Love this little place. The sushi is delicious. I'm a creature of habit so I usually stick to the salmon lava, unagi and rainbow rolls. The fish is fresh, the fried roll isn't ever over cooked and the portions are generous. The staff is always really kind and grateful. Not sure how they ended up as a pickup window but I'm happy to get to support them and enjoy yummy sushi without having to drive to Hilo. read more

Okay I'm have to give a four star only because I feel it's a shame they don't really have their space reading for in house dining! Not saying we haven't dinned inside but they have a pop up dinner tray for ordering at the door. I believe they have more business and thrive if they made their space inside inviting and open for the local families and visitors to find some rest and inviting environment that could really show off their Ono grinds! The sushi was impressive. When I was handed my to go boxes of sushi rolls I was pleasantly surprised that it had weight meaning that I got some "beefy" sushi to enjoy. Am really glad I gave the place a shot. I will continue to order when in need of sushi! It appears to be mostly to go now, although it looked like there was s tourist family sitting inside, and when it was time to pay chef told me to come in. I recommend this place! Ordered a fried oyster plate, two hamachi sashimis, one spicy hamachi gunkan, one spicy ahi gunkan and one unagi nigiri. Bill came out to $66.50. Solid, reasonably priced sushi with a large (if hard to find online) menu. Stars allocated taking into consideration the location/alternatives. Not accounting for Chicago, LA, NY, or SF sushi experiences - take a breath, enjoy the island air and the chill vibe, and scale expectations accordingly. We don't have traffic or blaring sirens or Michelin stars - look for solid options with friendly service. Anticipate a bit of a wait - it's a small spot and sushi is not fast. Chillax - it's Hawaii ;) Had spicy scallop & avocado futomaki and a sunshine roll - rice was not gummy or overly sweet (two personal peeves), but be warned there is quite a bit of it. If you are looking for sleek, Manhattan basement style rolls - these are not they. These rolls are filling, feature very fresh fish, and are made for the middle segment, spice wise. If you want truly spicy fish, you'll have to ask for it. Or slather wasabi on it. Ate with a group in which everyone was happy. I overheard that the Miso is bomb. This is a nice small restaurant with a homey vibe. Everyone is very nice, but the food does take a while to get there, even if you're the only ones there. On the other hand, this allows for nice conversation before the meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant is not fancy in any way, but it has its own charm. It is a quiet, mellow place and we even saw a gecko on the wall which we enjoyed. The food was pretty good. The specialty rolls were great, but some other foods not so much. Their miso soup was not tasty, and the salmon skin salad was more of a fried fish salad. Wow!! This place keeps getting better and better. I can confidently say that this is the best sushi restaurant on the Bigisland. I've been coming here for years and it's so nice to eat at a place where the food is consistent in regard to taste. Today I ordered the spicy tuna bowl and added tempura on top. Bruhhhhhh. Upon entering I was greeted immediately and the lady that took my order was nice but the rice was gummy and it took over 30 minutes for me to receive my food but I did eat all of it so there you have it 4 Stars ... I won't highly recommend like I usually do so this location would be your choice to choose and besides I don't know of any other place that sell sushi in Pahoa so this may be your best choice. I ordered a Dragon Roll. It was the worst sushi roll I ever had: The order took 30 minutes but when I entered I was the only customer. One take-out call did come in just as I was about to order. 2. The soft shell crab resembled a real soft shell crab in no way. It did not look, taste, or smell like one. It was fried to a dark brown, almost black hard lump. I could not tell if it was real, but my guess was it was not. There were no visible crab parts like claws, etc. 3. There was so little eel on top I could hardly find it. and the bbq sauce on the eel was horrible. It tasted like supermarket bottled sauce, and was smothered so thickly it dominated the tiny thin eel pieces. 4. The rest of the roll consisted of mostly rice. The vegetable ingredients were hard to see or taste. 5. It was covered, in little crispy things that looked and tasted like onions like grandma used to put on a green bean casserole that had no place on a sushi role. 6. The roll was poorly assembled and sloppily cut. It unrolled when carefully picked up with chopsticks. The pieces ranged from very thin to so fat they could not be eaten in one bite. I cannot tell you about the rest of the food here but this was so bad I will not bother to find out. read more

i recently tried the scallops and was so pleased with it! the scallops came with rice and nice fresh tossed green salad. Good value, i don't remember how many scallops but enough that i could generously share with my hubby who had two orders of two different sushi rolls. The atmosphere is cute and inviting considering it's at the end of a strip mall. No air conditioning the night that I went there. I would give the service 1 star and the sushi 3 stars, which is the reason for my 2-star rating. The server barely spoke english and passed us on the water refill (but turned around, scanned the room and caught my eye-contact and then refilled our water). One word of great advice my boyfriend had from a bad experience was DO NOT make eye-contact or talk to the little boy that is hanging around in the restaurant. My boyf and his friend ate there, started talking to the little boy, and he didn't leave them alone for the remainder of their lunch. His parents didn't seem to care that he was basically bothering their customers. Not to be mean and say that you shouldn't pay attention to kids, but their experience was a little too much...and they both love kids!! I agree with the reviewer before me...don't sit down and expect your food there in a blink. It's going to take a good 15-20 minutes. You'll have to be very patient and have a lot of time free if you want you eat here. It seemed like there was only one guy making the sushi in the front. After we were finished with our meal our bill didn't come and really didn't look like it would be coming anytime soon, so we had to go up and pay it. We were there at around 6:00/6:30 pm on a weekday night and there were about 6 other people eating in the restaurant. My wife and I and other family have become fans of Mighty Sushi. It is not a sophisticated place with great decor and smooth fast service. But it is a friendly casual small Hawaiian town restaurant with good food and has pretty good prices. They aren't the fastest, true, but it's a lot better than getting something wrapped in plastic from the market! We've become regulars, this is a nice place to eat. Ocean Sushi in Hilo may be a little better, but it's great that we have a sushi place this good in Pahoa. read more

I moved to Hawaii and have been searching for sushi spots to go to that are Celiac friendly. So far I found 2, Ebisuya in Hilo and now Mighty Sushi in Pahoa. It is in a strip mall like location, but don't let that stop you. The sushi is very fresh. The portions are ample and reasonably priced. The owner/sushi chef is very nice and was accommodating to my requests that everything had to be gluten free. My husband loved the unagi hand roll and his Hamachi roll. The red rose roll was yumminess yum and so was the Kani roll,which had real crab! The misogyny soup was traditional and hot. Our server was very sweet with a gorgeous smile. We felt taken care of without the feeling of hovering or over soliticing one finds in most places. The place is clean and quiet,allowing for low conversation with out the need to yell. This my favorite place now for sushi and it doesn't hurt that it's only 12 minutes from our house. read more

After asking a few locals about this sushi restaurant, and getting great reviews I decided to try it. The outside and lack of decor inside make it a little uninviting but we were so glad we went! We ordered the seaweed salad, Imari and 4 different sushi rolls. Everything was well made and tasted good. Plenty of ingredients in the rolls and it all tasted fresh. I did think the spicy tuna could have been spicier, though. We will be back now that we know it's a hidden treasure. read more
