Tin Shack is the most laid-back, authentic retro-beach-chill-organic vibe kinda place that I've been to in a long time. This isn't a fast-serve pre-made insta-starbucky place. It's a take your time, talk a bit to your cashier, sit down and chill out while you wait for however long it takes to cook your food kinda place. And holy moley is it worth the wait!!!! I had one of the most flavorful chai lattes - ever. You know the ones that *almost* burn your throat strong? Yeah, that kind - awesome! Hubby had one of the best cups of coffee that he's had on the island, and the kiddo downed a cold brew that was incredible! We attacked a walnut cinnamon roll, warm and drizzled with additional icing... didn't last long. (It's already half-devoured in the pic). We also got a slice of quiche "to go" but I'm eyeing it as I write this so it's not long for this world. The breakfast bagel was DELICIOUS! A beautiful, small crafted everything bagel with perfectly cooked bacon and just the right amount of crunch and chewy to make me happy! Kiddo had the same, it but on purple potato sourdough and it was bomb! The vibe is so laid back... old surf boards lined up across the rafters, cute tables and a long bench along one wall, an old hutch with various knickknacks for sale, a rack of super cute resale clothing, shelves of mismatched mugs on the wall, outdoor seating where you can listen to the rain as it pitter-patters on the actual tin roof, an auntie and her guitar in the corner, locals gathering for breakfast alongside tourists gearing up for a day at the NP... just such a perfect little slice of Hawaii in Pahoa town. Such a great hidden gem on a side street outside of Pahoa. We dropped in for a late brunch and greatly enjoyed it. The pumpkin chocolate walnut scone was perfectly cooked. Slightly crispy on the edges while being soft and moist on the inside with melty chocolate chunks. If there was more left, I would have bought the rest! I also had an Acai bowl with homemade granola and fruit. It too was excellent and I highly recommend it. The seating was open air and our food was ready quickly. I am from Oahu but if you are in Pahoa, this place is worth the search. It's a little off the beaten path but you'll be glad you made the effort. The ambience is kind a surf hippie retro. I love all the vintage long boards and short boards in the rafters. They have some merch for sale and cool Artwork on the walls. I also noticed some speakers so I'm assuming they occasionally have live music. Of course what stands out is there food. They have freshly baked items and everything looks delicious. I had an amazing Turkey bacon club on a fresh purple sourdough bread that is their house bread! I'm not exaggerating when I say it was delicious, the bacon was so flavorful! I have a friend who took me there each there all the time and said that they have a great breakfast menu. Their staff, super friendly! Looks like they also have Wi-Fi too. If I lived in Pahoa or any where near there I would be hanging out at this place for sure! Check back order some delicious food check your emails and meet some cool people. read more

This is the second time that I visit this small bakery/ breakfast place. The road to the location is tough- with many water puddle and holes. Be careful if you have a low clearance car. The inside feels quite hipster that if you order coffee you will get different mugs each time. This time when I got there, they sold out their cinnamon bun, which is probably one of my favorite pastry there. Instead I got the knotted rolls with sugar and cinnamon. They drizzled sugar frosting on top and absolutely amazing. I ordered the breakfast beagle and add extra vegetables. It's totally worth the extra money since their vegetable is quite refreshing. My husband ordered their breakfast platter, and I appreciate that they gives you tomato and cucumber on the side. We got there at the right time and the line wasn't too long, only 2-3 groups ahead of us. When we were leaving around 11am, the line was crazy. Some local told us that sometimes the wait can be up to 2 hours. Have to say that they do have quite a tight sitting situation, every single table is grabbed right after the food is finished. Definitely not a place where you can sit and do work, or read your book. I highly recommend you give a try to this place if you are around Hilo or pahoa. just different vibe and some good food! read more

