Just down the road a bit is this market, the even has a bar with Togo howlers, they call them growler but that is 64 oz vs. 32 for the howler. The beer menu changes so this time no stout beers, the darkest was modelo negro, several local breweries. And one sour. But you can take draft beer home. Poke selection is nice at the deli section, the hot foods and sushi is very tasty. The baked good are definitely worth it. Ube cake!!! The salt and vinegar chicharon for $10 is amazing. Store is clean and cashiers and other personal always friendly and willing to help. Poke is ono. However prices are higher than most other food stores. I don't shop here normally but usually stop in once a week as I am drive that that way and will pick up a needed item and poke on the way home. Usually I'm lucky as what I need is on sale. read more

The old Malama Market location had a lot of issues because the building's owner wouldn't do the most basic maintenance, (its still un-rented, leaking, and trash basically). Malama moved/bought a new building a few years ago and they made it a 10/10 whole food like experience. I shop here every day and it's the better part of my day. Price gouging the locals. Not pono. You either have to have food stamps or be rich to shop here. Veggies often expire very quick on top of it. Store is beautiful and employees are great but the prices are very depressing. They pay rent on another building in town just to keep any other grocery stores from moving in. Very very greedy owners. I wish a boycott would happen or another store could move into town. I'd rather drive to Hilo than support these greedy people. read more

Just went today! I had delicious local tap beer watched the Packers game picked up some fresh made vegetables and sun noodles on the hot bar. Everything was absolutely delicious. Ok, so start with the poke... so ono. It is a clean, well organized, high end space. Yes, a bit pricey - but they do have a lot of difficult to find items. Prepared foods, alcohol selection, boutique-type cheeses and breads...it's a great place and I have always had wonderful service there. Clean and spacious with aisle after aisle of everything a grocery store should have plus fresh bakery, prepared food, deli and poke sections (featuring 40 varieties!), even their "Anytime Bar" featuring juice, coffee and espresso, plus beer and wine on tap, served by the glass or growler. Beer, wine and hard alcohol section features a nice selection of everything, including a refrigerated section. Aisles are spacious and plentiful, store is clean, bright and inviting, and staff is friendly and always nearby. Malama Market became our go-to store for everything, especially their awesome poke selection. Be sure to try the spicy tuna, volcano and oyster varieties. This seems to be a market for the locals. Typical grocery (for Hawaii). We looked around a bit, but they didn't really have anything we needed. Plus the prices seemed pretty steep. Then we went to the deli counter. Poke!! We ended up buying a few varieties of poke. And they were all really good. I suppose that really is what I'm rating here: the poke. Apparently others agree, because that's what most people were wanting. I think we got some of the last of one variety, as the next customer after us bought what was left (I forget which variety that was...maybe the "California roll poke"?). If you're in the area, stop by the deli and get the poke. You won't be sorry. read more

Be wary of meat department. Meat department has on MULTIPLE times sold out of date meats. When brought to the attention of department management they rolled their eyes, saying "we'll try better" and walking away. They just got off strike. The atmosphere is usually very welcoming here and the workers are friendly. I've never experienced any problems until finding a hair and a cockroach leg in my food today. It was very shocking and disturbing because I already had a few bites to eat. I called the store to report it to a manager; who was pleasant and willing to refund me. I would suggest that workers wash their hands, utensils, pots and pans prior to food preparation; wear gloves, a hair net and also a beard net (if applicable). I don't think I'll buy any prepared food for a while. Hopefully better sanitation standards will be implemented. read more

It is bright, clean, and organized inside. Aisles are spacious. All staff encountered have been friendly and helpful. From a mainland visitor's perspective this is the best supermarket on Hawai'i. Far better than any KTA or Foodland. No worse selection on produce and staples compared with anywhere else. Far better poke deli and premade musubis and baked goods compared with KTAs and Foodlands. The prices on non-staple packaged foods seem higher than other supermarkets. read more
