The sushi was impressive. When I was handed my to go boxes of sushi rolls I was pleasantly surprised that it had weight meaning that I got some "beefy" sushi to enjoy. Am really glad I gave the place a shot. I will continue to order when in need of sushi! It appears to be mostly to go now, although it looked like there was s tourist family sitting inside, and when it was time to pay chef told me to come in. I recommend this place! I also liked the massive amount of roll options they have created.

Absolutely delicious! I had a day of disappointing businesses and mediocre restaurants and then I came across this simple lovely Sushi shop, late on a Sunday evening. I got all this deliciousness for $20 plus tip. Fair prices, freshly made by a family business. Perfect!

I definitely recommend this sushi place. The service was amazing and they were very nice. Got the island roll and best one I've had. Highly recommend this place.

Solid, reasonably priced sushi with a large (if hard to find online) menu. Stars allocated taking into consideration the location/alternatives. Not accounting for Chicago, LA, NY, or SF sushi experiences - take a breath, enjoy the island air and the chill vibe, and scale expectations accordingly. We don't have traffic or blaring sirens or Michelin stars - look for solid options with friendly service. Anticipate a bit of a wait - it's a small spot and sushi is not fast. Chillax - it's Hawaii ;) Had spicy scallop & avocado futomaki and a sunshine roll - rice was not gummy or overly sweet (two personal peeves), but be warned there is quite a bit of it. If you are looking for sleek, Manhattan basement style rolls - these are not they. These rolls are filling, feature very fresh fish, and are made for the middle segment, spice wise. If you want truly spicy fish, you'll have to ask for it. Or slather wasabi on it. Ate with a group in which everyone was happy. I overheard that the Miso is bomb. Definitely will be trying more now that I have more menu saved. Attaching a bunch of pics in attempt to capture it.

Spicy tuna bowl with tempura on top and a island roll

Wow!! This place keeps getting better and better. I can confidently say that this is the best sushi restaurant on the Bigisland. I've been coming here for years and it's so nice to eat at a place where the food is consistent in regard to taste. Today I ordered the spicy tuna bowl and added tempura on top. Bruhhhhhh. Was soooo ono! Not only was it the best sushi bowl that I've ever had but for 11.99$ you can't beat that price. The amount you get for that price was a great deal.

Gave me severe food poisoning and the sushi itself wasn't even good. Too much rice and fell apart easily.

While they appear to be a casual, local, hippy establishment (and they are). The food and wait is worth every penny, (and pennies are more valuable now). You will hear live music when you approach building. It's bright and colorful, open air and you can feel your inner artist being inspired. The place is packed but you find a seat and listen to the laughter, singing, and sizzles from the kitchen. It's small and bundles of fruit seam to just be around everywhere. Your server gives you a menu and you think. "Oh wow! That's a bit pricy." But you're all in. Considering this place is proud of its farm to table reputation. Yes, nothing goes to waist here and it as fresh as you can possibly get. So you order and wait. And you wait, and you wait. Finally the plate arrives and it's beautiful. A paradise of fruit, veggie filled omelet and some things you're not sure if you can eat them or if it's just decoration. (You can eat them) Have you ever heard of a cranberry hibiscus? I'm not a fan of salsa with my eggs but they make their own from scratch and they also sell it. So I have to at least try it. "What is in this! Magic?" Before you know it a whole days life experience has just happened. There were ups, there were downs, and surprises. Not just from the food but the whole surroundings. Let's just say nothing was left on the plate and I have stories to tell. Our server was the sweetest older lady who you can tell just loved her job and people. In fact all the workers were just rays of sunshine and smiles. Did I just have breakfast or walk into a magical world where time stood still and surrounded me in song and colors. I swear I don't do substances, it's just that good.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The ambiance and experience are something to feel in person and watching the dishes being prepared with such precision was fascinating. The worker was nice about it, but because they don't have a website, how were we supposed to know? We also usually try to make reservations ahead of time, but because there was no website, we figure it's a first come, first serve kind of spot. That's our bad for making that assumption, but now that I'm reading other Yelp reviews, this seems to be a years-old customer service issue. But it makes sense, since exclusivity seems to be part of the business plan (i.e. small/limited seating, reservations only). Must be working for them. Didn't work out for us though, at least in the moment. So even though we didn't try the food (I'm sure it's likely amazing), it sucked to make the drive out here. Pro tip: call first --months ahead before you plan to go here and make a reservation! After just reading some of the reviews, I learned you can do take out but must order ahead of time. Not sure how much more ahead of time. So calling would also be a good idea here. Honestly, the amount of work to just get info, a reservation, and ultimately a meal here is starting to feel cumbersome. I'm not sure I'd want to try making the effort again. We did turn a lemon situation into lemonade and instead had dinner at Ken's House of Pancakes, and they never disappoint! Had we eaten at Takenoko, we would've missed out on Ken's oxtail stew, which was listed as part of the day's special menu items, and it was one of the best meals we've had in Hilo. So, it all worked out.

Despite the parking lot being quite full, there was still plenty of parking available, and we were seated right away. The menu had lots of options, which made it hard to decide what to order. I went with the Okinawa roll (shrimp tempura and spicy crabmeat inside, deep fried with eel sauce and mayo). My coworkers ordered the Big Island roll and the chirashi don, and they both loved their meals. My Okinawa roll tasted delicious, but it was a little too oily for me - probably wouldn't order it again. The tea I ordered also tasted very watered down, which was disappointing. Service was quick to take our orders, but my food came out way after my coworkers' dishes. Understandable since mine had to be fried, but I ended up awkwardly watching them eat while I waited for my meal to arrive. Overall, a decent sushi spot with good options - just be mindful of what you order and expect some timing issues if you're ordering different types of dishes.
