Second visit in as many weeks and like before, it didn't disappoint. I ordered the NY sirloin med-rare and it was done almost spot on. 90% of the steak was med-rare but the rest was med-well. Just as in my previous visit, the steak was very good. read more

This isn't your hipster, new age, upscale restaurant. No it's better. It's your classic, local, down to earth Diner and bar. This establishment works hard, with only a few people serving and waiting and cooking. And they are on top of your dining needs. Truly old school, using carbon paper, a retro cash register and the only thing that's connected to the internet is the credit card reader. Prices are reasonable and food is excellent. They have all the classic diner food and Hawaiian favorites that are prepared well and good portions. They also have a connected bar if you're looking to catch the game and have a drink. All food is available there as well. The main dining area has booths and tables. Making it a good location for large groups or private dining. Atmosphere is casual and not too loud. Even when busy. And they do get busy. My husband and I went on a Thursday around 11am and we were seated right away. But a large group and some others came in just as we finished. So plan well and enjoy. read more

The food is adequate, tasty. But they use a lot of pre-processed ingredients and salt. So people on special dietary needs would have a problem. Service is a big issue. Depends on the waitress you get. There is one waitress who targets elderly customers, couples, singles, vets and purposely makes them wait. If she's on duty, and takes a dislike to you, she will refuse you service, or tell the other waitresses to delay your order. The atmosphere is below average. Poor maintenance is obvious. Many booths have torn seats and have been taped off to prevent snags. There's no WiFi so phone service is sketchy. Access to internet non existent. The outer edges and upper corners are dusty, full of cob webs. Access to bathrooms are limited. Shared with the launderette down the hall in back of the restaurant. So you often have to wait until free. read more

Wonderful! We will be returning soon! Awesome location in Pahoa downtown. We had steak and it was cooked to perfection. Thank you.

We really enjoy eating here. The food and service is great plus the prices are very reasonable especially for Hawaii!

Are breakfast there, normal price, food wasn't big amount, tasted okay. Nothing special.

Excellent kalua pork and cabbage, the Loco is also very tasty. There's a full bar and the service is fast and friendly.

My husband said his grilled cheese and fries were good. The prime rib special was disgusting I ate the sides, which they charged $6 for each. Ridiculous. Save your money. read more

Good food. Affordable prices. The wait isn't too long and great customer service . Good atmosphere

The food is decent. It's usually pretty empty, so it's not noisy. The service is good.

We went there twice bc it was recommended by our Airbnb host and it was cheap, fast, friendly, and really tasty. We stopped here for breakfast and both times we had a great experience and loved our server. Definitely a locals spot and I bet they get busy but both times we sat down right away. Service is quick and friendly and food comes out fast. 5 out of 5 for sure read more

Nothing to write home about as far as food and interior go. Restaurant is like an old diner type and connected to a bar. The best part of tonight was friendly staff with fast service, but food was no good and a waste of $30 for 2 meals. Seemed like frozen chicken cutlet and fries, the gravy was probably the only thing homemade. read more

ordered a cheeseburger. The meat was terrible. Would not break down in your mouth. Just wadded it up like cardboard. The owner was there. He was very rude. I thought he would like to know. I usually go for their shakes and this is the first time I tried the food. also the restaurant which kind of smelly. I will not go back. read more

I dont drink so just went there for a late dinner with my wife while visiting but that food honestly made me wish I was drinking because that's the only way to stomach it. The waitress was very nice so no complaints about the staff but for 30+ dollars definitely should've got some food at the 711 across the street instead read more

I like this place. It's not the fanciest food but it's pretty good especially being down here in Pahoa. Nice people. Great service . Good prices read more

Real locals vibes. Still warm greeting's and quick service. Food tased great. Some of the best onion rings anywhere. Real thick but cooked perfectly! Nice and crispy without being burnt. Cheese burger and Ruben both good too. Good value. read more

A Hidden Gem! Not to miss! "Lunner" ( BTW. lunch/Dinner), Ordered their "Special Original Teriyaki Beef Philly Cheese Steak Sub..." It was Fantastic! Substituted their top of the line "Onion Rings!" instead of the usual offerings...Great Choice! Additionally, the Chicken Teriyaki "Hawaiian-Asian" Style combo plate, very good. Large portions, good mac salad, 2 scoops rice. Great Service! Vintage setting where "Da Locals" eat! Bar seating available serving generous drinks and is available for Cafe dining. Got to go there! read more

