of that, service is normally knowledgeable and friendly, extensive menu options, and served family style. I'm hooked on their steam dumplings, but I'm also a sucker for cilantro and onions, ask for it on the side or without if the people you're sharing with aren't fans lol. Recently got the summer rolls, pleasantly surprised by the portion size and the peanut sauce was so good we wiped the bowl clean; I like that it was on the thicker/chunkier side instead of too runny. You can never go wrong with the pad thai, perfectly coated and seasoned. Their red curry is perfect with a side of sticky rice (not included with curry order) and their eggplant stir fry was soft in a delectable sauce. Seriously can't go wrong with any options here. They also have alcoholic drinks, great sounding options but they have a heavy pour if you're into that.

When we finally were addressed, we requested to sit by the window to which verse told that we could not because the table was dirty. It did not look dirty, but he sat elsewhere. Have to replace our order random extra empty plates, bowls and serving and soup arrived that we never ordered and had no use. When the food arrived, we noticed that they were large portions. However, I would've preferred small portions with a steer food.. The lrad-nar/gravynoodles dish while we requested a no heat dish, we did not expect a no spice dish which tasted overwhelmingly of vinegar. The "medium" (6/10) spiced pad kee mao was barely a 2/10 level. Both came with thin, dried, packaged noodles that were unappealing. The pad kee mao lacked real basil flavor and fresh elements and felt bland and bare-bones cafeteria style . The rad-nar was a salty, vinegary gravy and simply not edible. To top it off, locals began arguing and pulling other diners into the conflict, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The wait staff who were asked to interview ran off and ignored issues. I simply can not recommend this restaurant.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

The woman behind the counter was very friendly and kind which can be difficult to find in this busy tourist town. Thank you so much! We were there Nov 10. The ambiance is casual. The seating area is outside underneath an awning. There are world maps outside so you can pin the location you're from. The food is very good value especially for Hawaii. I paid about $12 each for a sandwich that was packed with fresh ingredients. It can be hard to find good value meals around Volcano. This sandwich came with packets of mayo and mustard on the side. I appreciated they didn't add this to the sandwich beforehand. Honestly, if you're on the Big Island, you probably know by now how expensive fresh veggies are. These veggies were delicious and good quality. I've had trouble finding such good quality veggies even at higher price points. I hope they never change their selection because I thought the fresh veggie sandwich was great for the value. It was big and very filling. Again, I wish I had caught the name of the young 5'2ish woman serving me. Someone on the Big Island offered me a job because they said it was hard to find someone reliable to show up for a job at a gas station. They thought I was a local. Well, this woman was very helpful and friendly despite the long line of customers. Hope someone gives her a raise if she's an employee, because it sounds like good employees are tough to come by and she was definitely great.

So the Eagles Lighthouse Cafe is no more. Let this be a eulogy then. For starters, let's go with…read morethe praise. The food was great. Nice down home cookin', reasonably priced. Now for this. The place was festooned with Bible quotes, Biblical vignettes in the windows, and the three flags of Christian Nationalism garishly out front - the US flag, the Israeli flag, and the nationalist "Plea To Heaven" flag. All paradoxically in tatters and never taken in for good keeping. It did not give off a welcome Biblical vibe though - just one of "agree with us or take it down the road." The kitchen and counter personnel were usually fairly nice people who gave great service. The owners, when they were present, gave off something entirely different. Like you were inconveniencing them by being there. Short tempered and terse if they took your order. If you read the earlier comments, you will hear of them coming unhinged and screaming at some customer about something either overblown, or imagined. They refused to pay their employees properly, with something even close to a living wage. When the Hawaii legislature finally hiked the minimum wage, they stuck out an alarmist notice written in childish green marker that they were sooooo sorry but they "had to" raise their prices a bit because the mean old Hawaii house raised the wage. And of course taxes under Biden, yada yada. In the end, the ELC was a victim of the owners' disposition. It's a very bad business model indeed, when politics, religion and greed actually get in the way of doing business. My best wishes to the employees, I really hope they can find something decent to replace this experience. For the self righteous, sanctimonious greed of the owners and operators - as Jesus said, "Yeah verily, you have your reward."
