We make it a mission to stop into local grocery stores when we travel and we were really impressed with this one. We were very impressed with the Poke and hot food offerings, all of it looked so good but my wife settled on the fish bento box. She said it was the best fish she's had in our entire trip and her only regret was she didn't get two! I was a fan of the cool wall mural as well, 10/10 would recommend. read more

Consistency is definitely lacking at this location. I got a nice portion poke bowl the last time. This time they skimped me on the poke. So ridiculous. Get it together Malama. read more

Just down the road a bit is this market, the even has a bar with Togo howlers, they call them growler but that is 64 oz vs. 32 for the howler. The beer menu changes so this time no stout beers, the darkest was modelo negro, several local breweries. And one sour. But you can take draft beer home. Poke selection is nice at the deli section, the hot foods and sushi is very tasty. The baked good are definitely worth it. Ube cake!!! The salt and vinegar chicharon for $10 is amazing. Fried chicken skins seems to still have feathers attached. Great customer service. read more

Store is clean and cashiers and other personal always friendly and willing to help. Poke is ono. However prices are higher than most other food stores. I don't shop here normally but usually stop in once a week as I am drive that that way and will pick up a needed item and poke on the way home. Usually I'm lucky as what I need is on sale. read more

Always a pleasant experience shopping here. A bit on the pricey side, but groceries all over are overpriced these days. Staff are both friendly and helpful here. There is a pleasant cafe/dining area with beers on tap or espresso drinks. They have everything but the ocean view read more

A little out of the way for some. This place offers a variety of things. Very clean store. Many options for hot food, poke' counter, make a sandwich, dessert, bakery and like everywhere spam musubi. Lots of choices. Always friendly staff. read more

The old Malama Market location had a lot of issues because the building's owner wouldn't do the most basic maintenance, (its still un-rented, leaking, and trash basically). Malama moved/bought a new building a few years ago and they made it a 10/10 whole food like experience. I shop here every day and it's the better part of my day. All staff is friendly, great food options, and the town is better with this. read more

Beautiful store. It's a sister store of Foodland. Got fresh pork chops that had a bad chop under the 4 on top. Not buying fresh meat from Foodland again, has happened before. Only KTA 1916 brand. read more

New, clean with just about everything you could look for in a supermarket. As I was locating it with Google Maps I couldn't find it because the location shows the property before the market and the other businesses in the area was built. read more

Price gouging the locals. Not pono. You either have to have food stamps or be rich to shop here. Veggies often expire very quick on top of it. Store is beautiful and employees are great but the prices are very depressing. They pay rent on another building in town just to keep any other grocery stores from moving in. Very very greedy owners. I wish a boycott would happen or another store could move into town. I'd rather drive to Hilo than support these greedy people. read more

Some of the best quick food in town. Breakfast buffet is a bit expensive (priced by weight) however the food is always fresh and good for breakfast and lunch. This goes for poke, chicken and other hot food read more

Just went today! I had delicious local tap beer watched the Packers game picked up some fresh made vegetables and sun noodles on the hot bar. Everything was absolutely delicious. The New Malama Market is Beautiful! This is a High End Supermarket!! Visitors Love This Place.

The local fancy grocery store chain, with tasty, fresh, and affordable poke bowls, baked goods, and prepared foods. The poke bowls are $10.99 for two types of poke and generous scoops of rice. Cute hangout for locals. They even have a small bar, with about 6 beers on tap. We must have visited every day during our stay in Pahoa. read more

Malama "Mamma~Mia" Market!!! As an Epicurious foodie, I felt my tastebuds come alive with savory delight as soon as I walked in. From the coffee bar to the beer bar and from the sushi bar to the deli bar my eyes had already ordered way too much for my tummy. That's why I keep coming back. Prices are fair and the quality of products is superb. The Malama Market family is fun to chat with and will tempt you to explore their variety of flavors, cuisines, and unique culinary temptations. Malama Market - a tote bag for sale - Grocery Near Me - Pahoa, Hawaii

Ok, so start with the poke... so ono. It is a clean, well organized, high end space. Yes, a bit pricey - but they do have a lot of difficult to find items. Prepared foods, alcohol selection, boutique-type cheeses and breads...it's a great place and I have always had wonderful service there. A point off for cost, but worth it for service and selection. read more

New market located in the also new Puna Kai shopping plaza, recently moved from another local strip mall location. Clean and spacious with aisle after aisle of everything a grocery store should have plus fresh bakery, prepared food, deli and poke sections (featuring 40 varieties!), even their "Anytime Bar" featuring juice, coffee and espresso, plus beer and wine on tap, served by the glass or growler. Beer, wine and hard alcohol section features a nice selection of everything, including a refrigerated section. Aisles are spacious and plentiful, store is clean, bright and inviting, and staff is friendly and always nearby. Malama Market became our go-to store for everything, especially their awesome poke selection. Be sure to try the spicy tuna, volcano and oyster varieties. Plenty of parking available in the common lots shared by all the Puna Kai stores. Hours are 6am - 9pm daily. read more

This seems to be a market for the locals. Typical grocery (for Hawaii). We looked around a bit, but they didn't really have anything we needed. Plus the prices seemed pretty steep. Then we went to the deli counter. Poke!! We ended up buying a few varieties of poke. And they were all really good. I suppose that really is what I'm rating here: the poke. Apparently others agree, because that's what most people were wanting. I think we got some of the last of one variety, as the next customer after us bought what was left (I forget which variety that was...maybe the "California roll poke"?). If you're in the area, stop by the deli and get the poke. You won't be sorry. read more

This Malama Mkt. is the absolute best supermarket on the big island. Really think I've been to them all. Reasons for "best"? #1 The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, as well as helpful. #2 Their selection is amazing. Their shelves are always well stocked and fronted...nice! Food is always very fresh. I could go on but you get the picture. read more

Fancy grocery store. Think Whole Foods meets Trader Joe's. They have a bar here too with beers and tap. Deli where the poke is seems more fresh and a teeny bit different selection than your usual Foodland or KTA markets. read more

Be wary of meat department. Meat department has on MULTIPLE times sold out of date meats. When brought to the attention of department management they rolled their eyes, saying "we'll try better" and walking away. They just got off strike. The atmosphere is usually very welcoming here and the workers are friendly. I've never experienced any problems until finding a hair and a cockroach leg in my food today. It was very shocking and disturbing because I already had a few bites to eat. I called the store to report it to a manager; who was pleasant and willing to refund me. I would suggest that workers wash their hands, utensils, pots and pans prior to food preparation; wear gloves, a hair net and also a beard net (if applicable). I don't think I'll buy any prepared food for a while. Hopefully better sanitation standards will be implemented. read more

Malama Market is the place to get all your essentials when in the Pahoa area. I prefer Malama to Walmart Superstore, Foodland, and KTA grocery. Malama Market has plenty of parking available. It is bright, clean, and organized inside. Aisles are spacious. All staff encountered have been friendly and helpful. Fresh fruit, Juice bar, Fresh bakery, hot prepared food, beer, wine, spirits, poke, Hawaiian candies, and travel toiletries can all be purchased here. A market worth checking out. From a mainland visitor's perspective this is the best supermarket on Hawai'i. Far better than any KTA or Foodland. No worse selection on produce and staples compared with anywhere else. Far better poke deli and premade musubis and baked goods compared with KTAs and Foodlands. The prices on non-staple packaged foods seem higher than other supermarkets. read more