I read. A few bad reviews and decided to check this place out myself. The atmosphere was really great, it seemed very family oriented. It could use a modern touch though. I ate the Eggs Benedict w/hash brown. It was really good but a tad on the salty side, I think it was my choice in the ham. I would recommend it. read more

Great breakfast spot. Affordable and great service. Great spot to stop by before exploring puna

The waitress was super pleasant to talk to, as she was from my home state of AZ originally. The AC was cold which was awesome, and the chocolate pie wasn't bad at all. We only stopped in for the pie so I can't give much of a review beyond that except that the wife said the bathroom was very clean. We sat on the restaurant side instead of the bar area, and it was quiet and clean overall. Not too loud or anything like that. Just a nice place to step in out of the sun for a minute. The next time we swing through we will have a full meal here to see how it measures up. read more

We got seated and served immediately, waitress gave wonderful suggestions when we were ordering. Drinks were very tasty. The food arrived warm and tasted delicious. My husband was pleased with his seafood platter and I had the Hawaiian stroganoff. If we visited the big island again would definitely come back and we recommend for others visiting. It is a friendly diner, staff is great and welcoming. We have visited a few places and so far this is our favorite. Very large plates for the prices. Mahalo. read more

The tour book I bought (and read for your information) stated that the Black Rock Cafe serves "embarrassingly cheap beer." Well, it was inexpensive, but neither the server or yours truly was remotely embarrassed! My hot veggie sub was ono (that's a word the people around here use to describe something that exceeds expectations). Patty enjoyed her fish and chips. The macaroni salad was made in the style of Hawaii....marvelous! Fries were above average (B). read more

4 of us had a great meal here. Very good food, very friendly and prompt service. Casual comfortable atmosphere. I highly recommend this place. I have only one minor criticism that won't affect 99% of patrons. I hesitate to put it here but elsewhere on the internet they list accessible restrooms. And as a person in a wheelchair I can verify that it's largely true. The doorway is of ample width and the room is large enough. The only issue was the lack of a grab bar at the side of the toilet. Other than that I commend Black Rock for making their business accessible. read more

Wouldn't recommend. Place smells. Natts bug's flying in your face. Customer service is really rude when over the phone..

Stopped in on a whim as I was looking for a place to watch the game. I checked the bar it was pretty busy but there was one open seat. No one else was eating just drinking I guess I now now why. I wanted to make taking up a stool worth it so I ordered ribs. They only had sauce on a portion. Just so so the veggies were kinda inedible. The bar staff changed during my visit and when I got my check I was charged for a glass of wine I didn't have but not charged for my dessert. I would not rush back read more

It was not a good experience. The ambiance wasn't clean. A large cockroach crawled up on my sister n laws should just after we placed our order. We couldn't leave quick enough. I don't venture I'll ever go back. Didn't even wait for our food. If there's a large cockroach running around, it's likely the kitchen isn't clean either. read more

We were visiting a beach nearby and met a local surfer. We mentioned to him that we were going to grab some lunch and he suggested we stop at Black Rock Cafe. We love to get recommendations from locals when we're on vacation so we didn't even bother looking at reviews. Without hesitation we hopped in the car and made our way to Black Rock Cafe. The cafe is basically a diner in a small strip mall. There are booths and tables to sit at. The menu has something that just about anyone can enjoy. The dishes are huge and very reasonably priced. Service was fast and friendly. Everything me and my family ordered was delicious. We were so full from our late lunch we didn't even bother getting dinner that night. If you're in the area don't pass up this little gem. read more

I would suggest to stay away from the bar area. I was told I was 86d for no reason. The bartenders,(except Danielle) are very rude and mean and like to gang up on customers, along with the bar "regulars"and are extremely unprofessional. They don't take their jobs seriously, they just talk alot of trash and are more concerned about creating drama than the job at hand and are very rude to paying customers. Their food is substandard. The burgers are decent. read more

Walked in on 1/9/2025 and was promptly seated. The waitress came a few minutes later and took our order. After she left my sister in law pointed at my wife with a horrifying look. I looked at my wife and she had a large cockroach crawling on her shoulder. We got up and ran out of this restaurant as if it was on fire. Think about this for a moment, if there are cockroaches crawling on diners, just think about the infestation going on in the kitchen. Tourist beware, there are much better places to eat than this bug infested diner. read more