Service is really hit or miss. Sometimes expect to wait an hour for your meal. Today, they totally missed me and I had to remind them, I was waiting for my meal for over 45mins. Eggs Benedict is over priced and half the time the egg yolk is cooked hard because they poach them the night before. The "salad" it comes with is just garnish. I asked for the eggs to be redone, the employee said ok, but a minute later exclaimed he was trying to be nice but instead tossed me the exact same dish he just took, out of spite since he saw me starting to write this review. I was going to wait until the end of my meal to finalize it because steps were being taken to rectify the problems at hand. After staying for an hour or so doing work we decided to also try the açaí bowl which continued to not disappoint. Wi-Fi's not the best for work, but atmosphere is immaculate! There's indoor and outdoor seating (though the side of the building is open), a little thrifting corner with clothes and other goodies to take a look at, and indoor restroom. Outside, you can sit on the hill right above the parking lot or swing on the swing set down below. The friends that introduced me to this cool joint had breakfast sandwiches, with bagel dogs for the road. They swear these are the best breakwhiches (is that a thing?) in the area. Every last thing on the salad was slamming good. Greens fresh and abundant. Pickled slaw delicious and the cashew cheese was flavorful. Balsamic flavor-perfect and not too thick (a pet peeve.) I broke up with coffee or would have had one. They smelled delicious. My Macha was good (not sweet, yay) but the almond milk a bit thick for my taste (just me.) If you want an overpriced small portion of breakfast and bad coffee this is the place. Poached eggs that are not runny like they are everywhere else. When ordering a frappe, nobody tells you that they ran out of ingredients to make it. Ordered a latte instead, probably the worst coffee on the island. Also, we placed an order of two pancakes but only received one. When confronting the waitress about it she said that we could order either a stack or one. However, we were not given this option and were charged 8$ for one pancake. The menu clearly says that 2 pancakes are supposedly given. The hollandaise sauce was delish. I had been wanting to go here for Eggs Benedict ever since we moved back to the Puna area last year. It had been about 4 years since I was last here. This is a very laid back Puna style coffee/bakery with a cool vibe and mostly relocated residents of the area, visitors and locals. It was nice that the place hasn't changed in 4 years and there are good Covid safety protocols in place. The staff and service is friendly and the food is good, but not exceptional. Prices are a bit more than a local diner, a few blocks down the street, where they also serve Eggs Benedict. They make their own bakery items here. I did enjoy my Eggs Benedict, but the English muffin, was more chewy in consistency. My partner got the Lox & Bagel and could barely cut the Bagel. He did not like that at all. We also got a Turkey Club to go. We were not asked if we wanted Sauerkraut added to the sandwich and it was an additional charge of over $2.00 and I am not a fan of Sauerkraut. Did not appreciate that. I asked for a tomato slice to be added to my Eggs Benedict, but it came on the side and I was charged for that as well as extra Hollandaise sauce, which was fine, but not mentioned at time of ordering. We also got a large slice of Carrot Cake to go, which I had to ask for upon leaving, as they had forgotten. I'm glad we went back, I got my Eggs Benedict. I don't think we'll be back though, my partner was not impressed. The Turkey Club Sandwich was soggy, by the time we ate it at home. The bread used was sliced so thin. The Carrot Cake, now that was exceptional! We both enjoyed that. That would be a reason to go back to takeout a slice or two of their carrot cake. WOW--the best place on the Big Island!! We have been trying local spots for breakfast all over, and there are a lot of nice places, but this one takes the cake! The atmosphere is sweet and friendly (there's live ukulele & singing!), the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! We ordered the Turkey & bacon club, which was SO fresh and delicious, the everything bagel with cream cheese (also fresh and delicious), an iced chai (this is for people who like real chai--it's very spicy!), and a cup of the house-roast drip coffee with ice. WOW, the coffee was amazing, and this is coming from someone who doesn't like coffee!! It was light, full tasting, not burnt or bitter. We didn't even need sugar! We went and bought a whole bag of the beans to take home. We also went back after that to get two more sandwiches for later. And we came back the next morning for even more!!
