Marcy's is a Mini-Filipino store off the highway. You would never know from the outside looking in…read morebut they have a variety of great hard to find filipino products that may not be found at the bigger markets. I came in looking for specific pancit noodles and they had it! They also have an awesome selection of frozen goods like squid, prawns, and fish, that I was surprised to see in the back of the store at the frozen aisle. Everything in it was amazing and awesome! Even the variety of produce like long beans, fern, and green leafy types were surprising! Staff is friendly and prices are a bit cheaper on some products compared to the bigger stores! Cant wait to re-shop when we're back on this side of the island!

Unfortunately for us, on our last day in Hilo when we went to try it Wilson's was inexplicably closed....whhhaaattt????!!!! With my sweet tooth still craving something tasty and my bf needing to mend his shocked heart over Wilson's, I suggested we get some Halo Halo. Instantly his eyes brightened and we jumped in the car to head to Marcy's Variety Store. Off of Makaala Street in an inconspicuous block, we pulled up to Marcy's Variety Store. Note to the wise, it's next door to a small Filipino bakery that also serves Halo Halo but they can't beat Marcy's. We ordered two, and the gal handed us over two gi-normous cups of Halo Halo. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ojNY69j2gfwMI0er0YHpdA?select=bNnQqEpE-Y8WtQ6iTjWUMQ All kinds of tropical fruits and jellies dancing around the cup swirled with evaporated milk---all of this goodness is topped off with crushed ice and a heaping scoop of ube/vanilla ice cream. YUM!!!!!!!! And although my poor honey didn't get his Wilson's, he looked pretty happy enjoying his Halo Halo. (And my sweet tooth thanked me for it too!)

Before our wedding, Mark and his wife took an opportunity to make it a point to get to know us. In that meeting we learned not only about the experience and skills they possessed, but the authenticity of their hearts to truly serve us. On the day of, they were warriors championing through the Hilo rain (surprise, surprise it rained in a hilo wedding), cooking, moving things around, and presenting everything to perfection. Before we could even thank them for their service, they had already left, ensuring the attention stayed on us on our wedding day. I would recommend their catering service to anyone and just incase you were wondering, yes their food was KILLAHZ.

I had been planning this destination wedding from California and it was not easy choosing vendors blindly without ever trying the food! But the food looked great on their IG page and after communicating with Mark, he definitely knew what he was doing. He gave me some recommendations since I wanted a Hawaiian-Filipino theme. The bbq skewers, bistek, pancit, macaroni salad + poke station and more was all soooo good. They were still good the next day after being slightly hungover. Mahalo to Mark and his team! I recommend their catering to anyone.

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite!

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.
