I've been looking for nice Asian food for my parents while traveling in Big island. I could choose restaurants very limited because they have very picky tastes. This is a weekly spot for us. It's my comfort food. It's my safe place. This place is pricy! But If you are visiting the park you don't have many options in the area. Dishes are full of flavor. Plenty of food to fill you up. All the meats are ono. Shrimps are huge and they give you a lot of them. Chicken is tender and delicious. Mahi is good as well. Firm white fish. Small hot is quite spicy. some days are hotter than others. Highly recommend the soups. My only complaint is getting 1/3 of the container aromatics. For $25 I would be able to eat all of it. Went there on a recent visit to Volcano. We were seated quickly just after opening and the proceeded to wait 15+ minutes to order. Once we ordered off the tiny limited menu we then waited over 30 minutes for spring rolls and then another 15 or so for sweet and sour chicken. The spring rolls were good. The chicken was a bunch of raw vegetables, some chicken (maybe 3oz) and ketchup. Yes ketchup. It was horrible. Horrible. Used to be good, but the menu has changed to a very limited selection. The kitchen won't do anything to help your experience such as adjusting the vegetables in a dish. Also VERY EXPENSIVE for Thai food compared to any other Thai restaurant on the island. We live here and have tried them all. Take a sweater or a jacket because it can be chilly inside. We patiently waited, and when we finally sat down for service I asked the waitress, if they had vegan options because Yelp said they do. After being told everything either has fish oils or some type of oyster sauce. My last resort was the papaya salad, and she said that's made with an oyster dressing. I asked if they could make it just without the dressing and she said the cooks will not alter or accommodate any changes to the menu. The waitress could have at least asked but she didn't even care to try. We wanted to love this place! Unfortunately they appeared to be under-staffed and they forgot about the people they seated in the bar. I came in just after 6pm on a week night and asked about placing a take out order. I was informed that the kitchen was running about 20 minutes behind, which I agreed to, expecting for my order to be taken right away. The host asked me to sit in the bar, which I did. A server came and attended to there couple who were already there, taking their order and refreshing their drinks. Assuming best intentions, she may have thought I was already helped, which is why she didn't make eye contact. As several servers came through the bar to get items for their customers, 20+ minutes passed. When someone finally looked at me, she asked, 'you've been helped, right?'. When I said no, she told me she'd be back to take my take out order. She was kind and helpful, offered me water while she took my order. What's not to like? The food is fabulous, service is friendly and prompt, and the restaurant is well cared for. We have been here many times over the years and are never disappointed. We were on the Hilo side of the island for several nights and had dinner here twice. For the first time, we had the tapioca pudding. This was amazing and unlike any other tapioca we've had before. They are open for lunch and dinner with an hour break in between. Whether you are staying in Hilo or Kona, this is a great place to go meal. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Good food, but VERY spendy. After a day hiking around Volcano National Park we were really hungry and Thai food sounded good so we decided to check it out. As we sat down and perused the menu, we experienced sticker shock at the prices--this was some of the most expensive Thai food prices we'd seen anywhere, but considering that this was the only Thai game in the very small and remote town of Volcano, it made some sense. I got the Thai iced coffee and shrimp wonton soup with egg noodles, and hubs got the Thai iced tea and pad Kee mow noodles with tofu. Everything was good, and they had a legit homemade-looking spicy garlic chili oil which threw some welcome heat on the pretty mild dishes, but I can't say it was the best Thai food we've ever had. If you love curry dishes, get the Thai Thai special! During our stay at the Volcano park, we tried this place for dinner. A bit busy on a Sunday night. We waited about 20 mins to be seated and another 10-15 for our food. Granted they are the only Asian restaurant in the area, they provided great service and food. The only down side were the prices. This place is some of the best Thai food I've had. You might question the outside but as soon as you walk through the doors you will be greeted with smiles and amazing service. We have now eaten here three times. Between the four in our party, we ordered quite a variety of things. A common problem is one person likes things Thai hot. Another person likes them with no hot. So I asked the server if he could bring the shared items mild and just the dish that I was alone ordering Thai hot . And I asked if I could get whatever made it hot as opposed to mild on the side so chili peppers flakes garlic chili sauce whatever it is they use just a little on the side for me . He says no problem I'll do it . So we wait for our food and when it starts to come out, that's when problems occur. First of all, bring everything at once appetizers soup salad, entrées there's hardly room at the table. And frankly, we would like to have had the appetizers first then the soup then the salad then the entrées in that order so we could enjoy them leisurely not worry about them getting cold or feeling rushed. So I reminded the server that he was supposed to bring me some heat on the side. He responded that he would get it for me, but he sounded nervous. When you come back, he put down a little saucer, full of what looked like hin sauce with a very tiny sprinkling of very old chili flakes. I taste the stuff with my finger and it's actually sweet not hot at all. And at that point I had also had the opportunity to taste the dish that was supposed to be Thai hot. It had zero hot. So I asked the waiter for the right stuff to heat it up and now he tells me oh no they don't give that stuff out like it's some kind of a secret. Frankly, if I had known, I wasn't going to be able to have my Thai food Thai hot I would've ordered the cheeseburger instead. I feel like he lied to me. I feel like based on what he said, in addition to his lie that the owners and managers of the place are very arrogant and think that you should just eat it the way they want to cook it. Even though they agreed to bring it out, they'll just bring it out however they want and you have no choice. Aside from this, my wife and I agreed pretty much everything was not good. The Tom guy was just boiled water with the cut up ingredients thrown into steep, no flavor no heat no nothing we didn't eat it. Sweet-and-sour chicken it had like no chicken. The chicken was almost shredded. It was so small pieces. Somebody asked me for a place a piece. I had to hand them so they could look at it and try and find a tiny little piece. And the sweet-and-sour sauce was not like sweet-and-sour sauce I've had at proper Thai restaurants. I've been to Bangkok by the way. I don't think the people that run this place are actually at all. So our friends like going here and they do have one good dish we will make a point of never returning at this point. It's just too insulting. Oh, and I almost forgot I didn't notice till much later when I looked at my receipt, but I was billed for something that I did not order. read more
